Like how men love watching lesbian porn or women doing any sexual in general because it turns them on, only now it's the other way around. If this is a good example for the female gaze it just seems like it is equally as sexual just with men or something. I feel like male gaze ruined that phrase for me unfortunately. I think one of the things that make this show so brilliant and a real masterpiece is that is shot and written through the female gaze. The raw and unfiltered beauty and romance in the script, cinematography and acting is so palpable and warm that the show makes u feel homesick once u finish it, because these characters and their story seem so real that you can picture them going on even after you’re done watching.
And the details of the casting and representation just makes it even more important and monumental for film, society and young people.
These two geniuses - and the cast - deserve the world for gifting and sharing with us such a beautiful creation.

I appreciate it so much when shows or movies show LGBT relationship not as some weird hypersexual yaoi thing where their only storyline is that they're gay and the consequences of that. And everyday it's getting harder to find that. Almost every 'gay representation' these days is just lame as fuck! Cause how often can you listen to the same story over and over again? I don't really know. Like I've watched shameless about half a year ago for the first time and the kind of representation surprised me, I literally forgot that gay couples could be represented like Ian and Mickey, two very complex characters who struggle with their own shit that doesn't always (rarely even) have to do with the fact that they're gay. And that's just beautiful.
Hands down, young royals is the first show produced in the last about 5 years (that I watched) that had a gay couple in it and didnt just make them gay. They had actual storylines and layers to them. And the fact that they were in a gay relationship wasn't the focus of the seties. And that makes the show so beautiful. It literally became one of my favourite shows.

@@personunknown7129 I was a little bit sceptical when hearing this show about queer men was directed and written by women but they did an amazing job. I think my scepticism comes from hanging out in fandom spaces where some women are really gross about their mlm ships and I didn't reflect over how uncomfortable they made me until after I realized I was transmasc and that mlm stories mean something more to me and that some of the people I encountered as a teenager really were indeed fetishising queer men even though they claimed they didn't. In hindsight the most obvious sign that they were fetisizers should've been that they shipped the actors, and I don't mean just a little bit, I mean grown women theorising about their relationship and obsessively looking for signs.

@@muldersimp2052 exactly! There are way too many fetishists out there, and way too many of them are in charge. In my opinion the whole 'representation matters' thing kind of fired backwards. Cause imo it's even worse to have gay characters and make them by far the worst written characters. They are only there to be 'cute' and have sex. I'm a lesbian and it took me so long to get that homosexual relationship can be as normal and complex as a straight ones, cause I literally never had any representation in the town where I'm from, only social media and TV. And in social media and TV like 95% of gay couples are either there because people are fetishists OR people are scared to not be 'woke'

I felt right away there were women involved in the creation of this series. Sensibility, kindness, empathy, tenderness are things often left out, while in this production they are the strong suit. Every character has a soft side and they show it, nothing feels hyper sexualized but just natural and sweet. I mean they were able to create intimacy even in a frame with two pair of SHOES weaving together!!

What I love is how it still shows the underlying issues of homophobia, yet it is not forced or the main issue. It goes hand on hand with the protagonist's royalty.

the energy and literacy in this video absolutely solidified everything i’d felt about Young Royals when i first watched it. it was like these women took the words right out of my head. they are so intelligent in the way they discuss the show and representation, really refreshing to see. absolutely incredible how two individuals this talented managed to come together and create one of the most politically aware and well-written shows on netflix currently.

"When you do stories about the working class or the lower class it's very obvious. Then, you talk a lot about class, journalists ask you those questions and those issues are debated. But when you do stories about the upper class, the class issue isn't brought up in the conversation surrounding the piece. [And when] you said that we're examining the honour culture of the upper class [...] that penny fell [and I realized] there are certain terms that you never use in relation to class."
"Representation isn’t about pressing things into places where they don’t exist”
"It's not always easy because in film and TV you look for the things you're familiar with. It's a vicious circle when you don't see people like you portrayed because you think that you don't have a chance and don't apply for things. More effort is required [to have a diverse cast] but it's 100% worth it."
"Malte is the opposite of August as a person [...] but he gave it something different and it became [...] better or stronger because he's got that fragility too, that softness. Juxtaposing that and [August's] hardness, it became more powerful"
"You might think that you want attention when what you might need is acknowledgment"
"I think our appeal is wide because we trust our audience. Sometimes, when you make a youth series, you tend to over-explain everything or [you think] that you have to show what's right and wrong, or good and bad. But in _Young Royals_ I still think there are some moral dilemmas that people will have different opinions about. And when you trust a young audience [like that] I think that allows older people to connect with it."
So... how wise are these two ladies, exactly? Because I'm blown away. These are only my favourite quotes but the whole conversation was a delight.
Bravo! Both to them and Netflix, for creating a surprisingly nuanced, realistic, and raw piece surrounding a decidedly fictional plot. I'm already eagerly awaiting season two's confirmation and release.

being an elder in the LGBTQ+ community, one of my main points I have been attempting to get across for years is "one's sexuality is a part of them, but does not define them"
This show does this in spades....for the first time on screen, we have a LGBTQ+ theme, although important to the story, isn't the main story....the main story is they are portrayed as 'regular' members of a society.......a part of society.
As things in this world evolve, so does the story of the LGBTQ+ community....so to date, and this is in every way my own personal opinion.....currently this is the most significant work of art aimed at LGBTQ+ community since the Stonewall riots

Yeah that line "you could murder someone and no one would say anything" really got my attention. Perfectly captures the kind of toxic thinking that seems to be so prevalent in these upper class schools and universities and by extension, the political and social elites of so many societies. So what we end up with is politicians and lawyers and bankers covering up each others' crimes because of this fucked up perception of "loyalty" and "us vs them".
Excellent conversation in this video too, thank you so much. :)

These grown women went out here and NAILED a show about gay teenage boys and the language and slang doesn't feel forced. The teenagers talk in this show like how actual teenagers speak. Its very hard for adults to pull that off because you can ALWAYS tell that they're trying to shoehorn in phraseology they think kids use, but the writers of this show didn't do that which imo is the best part of the show. Im not from Sweden so I couldnt tell you how teens over there talk, but id imagine its not much different from teens everywhere else. So bravo!

it seems they let the actors improv quite a bunch too (apparently edvin came up with half of the scene where wille is drunk/high at the football pitch?) so i'd assume they may have taken input to change the dialogue if what they'd originally written felt wrong to the kids, it's not a rare thing

    Dear Netflix Team
I would like to pay my respects to you by writing this what I acatually have never done before. With Young Royals, you have created something truly unique in my eyes, from the cast to the director.
I have never felt so emotionally addressed by a film or series.
Famous formats like Game of Thrones, for example, do inspire, but I think that for me at least, Young Royals has created something lasting. In my opinion, this is mainly due to the authenticity of the cast, which for the first time really reflects reality.
The decisive factor here is that there is no need to draw extra attention to diversity and socially critical issues. After all, these are the famous elephant in the room. This means that otherness is not exploited, but the essentials, namely the love between two people, are brought to the fore. This in turn creates real goosebump moments and you can absolutely feel the inner conflict.
Even though i don't share the sexual orientation of the characters, i definitely know how it feels to be ostracized by society or even worse to be made to behave differently just because you are different. The series has really helped me to question things and not take them for granted and for that i would like to express my gratitude.

You can tell these two women are very passionate about Young Royals and have put really good thought behind Young Royals. They brought up a lot of points about as to why teen shows are unappealing in a way because they are played by much older actors and the teen characters don’t feel and look like teens at all, and I agree fully with this. I think that is a part of the reason why I love Young Royals so much. It feels like I’m watching actually teenagers who have flaws and struggles and are still discovering themselves as people and growing. (The teens also have acne and bad hair days sometimes which makes it all the more relatable and realistic.) I also loved how they handled Simon and Wilhem’s relationship. It wasn’t hyper-sexualized and the characters felt like they actually had chemistry. Also, as the directors said, their sexuality isn’t what defines them. They are people outside of their sexuality and it isn’t all that they are.
Honestly I have so many good things to say about this series and it has to be one of the best teen dramas to come out of Netflix in a LONG TIME (Dare I say ever?). These two women are phenomenal and you can tell they really care about the story and craft. Props to them and everyone else who pulled Young Royals together to make it what it is now.
(Also the casting has to be the best I’ve seen in a long time. ALL of the actors showed up and showed out. Everyone was so good at their part and the acting really made this series along with the writing. All I’ve got to say is that they did really really good.)

These two women are incredible and I can see why the show turned out the way they did. Everything that they talked about in this video is so important. I especially loved when they mentioned how they wanted to cast actual young people that look like "ordinary people" because i think that is one of the reasons why we all love this show. Its raw and its natural. Not overly dramatic or "fantasy-like". They look like normal people, living normal lives with normal everyday stuggles. Beautiful, absolutely beautiful.
