- My Dad's 2007 Honda fit has developed a "fishbite" misfire under load at 130k miles.
I replaced the original spark plugs 20k miles ago, so what could be the problem this time?

A Honda Fit with a manual trans---your dad is a smart man. Being that it's an '07, and a Honda with only 130K on the clock, I had a feeling it was going to be something simple. Zero cost for the win!

Your dad is right! The electric field of a needle is fascinating mathematically! The field diverges towards infinity as the tip gets sharper, you can best solve it exactly by conformal mapping!
Corona discharges will eat away on your copper very quickly, making the problem even worse.

Yeah the cleaning likely smoothed out the sharp points, you want sharp edges at your spark plug positive electrode only, not anywhere else. It's not necessary to remove all sharp edges from the coil and boot, just sand it enough to make it duller than the spark plug so that the majority of the energy is being spent at the plug.

Your Dad nailed it for sure. The strong electric fields in high voltage applications can cause ionization and material breakdown, usually in predictable manner but because it is high voltage, it can also do crazy unpredictable things. So if you see things like that rubber-like compound breaking down, it was usually a strong electrical field responsible and not just old age or oxidation. These things are combatted with clean and solid terminations and silicone di-electric grease (or very large air gaps) just like you and Papa did. Notaknowitall, I just know what I know.
What your dad said about sharp edges and particles or ions is 100% correct . In HV power systems alot of effort is put into designing equipment with few sharp ends and all edges are machined to have no sharp right angles . This helps reduce corona where the air in the vicinity becomes ionised often it forms corrosive gases with atmospheric nitrogen producing nitric acid that reacts with copper to form green residue not unlike the green crusties you find on some connectors. In my old job I always trusted my nose in HV environments electrical arcing also forms ozone which has a distinctive smell I sniffed out much faulty equipment before it self destructed. Once arcing starts damage is being done .

The original ZAZ mechanic is a pretty sharp dude! I think there is something to his theory of electrolysis and ozone production degrading the materials of the coil/boot over time.
Definitely. Each time I take my coils out I can smell a really strong scent of the ozone. This has to have some effect on the conducting and insulating parts of the coil.

Your father has excellent taste in cars. They were called the Jazz here in the UK and I have seen these things go 200,000 miles with maybe a section of exhaust a clutch or sometimes a wheel bearing. We had one as a work vehicle on an industrial estate I worked on. 6 days a week it pretty much stayed running 11 hours a day driving around hauling guys or tools or equipment. If you fold down the back seats flat you can cram so much stuff into one of these.
Oddly enough here in the UK most of these Jazz's actually had like a hemi set up with 2 spark plugs/coils per cylinder. The L-series engine is also chain driven which is also a bit odd for a Honda.
LM auto repairs had one of these where somehow the top of the engine had got flooded by water and it had sat in the spark plug wells and destroyed the plugs and the coils. That was quite expensive. 8 brand new coils from Honda plus 8 iridium plugs.

Your Dad is spot on. When I was doing research with HV equipment I used to calm down the discharges by moulding Apiezon Q vacuum putty on sharp metal edges to move the air away from the very high electric fields that form around edges, dust and whiskers of metal. Looked awful but worked really well.
That trail was in better shape than most roads in New Jersey.

I feel envious when I see an older father and son, my father had a stroke and heart attack at 56 in 1976 I was 16, he was never the same until he died in 1993, cherish the time you have with your parents because you never know, thankfully I had my mom up until 2014 she was 92 but had Alzheimer's.

I'm not a mechanic but enjoy these videos. On the 'B' misfire the internet says: A “Type A” misfire will illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) if it detects a misfire that might cause the catalytic converter temperature to exceed 1,500-1,800° F. A “Type B” misfire will illuminate the MIL if a misfire occurs that might increase exhaust emissions, but not damage the catalytic converter.
Wow that is very interesting info! So Type A is a subset of Type B? 🤔
I have a 2006 Honda Jazz (European) and there's another, slightly older, in my family. Great cars, just basic maintenence and they will just run. I plan to keep mine for as long as I can.

Great troubleshooting as usual. Lucky that was a 1st Gen Fit. 2nd Gen Fit’s you have to remove wipers, plastic cowling, and metal tray that overhangs the firewall. Makes for a challenge whenever changing plugs or coils with that generation.
Exactly! 2011 Fit here- getting that stupid windshield washer fluid hose to stay put while putting it all back together is a pain!

It worked great. Thank you so much. I don't think very many people go down that far. I didn't replace the boots. I just cleaned off the carbon. I also replace the spark plugs. You have to be careful when you pull those boots off because I broke part of that coil off at the top, so the little pointy part of the coil was kind of sticking out. I tried to glue it back on, but it's some weird plastic. If anybody else does it be careful when you pull those boots off and they don't come off easy. Thanks again.

I had the exact same thing happen to my 2007 fit. Random misfires but mostly on one cylinder (a year later on the two adjacent to it) I diagnosed it down to the coil but never even thought about it being in the boot. Oh well, 3 new coils later and a set of plugs and it is running well. Thanks for the thorough diagnosis Ivan, I will look deeper next time!

Thanks for sharing! My father in laws Fit had a similar issue, I did plugs and coils and a year later a issue that went away once the coil was removed and installed.. seems to be fine for over a year now!
Ivan, love your channel. I have an 08 Fit, manual, same gen as your dad's. Never had the misfire problem yet and have 183,000 miles. Had a problem with a loose spark plug 10 K after changing them. Some owners have had the original, untouched factory plugs come loose. I figured it out due to a gasoline odor under the hood. Other thing was at 160 K, had an oil leak that was due to oil leaking THROUGH the oil pressure switch above the oil filter. Connector was all wet. Neighbor has a 2015 Mazda CX-5 that had the exact same issue a few months ago. Both were OEM switches. Fit has been very reliable otherwise.
Russian ingenuity. The spirit (not vodka) that keeps you alive when you are thousands of miles from the nearest decent parts store and it's freezing cold.

Just started watching your videos, great stuff! I am just south of Ithaca myself on the NY/PA border. Next time I have a vehicle issue I can't solve, I know who I am calling!
The bad contact on the high voltage spark circuit can not cause misfire, the HV really readily jumps over. But the discharge there tends to create ozone and UV, which then very quickly corrode all the plastics around, mainly when combined with heat. The ends of the coil (interfacing the boots) are the showcase.
Then the corroded plastic may cause the moisture to get in and form a current path on the surface, effectively short circuiting the high voltage circuit and that is what does cause misfires.
With the WD40 you may have cleaned the surface contamination so the misfire may go away for a while, but because how bad the coil ends are, I doubt it would be able to hold the moisture away, so my guess after short while the problem will be back.
So according to me the coils do need replacing, really all of them.
Your Dad sounds like he would fun to have a cup of coffee with.
We had an interesting case of ozone corrosion in a large generator some years back. The windings in the generator were breaking down and producing coronas which produced elevated levels of ozone. The air to cool the generator went through a TEWAC (totally enclosed water air cooler) which had copper fins soldered onto the tubes to help with heat transfer. The ozone attacked the solder and oxidized the zinc portion. By the time we discovered it, we were shoveling out zinc oxide powder in buckets, the coils were just dangling from the tubes and the generator was covered in dust. We ended up replacing both TEWAC's. Then we added insult to injury by using the wrong brazing material (vendor subbed an "equivalent" that was not approved for use) on the new exchangers and liquid metal embrittling them, haha.

Okay...good diagnosis and repair for the personal car. I'm wondering if that would be the best solution for a customer though which would depend on the cost of coils. Those plastic tips are surely destroyed meaning, the change in shape could alter the design of spark delivery. The boots did the job...good choice there as the coils are about $45 each. Long term my guess would be 4 new coils but only due to the "tracks" and damage made to the tips of those coils. Perfect example of why some sort of a maintenance plan is needed to get the effects of change in temperature humidity damage out of the socket/coil/plug.
Also remember some “cheaper” coils don’t come with the boot! So if someone went the cheap route (which with coils and plugs always best to stay with oem), they would have had to reuse the old boots and still probably have issues! But if someone pulled the boots and seen the crusties and still didn’t clean em up they get what they deserve lol
Personally, I would replace all of them.
@@B0xlife1 Best to buy the ones that do have boots, NGK or Denso. Coils are not the best parts to go cheap.

I’d bet the coil from cylinder 3 with the bad plug took some added work load, was moved to 2 and failed now.

Yep been there done that, corrosion gets em every time. Odd how it gets past the seals and just corrodes. I think a scope is such a great too, I find it odd there were no misfire codes set when it was obvious on the scope. Can you take a guess it didn't pop misfire codes? I think most people would have found this just by checking the plug boots without the scope, but it sure helps pinpoint those items that can't be physically checked without swapping a lot of parts at a small expense. The scanner was very helpful. Would be tough to catch it on a scope probe since it has coil on plug, and only acts up under load 🙂

I'm unsure of the Thinkcar scantool but the "a" and "b" misfire may be "emission related misfire" and "catalyst damaging misfire" Hyundai offers these options in the OEM scan tool that's the only reason I'm guessing that
I've seen where the spark blows through the boot on some Ford F350's. Tiny as there were, swapping coils found the misfire. We had the coil assembly, misfire gone. Following week, same vehicle, different cylinder misfire. Change all older coils and probably what started the misfires, the worn spark plugs.
Worn plugs require a higher breakdown voltage before the spark snaps, so that probably did stress out the boots (and coils too).
Probably pretty common to see those HD trucks behind on maintenance like plugs too.
