    I have my first queens, some sort of solenopsis species I believe...
    They are comparable to fire ants with how they frenzy and how small they are and aggressive...but they are black and not red, and cant feel it when they bite.
    They do have sort of red or brown knees, but black bodies and black feet..
    I caught them because they are the only ones I can find in my area, these and large carpenter ants, but I didnt have a test tube when those were flying around, I may have missed my chance..

    Mikey, I had some criticism for the previous nest designs, I was wrong but only partly. This new nest design is as pivotal to ant keeping as Uncle Milton's ant farms were in 1956 (which still sell today, possibly not much longer now). I can think of over a dozen people I've met who were interested in ant keeping immediately after they found out I kept ant colonies. The issue has always been housing the ants safely (escape-wise) and simply, it scares people away because it's not entirely easy. This new design is a winner all around.

    there is a device, the peltier cooler that could handle your heating and cooling needs, it dose not generate heat it pumps it from 1 side to the other via electric power , like a one-way valve, it could keep your ant farm to the exact temp you need if electronically controlled vie thermostatic pick up, and the peltier cooler also can be used to measure the difference in heat as it makes energy, and that can be used to measure the temp via heat conduction

  • @redstreak1
    @redstreak1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    For Honeypot ants (Myrmecocystus I think?), would the setups with medium moisture and larger openings (for the 9mm size queens) be the best choices or is there more to consider, especially if you aim to cater to the repletes?

    Would they chew through over time. I was gonna build a wooden one,... but everywhere I research, it would say overtime ants will chew through wood or concrete. Would you paint/treat the wood or cement with something so they can just travel and not dig?

      @lala12345ification 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The King of YT How do you get them back in the test tube specially if the colony grows? That is my biggest question how do you clean it without ants just going everywhere?

    • @harleyzhang3092
      @harleyzhang3092 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jose Luis Velazquez So basically you keep the test tube dark by taping coloured paper around it in a test tube with less water and more space. Then, remove the lid of the formicarium and shine a light over the nest. Ants are photophobic, so when light is present, they naturally get uneasy, and start finding somewhere dark and safe. A bigger colony and more active will find the test tube faster.

    How do you feed them in this nest and how do you clean the nest? How often? looks really cool.

    • @AntsCanada
      @AntsCanada  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This nest must be attached to an outworld, i.e. an aquarium or container where you place food. The ants will venture into the outworld and bring food back home into the next to feed the queen and the rest of the colony. This Hybrid Nest is kind of like a bird cage. You simply have to change the stuff in the bottom tray (whatever you are using for hydration) and it keeps the entire nest clean for a long period of time. The ants generally keep their nest maintained as best they can.

      I know I'm late, but usually the best ant to start with is Tetramorium, or the pavement ant. They start their nuptial flights around May, and are pretty easy to find and maintain. They're aggressive though, but not enough to harm you.

    Very promising product I like that it is well thought out . I have 2 Camponotus chromaiodes queens that I captured during a nuptial flight this year that both are close to having eclosed first generation. I will be getting the Camponotus large and place 1 queen and colony in it and the other in a competitors formicarium and see the results of the 2 colonies
