There was also another film with a similar title called "Mega Python Vs Gatoroid". That also starred Debbie Gibson and another 80's pop star Tiffany. However that film also flopped as well and didn't have many good reviews on it.
I don't think those kinds of movies actually aim for critical acclaim; they do them just for kicks, knowing they will be, deservedly, roundly panned. It's all in fun, and a bit of a paycheck to boot doesn't hurt.
