I’ve tried FulGaz for last 2 weeks riding about a dozen routes in Australia, some I’ve ridden in real life…the first person view is fantastic & really engaging… two half hours covering 62km with 1000+m of climbing (one part 6km @ 8% av) felt very realistic, thoroughly enjoyable and nothing like a normal trainer ride… I want to ride routes around the world I’ll probably never get to in real life, plus I’m not keen on the artificial feel of animated worlds or even that interested in the social aspect of Zwift- it’s just me the bike & the road

This will be my new addiction! Retired from teaching with loads of free time on my hands. Just waiting on an exercise bike that will be here in 3 days. I already bought a subscription to Fulgaz based on other reviews I've seen but yours was the most informative I must say. It does indeed look and sound very immersive! Cheers from Canada!!!

Thanks very much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate your feedback. Yep - Fulgaz is fantastic - the only time I've ever stepped off of an indoor trainer because the gradient was too tough (the Redbank climb on one of the routes around the Lake District). I've done that climb in real life and this was every bit as tough - but I was less fit. Enjoy sir.

@@TheImprobableIronman I inherited a Lemond Revmaster from my dad a few years ago. I've been doing half hour rides on it while watching TH-cam cycling videos. It rides beauifully with a 47lb flywheel but I can't add a speed sensor to it because there's no room between the flywheel and arm. That's why I'm getting the exercise bike. I could add power pedals to it but for that price I might as well get a new bike.

Nice review, in Rouvy you can switch your view point, so first person view is an option. In my opinion the best view because you see all this stunning scenery around the world. Also it seems most routes are uploaded from members so it depends which vehicle they used while filming, bike view can be annoying if they are out of the saddle. I think from a motorbike would be smoothest with a 2 wheel feeling.

Fulgaz is my 'GO TO' winter app. Here is a couple of hints. Get the Annual Subscription and you'll get a 2nd one to give away free. So find someone to split the cost and you both WIN! If you are going to ride a 'LOOP' ride, switch it to loop mode in the setting before you ride. The video with start over with each subsequent lap with out stopping, and you won't get any funky GPS data or weird Strava....it will just be laps. If you have a 4K TV, download the video before riding (Apple TV 64GB) and the video will play much smoother and less grainy as compared to streaming. 3 favorite rides - Cap Formentor - Mallorca, Brisbane River Loop, and the Flanders Blue Loop (ride all the best cobbled climbs of Flanders). And if you can find it..... Istanbul Coastal Ride - it's only 14 miles long and it was filmed in 720 (it's as old as Fulgaz). The person who filmed it is crazy. He runs every red light almost gets killed about 10 times, Loose paks of dogs running in the streets. You'll feel like you survived something when you do that ride. Video quality on that one isn't the best, but I hope they never take it down - it's that unique. Hope this info helps. Peace

Many thanks for this - great feedback and tips on Fulgaz. I hadn't realised the benefit of the 12 month plan - so that's definitely worth knowing. The Istanbul Coastal Loop sounds like it deserves a YT video in it's own right!! Thanks again.

Also know that the complete list of rides is also on their website. The metrics by which you search rides is MUCH better there than thru the app. You can pick rides by country, distance, elevation, time, etc. I go to the website for all my recon and then type it in on the app. With 500+ rides to search thru you'll find their website quite helpful with ride selections

Riders coming from Zwift will find the hills harder as FulGaz by default does not artificially adjust the gradient like Zwift does, but this is customisable

Nice but I find the AR and avatars overlayed with Rouvy more interactive and competitive. Lots of events and challenges and a career ladder to gamify it further. Their videos are increasingly now high quality, smooth and I've never had a drop. You have the ability to upload your own videos, though not tried that yet.

Nice review! I use Fulgaz as an occasional variation to Zwift and I am very impressed. As you say the resistance is great - to me it feels a bit harder than the equivalent on Zwift, probably because of the incredible amount of adjustment available in the settings. As a fellow Wattbiker the fact that it shows your current gear is a massive plus - never thought this would be an issue till I tried an application that didn't show the gearing! And how nice to be able to see some magnificent real world scenery during the current covid lockdown.

    • @TheImprobableIronman

Also I have the same set up as you with Apple tv (not the 4k version) and I get all the metrics - power, cadence, speed and heart rate. I don't recall doing anything convoluted to get these, so you should be able to. I think I just select power (wattbike) and heart rate, but still get the cadence from the wattbike! Will check next time I'm on and let you know!

Jumped into Fulgaz today... automatically detected power cadence and HR monitor. Can't recall any special settings that needed to be enabled, so I'm pretty sure that it was just a matter of clicking each of these on the initial set up. Hopefully you've already got it sorted, so ride on!

Just a note that slopes in Zwift are by default 50% realism, ie. cut in half. Slopes in FG are 100%, and you can adjust this to your liking in settings. So out of the box, FulGaz will have you feeling slopes more because they are real slopes!

Many thanks for this - I'm glad you found it helpful. Personally, I'm using a 50" TV. I actually think that for any of the indoor 'virtual reality' apps, the bigger the screen, the better. So basically - get the biggest your budget will run to. Apple TV is a great option in my opinion, however, do be conscious of the limited Bluetooth connectivity. Apple TV only gives you two spare Bluetooth channels - so if you are running a bluetooth trainer and also a bluetooth heart rate belt then bear this in mind - especially if you also wanted to use AirPods etc. This test was actually done using an Apple TV - so as you can see, it works pretty well. And I maintain that Apple TV is really one of the most cost-effective solutions out there. Thanks again for watching and commenting.

Great vid and really insightful. My only observation is the social component - like you said "jumped in swift and went with Tri club" it's that bit that still attracts. Add social to fulgaz and then there's a absolute winner - is that what rouvy attempts? Great vid, thx lots. 👍👍

If anyone reads this later, note that FulGaz recent version 4, has added a fair number of group events, and a 'ride with friends' feature. So they are gradually adding more of the social piece, without detracting from the clean-screen realism that is the FG mainstay.

I agree with you . Thanks for your interesting insights. I tried Fulgaz also for the first time today on my Schwinn stationary bike. I used an Apple TV connected to my Samsung smart TV. I could not get the heart rate to register. Any idea why not? I used another app (Kinetic) to register the power on iPhone. FTP Power is not the same units as Watts . Is that correct?
How accurate do you think the data on the screen in your case is? Also could you get the speed to stop immediately after you stopped peddling? I could not.

    • @TheImprobableIronman
      @TheImprobableIronman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm not familiar with the Schwinn bike so can only take a guess at what's going on. Make sure that the Bluetooth on the HR Belt is paired with the Apple TV. Make sure too that the Apple TV doesn't have too many Bluetooth devices trying to connect at once (I think it allows three connections - but uses one of those for it's own remote). With the Wattbike, it uses one Bluetooth connection for all of the smart bike functions and metrics - but if your bike handles them separately then that could be this issue.
FTP power will always be expressed in Watts - but it's different to your instantaneous power reading. FTP is a single metric that you test periodically to gauge how 'strong' you are - and how you are improving. Your FTP number is the theoretical number of watts that you could realistically sustain for one hour. You use FTP as a benchmark for training against.
With the Wattbike, the power is consistent and accurate. I've also not noticed any lag in speed as you describe - so that may be unique to your type of training bike.

    • @TheImprobableIronman

It all depends on whether your bike has connectivity. I'm not familiar with the Kaiser bikes but if they have the ability to connect to a PC / App via ANT+ or Bluetooth, then you should be OK. Ideally you'll want the bike to communicate power / cadence and, for the full experience, it would be best if the bike is controllable (like a smart trainer).

It definitely sounds like your trainer is not getting the resistance information from the app but if you can see the data on screen that the trainer is putting out then it should all be good.
