In this unique Ramadan course, Self-Knowledge: Towards a Qur’anic Anthropology, Hamza Yusuf examines Imam al-Raghib al-Asfahani’s Tafsil al-nash’atayn wa tahsil al-sa‘adatayn (An exposition of the two creations with means to the acquisition of the two felicities). Through the lens of the Qur’an, Imam al-Raghib, an eleventh-century polymathic exegete, presents a masterful study of the human being. Unlike any other work in the Islamic tradition, this short book leads a serious student into a completely Qur’anic perspective on what it means to be human, but more importantly, it explicates the means to achieve our God-given potential to realize true humanity (insaniyyah) in this life. In a time when postmodernist and nihilistic ideas of the self confound many, Imam al-Raghib provides a much-needed antidote by grounding us in true Qur’anic knowledge of the self, which results in knowledge of the universe, and in the meeting place of those two knowledges, one arrives at certainty of the Creator of one’s self and one’s world.

i want people to translate this into their native tongues, accurately, and put it on youtube-- i mean not necessarily subtitles, even dubbed (accurate translations in Urdu, Arabic, Russian, Malay, etc) it would drastically improve our people's understanding and our society would improve- and also, it's very fascinating, it's not boring

Alhamdulillah❤❤❤ i wrote down all the notes. I will revisit the rest of the sessions to recheck my scribbled notes that i did during my fasting(some notes i made then looked a bit like typos that come from outerspace, haha), but jazakumullahkhairan khatira to Sheikh Hamza Yusuf and the Zaytuna team for making the ramadhan session a meaningful one. May Allah preserve and spread knowledge of the scholars. Love them all for the sake of Allah❤

It's a climax from traditional Matrix of knowledge, but modern scholars need to push further into the modern context. The spiritual blessings on earth are continually exposed and tasted with more knowledge of the worlds and more work involving management of the worldly affairs

Assalamu Alikum. I am a student of knowledge and my parents were not Muslim when I was growing up. I pray to Allah SWT that my Mother's Shahada was accepted by HIM, the arRaham arRahim, before she died just over 2 months ago, Ameen. Theoretically, I understand what is being discussed. However, I must to ask a question of Sheik Jusuf, InshaAllah. If a person is given the desire and will from Allah SWT to learn and to grow in Islam. If they put in the time, effort, and faith to become a competent scholar of Islam. Could it be that their insight to the "sins" that are carried through generations, their environment growing up, all of the things they are exposed to that perhaps are Haram or Makruh make them so much more cognizant of what it takes to help other people become Revert Muslims or even help Muslim's born to Muslim families remain Muslim. I am a Revert Muslim, and it actually really hurt me when I heard that it is Makruh for Revert Muslims to lead the prayer. By definition of Revert, were not a good portion of the Sahaba revert Muslims? Please tell me why this hurts my heart enough that I would write about it here, and almost on the eve of the time of Arafat? Astaghfirullh, Allah SWT forgive me of my sins, Ameen. Forgive all your righteous slaves of their sins, Ameen. SubhanAllah, AllahuAkbar, La Illah Ila Allah. I love you Sheik and Brother Jusuf for the sake of my Lord and Protector, Allah SWT. I pray you will not take offense to this pain I feel and have expressed herein, Ameen.

I love Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, but I am uncertain why needs to mention people of ideologies that are not from Islam. I think it will just confuse some into thinking that it is an aspect of the religion. These ideologies are purposefully made to misuse Islam as a tool, but are from individual/groups who are not a part of islam, that distort the religion for criminal/political purposes. They have existed in history, been called Khawariji, been known for enmity towards the Prophet Muhammed (SAW) and his family. These are satanic groups outside the religion of islam, who hate the beloved of God and don't believe in the true message that he taught.
