Absolutely loved that Luke thanks so much for all the hard work and effort. My Mum is from the East End and was evacuated to Bletchley Bucks when their home was bombed in WW2. Good old working class people the men worked on the Docks. We emigrated to Australia in the 1970's and I miss my homeland to this day so content like yours is VERY important to me and gives me a greater understanding of my background. I have shared this with Mum now 88 and the last member alive of her large family - this will be very important to her too. If you ever come across any Sheaf's in the graveyard then that's us lot! God bless Luke positive vibes and best wishes from Sydney Australia ❤🏴
Hi Sandra. Ah, bless you & thanks for the lovely comment "that means a lot" + it nice to hear that, the content is evoking memories & bringing enjoyment!! Bless her "some loved evacuation = & sadly for others, that wasn't the case." Yeah, they were a tough generation, those old Eastenders "really admire that generation tbh = especially the ones who got us through both world wars" A lot of people emigrated there in the 70s = tbh, I think it was a wise decision "as London is pretty chappy nowadays, especially in the East End & East London." But, its home & there are good people around still. Bless you both "glad you enjoyed the video." 88, she'll have accumulated some great memories then 😊. I'll note down the name "in case I spot any, for you" as I'm doing a few cemetery tours at the moment, so 🤞. Hi Luke, I've just stumbled across this vlog and had to watch it. I was brought up pretty much opposite East London cemetery, in fact, my dad's ashes are interred there. As a kid in the late 50's and throughout the 60's my mates and I used to play in the cemetery, as bad as that sounds. The part that backs onto The Memorial Grounds (incidentally West Ham United's former ground prior to Upton Park) was all overgrown and jungle-like, so we had a great time playing there. Happy memories of a bygone era. Thank you.

The actual place of burial for Elizabeth Stride is not known. When she was buried in 1888, the grave was unmarked! after consulting burial records, the actual site is NEAR the present gravestone, but not actually there.
Hi Craig. Ah rite, thanks for this info mate! Much appreciated. I think the map of the bomb site is wrong. Gainsborough Road school is a ten minute walk from the cemetery you show an area much further east around four miles away and in a completely different borough. I should know I went to Gainsborough infants and junior school in the sixties and lived in adjacent Godbold Road for many years. Many of the fallen firefighters have local roads named after them Tarling Road and Turley Close to name but two. Walter Turley was killed on September seventh 1940 during the first bombing raid of the blitz.

Carl Hans Lody is only one of the people in that grave. All 7 of the German POWs who had died from illness or accidents are buried there, as well as 11 German spies who were shot at the Tower. Lodys' family and the Germans kept petitioning to have him buried separately but it wasn't possible because all the coffins were cemented shut. The memorial is in another part of the cemetery, and the chair that Josef Jakobs was exceuted in is on display in the White Tower on the top floor

My friend, those of us with widescreen TVs would appreciate it if you and others would make these by holding the camera horizontally and not vertically. Watching a little sliver in the middle of the screen is very frustrating.
Hi Walter. This was filmed when I first began the page. I never film in portrait for TH-cam nowadays! Better tech + a learning curve, as things went along. I will be redoing this one, soonish = & will film it in landscape "so will be much more suitable for the wide-screen." Duscivered my error myself, when watching the videos on the TV "once my Nephew had shown me how to do that." & yes, portrait just doesn't work for TH-cam, does it!! We live & learn, as the old saying goes. Thanks for the feedback 👍✌️

The war grave at 09:56 SJT stands for his rank of Serjeant. Nowadays it's spelt with a G and not a J. The headstone was paid by the government, however, if the family wanted a saying put on the bottom of the headstone they had to pay for it.

Is it the City of London Cemetery?
God bless & thanks for the positive vibes, Sandra "much appreciated + the support on the page." Very best wishes to You & your Mum 😊💙✌️
Good Video. Thanks.
Went there for the first time in my 68 South East London years recently and did not realise it was so near The Blackwall Tunnel..
No problem at all 🙂. Hope you enjoyed it. Yeah, literally a 5 minute drive from the Blackwall Tunnel + opened in 1873 & covered a large swathe of East London ✌️
Next to the military marker for Maurice Wagg is an American Civil War star marker, the GAR stands for Grand Army of the Republic. Thank you for this video.
Hi Dan. Fascinating video....really sad about the Jack the Ripper victim...I understand Joseph Merrick ie the Elephant Man is buried in East London somewhere.....I live in Leicester where he was born and his mother is buried in Welford Road Cemetery in Leicester
Thanks Johno 🙂 glad you enjoyed it!! Yeah, bit grim but "his flesh was removed from the skeleton, the skeleton kept by the London Hospital, what was not kept, was coffined & buried in a common grave in The City of London Cemetery" = the grave was lost for many years & has only been rediscovered in recent times!! I'll be visiting that Cemetery soon = to of course see Mr Merrick's grave & also to visit the Jack The Ripper Victim + some other interesting/famouse people buried there.
Thank you.
Hi there. Glad you found the vlog 😊 I'll be re-coveribg this one, in the new year = with much better tech + in portrait mode this time "so, you'll see a larger image, than this one." I think most of us kids local to the cemetery "played in or around it, at some point = great adventure playgrounds = good days ay mate 😊." I didn't know that, about the memorial ground "having previously been West Ham's original ground" = cheers for that info, interesting new fact learned there 👍. Glad you enjoyed the video & thar it evoked some happy memories 😊👍✌️

Hi there. That'll be one that "I'll get round to covering, eventually." My Dad was telling me about Timothy Evans. I had no idea that Blakey is buried there though = cheers for this info "really appreciate that." ✌
The actual place of burial for Elizabeth Stride is not known. When she was buried in 1888, the grave was unmarked! after consulting burial records, the actual site is NEAR the present gravestone, but not actually there.
Hi Craig. Ah rite, thanks for this info mate! Much appreciated. I was talking to someone who used to work at the cemetery, recently & he said "when the area was reused for new burials in the 60s = tons & tons of earth were laid over the area." As regards Elizabeth Stride, a recent investigative documentary researched the victims of Jack the Ripper, and discovered his victims were not prostitutes, but were portrayed as such by the media in their drive to make the case notorious to gain increased readership. Rest in peace Elizabeth. ⚘️

@@londonluke6487 so we will ignore transcripts from the inquests where family and close acquaintances stated that the victims did indeed sell themselves. Hi John. My voice? ✌️
You guys in the UK take way better care of your deceased way better than we do here in the USA, it's sad and heartbreaking to say it but it's true.
Some of your cemetarys are very beautiful. I guess it depends what town they are in.
Funny you saying that = I'm of American descent myself & a keen family historian too. & the record keeping is much better here, than in New Jersey & Maryland, when my family came from. Not all of our cemeteries & churchyards are as well kept as this one though, being honest!! This is one of the best kept East London cemeteries. It's sad to see a cemetery neglected ay ✌️
@@annhollowell5352 that's true Ann!! This one is one of the better kept ones = but sadly, they're not all like this ay. So, yeah you're 100% correct = a lot of it depends on area/location ✌️
@@londonluke6487 yeah it's sad when people who are deceased are basically forgotten about and not visited by family and friends, thank you for sharing the stories about the forgotten you are their voice.
Thanks for this info 👍 I'll look into this! Yeah, I remember my Dad telling me that "a good few of the local streets had been named for them" ✌️

The Jarvis family. 'Tragedy' is a word tossed around casually but not in this case.
Exactly Graeme!! You're not wrong there!! Poor family = probably a mercy that the dad died the day after, without ever having heard what'd happened. Doesn't bare thinking about, the thought of having to live with something like that 🕊✌️
My family have been buried there since 1878. In one area. There is a cluster of graves containing my great grandfather, great grandmother, grandmother, grandfather and father.
That's nice that they were buried so near each other! + good to have the continuity "always good to know your roots & where /who you come from." 👍👌✌️
@@londonluke6487 you may find this utterly boring, but around fifteen years or so ago, I was visiting for a clean up and my great grand parents headstones - Harriet and Charles (Charlie) Pigeon - had sagged between the graves and their head stones had leaned in and were touching. I found it very poignant and it choked me up… Sadly the corporation straightened them up a few years afterwards…..
@@londonluke6487 Great roots and a firm base are what makes us all strong my friend!
@@TheWizardOfTheFens Couldn't have put that any better myself 👌👍🤞
I like seeing these videos. As long as the names are said out loud their not forhotten
Hi Pam. Glad you're enjoying them = I've some good ones coming up soon "The City of London Cemetery." Yes, you're right there "its a sad thing, for people to be forgotten" isn't it 🕊✌️
Queenie watts was in Yus my Dear with Arthur Mullard in 1976
Another fantastic programme = my parents have that on DVD, & introduced me to it, last year!! Romany Jones is another good one, I've enjoyed recently too, Ruth Arthur Mullard & Queenie Watts 👌✌️
So the short film at the end is of Queenie Watts? Nice one, but beware of the copyright fascists!!
Interesting video!
Yeah, that's Queenie at the end Mike. Lol they can get a bit irate the copyright "fascists is a good title for them actually" 🤣 that's going on my grammar nazi list. Glad you found it interesting. I'll usually delete a video, if I'm copyrighted = so, if ever you can't find one, that's what's happened ✌️
Thanks for this information "much appreciated" & very interesting!! Yes, I've seen the separate memorial for him & "thought that his grave tbh." The chair, I've seen a few tines now = a very dark/sobering & poignant object. Thanks again for this information 👍✌️

Stay free. Rab 🍻 😎 👍
Thanks Rab 👍 much appreciated. Best wishes & thanks for the sub & likes ✌️
The pennies on Elizabeth Strides grave are in remembrance that Elizabeth did not have enough money just the few pence needed for a bed for the night, sadly she met Jack the Ripper.
Thanks for this info 👍 Now that, I didn't know "love learning new things = especially with history." Poor ladies 🕊. Thanks again 👍✌️
I use to go couple of time my sister n cuz had die rip ❤😢
The piano player was great too.
He really was! That's something "you don't see nowadays" pianos in pubs = the pubs that are still around that is, & there's nowhere near as many in the East End as there used to be. Must a Been a great atmosphere ✌️
The war grave at 09:56 SJT stands for his rank of Serjeant. Nowadays it's spelt with a G and not a J. The headstone was paid by the government, however, if the family wanted a saying put on the bottom of the headstone they had to pay for it.
Thanks for this information, Andy "much appreciated." I'm really sorry for the late reply "I'm having ongoing problems with my notifications" & am having to check back manually through the posts, for comments ✌️
The rank Serjeant is very much still alive in the British Army; The Rifles use this spelling.
Hey Luke have you ever been to Alperton cemetery by any chance? I have two ancestors there and I cannot find photos of their graves anywhere online. I'm from America and have never been to the UK so that's why I've never visited them.
