    It's not that Pearl promised not to tell. Pearls cannot disobey a direct order from the gem they were made for. Pink gave her one last order as a Diamond, that she couldn't speak of it and no one could know the truth. Once Steven found out the truth, the order was broken.

      Exactly she physically wasn’t able to say anything.

    • @rafaelmatos5851
      @rafaelmatos5851 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +34

      I don't think that's it. The orders a Pearl gets are absolute. She couldn't tell anyone that Pink and Rose were the same person, but she wasn't prevented from showing it. That's why one of Pearl's subconscious versions lured Steven to the Palanquin memory. Once Steven discovered it, he was the one to verbalize the secret, leading to Garnet and Amethyst to know it as well, meaning Pearl was now free to talk about it. Basically, Pearl is prevented from revealing Pink's identity, but once someone gets to know the secret, then she is free to talk about it with them.

      I also think there’s a little bit of evidence suggesting that pink didn’t actually realize her orders were that literal.
      Like, she says to Garnet ‘no more questions, don’t ever question this’ and now it’s one of the script writing rules that garnet cannot phrase something as a question, or with her ordering a certain future character to stay put. I doubt she fully intended those to be indefinite orders to be followed into perpetuity.
      I believe Pink was immature enough that she didn’t fully realize that an order from a diamond is something gems literally physically cannot break

      @@caitrose2198 Only Pearls are bond to follow the orders of their owners to the letter, since that's their role: to be personal servants to one specific Gem. The other Gems follow orders because they want to. Remember the way Peridot was before, she actually believed Yellow Diamond could do no wrong. Once she saw the true side of her Diamond and that her status meant nothing to her, she turned against her.

    Sapphire being visibly more upset by Rose’s lie makes sense. When joining the rebellion, sapphire had to give up a lot more than Ruby did (her status and role in gem society/blue diamond’s court). She’s also angry about being unaware of Rose’s true identity since her whole purpose is to always see ahead of everyone and know everything for their sake. Her not knowing the truth about their leader until now when she had the abilities to must have terrified her.

    • @rafaelmatos5851
      @rafaelmatos5851 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

      I think the biggest issue with Sapphire is the broken trust, more than what she sacrificed. Don't forget that Sapphire sacrificed her status before joining the Crystal Gems when she saved Ruby from being shattered. Even in the fusion, it's Sapphire who is in charge of the future vision. However, her absolute trust in Rose made her to not dare to use her future vision to spy on her secrets. For 6 thousand years, Sapphire always believed on Rose's lies about Pink Diamond being the enemy, she never questioned her leadership... But getting to know everything was a lie and realizing she had the power to know the truth made all the trust Sapphire had on Rose to be broken and react the way she did.

    One nice touch in "What's Your Problem" is how Amethyst's behavior at the start of the episode parallels how Steven acted in "Steven vs. Amethyst" when he was trying to cheer up Amethyst. In that episode, Steven tried to play video games with Amethyst and let her win so that she would feel better. Here, Amethyst is the one asking Steven to play video games with her. And we later learn that she did that to try to make Steven feel better. It really shows how Amethyst has come full-circle since that time and how much she has grown.

      Amethyst has also been excluded from all Pearl Garnet and Rose’s ‘war talk’ and whatever, she never met bismuth and she knows that the other gems view her as someone immature and incapable of handling certain secrets. I think she heavily relates to Steven in this sense, that’s why they have such a strong bond earlier in the series, she sees garnet and pearl trying to leave him out of stuff the way they left her out. She’s uniquely qualified to comfort Steven here bc she’s the only one who’s even remotely close to in the same position

      Even if Pink Diamond did mature a little and was no longer the spoiled brat she used to be before being given the Earth and how she matured even more after starting to fight for Earth, the fact is that she never quite stopped in being childish. You can see that during the flashbacks with her as Rose. She never quite measured the consequences of her actions and most of her decisions were made on a whimp.

    • @ThePictureofGregorSamsa

      @@rafaelmatos5851 I agree. I think a part of it was she never stopped believing the lies taught to her by the diamonds. You can see this when she sees garnet fuse and says “only on earth” which we the audience later learn isn’t true. Fusions of different types happen on homeworld, but it’s ignored by their society and shunned. I think in her tape to Steven we see her reason for passing her gem on to Steven is based in her misunderstanding of the way gems work, “gems never change they’re made to be what they are then they are that forever”. which the series constantly shows isn’t true, the gems change like humans if they allow themselves to, but because of gem society punishing them they don’t let themselves grow. Pink thought humans were so amazing because they were always changing, but didn’t understand why that was. It wasn’t because humans are so different than gems that they change constantly and gems don’t, it’s that gems are taught and told to be a certain thing, and punished if they fall out of line. So they are traumatized into being scared of exploring their own identities as individuals. When gems come to earth they’re free to explore their identities and learn to not be afraid to express themselves.

      @@rafaelmatos5851 to me i don't see her as still childish, just still ignorant and curious, and I don't think curiosity or ignorance makes you childish. there were still things that she didn't know and she was still impulsive, but that's not contained to children. adults are impulsive, they're ignorant and silly and curious and whimsical all the time. to me, at the end of her arc, she is all of those things. her childish persona seems to be completely dropped at that point, she no longer feels like a bratty kid throwing tempertantrums. and that is to say that there's really nothing wrong with being childish, she just doesn't feel that way to me; largely ignorant instead.

    "We're Only Falling Apart" really shows how Garnet changed everything. It's not just about the fact she made Rose start fighting for Gems, but also because of Sapphire's original vision. If you remember, she had predicted that Rose and Pearl would be captured and the rebellion would end. If that had happened, then the Diamonds would discover Pink's secret and one can only imagine what would have happened if they discovered it. For starters, Pink would most likely be punished and the control of Earth would be taken from her and given to either Yellow or Blue who would finish the colonization. There's even an AU about that...

    During the song "what's the use of feeling Blue" during the human zoo episodes its revealed that all the Rose Quartz gems were bubbled and Blue keeps them stored in the main room of the zoo. As punishment because "entire cut and gem should be shattered for what she did"

      @rafaelmatos5851 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Yeah... even if Rose/Pink had a noble reason to do what she did, that doesn't erase the consequences of her actions. The bubbled Rose Quartzes is just the peak of the iceberg. We can't forget about all the Gems that were shattered and corrupted during the war... not to mention the forced fusions, like the Cluster. After all, the Cluster is made of millions of gem shards that were once Crystal Gems. The Crystal Gems were able to sort of liberate the Earth, but even that came to a very high price.

    Amethyst's reaction towards Rose's secret is actually quite easy to understand. After all, when Amethyst met her, the war for Earth had already ended. She was only told about Pink Diamond being the "big baddie". That's why that, despite the initial shock, she took it quite well, because the reveal about Rose and Pink being the same wouldn't cause her that many issues or have a significant change on her feelings for Rose. However, she knew the same wouldn't happen with Steven, so she decided to make him feel better, since she couldn't stand seeing her favorite person suffering.

    SU really is peak fiction for me. This show just does so many things so freaking right that it's insane sometimes. And one of those things it does so right is the characters. Every character is complicated but I agree that Rose may be the most complex. And I think it's important for people who watch the show to understand that the writers also think these characters are complex and multi-faceted. They're not trying to make you think any character is all good or all bad. That's simply too reductive and not representative of real people. SU writes its characters with clear eyes, acknowledging their flaws just as much as their strengths. So when Pearl is saying things like maybe Rose was foolish and selfish, that is an acknowledgement of one aspect of Rose. But Rose was more than that too. There's just something beautiful to me about how well-rounded SU's characters are and how unafraid the show is of making the "good guys" look bad. And this is all happening in a children's cartoon and it's being pulled off so well? Just, how does this show even exist?

    I think a lot of people are forgetting that Ruby is not a kid, it is unfortunate that Amethyst was kinda "meh" to Ruby running away but then again, Ruby is not a child, she's her own person and Amethyst knows Ruby can do what she wants since that's what Amethyst did when she's dealing with her problems so you really can't blame Amethyst for not doing anything about Ruby. "Welcome to shrug city" as she would say.

    An important thing to note is that we are seeing Rose/Pink’s character development *in reverse.* when we’re first introduced to her we see the kind, thoughtful, wise, caring person she was at the end of her life, but seeing all these flashbacks, we can see that she started as someone immature, entitled, bratty, and selfish. This sours our view of her but that doesn’t change how she ended up.
    Some people incapable of nuance like to rant about how rose/pink was and always will be a bad person but it’s not like that. She started out as childish and short sighted and impulsive and thoughtless, she did do a bunch of crummy stuff like bubbling bismuth or lying to the other crystal gems, but by the time she met Greg she was a genuinely thoughtful, caring, loving being. That wasn’t an act, that was her learning and growing as a person.

      Fusion is the embodiment of relationships... all kind of them. Garnet is the embodiment of Sapphire and Ruby's love for one another, explaining why they are almost always together. But Malachite, for example, is the embodiment of the toxic relationship between Jasper and Lapis.

  • @dewdney101
    @dewdney101 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    My understanding of Saph/Garnet's FV and why she didnt know about Rose/Pink:
    FV is not a passive ability like how media usually presents psychics/oracles/pre-cogs etc. She is not Raven Baxter having random visions out of her control. Like with all gem powers, it requires effort and intent (Steven and his emotions being the exception). In Garnet's existential crisis ep, as you called it a few reactions ago lol, we see her and Steven putting in the work to better access more future possibilities.
    Sapphire says in this episode that she trusted Rose and therefore never looked into her as someone to be suspicious of. It's the same situation as when Pearl was rebuilding the communication hub just to fuse with Garnet. Garnet said she couldn't see Peridot with her FV and didn't know how she was evading it. Garnet wasn't suspicious of Pearl or any other CG and therefore never looked into possible futures where anyone besides Peridot was messing with the tower.

    Yeah, one of the (many) ways this show is influenced by Utena is the way it does flashbacks, where for most of the show it's black silhouettes with colored clothing and hair, indicating that something important is being misremembered or left out. When we finally do get a flashback animated in the show's regular style, it fills in missing pieces that change everything we believed about those events. (SU doesn't stick to it quite so much as Utena, which uses the style change for all flashbacks; SU only uses them for Garnet's flashbacks. But then, Greg's and Steven's flashbacks aren't changed by what we learn here.)

      Like Pearl said, Pink Diamond's status meant nothing to the other Diamonds. After all, they treated her as if she was a spoiled kid (and she kind of was, if you remember "Jungle Moon"). Pink Diamond wanting to terminate the colonization was not an option, since the other Diamonds would demand her to finish it and, even if she didn't, they would finish it themselves and Pink would be punished. However, by starting a war with a new identity, she would be able to freely drive all the other Gems off the planet.

There would’ve been a lot more episodes, and more episodes of Future, if Cartoon Network hadn’t thrown a fit over the big event episode that happens soon that I’m not gonna spoil, and we would’ve gotten to see more of what made Pink/Rose change.
      She *was* a selfish, immature person, and she grew and changed during her time on earth, but watching the show we see this in reverse so it feels like she’s worse than she really was. I think those extra episodes would’ve really helped
