    God, these things have such a uniquely beautiful aesthetic. You see giant laser beams and supernukes in future fantasy all the time, but these things were just so visually distinct. Like the lightsabers of space combat, they were truly an elegant weapon from a more civilized age.

      Slevin Channel Yeah they can return according to cannon, but when the Terrans use them it is always a difficult situation that along with the danger and their general inexperience with using them in the most effective way possible, the Drones are almost always drained of their energy supply and as such explode before returning.

      There is already an episode where drones were used against an Ori Ship. Season 10, Episode 13. Sam in an alternate reality where the Ori ships already attempted to attack Earth but the Ori ships were driven off when the Ancient Weapon Platform fired drones at the Ori ships.
      That suggests that the Ori knew the drones were powerful enough to destroy their ships since they high-tailed it out of the system after it activated.

    • @Spacedock
      @Spacedock  7 ปีที่แล้ว +222

      Yeah it was, especially given that two drones can knock out a Ha'tak, but we can probably assume that since Sheppard was using both Ship-Mounted Drones and a Neural Interface for the very first time, he likely just emptied the rack and launched everything at once, either just to be sure or because he didn't have time to figure out how to use the weapons with more finesse.

    • @weldonwin
      @weldonwin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +157

      He's probably still applying what he knows from Airforce training, where its common tactics to fire missiles in volleys of two or more, to ensure a kill and this is his first time engaging a Dart in ship to ship combat and so doesn't know yet how many drones is sufficient, so goes for overkill to be on the safe side.

    • @VestedUTuber
      @VestedUTuber 7 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      There's also the fact that there are different drone sizes, ranging from point-defense microdrones to the large units fired by Auroras and Cityships. it could be possible that Puddle Jumpers fire smaller drones.
      That being said, one of those should still be able to take out multiple fighters. Those were the ones that took out a Ha'Tak, after all.

    • @Ziffidel
      @Ziffidel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Please note that you are correct. At the time of Sheppard firing those drones, they only ever saw the drones once, at the antarctic base. At that point of the series, the Tar'ri didn't fully understand the weapon. Spacedock, he was in fact using it for the first time. Before that episode, he only activated a star-chart of the galaxy which is very different form controlling drones.

    A potential weakness of this weapon system that never really gets explored in the show is their relatively slow travel speed, deployment time, and short range. We see it take sometimes upwards of a whole minute for these things to be released from a Lantean ship and finally make contact with a target. The weapon really does entirely rely on superior Lantean shield and hyperdrive technology to jump into extreme close proximity to their enemy and release them so their target can't react. I gotta imagine if the range wasn't close enough, a giant flak field could act as a shield destroying all the drones as they moved in.

    • @alexrossouw7702
      @alexrossouw7702 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Good point, but speed and individual survivablility isn't needed in swarm tactics, simply by the fact you've overwhelmed the enemy with sheer numbers. Also the form one part of an array of Lantean weapons, so lot's of punches and kicks, and drones on top of that.

    • @nihilityjoey
      @nihilityjoey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      What? Where are you getting the idea of limited range from? And what difference would it make about the ships shields hyperdrive...........when the weapons GO THROUGH SHIELDS? Seriously here man, how is this flak field going to destroy a weapon that cuts through anything seen like butter? The drones are controlled through the chair interface neurologically, and as we've seen ancient tech using their mental capabilities was effective over extra galactic distances. There is no weakness there. Other than your own making.

    • @orcmcc
      @orcmcc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@nihilityjoey The limited range (due to the limited energy supply) and slow deployment time (compared to lasers/beams) means the crew is dependant on there defensive systems (shield, armour, flak, etc) tanking the first few hits from there opponent, or being able to close the distance fast enough to minimise the time-to-hot post launch. A Flak field would be effective because the energy field around the drone gets depleted when hits solid matter. Hence the 2-3 pass throughs before detonation. If you can drain that energy supply with multiple flak hits before it can impact the target, you can either force a premature detonation, or limit the drone to a singular pass though. Against a swarm it wouldn't be worth it, but against a puddle jumper's contingent, it may keep your own ship alive.

    I think it's probably fair to say that the humans won't be able to remake the drones for use on human ships.
    But I hope we get to see them try to approximate the same style of this weapon.
    For example we could make a drone that functions like a nuclear missile except with a nuke and shields and we would deploy them in groups of 3, 6 or 9.

    • @patrickwilkinson7351

      @patrickwilkinson7351
      That would be nice but I doubt we would be allowed by the writer to keep such power.
      Whenever we get war level weapons from the ancients they are either very limited because of power requirements or something happens that causes their destruction.
      This is exactly why my original comment was pessimistic about recreating the ancient drones.
      It's not that we couldn't, they just wouldn't let us.
      We could reverse engineer the drones by dissecting some open and use the asgard computer corps to help analyze it and duplicate the functionality.
      But no, that won't happen because the humans would become too powerful and the story would just stop evolving.

    i would like to point out one flaw in an other wise superb video, in the episode which the mini drones are featured STA s4e14 they state that the planet is a testing ground where the Lanteans first developed drone technology, so it is more logical to assume that the mini drones are a early prototype rather then a special anti personal version.

      In this episode it is stated that it was, yes, a tinkering ground, but that the little drones were still modelled after their bigger counterparts. However, the anti-person drones might have been never used in combat until then. So I guess, both is kind of right?

      The Drones at the Antarctic Outpost were millions of years old, far older than the Lanteans development of the smaller planetary Drones in Pegasus. They were a new development of a type of Drone based on their larger counterparts. That also says something about the Lantean Military that they never upgraded the Drones and used the same type for millions of years. I'm sure this has been said, but it always really bothered me that they never said that Atlantis was equipped with a drone manufacturing facility (as far as I can remember), which makes no sense.
    I know the series would have been over before it started if they could produce unlimited drones, but they could have at least said that the factory was destroyed by water damage, or better yet, actually explored the factory, even if it were damaged. I always wanted to see one.

      The ancients did use devices that could integrate with ones mind, allowing the user to design devices and "3D Print" those projects directly by converting energy into matter. There is an episode on season 10 of SG-1 were an ancient do this. The Asgards also had this capability. The ancients also had advanced nanite technology that could be used on the manufacturing process. So most likely Atlantis was equipped with the required manufacturing facilities for both drones production and probably ZPMs as well. The main issue most likely is on the power requirements, the ability to operate the devices.

    i never understood why we never found any production facility i mean the Ancient battleships couldnt carry millions but say they only carried a few thousand eventually they would run out wouldn't it make more since to instal a small drone production area on board feed it raw materials and it produces a drone the same with Atlantis its big enough to have several not to mention shipyard to build ancient battleships and cruisers the same with Jumpers and their version of fighters

      christopher terry ancient were idiots all their production facilities were in their home world (aka Atlantis) a behaviour also showed when they were in the milky way, they were probably too afraid of everyone else, they knew if they ever go to war it would be their technology what it would save them so as you can guess you can't allow anyone put their hands in your production facilities

    • @jossgoyanko7006
      @jossgoyanko7006 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it's a hybrid energy/projectile weapon, so presumably the Replicators could adapt to lesson their effectiveness, but they may not be able to stop them entirely. They could adapt to the Drone's energy field that makes it so potent, but they wouldn't be able to stop them from impacting and detonating.

    • @Son37Lumiere
      @Son37Lumiere 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The replicator story in Atlantis actually explains this, after the SGA team comes across the replicator home world one of the replicator's tells them the story of how they came to be. Essentially the Ancients created them and then destroyed them with the drones once they couldn't control them any longer, but some of the nanites survived. So like the Asgard's O'Neill class energy weapons, they are capable of destroying most of the replicator nanites but some inevitably survive.

      Adrian Fisher it is said that the Atlantis database is very large, and even towards the end of the series they said they “have only scratched the surface” so it is basically trying to sort through information, in a language you don’t know, in a database large enough to rival all of human knowledge.
      It’s very likely that they could and the facilities could even be on Atlantis itself but they just haven’t found the folder that is titled “super advanced space tech”

    My only question is, if used against a Starfleet ship, such as the Enterprise, would they be able to get past their shields if they are constantly changing their shield frequency?

    • @Twilord_
      @Twilord_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Given that Ancient tech has a habit of side-stepping reality (no seriously, their inventions routinely access other dimensions where physics behaves how the want) I'd not be surprised if phasing through wasn't an issue.
      Plus any crossover kinda has to account for the fact that Stargate's tech is on the scale of galactic and intergalactic species; while the closest thing in Stargate is the Borg's intra-galactic travel; and that the Ancients also have that 'humans are magic factor' but with millions of years more R&D under their belt whereas Star-Trek is set in the millennia.
      Although to be fair to Stargate it's attitude was always 'the smug civilization messes up and offs itself'. The Wraith were basically headed that way and even the Tau'ri were confronting that potential within themselves in the Milky-Way sub-plot of SGU.

    • @gigaya777
      @gigaya777 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      quite possible but for what we saw the drone can read the frequency and adapt according the new circumstances the question is how fast can the drone "read" the new frequency, keep in consideration the drone is not like a common missile the drone can be given new orders so if the drone is not fast enough but the ship sensor is fast enough the ship can easily read the new frequency and tell the drone to change the frequency
      the ancient drone is the supreme weapon in stargate
