$50 in fees per month x 8 months is $400 in fees per year. That’s significant. Using CS also helps by not having to hunt around for an ATM with lower fees as they will practically refund _any_ fee amount charged by the ATM operator for a straight cash withdrawal in local currency. They will not however refund fees paid for the scammy dynamic conversion scheme (and I don’t blame them for that).

Hi Gabriel, I can't imagine that anyone says or thinks what you're doing is easy it definitely isn't. I'm sure over time traveling so much you've adjusted to the rigors of traveling. I believe that's why it gets difficult to travel to new locations and adapt in the same way because going somewhere new brings a new set of circumstances and challenges that you may not be up for at the present time. Much of it would also depend on the political climate of the country and whether is it conducive to travel there at the present time.

Good morning Gabe, I highly recommend the Charles Schwab debit card. With my Capitol One Venture credit card which I get 2 miles / points for every dollar I charge and of course I charge everything at home and during my travels. I’ll be flying from Istanbul to Mexico City in a few weeks in business class via Turkish Airlines using my points. If I were to pay it would cost $4,100 US dollars. Safe travels and keep the awesome videos coming…
Question: Can you do a travel bag video? Showing what you pack for long trips ? Is it carry on or do you check in bags for long flights ? Also, Banks with no fees are a no brainer - im surprised they even exist! They are great. Cheers
Hey, I really enjoy watching your videos. Probably mainly because I like the how you arrive and walk around. It's like I'm there. Really cool. I do think accepting $30 in fees as just "a drop in the bucket" or whatever is kind of crazy. Get the Schwab. Sure you won't be able to talk about looking for ATMs and worrying about fees. That small bit of content will be over. But I'll take the $30 any day. And that's just the ATM fees. The foreign transaction fees can be ridiculous. I recognize, based upon what you've said, that this isn't a concern for you. Hell, I think this comment is for others who travel who may read the comments. I'd hate for anyone to not take the lowest hanging fruit available (Schwab) that actually puts the money back in your pocket for the things that matter most: travel.
Hi Gabe, this is a question ( you may have already answered). If not the ATM for exchanging money, where are the best places? The airport? I feel you have been travelling for so many years , your experience should be respected, not questioned 😮 Cheers. Keep on keeping on 😊
You can't exchange money at an ATM, just withdraw it. If you have currency that you want to change into another currency then there are various ways to do it. Usually the airport is one of the worst places to change money because they will give you a bad rate. There's no definitive answer, it depends on various factors but basically you want to know what the current fair rate is (check xe.com) and then find somewhere that offers the best rate compared to that. Oftentimes banks offer a good rate, but it can take time waiting in line. In any touristy area there will likely be currency exchange desks, so you can check the rates and find the one with the best rate. But ultimately I find that the best way to get local currency is to withdraw from your checking account using an ATM. You will get the local currency and then your bank will do the currency conversion on their end and it should be a fair rate.
When you talked about credits cards and bonus points for flights i remebered something about the benefits of business credit card for travellers. Most of them offers a point system for every dollar you spend on this card. And these card points can be transfered to flight points. So with your normal payings with this cards you can collect points for a flights not only on flights with certain airlines. Maybe usefull for one of these long intercontinantal flight and you can book a higher class. I remember a few videos were you where very tired and jet laged after a night on an economy seat. And these cards give you free access to lounges at the most airports so you can eat and drink for free. What are the normal prices for a beer and a sandwich in an airport? 15$? There is one big contra: The fee for one card is something up to 800$ a year. On the othterhand you can save twice that money when you use the benefits wisely. My clue for an more relaxed gabriel after a long flight: First eat for free at a lounge and chill on comfortable chair and then sleep on a business class seat with a bed.😁

Maybe you are missing out with sponsorships. You are a travel channel. My brother had a friend with one of the hotel chains and we got employee discounts on a recent trip thru Europe.
The fact that you have been able to travel globally for several decades on a consistant basis and deliver great content is all that matters. I also never like to make concrete plans when travelling by booking in advance. A few days prep max is far smarter than trying to map everything out. I think the people who dont understand this are those that are only used to planning a week or Two away.. Anyone who has travelled extensively for months at a time knows that flexibility is the most important thing - Thanks for all the great content Gabe!
You mentioned capital one credit card. I hope its the one with best travel benefits. There is higher annual fees for them, but its beneficial since you travel a lot. I also don't like to keep track of miles/points, but keeping cards with best travel benefits like chase reserve or capital one x is worth it. You get enough credit back mostly to cover fees and extra points on travel. Other than that someone suggested three airline membership for travel points. And a debit card from a bank that won't charge fees. I think schwab sounds good.
@GabrielTravelerVideos there is venture one and venture x. Venture x is the best. It has like 350ish fees, but you get 300 credit on travel annually other benefits that will cover the cost. You get access to lounges. The travel points are like 5x so adds up quickly. Sorry to go on..just want you to get the max benefits with less hassle. ..
There are three major airline alliances, OneWorld lead by British Airways and American Airlines, Star Alliance led by Lufthansa and United finally Sky Team led by Delta, Air France and KLM. I don't chase miles. If it's free I sign up for all of them and the miles earned can generally be used within the group of these three big alliances and their partner airlines. In your case you might be able to combine your Capital One and if you've accrued points on these three big airlines you might be able to combine them towards flights.
Converting USD 💲 in local currency is always better. We need to first convert our money in USD then USD to other countries, but for a US citizen it's even better situation.

Suggestion and not criticism, if you hold multiple accounts with various banks. Make sure you do a few transactions on each or else the banks will lock them down due to no activity. It would suck if you're abroad and then have to call and wait on hold only to be told you'll need to visit a branch. Most American and Canadian banks have moved their call center to Phillipines, Mexico, many are moving out of India as it's getting costly. Keep on keeping on! I hear Canadians banks are extremely difficult to deal with when it comes to such issues.
@@EvaOwenfrom current experience. I am currently traveling and I've been locked out by my banks app.. I have to access my account via their website and that also raises another issue. I can go via VPN but again it's a hassel.
Hey Gabriel ... I'm curious as to how you keep your flight costs low as it appears you book one way flights, which are much more expensive than return flights.
That's basically old news about one way flights being more expensive than round trip. It depends a lot on various factors, but the main key is just to be flexible with your dates and destinations, in which case you can usually find a good deal one way and last minute. For example my flight from Istanbul to Cappadocia was only $109 including taxes and luggage, even though I booked it just a few days in advance. I use skyscanner to check multiple destinations and check prices for a whole month to see the best deals, then I book it on expedia if possible because I have an account.
I’ll hammer you on the Schwab account again: $30-$50 per month is a hotel night somewhere. Or a few meals. You’re not wasting time ATM hopping for fees. It gives you a buffer against your main account for fraud. Just move money for the month to Schwab. In the time it took you to edit the Schwab explanation segment you could have the account opened already. “Having another account” doesn’t complicate your life *that* much more versus keeping $360 to $600 per year of your own money.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos I am not just singling out the Schwab thing here to "troll" or whatever. I hate waste in all forms and wasting money is one of the worst. Food, gas, etc all bad to waste. Bank fees are a big waste so it irks me to see you pay $5 for literally nothing to Wells Fargo. Especially when the solution is so simple and quick.
In Bulgaria i haven't been charged for withdrawals from any bank so far. Not sure what's going on and how they get away with this kind of extortion in Greece, turkey and elsewhere.
I believe that it's possible for me to enter every country with a US passport. However there are countries that the US bans American citizens from going to, such as Cuba and North Korea. But there are loopholes for Cuba that make it possible to go there legally. As for North Korea, you might still be able to go with a US passport, but then could have problems when you return to the US. And of course you need a visa for many countries, some of which are very hard to get.
Gabriel at 4:41 that one seems to be a Greek christian orthodox church, maybe (deliberately?) plastered! Cappadocia is full of Greek christian orthodox churches because Greeks used to live in that area for thousands of years. The town of Goreme i.e. was called Korema in the Greek-Byzantine era, before the Ottoman Turks invaded it and occupied it..
I must have descended from them, my closest match is to Anatolian Greeks but I'm Turkish. Ironically, your last name comes from Turkish- gazi meaning Muslim warrior in Turkish!
I don’t understand the point of your video, why wouldn’t you just send it to Cafe table or inside of a tent or hotel room to do your video instead? You’re walking along doing a selfie video on trail. Stop, sit down consider your viewers they would rather you just look at the camera and get your talking done. If this is part two, where is part one? And if this is part two, why didn’t you put part two in the title.? It’s very misleading. After three minutes. Clicking off nothing here to grab my attention. The title of your video is not expressed at all in the first three minutes of the video instead you’re talking about ATM fees or ATM scams. Are you a tourist or are you a traveler? It’s mostly the tourist that use ATM machines to frequently, pulling out small amounts of money on a frequent basis instead of once a week. You were surprised that extra fees? You were surprised that you don’t get the same rate as the bank from an ATM machine? How about just going into the bank during the banking hours even if they have limited hours for non-customers, you will always get a best rate at the teller not at the ATM. You need to talk to your American bank or wherever you actually used to base from and have them, make it very clear to you what you should be paying as far as fees, if any at affiliated banks were wide. If they have no affiliates, then you have to either travel with travelers checks, or except the fact that you have to pay fees. Anyway, sorry, but there are so many people doing TH-cam videos about travelthat you need to catch the new viewer within the first few minutes to grab their attention or they’re probably going to move onward.
Hi there, sounds like you're new here. I'll answer a few of your questions. 1. It's filmed outside because I think it's more interesting for people to see landscapes and ancient caves than the inside of a hotel room. 2. At the very beginning of the video there's text on the screen that states that it's Part 2 and you can see Part 1 by clicking the link below (in the description) or at the very end of the video. 3. Not sure why you're referring to pulling "small amounts of money" out of ATMs, because you can withdraw large amounts of money. It depends on the ATM but here in Turkey most of the machines allow you to withdraw up to 5,000 lira, which is currently $146 USD. At many ATMs you can withdraw larger amounts. Why would you go into a bank, stand in line and try to withdraw money with a teller? I'm not even sure if that's possible somewhere like Turkey, but either way, using an ATM is quick and your bank will give you the latest exchange rate, as long as you make sure to decline the conversion offered by the ATM, which will be a much worse rate. As for fees, not at all surprised that there are fess, but the fees in Turkey are especially high compared to other countries. 4. Traveler's checks? I haven't used them in 25 years and can't think of any reason to start using them now. Yes, I accept that there are withdrawal fees. But as I said, one way to get around them is to get a Charles Schwab checking account. They don't charge for international withdrawals and will refund fees charged by the ATM. Safe travels. ✌️

I remember the Baku bus ticket video.
"Kara and Nate" (another travel youtube channel) have some great videos on how best to rack up and use points. They get a lot of free flights, upgrades, and/or lounge access with points.
I probably pay around half that but yes, it definitely does add up over the months and years so it's absolutely worth going for it.
Maxine, I didn't realize there were 8 months in a year. 😳

Gabe, I would love to see you venture out of your comfort zone of countries more often.

Cheers
Here are some of my travel packing videos: www.youtube.com/@GabrielTravelerVideos/search?query=what%20to%20pack
No.1
I have a question.... If you had to pick 1 Country you had to live in for the rest of your life (besides the U.S.A.) What Country would you pick?

Sounds good to me. ✌️

Gabriel: So are the locals there free to use the empty structures if they want w/o having to own the land?
I'm really not sure about that. There are some caves that are occupied by people now, but I'm not sure how it works.

I have the Capital One Venture card.
Mr Magumba, I think he explained that

Suggestion and not criticism, if you hold multiple accounts with various banks. Make sure you do a few transactions on each or else the banks will lock them down due to no activity. It would suck if you're abroad and then have to call and wait on hold only to be told you'll need to visit a branch. Most American and Canadian banks have moved their call center to Phillipines, Mexico, many are moving out of India as it's getting costly. Keep on keeping on! I hear Canadians banks are extremely difficult to deal with when it comes to such issues.
Many USA banks allow one to do a transaction via their app online to qualify as an activity to make sure an account isn't locked down.

Hey Gabriel ... I'm curious as to how you keep your flight costs low as it appears you book one way flights, which are much more expensive than return flights.
Good question Louie

I agree, it sounds like a good idea.
