Winterising The Rabbits
มุมมอง 39214 วันที่ผ่านมา
This week I am getting the Rabbits ready for winter. Its been a fairly warm autumn so its a bit later than usual. But that's a good thing for them, it means they have had a little more light. It's good for me too because it meant I got to keep working on outside projects for longer. Winterizing The Rabbits

3 Simple Steps to TURN Antique Wine into Brandy
มุมมอง 124หลายเดือนก่อน
We have finally got round to dealing with the antique wine we found when we bought the property. with 280 liters of wine in less than ideal storage conditions and just a touch of mold. we really were not sure what to do with it, one idea was just to pour it away. our you tube buddy Luis from mosaic homestead suggested trying to sell it but sadly that wasn't an option here in Slovakia. in the en...
How To Build A Retaining Block Wall
มุมมอง 3.4Kหลายเดือนก่อน
This is my version of how to build a block retaining wall. Its taken me just a little over six weeks and honestly I should have brought the mini digger back in. If I had it might have taken me a little as three weeks, which I admit sounds like a long time, but then again I am mostly working on my own and this monster is eighteen meters long.

DIY Drainage Solutions Every Homesteader NEEDS to Know!
มุมมอง 3782 หลายเดือนก่อน
This Week I am tackling the drainage from the house and terrace. The old retaining wall collapsed because of the water pressure behind it, and I am determined to make sure that doesn't happen to the new one! as it happens I am using four types of drainage to solve the problem, Slope, gutter, surface and subsurface drainage is all going in.
Can We Save This Crumbling Homestead Barn?

This week we are lifting the barn to build new foundations and a retaining wall. The barn has been slowly slipping down the hill for many years, long before we bought the property. we knew this when we bought the property and are now putting in place our solution, new foundations, a french drain and retaining walls. will we save it before it crumbles? crumbling

Can Your French Lop Rabbit SURVIVE This Deadly Temperature?

This week we are talking rabbits. More specifically the temperature that they can survive. Of course we never want to push the limits to find out, but it is important for us to know them so that we can protect our rabbits when these temperatures are predicted.

Always love to see the Golden Pheasant, very special. We do see an occasional one here in Lincolnshire.

🤩🤩
I think Coal for the rabbit name, because people will think it's Cole 😂
I like that , but I might save it for the next buck
Nesquik for Brown one😊
I'm surprised you didn't go for Nescafé 😂
For the grey one, Blue, keeping colour theme
@@katedijkers7827 she does have a blue tinge to the grey, I like that idea
@@deervalleyhomestead Here in Europe we call the grey colour, blue.
@katedijkers7827 that's good to know. I'm English but live in Slovakia. So quite often I don't know the correct translations of breed names / colour in English.
Could the eye problem be" pink eye" a bacterial infection . Our cattle sometimes get it . We use a powder .
I thought it might be at the beginning. I'm still not sure what it was. It's was the speed of what happened to her that threw me off. It went from a small red patch at the front of the eye to golf ball sized in 30hours. I gave her antibiotics and an antibacterial eye cream. Thankfully she has made a really good recovery
That's the best non electric water freeze prevention, I'll recommend this video to anyone with this problem in the states, I don't have that problem here, it's hot here right now 😂
Thank you Luis , I'm trying to find any excuse to get the welder out. I have a big project coming up next year but need to improve my welds first
@deervalleyhomestead the right sizzle sound says you're welding right, we both could improve our welding, I still consider myself a novice.
@@MosaicHomestead I'm working on it, maybe I should copy your new raised bed
@deervalleyhomestead I'm not building anymore unless I get a successful test, what I like is the small amount of compost they use, I got seeds germinating right now, I'm up to my second round, bought old seeds, but I got some seeds sprouting now, the fence to block out the chickens is done, tomorrow I'm building a small piece of fence for the block wall.
Great jon :) !
Thank you
Perfect job done there. Only one thing I would have done differently. You have filled all bricks with concrete. Why use mortar to join the bricks. I would have just pack them and fill after packing the blocks
I wish I knew that six weeks ago 😂.
I work with concrete, and lay blocks, you have to see how people lay blocks here, blocks are literally fill here. Your job looks perfect compared to some masons here 😂, its because everything gets stucco, blocks are not seen, everything gets level with a rebar dummy on top, super strong...great job, and i dont say this often when it comes to masonry.
Thank you Luis , kind words.
Great project, you never know what you find in those lovely old buildings, I hope the old stone will be used somewhere!! Bon courage.
I'm open to ideas , for now it's stored in a huge pile
τελειο μπραβο σου! δεν κατάλαβα που πηγαίνουν οι ακαθαρσίες του επάνω οροφου... τα ζωα του επανω οροφου λερωνουν τα ζωα του κατω οροφου....?
It just falls through, I was worried about that when I built it. But I've never seen a rabbit with a wet head 🤷
They look like some sort of lop. Do you have a particular reason for keeping that breed. I used to keep californians, which could become aggressive .
You are right they are a french lop. No real reason to be honest. I was given the first one for my birthday a few years ago. And it just kinda snowballed from there
What do you feed the rabbits with?
They get a mix. Generally pellets in the morning and hay all day (refreshed in the evening) in the summer they all get fresh grass or time on grass as well.
Mann humanity at its finest
Moving the tractor didn't look that easy, I want one to brood pullets and chicks, it's my next project, and I'm going to mention you to see if you get some extra views or subscribers, I'm small too, but we do what we can.
I just make it look hard 😂. My garden is too rough. Will you go for a metal one ? I know you're pretty handy with the welder
@deervalleyhomestead it's metal all the way, but I'm adding wheels,...I'm not getting younger lol
Create a wagon enclosure, where there is a central hub, and this is where the rabbit hutch is located and you feed them, then you have gates that lead to about 8 different areas, and you open one gate up each day. This way the rabbits have access to a new area every day, and each area gets a weeks rest before grazing again. We do this with a number of grazing animals, pigs, sheep, goats, it works well. You want them to have enough space so that they can't eat all the vegetation in a day, this allows the grasses to grow back in that week.
Do you mean a wagon that they live in, or eight paddocks in the shape of a waggon wheel ? Or both 😂. I like the idea either way. I'm definitely going to work on something for next season
Ohhh! my ears! Lubricant exists dude. It exists!
Such a cool story. I would let this area rest and grow back stronger with all the poop fertilizer in it. Then after it’s thick again you can put rabbits in there as a treat or to “finish” them ? Just some thoughts man. Good luck’
Thanks, I will consider it
A flatter head with tire tracks 😂
It disappeared off it to the undergrowth , so hopefully it was unhurt
Add an elevated gate that automatically closes with a spring behind you so they don't constantly get out!
Thanks , if I go for a permanent colony I will do that
Don't your rabbits dig ??
Not really , I was pretty surprised when I built the first rabbit tractor. I figured I would add a base later, but just never needed to. As long as they are moved daily they don't even try. As for the colony it has wire under the outside edge, but again they haven't even tried so far
What about a rabbit run a long the fence and come off in to the rabbit tractor or in to a pen for the day
I tried day pens but they still got destroyed too quickly. I need a fenced field 🤣
That's it, you convinced me, I'm building a chicken tractor. 😊.
Two days was all it took , I love the idea of having them in a great big paddock on grass but it's just not realistic
@deervalleyhomestead Agreed, Chicken tractor is better, fresh grass = less feed.
Awesome job 🤗
Thank you 👍
God how I appreciate people like you. I like living in the city, but I often fantasize about living somewhere in harmony with nature, with a house I built on my own, growing my own food, owning chickens and pigs and cows and dogs and cats... It's a very comforting fantasy, but not achievable for me (at least for now), plus it's very difficult for someone who's not used to it at all. So when I watch videos like this, it fills me with a lot of joy, knowing that there are people in this world who live like you, doing hard and honest work daily. This is the most amazing thing ever, you're the coolest person to me. Also tell your chickens I said hi
Thank you , that's a lot of very kind things to say. No pigs or cows yet but we are looking at a few lambs for next year 😃
@@deervalleyhomesteadThat's great! 👍
That was a lot of work for something temporary, I stay away from temporary structures, but good job anyways 👏
It took six hours. I would prefer to build the new barn now, but I don't think it will be done before this one collapses
@deervalleyhomestead That old barn was in bad shape, you probably did the right thing.
Good job
Thanks
Brilliant idea, very cost effective. Well thought put.
Thank you!
This looks really good with everything they need. Wish my husband was as handy as you are! Nice to see how the rabbits immediately explore their new space. Hope it doesn't get muddy too quickly.
It's already grassless 😓 took them about two days. I wonder how big an area they would need to keep it nicely grassy. I will show how it looks in my video this Saturday
Bro the best way to control the pop is with a nice pot stew with wine, or a roast, and the best is a good stew then pass through egg wash, bread crumbs and deep fried... Just an idea...
I'm a slow cook with carrots and potatoes kinda guy 😋
Is there any difference between a rabbit tractor and a chicken tractor, they look the same to me. I want to build one that can work with both rabbits and chickens.
Most people put mesh on the bottom, To stop the rabbits digging out. I have a few escape every now and then, but have never lost one.
😂😂😂are you ok 😳🧐🧐 22 x 0,56 =12,32 And this is very low for red vine 🫵🏽🫵🏽🫵🏽🫵🏽this vine will be body less and not rich And you add some water 💦 🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐
What's the 0.56? I am ok I'm glad to report, wine tastes good too. I did say in the video it's my first attempt and I am definitely no expert 😇
@@deervalleyhomestead 0,56 is important 🫵🏽 When red / white grape juice is 22 sugar level (on 20 gradus of celsius ) it means that final alcohol level will be 12.3 (approximately) 22 x 0.56 =12,32 🫵🏽 your grape juice level must multiply on 0.56 And result will be potential alcohol in wine And in this video 22 sugar for red vine is very very low 🥹😳 12.3 alcohol is ok if your grape is PINOT NOIRE 👌🏻👌🏻
You're a brave man, I would have just taken everything down and built new, the construction there doesn't look good enough to renovate.
You're probably right. I figure if we do replace it I can still use the new foundations. It's also just not in the budget to replace it at the moment, and in places hand sawn oak beams. The plan is hopefully to stabilise it and try to get another five or ten years out of it 🤞
@@deervalleyhomestead do you have access to construction Jack's, that would help a lot.
When transferring to another container, you typically want your destination vessel to be lower than your original vessel. That way gravity helps the siphon transfer the liquid from higher elevation to lower elevation. Hope this helps. Great video!
Thanks @larkins5. I was hoping to Syphon half this way and then move the barrel as it was so heavy. But the fermentation was so strong it kept creating an airlock. Thanks for the tips 😁
@@deervalleyhomestead that makes sense. It happens sometimes. Thanks again for the video! Great content!
@@larkins5 thank you
Please make a full video on the fruit press. Really enjoying your content.
Thanks Blair , I'm going to check the footage and work on it 😁
The temperatures here have been ridiculous, haven't built my cages yet because i go to prepper mode during hurricane season, but im glad i watched this video to take heat under consideration during my build.
I will happily tell you everything I got wrong 🤣. I love my set up but having run it for a year I also see all the mistakes. I was in sxm for for a hurricane, and I fully understand why you prepare properly. I saw the looting , lawlessness, and bad side of life and how quickly it can get there.
@@deervalleyhomestead those were actually isolated incidents, the media loves isolated incidents for ratings lol, I never experienced any craziness where I live, but I'm always ready to deal with any problem that arises. I first have to build a young chicken tractor to keep chickens once out of the brooder, I've been keeping chickens in my compost bins. The rabbit hutches will be on top of compost bins to collect poop 💩 for fertilizer.
Cherry tomatoes are my favorites
You ain't in the usa are you
Which part was the most obvious?
Where are you from
Slovakia
Ha ha I love the natural approach and letting the animals be themselves... a quail who thinks it's a chicken and ducks that won't swim! Why not!!
I have absolutely zero knowledge of concrete do's and don'ts so it all looked good to me!!!! 😂
It’s nice, but wouldn’t call it the best. Definitely not best in world.
Your handle matches your comment. I quite agree with you, lots of things I would change. Hopefully in the top 50%
@@deervalleyhomestead well for me the first problem is the law, in my country we are not allowed to breed rabbits in such small cages. They set a certain amount of space u need for each rabbit. And since European rabbits love to live in colonies, it needs to be big. Funny thing if u keep rabbit as pet u can keep it in a hamster cage if u would want to. Laws only seem to apply when u wanna save money on food. But that doesn’t change the fact its a nice build. Just not the best, since it’s not functional everywhere.
@@harshtruth632 where are you from ? I'm debating trying a colony setup just out of curiosity. It's 1.2*0.8m per cage, they do all get time on grass as well.
@@deervalleyhomestead Belgium, i think u would need the size of 2 cage per female. And size of 3 cages for each buck here. Most people i know who raise them here, do it in old sheds (made of bricks) and they build a huge cage on the outside of it. Unfortunately I don’t live in one of those old houses that had those.
Im going to use the dolly idea, (when you moved it) that looks handy. 😊
It was a little tippy but it worked. Sometimes you just have to find a way
Im by No means an ekspert, but isn’t it to small?
They are 1.2m x 0.8m. that's about 4ft x 3ft in freedom units. It's much bigger than the standard size here in Slovakia. What's the standard size where you are ?
@@deervalleyhomestead all i hear is bunnies dosnt belong in a cage, our bunny run free in our House like a dog
these bunnies are given time on the grass , normally twice a week. But they are also not pets, while lots are sold in to the pet market locally, around half end up in the freezer.
I am trying to see what country you live in? Where are you living?
Slovakia , sorry I must have forgotten to tag it on this video
@@deervalleyhomestead Nice, I was thinking South Africa Australia, could not work it out. Thank you.
I do lazy composting as well, but I don't produce as much as you.
It's the grass clippings that really fill it up

Loved your struggle with the round bale. Very relatable 😄
They seem to get heavier every year 😂. I love a good history channel.
Its been super hot here as well, ive been working non stop as well for hurricane season, the moving the hey was entertaining 😂, the having to change the wire in the cages must have sucked , I sold my rabbits 🐇 to a breeder, I told him i would buy rabbits from him once my cages are ready, but hurricane season came before the cages, its looking like a next year project, but seeing the problem you had with the wire, im going to use decorative sheet metal, im sure it will be better for their feet.
I love the wire , they keep it so clean. I just used the wrong stuff, I fell for the picture of a rabbit on the packaging 😞. I will keep an eye out for the metal sheeting video
