Please help! I revised a script with the permission of the original writer but revamped the whole thing including improving the concept to a selling concept and providing the main hook. The original script was also very simplistic but inspired me to write my draft. I want to include the original writer but using "and" would be problematic. If he comes before me, it'd be he wrote the current draft.
In this case, you'd do: STORY BY original writer SCREENPLAY BY You Is a Star Generally, it is WRITTEN BY, but that's when one writer creates the story and writes the script. Hopefully this helps.
I like your content but that clip you used from The Whale was gratuitous. That is a gut-wrenching scene, too real, too sad to be used in this context.
Thanks

Really explained well. Thank you! I don’t think anyone else could have explained it any better.
The want is to ruin the films....so teach formula.
As someone who's been in "the business" for 40 years, I always advise writers that a vehicle can be an interior -- but never an exterior. A vehicle necessarily exists within a larger space. For example, a car can be moving on a highway, parked on a street, in a parking garage, in a parking lot, etc., but it's SOMEWHERE. That "somewhere" is the location where the scene takes place. be it an exterior (e.g. PARKING LOT) or an interior (e..g, GARAGE). likewise, an airplane must be either in the sky (flying), or sitting on a tarmac, in a hangar, etc.
Thank you for this! I’m stuck on a script, I need to do something else…
Yes. So important ❤❤❤❤
Would the 9 points be the same for a screenplay with two protagonists or must something be changed?
Multiple protagonists... the 9 points would be the same for BOTH protagonists... so you'd need 18 points. BUT... there should be overlap between many of them outside of the 2nd act. You'll probably end up with 13-16 unique points. So that's how you do it. The better question is Why do it? It muddies the story. There are only a handful of produced films with multiple protagonists that are actually good. It's harder to stand out as a new writer. And multiple protagonist stories are better suited for novels because you have the space and time to give so the story is satisfying. So be sure this is how you want to invest your time.
@ thank you for your help. Much appreciated.
Question, Sir: Is the outline required before the treatment. I do the opposite and it works for me; however, as you're not standing in line for tickets to my films means I certainly don't have the answers...
You don't HAVE to do either. But most writers do plan a story in some way. Whether that means writing a treatment, an outline, or both is up to individual writers and on the story being told. I've done outline first then treatment. Treatment then outline. It doesn't matter. Do what works for you. The main reason you have to know how to write a treatment, though, is if you get hired to write a film, it's often included as a deliverable and you have to generate one and you get paid for that work. So it's an important skill to learn how to do even if you don't use it for every script you work on.
@BigRedStripe Thank you
#3 Over describing- My first script started with a military plane crash. I described the scene with six HUGELY verbose sentences: 41 words describing the scene, 55 words in the blow-by-blow. Apparently, using 20 words when you can use 100 is a crime in my family lol
I know he's emphasizing style over realism, but "Did you know Jenkins approved a two million dollar purchase order?" actually is a realistic start to a conversation. When there's big news, or a big problem, people often dispense with the small talk and go straight to the subject at hand.
Thank you! Great explanation and clear. Inspired me
Thank you for explaining the ending of Dune, I finally get why I felt like that now

Some great points but If the script is bad ass most of this won't matter.
Thank you for this, I had no idea I needed this
This content was great. I'm ready to move forward with my script and you helped me decide. Thank you!
Very heartening advice: stick to it and learn how.
This method is the one that came naturally to me. Story then characters

Thank you- Very very much.. Yes- The Whale. It blew me away. What a film.
I love your channel but I somewhat disagree here. I’m not saying STC is gospel but the audience has come to expect certain beats in film, usually subconsciously. I agree that it doesn’t have to be on the exact page but it needs to be there. One of the most successful blockbusters of recent memory was the new Top Gun. That movie hits every single STC beat. I think first, write your draft, tell your story. On rewrite, it is beneficial to adjust scenes and beats to land in certain spots. As for what STC literally applies to… he’s trying to convey that there needs to be empathy or some other character trait, could be a flaw, that the audience/reader latch onto. Usually it’s an action the protagonist takes. My overall point is pretty much the same as yours, there are great nuggets one can take away from STC. It puts language to things you’ve maybe only absorbed subconsciously through watching movies. But it’s not the end all be all of screenwriting advice. Great videos! Love the channel!
Hey Good morning Jacob I am writing spec script but the software automatically gives scenes numbers what can I do
This is a setting you can turn off. It depends which software you are using. You may have to hunt to find it, but it's definitely a setting you can turn off.
What are your favorite examples of suspense in a rom-com?
Kinda cool to see him talking about John Wick after lighting wicks throughout the whole video.
Someone noticed!! :-)

There is a really good book about playwriting " A Primer of Playwriting" by Kenneth MacGowan. (1953) Much of it translates to screenwriting as well. Highly recommended.
Pretty much every successful hollywood movie is WORS-- win escape rescue stop. The story is how this particular character keeps trying to solve problem.
The athletes foot analogy is really helpful.
I've been leaving the race out on almost every character. Intro, because I wanted the casting director to simply find the most qualified actor. If your screenplay is going to be picked up by hollywood, then you have to write "any race," where this simply wouldn't be an issue in the theater or Indie films.
1:03 was expecting him talking about his sponsor
Same
Just about everything I watch and read refers to the character changing in some way, but what about "flat arc characters?" How does this apply to them? Look forward to your answer.
This is super rare. Most of the time, characters are faced with a decision, an opportunity to choose to be their better self. At times, characters refuse to change and end up staying the same... and we are sad for them. Villains, however, typically don't change. They may be faced with an opportunity to "do good," but they are too driven and often too egocentric to make that choice. In this sense they are flat. But they still have an opportunity to change, and that's the key. Move a character to where they have a choice. If they refuse? That's on them... but we hope they will change.
Thanks algorithm. Subbed.
