Unboxing: Baltic Aquascaphe Bronze (Brown Dial)

    I really like this watch. The brown fume is really nice and I'm not a fan of fauxtina but it definitely works here. Also I am a fan of the Miyota 9000 series, someone else in the comments mentioned they wished it was a Swiss movement but that would almost certainly be an SW-200 and the Miyota is far superior to the SW-200 in terms of reliability and power reserve and this is coming from someone with multiple SW-200s and 9000s in their collection; I will not buy another SW-200. As for the strap, toss it. I'd put a better rubber strap on for the summer and I bet money this would look great on a brown leather (heretical!) strap in the winter. The only negative I see besides the crown is that white seconds hand. Its out of place. PS excellent review, thanks!

    Everyone is entitled to their opinion(s), and we all purchase watches for different reasons. I personally love microbrands, and enjoy purchasing them. Yes, they may be somewhat derivative, but that statement is just as accurate when discussing the big brands. When I look at microbrands I am much less worried about resale value than I am the potential need for servicing. I stick with brands that use Sellita, ETA, or the Miyota 9 series movements as getting them serviced is easy. I personally think that there are great brands out there doing really fun things with colorways, dial textures, etc. In the sub-1000 range I am very impressed with Zelos and with Wise. Own several of both brands and have been VERY satisfied. The fit and finish of my Wise watches is on par with Longines and Omega, the movements are well regulated, and overall the watches are my favorites to wear.

    I just have no interest in a bronze watch. But if I got one, I don't think I'd want patina because I don't actually want a bronze watch. I do like the look of the Oris Bronze Big Crown Pointer Date.

    • @WatcheswithDennis
      @WatcheswithDennis 9 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, bronze definitely is not for you. I've seen some people who get bronze watches but hate the patina so they constantly strip the patina off. They want a gold watch. So the correct answer is to buy a gold watch. If they don't want to pay that much then buy a gold plated watch. If that's too much then get a PVD watch gold in color. But bronze isn't the answer for those individuals. Oris bronze has tin in it so I don't like how it tends to patina green. I really just want the bronze to darken, basically blacken. That's the style I like so I avoid a lot of the bronze models as they are too aggressive for my tastes.

    One thing Dennis, it would look terrible with a date function. Not that I have anything against Miyota, but for the money, it would be nice if they stretched to something Swiss.

    • @WatcheswithDennis
      @WatcheswithDennis 11 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I think a date window would have been a struggle. Maybe it could work. It's tough with fumé since even if they were planning to color-match it probably wouldn't reflect the transition of color. Maybe if they put it at 4:30 way at the edge (in the black portion) it could be done relatively clean, but I think that works against the vintage vibe anyway. The movement was my biggest hesitation at this price-point. But, I figured since Seiko's got a similar spec rating for things like the 6R35 that I should accept that times have changed.

    It's certainly different, too large of course, but I like the case finish and crystal. The thing that bugs me is watches where the hands never pass over acres of dial, the rectangular extension is completely vacant apart from the name, for the money they could have added a power reserve, small seconds or something in that area, but that would require a new movement and decreased profit margin 🙄

      Nice to here. I recall reading about wobby crowns maybe on Reddit. Congrats Dennis! I can see you indeed were missing that Tudor Bronze! I do like this one, its a very cohesive design. Wear it in good health as they say! PS I'm a huge fan of that movement but you might not be, its a unidirectional winding movement. I have several watches with it and I never notice it but I know you had that Hamilton disaster of a watch so just a heads up. I really like the watch so I hope its not an issue.

    • @WatcheswithDennis
      @WatcheswithDennis 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Oh I already shook the thing. The rotor movement is detectable but not even as extreme as Orient. My biggest issue has been the crown. It was hard to screw down, like it felt done and then still had more to go. Hit the threads with a toothbrush and it seems some debris was in there because it got a lot better. Crown is awfully sharp but that isn't the movement's fault (I did add some watch grease I have to the threads as well but the toothbrush seemed to provide the notable improvement).

    • @Nefville
      @Nefville 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@WatcheswithDennis I had the same issue of a sharp crown on my Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical and I just took the fine side of a nail file and smoothed it out a bit. You would never know to look at it but now its not tearing up the back of my hand. I'm not sure if you want to do that or not but bronze is pretty hard, it should be difficult to overdo it.

    • @WatcheswithDennis
      @WatcheswithDennis 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Nefville oh that is clever! I will see how it is when I am not constantly testing the screw-down aspect as that is what did it. Unscrewing and time-setting were effortless and after brushing the threads I think it may close easy enough that it won't irritate my thumb. But filing should be pretty risk-free since it isn't plated.

      Tudor makes some very nice watches. I can already say the movement and winding experience on my Tudor bronze greatly exceeds this Baltic (I actually struggled to fully screw the crown in; used a toothbrush and it is better so I think there was some contamination on the threads originally but it is sharp and unrefined compared to the Tudor crown which I think is great).

    In the watch space, being Rolex just gets better and better. The watch media is not an area i'd want to work or invest in, when a TH-camr or IG account can create a business that competes with Hodinkee for a fraction of their cost.

      I assume this is part of why they diversified so much. Ad revenue only goes so far. But I think it is very hard when you start selling what you are reviewing. Of course you can argue about segregated roles (like newspapers and their ad divisions) but when you see entities like Hodinkee softballing all the reviews I find it suspect to trust their credibility.

    We kind of touched on the topic of journalistic integrity during the microbrand livestream and from what I can tell all the major watch publications with the exception of ABlogtoWatch are anathema to criticizing watches or watch brands. They absolutely will not do it and I think that's what you can expect when reviewers are handed the product they are supposed to be reviewing from the company that made it. They think if they say something negative the brands will never send them another watch to review. Compounding the issue further for Hodinkee, they have business relationships with the brands they are selling or collaborating with, and even further still, if the criticism is of a watch they themselves are selling, they'll be even more likely to paint an overly rosy picture of it. What you end up with is an 'article' that is nothing more than a fancy description of a watch in Hodinkee's store. IMO Hodinkee's entire model is flawed, they bought C&C VERY high but somehow those are not mistakes. Seems Ben Clymer is anathema to criticism of himself as well.

      I mean I avoided touching on the ego of making his own G-Shock collab around his name like he is a rock star (but I stuck that Easter Egg in the thumbnail). I mean he must feel like one he made millions off Hodinkee. I think he thinks he did it once he can do it again (and he has upped his involvement recently) but I think he will find repairing a brand is harder than starting one.

    The writing, so to speak, was on the wall before the C&C acquisition when virtually all their reputable and wonderful writers left, as you rightly pointed out

      It is when I started only using them as an occasional source for news. But maybe they could wash the wall clean and start fresh. But I think they are going to try and find a new way to make selling watches work.

    Aah……………………..losing trust and credibility in the watch community plus having an inventory of devalued watches-Hodinkee is dead 💀! They lost me with the $6000 travel clock.

      It seems the infamous travel clock ranks up there with Seiko misaligned bezels for damage to a brand's reputation!

      Corrections always welcome! Moser is a bit odd because it was defunct and then revived (I think in 2005) and then the current approach I think started with investor bailout in 2012. So there isn't a steady through-line for the brand dating back to its original creation.

    Can you give your thoughts on Christopher Ward? I am a fan of the Trident Pro 300 and I own the black dial 42mm

      I haven't owned any CW watches as they have not appealed to me. I have heard very good things about the watch quality (cannot think of a model I have heard issues with) but have heard complaints related to their customer service (but nothing to the level of Yema).

    Sorry I missed the livestream, I lost track of time admiring my BB58 movement. In this phase of my watch journey, I have little to no interest in micro brands. It seems that these appeal to those who like homages at a lower price than an original or if you have everything and you like to check out some oddities.

      Haha, enjoy the in-houseness! A lot are the homage approaches and the near-on clones do not appeal to me. Similar takes with their own twist I am fine with but ideally only if their twist is superior. There are a lot of acceptable designs but I think I lean to them with the more fun takes (bronze, colorful dials that I would only wear on occasion, etc.). Otherwise might as well save for a Tudor or similar for something to wear regularly. But of course that does cost more and some will not be comfortable with that.
