This is my review of the SRPK17 from Seiko, their Seiko 5 Sports 55th Anniversary Limited Edition model. CORRECTION: In the intro I said the SPRK17 is a recreation of the first Seiko 5 model from 1968. This isn't correct. Seiko in 1968 launched the first Seiko 5 *Sports* model, which this is celebrating. However, in 1963 Seiko launched the *Sportsmatic* 5 so the Seiko 5 line started even earlie...

Would have probably preferred this in their diver configuration
I have to say I am a fan of the Tudor Black Bay Chrono “Pink”
Lovely
Interesting show, sorry I couldn't make it. The only watch I appreciated was the Daniel Roth, but I'm not keen on the large writing on the dial. It seems like they are using the owner's wrist for advertising. The Chopards were beautifully made, but just too busy. I can't get over the Nomos lugs and I'm with you on the dial and who'd really want to wear a huge pink plastic watch?
Like the original sand dune dial better than this updated one.
That Daniel Roth is a stunner. But it would be hard to part w/45K for it. Lot of options for that amount if money. Great stream as always!
Oh yes, would be a used piece for me. Depending. 20 is quite limited it may not fall in value. I am curious what the mainline version will look like. I think we will know later this year.
Good stream Dennis! I’m OK with non-ethical Gold 😎
That gold may be guilty of war crimes!
Love big dates. Especially when you’re 77😉
Oh yes, convenience of a cyclops without having one stuck on a crystal.
Great collection Dennis! FYI I saw a video the other day that mentioned rumors of a VC 1921 coming in steel (like they did with the 222). Could be a fit for you
Oh I hadn't heard about that, very interesting!
@@WatcheswithDennis someone mentioned it in a recent Britt Pierce vid, don’t know how creditable that source is but something to keep an eye on I guess. Would be awesome if VC dabbled in more steel and “obtainable” models, in this market could be a good strategy. Good luck in 2025!
The last generation of the Breguet Marine, the 5817ST in particular is my favourite version of this out of favour Watch. Not only because of the beautiful silver guilloche dial but particularly because of the subtle big date at 6 o’clock. These can be had on the secondary market for good prices now and if I could afford one I’d love to own one. Great video Dennis 👍 Look forward to your livestream on Saturday!
I was sorely tempted by those Marine watches. I went Classique instead mainly because I wear dress watches more but it was close.
can i know reference number?
Certainly, this is the 101.032.
@ oh really thanks. ^^ happy new year!
@@WatcheswithDennis i like your youtube contents. very well made and impressive. excellent music selection.. thanks you dennis really . subscribe and like button b.
Not for me I’m afraid. Was hoping to see a twelve 38mm but I suspect that will come later in the year
These look really nice. A few companies have been copying Omegas ‘Wave’ dial of late. TAG with their Aquaracer, Seiko and now CW. The ‘Wave trend’ is here! 😂
I do like waves. Seamaster dial I find quite attractive.
I'm down to a 3 watch collection more or less. The Orient Kamusu 2 with the black fume dial pretty much stopped me in my tracks for now.
I've always loved the Polerouter, it's been my favorite vintage piece ever. Never owned one, bc the build quality is bad. So, I'm really looking forward to future models with a much better build quality
Mido Baroncelli Big Date sub $400 on Ashford.
Love the look, but 38mm is to small for me. I prefer 41/42 mm.
I like the size but I just don't tend to wear field watches very much.
Good thing I'm not a gold watch person and I'm thankful this steel 222 is released. Just tried it at the boutique yesterday and size wise, it wears similar to Royal Oak Jumbo.
Great, thanks for sharing your experience with it!
I have a Jacques Lemans- a brand few have probably heard of. Has a Swiss Ronda quartz movement with a big date at 6 and retrograde day at 12. Nice sun ray black dial
I own the Tudor Glamour Big Date and really like it❤❤❤❤ affordable classy and could be an everyday work watch on the bracelet
There was a version of the Union Glashütte Noramis line with a GO style big date. But not anymore.
I think I have seen that one! Online. UG I don't think has any dealers in the U.S. but I used to look at them in Chrono24.
Solid choices. I particularly love GO’s execution of this complication. I would add some older Ulysse Nardin models, like the Classico Ludwig perpetual I recently purchased, which was released in 2017. These can be had at amazing prices on the secondary market.
UG was a runner-up but the current models have some design elements I don't care for. Breguet's prior gen Big Date Marine is another favorite of mine. Pity they changed from it.
Take a look at the date on the VC Overseas chronograph gen 2 vs. gen 3. An example of VC going backwards. I’m also a fan of the Blancpain Leman grande date. P.S. I’m from Minnesota and the Vikings curse continues!
For affordable options, watches using various Ronda quartz movements. The 8040n is one of my favorite
I will have to look into those, I wondered what quartz had in the space but didn't know any examples first-hand.
@WatcheswithDennis there are a few Ronda models. Off the top of my head, the 5050c, 8040n and 2 or 3 more. I just posted a Short of a Glycine Combat Sub Chrono with one
The problem is for all these watch brands is that they have one or two models to trade above retail and then everything else trades below. Except for Rolex, who almost all their steel watches trade for a premium., with lots of their precious metal or gold/steel watches can be bought under even a bit retail. So if you’re an authorized dealer, and you’re trying to get people to buy your watches because you genuinely want them to have a collection, but also have a carrot dangling of one of these very hard to get models, the trade way above retail, The Delta has to be so big on the model to trade above versus the model below otherwise people just buy the models that they want that aren’t those above retail pieces, save money or by the one model they want above retail and don’t play the game and buy a bunch of stuff they’re not interested in.
Nice shirt 👍
Soon we shall see if another will be added to my collection.
You can’t get any better than Vostok at that price range. A lot of people don’t know watches! 😉
At least you admit that you're into boring watches. I don't think I've ever seen you get excited about anything fun or colorful. I hold out hope, but have tempered my expectations. I think wearing a "The Citizen" in white/silver tells us what we need to know about what to expect here.
Haha, this is quite fair. I would say in terms of color my most recent likes are the yellow Tsyosa (speaking of Citizen) and the saffron Aqua Terra, but since I haven't bought either of them my reaction is arguably quite tempered.
The design language ("vibe") is actually pretty cool here. Think of the various sub categories of the "sport"-style watch . . . this is a fairly rare one. If the sport watch category breaks down into field/explorer, diver, motoring (carrerra), aviation/flieger . . . you might ask, "what's left?" How about the most traditional, conservative, long-standing category of all- the navy/maritime "ship's clock" inspired watch. Evidenced by the circular rr track around the dial perimeter and the Arabic numerals. Look at the Stowa Marine Classic or the Laco Cuxhaven, which costs either 5x or 3x what this Timex Marlin goes for. Hamilton also has a design or two, but double the price. The Marlin was part of the Timex line many years back . . . obviously a tie-in to deep sea fishing . . . you know who was a really well-known big Marlin fisherman? Ernest Hemingway who ran around in his 38 ft boat, the Pilar. (Guarantee you he would have had a Marine chronometer/deck clock aboard). So the 24 hour sub-dial, perhaps a nod to tidal tables or ideal fishing times . . . maybe a stretch to explain it that way, but in that light, the dial makes sense. So, yeah, I'll take an affordable automatic with a Citizen-owned (Miyota) movement that evokes the little seen "sport-maritime watch" (which can dress up a lot easier than about 75% of the other watches I referenced above). Props to Timex for thinking outside the box.
Great video but wow each one minute and adds popped up. Really irritating
Strange, I thought TH-cam was supposed to prevent that. They automatically add the ad breaks but given your comment I've gone in and reduced the count manually so hopefully it doesn't disrupt future viewers as much.
@@WatcheswithDennisThanks man. I guess TH-cam is getting crazier currently with pushing ads. But love your review nonetheless
Beauty!
I LIKE IT
The overall spec is quite underwhelming for a high end watch like this. 50m depth, 40hrs reserve, all stainless, no seconds hand. I’m not convinced. It’s also thinner than it needs to be so I don’t know why they couldn’t increase the spec.
This is a stunning piece of kit😍😍😍👍🙏
Does it make sense to buy a blue 222 if you have a blue overseas?
To me it wouldn't. Different shades of blue and cases have key differences so I could see some feeling they are distinct enough. But to me it is too close to want both versions.
It depends on what you like about the overseas. Personally, I'm not a fan of the Overseas but I love the 222.
If you don't mind the movement new king seiko cherry red look quite appetizing
I do really like that model, and I would be fine with the movement but not at their MSRP. Perhaps I will check the used market and see how it is there.
Doesn't work in steel imo
The new 222 gold version is the real deal. This is the 222 to buy and have for forever. The steel version is like 718 to 911.
The gold looks so good. My favorite all gold watch. Only thing that isn't my favorite is the price, but used they have started to come down finally.
My initial thought is I like the look more of the gold 222, but I think I would wear the steel 222 more often. The hypo question for me is if given the option to buy the 222 steel or the Overseas blue dial, which would I buy. Hard call. The Overseas is less expensive and comes with the quick-exchange 3 strap options. The 222 steel is better looking (except for the color of blue dial, can't beat the Overseas blue imo) and much slimmer. I would be interested to feel the 222 bracelet for the deciding factor. Both watches are amazing and I wish VC boutique would call me for my Overseas. I've been on that list since May 2024!
For me since I have the PF Tonda in steel, and really like how it wears (not to mention it's another watch without a seconds hand), I feel I have the steel integrated box checked and so the gold remains more compelling given I also like its look more also.
This is a grail for me but it's unlikely I'd ever be able to get one even if I could rationalize spending that much.
I like the design overall on these a lot. Yet to try one on though (last time I was at a VC boutique they didn't have any 222s to try).
I bought it. Very nice but I switched to a brown leather strap. Very nice watch.
Interesting, I really like the gold 222 though I wouldn't want to wear one myself (I won an all gold plated bracelet watch, and it looked terrible on me!), but somehow I find this stainless version much less appealing 🤔. It may be the rather uninspiring dial colour, I should like the watch, but I don't. It's academic though, because I couldn't ever justify that much on a watch.
It would be interesting to know how these brands decide about pricing - for example Rolex will sell you a Sub for $10,400 …. oh you wanted that in gold, that will be $43,500. So 4x the price, while some other brands seems to be closer to 2x gold vs. price on all steel models.
It is curious. In this case if I were to guess (which I will!), pricing on this steel 222 may have been driven by looking at what the Patek 5711 sold for (which I think was around $35,000 retail before discontinuation) and what AP does on Royal Oaks of similar complication. I was always annoyed the gold 222 was so much more than a Rolex Day-Date (basically 2x as much) for a very similar size. Granted, the VC is going to be far better finished and their steel stuff tends to run about 2x more than Rolex so I suppose they were consistent. But it definitely wasn't the amount of gold that did it.
Personally I like the all gold version infinitely more
It remains my favorite.
Every one agrees with you 😂
PRX killer 😉
Ha! I wonder if PRX sales spike from this. It already was pretty popular so I suppose not...
@@WatcheswithDennis It might actually help after they see the price 😀
@watcheswithdennis can you change the title to the video to "PRX Killer???"
@VBJoeMo *gasp*! Oh, imagine the downvotes. Almost worth it for the troll though.
Now VC can join Rolex in having a model that they can sell out the back door. Personally, I prefer the 4500v over the 222. Dennis, I’m sure you’ll be keeping an eye on the used gold 222’s(an image of Monty Burns putting his fingers together saying “EXCELLENT “)!😊
Call me crazy but I think this watch really shines in two-tone. A steel and rose with the grey/ anthracite dial would be my preference for a 222. As far as the seconds hand, I'm fine without it, in fact I think I prefer this watch with only two hands. Either way, unless VC comes out with the 111 then this is all academic - its way out of my budget.
I would be curious about a two-tone now that you mentioned it...
I would need to see the two-toned bracelet but agree. I love the look of the two-toned Santos. Is this steel 222 not two-toned? Dennis pointed out the gold cross :)
@@VBJoeMo There's a lot of vintage two-tones and they look really good, where the 'center' link is gold and everything else is steel. Also would fix that gold cross, that looks way out of place imo
I'm baffled why they didn't include a seconds hand 🤔
I'm guessing because there's no hacking seconds
Not sure, I think historically many didn't but I've seen at least one in 33mm that did. I suppose they thought it looked more classical like this.
@@carlkim2577Ironically, this movement does have hacking.
Because the movement 2455/2 has small second hand which doesn’t match the overall design. So VC completely dropped the second hand. I believe the in-house movement 2455 was chosen mainly because of its thin profile BTW 2455 does feature hack second
@kcmtsang good to know. But then you wonder why they didn't redesign the seconds hand. I really feel like this is a low effort release.
it's not worth the price
I knew it would be a lot but I was a bit surprised at first seeing it so much more than a stainless steel Overseas. But, at least short term they do know there is huge demand from a segment of collectors for a steel 222 and so they'll get it.
@@WatcheswithDennis yes they will get their 1 percent
My issue with the 1926 line is that they only seem to offer brown as a leather strap....yes I know I'll buy it with the bracelet, but with this one I see it as mods of a dress watch and I want leather on that.
Totally understandable, I prefer black leather straps for dress watches and get surprised when I do not see the option. I ended up buying some third party ones for certain watches so I have the option.
