Waxing and Mounting Watercolour Painting on Wood Panel or Cradle Board

This is a detailed demonstration of the process to take a watercolour painting on cotton rag, affix it to a wooden panel or cradle board, then protect it with cold wax medium. It is filmed over many days and so may be a bit repetitious, as is the way of the project! I ...

Alizarin Crimson and Lightfast Substitutions in Watercolour

This precludes it from being used in a work of art that is sold and or displayed. It can still be...

Try also PR 209 or PR 207 pigments. PR 207 more like coral or salmon and is my favourite. PR 209 is red quinacridone
Thank you for sharing this info. Learning a lot
@denisespillane9242 I'm glad you enjoyed it!
These watercolors with “florescent inks” added found many fade by accident. Gifted a set of “brush pens” that use some ink mixture but in less than 1 month many colors (never in the sun) faded badly. Once got real artist grade watercolors saw difference quickly & it’s a shame such gorgeous colors (not cheap) won’t last. However; not selling my art but am wary of the “ink” added so ty for this video.
PV19 quin red from DS or ruby red from Schmincke are my all-time favorites. They barely changed in 3 years on my window.
Awesome! Good to know!
Thank you! Great info!!! However, without Schminke‘s Horadam something huge is missing in the comparison game.
Which Schminke Horadam paint is the brightest while still being lightfast? I have to order those paints from overseas...so they are not readily available.
Very helpful!
thanks for watching and commenting!
I learn what is lightfast and what is fugitive. I do intentionally get fugitives anyway and even make wall hanging art. Frame under UV glass to make last longer. Or let it fade and just take it done and repaint over and/or put up anew artwork you make when it does fade. Now the issue is when SELLING originals and also if you intend a gift to last. Otherwise warn people if fugitives are involved. I’ve even made art where parts will fade intentionally so the art will transform over time!
Yes, I sell my originals so I need them to be lightfast. Thanks for your interesting comment!
There is a pink from daniel smith made with minerals, primatek rhodonite it is a beautiful pink and the chart says it is lightfast, maybe it can be an option.
I had read some other information (I think from Kimberly Crick) that it isn't lightfast, which is why I didn't include it. I really don't trust Daniel Smith unless they are tested independently. I believe they shot themselves in the foot a bit with their lack of transparency over their mineral paints. But thank you for mentioning it and thinking of me!
Thank you!
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Why is it that my favorite colors are fugitive? 😢
I know....but there are some really bright pinks that last longer. Try the Sennelier #690 Rose Madder Lake in PV19....It is very bright but slightly coral leaning. You can add a touch of blue to bring it back toward the cooler side of things if you want. And we can use whatever colour we want in sketchbooks!
Like Moonglow. 😭 I firmly believe it is a marketing ploy, and I'm not impressed.
Good information, really enjoyed your video, thank you
Thank you much!
Thank you for the comparison's it's always interesting to see a range of manufacturers paint choices. PR83 was used for alizarin crimson and also rose madder so it depends on the hue you're aiming for I suppose, the PR179 makes some sense to me as a sub for original rose madder which tends to have a brownish undertone as opposed to the alizarin lake dye. This colour has such an interesting history :)
Yes, it is fascinating to learn about pigments! Thanks for your comment.
You might be pleasantly surprised with DaVinci’s permanent alizarin crimson PV19, it is my favorite and waters down great and is far more beautiful than DS permanent alizarin crimson and many other brands. It is less expensive than many brands also.😊
Oh thank you! I will try to find that. We have one or two Canadian suppliers of that brand. I have tried several colours from Da Vinci, but not that one.
@@sararamer-dean7846 you are very welcome
Most of the Alizarin Crimsons are fugitive as well. KimCrick shows this on her TH-cam and website
This is just a swatchvideo, not a lightfastness test.
It is not a lightfast test...just a look at better options.
I'm not sure why artists stress about lightfastness .... I'm a custom art framer and whenever I'm framing watercolour, I recommend UV glass which will filter out 99.9% of UV. UV is everywhere, not just in direct sunlight. So I say protect your work with UV glass and enjoy EVERY colour regardless of the lightfast rating because there are options !!
Thanks for your comment. I preserve and mount my work without glass. That is why I care about lightfast ratings.
Try Rosa Gallery’s Rose Magenta! Brightest one me and my friends have seen!
Thank you! Some time when I can find these in Canada, I will try it!
I have tested Winsor & newtons opera rose in a bright sunny window during the summer for over 4 months and it literally did not fade at all. I have heard W&N’s opera rose is more lightfast than others. I think people exaggerate lightfastness ratings in general. Yes it’s important. But if opera rose can make it than most colors will. Prussian blue fades more than opera rose based on my tests. Plus…. Once it fades the PR122 is still there. It will simply fade down to a non fluorescent magenta and still be bright
Well, that is good to hear. I find lightfastness a worrying topic. I love Prussian Blue but never use it because of its' rating. Thank you for telling us about Opera Rose. I never use it though...but a sketchbook would be fine.
That IS a beautiful color chart, Sara!!! Inspiring. I have some thinking to do... and some observing what happens on paper, paint by paint.
Thank you! My ideas evolve over time...as should each artists'...but I love these colours. Lately I have been updating my 12-colour Portable Painter...it is hard to narrow the choices down. Glad you enjoyed my thoughts! Let me know what I should talk about in my next video, if you have a request.
Would it be possible to post a copy of your chart that we can save and use?
I would like to, but I haven't unlocked the Community tab....which is where I could do that. I haven't figured out any other way to share files here. Message me on Facebook and I can send it to you...you might need to friend request so I can see the message. I am there as Northern Impressions by Sara or Sara Ramer-Dean.
Interesting video, thanks for sharing your thoughts ❤️
Thank you for commenting! Feel free to make requests for video subjects. I am somewhat at a loss
Excellent video. This makes me want to conduct a pinks and a purples lightfastness test myself. I've seen wildly different test results for different people on fluorescent colors! For instance, in theory the Sennelier one should be much worse than the W&N since the PR81 is also fugitive. Holbein makes a lot of paints like that too, although they are gorgeous for sketchbook. You're so right that some reds dilute into a very unpleasant color which is not pink (honestly sometimes they remind me of Aunt Flo.) I think my new fave lightfast pink is Mission Gold's Quin Permanent Rose, but your swatch looks warmer than mine. Weird! I do like the DS Quin Rose very much too, interesting to see it next to the Quin Pink (one of the few I've not tried from them). I have the Schmincke PV42 and it's rather weak compared to PV19.
Thank you for the comments. It always amazes me how different colours look depending on the light and the camera used. Here my Dameron captures things with a more blue tinge than it should...to my eye. Steve on the Mind of Watercolour likes Maimeri Blu's Quinacridone Magenta, which is lightfast. I want to try that one day.
Camera*** not Dameron!!
Has anyone tested Daniel smiths genuine rhodonite
I have not, but I have heard that it is fugitive. I don't remember where! Thanks for asking your question.
I also have not but I have heard it browns???? And some have theorized it's oxidizing.
@@jennw6809 it browns…. Kind of. It’s my favorite naturalistic pink, but Sometimes brown flecks emerge, even as soon as the next day. However, that effect seems reduced in some mixes. I need to see more research because it Is lovely.
Oh awesome! You are a pigment nerd like myself. I studied handprint way back before it became outdated. But even now, most of the information is still current. Last I checked, Bruce is still living but hes totally retired. But I check a couple years ago. Quinacridone Gold that was originally the single pigment PO49, was never meant to be used as a warm yellow. It's just an another yellowish earthy pigment like PY43 & PY42. But because it was discontinued, companies try to replicate it with a mix. None look like the original to me. I bought lots if it for back up before it was gone. I like it better than Yellow Ochres or Raw Siennas.
Thanks for filling me in. I liked Bruce's work...and I still go read it! I know lots of people really love quinacridone gold, but it isn't my thing.
I agree. I don't want granulation in my sky either. Nor in skin or flower petals. They do have their place though. Especially landscape work and needed texture. Thanks for sharing. I live in Oregon where M Graham is made. Its pretty adorable here.
Oh my, it must be nice to live close to where some paints are made! Have you ever toured the factory?
I always love swatching videos. 😍 M Graham is one of my favorite brands, but they require a little mixing with water before painting on your paper. I'm glad you found those blues helpful. It's always fun trading watercolors with friends. 😊
Yes, thank you!
Love the final painting! It is lovely! Thank you for sharing every steps

I love the colour wheel. I don't currently own any M Graham. I'm sure I can come up with something similar with my watercolours (of which I have numerous brand's and colours). Any hint where to find the pattern for the wheel? I do not have a lot of mixed pigment colours apart from greens and some neutrals preferring single pigments and the ability to more cleanly mix colours. Have you bought from Jackson's(uk) or Arte Miranda (Sp) both offer reasonable shipping to Aus so insure they are reasonable to can.?
I just made this colour wheel up myself. If you go to Facebook, follow me on Northern Impressions by Sara and we can message. I can send you a photo of the blank wheel...but I don't know if I have a good clean image of it.
Im brand new to painting and watercolor paints, pink is my favorite I love all of these colors here. This was very informative and over my head as a beginner. I literally started yesterday and have completed one painting, trees in the mist with some added chickens! Im saving this video to revisit when I can actually understand it and know what Im doing a little better. New sub!
I typed an entire reply and then lost it! I sm very glad you began your watercolour journey. It is a very very good hobby and can be a living. But as a hobby, there are more benefits...because there is no pressure. Your painting sounds super lovely. If you want to create a snowy look, try a diluted Prussian blue with sprinkled salt! Sprinkling salt in a damp wash can make such cool effects! Enjoy yourself. Keep lightfastness in mind when purchasing colours and you will be good!
@@sararamer-dean7846 Thanks for the advice! I want to make cute paintings of eack of my chickens and coastal water scenes and flowers. Im on the Texas coast. sorry to hear of your ill health, i hope art will be able to lift your spirits. i teach watercolor painting, what i tell my beginners is "dont worry about lightfastness, just have fun with the paints" as your skills improve and you want to display your paintings, just be sure to hang them out of the direct sun.
This is really a lovely video. Thank you! And your birds in the background......so calming
Thank you! I am glad that you don't mind the birds!
Thank you for sharing. I love pinks also love painting flowers, so this helps alot!👍😃👋
Awesome...so glad it helps.
Thanks for sharing. I did this too since I have a lot of Brands to play with. Many batches of PR177 fades terribly. In my own 7 month test it faded a little. When its mixed with other light-fast pigments it still changes in color because when the PR177 is faded or gone, it changes hue. So in a mix, it might not fade much that in light but it changes hue since its not colorfast. I've been a portrait artist in realism, for years (retired) and now just want to play.
Thanks, Renee. I think that Old Holland may not fade...but I would have to test them all to see for sure! It is a frustrating thing...because one wants to trust the lightfastness rating of the manufacturer! I am glad you are getting time to play now! Do you teach portraiture? I am interested in getting better in that area for sure!
I did a light-fast test on some Opera Pinks for 7 months during longest south facing sunlight of the year as well as many other pinks. Its surprising how well Holbein Opera and W&N Opera Rose held up. What was left was a beautiful soft pink which was because of the PR122. Other brands have less of that or none at all, just the Florescent dye that totally vanishes. Eva Nichols Art here on You Tube showed her results. You Might like seeing it. Thanks for sharing! I love pigment talk since I've been a pigment nerd for many years. PS, The PV42 didn't hold up well compared to the PV19 and PR122.
Thanks, Renee! I will look up the lady who did the tests. I am so sad to hear about the PV42. I will never use any paint with flourescent dyes added because I don't view it as professional...and don't even think it should be marketed as such. But, there are people who just scan or photograph their work and don't use the original work. So for that and sketches, they can be used safely.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge ❤️
@@ewianart you are very welcome! Thanks for commenting!
The Opera Rose by Schmincke behaves like that too. Whats left is actually the same colour as in their Magenta. Just the "hotness" fades 😅
@@kromafilaArt imitates reality
Thanks for the great comparison. I have the Da Vinci substitute for PR83 called "Quinacridone Alizarin Crimson" which is the most crimson version of PV19. It's the closest to true Alizarin Crimson that I've ever found. PR177 is know to have lot of issues with lightfastness (see Kimberly Crick's blog and TH-cam channel about this) and there's issues with PR264 as well. The Da Vinci version is very lightfast and a very close match so that is the best option for me.
Glad to hear that you found a good match! I am waiting for the PR206 Version from Win. and Newton to arrive. The Old Holland version is one I would trust. Although it does gave some PR177, it did very well in lightfastness testing. I believe with the other lightfast pigments, it works! I will have to try your DaVinci choice sometime! It sounds great.
This was very very helpful...Thank you for sharing this. I am interested in DS Quin Pink as another option to my pallet!
It is another option, and it always helps to have options! Thanks for letting me know this was helpful. I appreciate it!
Great comparison and thank you for sharing. I really liked the OH, but finally saw the PR177 as part of its mixture. I havent found the perfect replacement yet. Genuine Rose Madder brings up another beautiful color that is just as fugitive. I hope you get well soon. 🥰 I'm recovering from a week of a very mild covid cold.😁
so sorry to hear you have been sick! I wish I had the Winsor Newton Permanent Alizarin Crimson made with PR206. I saw someone else swatch that out and it looked great. But so sad to hear that is another pigment that is being discontinued!
@@sararamer-dean7846 I just bought a tube a few months back from Dick Blick and it was still PR206. It is gorgeous.it would be worth calling around stores to see if they have the old pigment. 😊

Thank you very much!
Did you tell me about this TH-cam site ? So sorry I missed it all this time. Love Sennelier paints. Your painting is fabulous. Great idea for mixing dark with different colours.
Definitely the payne's grey is not necessary because you could mix lovely black or very darks with the chinese orange and the ultramarine. However, the ultramarine gets used up so fast for me because I use it to mix darks....so having a grey will allow you to have more blue for using as actual blue and purples. It is a great set for the price, and the paints are lovely because Sennelier adds honey. This makes the paint so much nicer to work with as it rewets easily and is more luminous.
Job well done, Sara! I enjoyed the video and painting along with you!
