Definitely the payne's grey is not necessary because you could mix lovely black or very darks with the chinese orange and the ultramarine. However, the ultramarine gets used up so fast for me because I use it to mix darks....so having a grey will allow you to have more blue for using as actual blue and purples. It is a great set for the price, and the paints are lovely because Sennelier adds honey. This makes the paint so much nicer to work with as it rewets easily and is more luminous.
