    I'm working on building out a van. How have the lath screws held up over time? Could I put some weight on the wooden panels when they're attached like that?

    • @theswansonspot62
      @theswansonspot62 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Lath screws have held up thus far. We sold the van, so I’m not entirely sure of their status. I think with tongue and groove ceiling holding the top of the walls and the bed and cabinets giving extra hold to them, I don’t foresee issues with the lath screws. .25” plywood was pretty flexible so it’s not like it’s pushing back too hard. I don’t know how much weight I would put on them though. Like if I was putting up a shelf I would try to screw them into the same metal that I screwed the walls to.

      Yeah, well, I had 2 straight forward ones, but on my model the back brace was at an angle and I couldn’t figure out how to attach one there. Probably could have just screwed it in at an angle, but 🤷🏼‍♂️. I also realized I needed to frame up around the fan so I had something to hold my ceiling when it hit the fan opening. Tons and tons of gorilla glue later I had something that held up pretty well. I ended up bracing my ceiling until I got my floor to ceiling cabinet up that gave it plenty of support.

And unfortunately there are no security cameras anywhere in this complex! I’m in California and I can’t understand how this place doesn’t have security cameras in 2024… now I have to figure out a new bed situation. I was just bawling my eyes out about this. yes! I saw this today! It looks so great! I’m trying so hard to understand everything but my goodness the electrical work is killing me! I have 2 large deep cell batteries and a 3000w inverter that was already in the van, but I don’t understand any of it. lol! I have a big orange wire for the ac outlets and removed the white wire I think was for 12 v. So idk. I’m just gonna keep watching your videos bcc I love your setup. And I think I’ll do the same electrical setup you have. Thanks for responding to my questions even though these videos are two years old. lol! I appreciate you!

    • @theswansonspot62
      @theswansonspot62 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We weren’t living in our van, so I didn’t want to added complexity and cost of setting up an inverter. I can see how someone who is going to spend their lives in the van may want a microwave or plug in a hair dryer or something like that. The idea was to keep it simple and safe, so that’s the route I took. I didn’t want to be reliant on campgrounds for electricity and we were doing a lot of driving so the DC to DC charger combined with solar was really practical for that. I didn’t want to get a 200Ah battery because it weighs 120lbs and I couldn’t afford a lithium ion one. So simple 12v for the fridge, fan, lights and USB chargers was just what we needed! I can take a look and see if I still have the electrical video I made and publish that if I can.

    • @theswansonspot62
      @theswansonspot62 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Electrical was the most confusing and overwhelming part of the build for sure! You’re not alone. TH-cam helped, but there seemed to be a base of knowledge that is assumed for most of them and I had none of that.

      @@theswansonspot62I won’t be living in this van either. But idk what these huge batteries are for or if I need them or the 3000w inverter. So maybe I should learn about the DC to DC bit. If it wasn’t for your video while framing your van and found that 12V plug i would have never seen mine in the exact same spot! So I pulled it out like you did and use it! So funny how it’s back there like that!

    • @theswansonspot62
      @theswansonspot62 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @chartmann43 the inverter is for converting your 12v battery into 120v so you can use it for standard outlets and stuff like that. Sort of depends on what you want to be able to plug in.

    Oh no! Wait? So you redid your wiring since the wiring video? 😮

    • @theswansonspot62
      @theswansonspot62 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some of it, yes. I ran the marine grade bonded wire from my pre wire video, but it was so rigid and hard to work with, so I opted to roll with just some 16 gauge as it was plenty for the basic 12v system that I put in.

  • @chartmann43
    @chartmann43 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Can I ask you where you started your wiring? I know you have a video on TH-cam but I didn’t see where you started? Mine was partially built out and it has a 3000 watt inverter and two big batteries that they put on the drivers side sliding door area, so the AC wires started there and I had to pull it through alll the way to the other side to make it useful. I actually removed all the 12v wires but just bought more since watching your videos and now I wanna redo it. But my floor was already done so I can’t go under the floor now. I have pulled the other wire from the inverter up and through the top in this space you just built and through the walls and down to the cabinet area (same as yours) and going to put two AC outlets and a little box with 12 V holes and gauges to monitor stuff but no clue how to connect it to the inverter now. I’m a mess! Haha!

    • @theswansonspot62
      @theswansonspot62 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We made an electrical closet right behind the drivers seat. Everything starts there. I ran most of the wiring under the overhang from the floor behind the seats. The other stuff like the solar panel and fan wiring, I ran up through the wall on the drivers side back.

      Yes, the curvatures of this model are crazy madness. Nothing was straight which lead to so many more challenges than I anticipated. I would suggest getting boards thinner than 3/4 inch if you can so they can flex with the curves a little better. I saw one video a long time ago that used 1/4 inch tongue and groove planks. That would have been great, but I couldn’t find anything like that near me.

      We did not. It made driving around the country for two weeks and is still trucking with its new owner.

    Just want to say thank you for this video. I’ve seen a lot of transit connect xlt van tours with sliding drawers under the bed, but this is the first video I’ve seen that actually shows how to build them. I’ve spent the last four or five weekends building my bed using this video as a guide, and I really appreciate how you left in your mistakes and talk through the process of building it, because that’s how it is in real life, and it really helped me to understand that mistakes are part of the process. So thank you for making this van build series. My van looks better than I ever could’ve imagined because I had these videos to help me.

      You’re very welcome! This is exactly why I made this series. In my own hours and hours of searching for answers on building our van, there was a pretty big void when it came to real step by step instructional videos. I wanted to create the resource I wish I had when building the van. It’s a messy and sometimes frustrating process filled with mistakes and a lot of reward as well. Happy to hear it was helpful for you, and good luck with your build!

      The cabinets are all 3/4 inch plywood. Thanks for watching!

    Think you had the easily flooring out all of the videos I seen. Guess it time to steal dumbbells from the gym 😅just kidding. Did you end up using two sheets of plywood or just one?

      Ha! They definitely came i handy for this. We, fortunately, got a bunch pre-Covid when dumbbells were reasonably priced. Just one 1/2 inch piece of plywood

      Yes! This was something I didn’t anticipate going into the build. It turned out really nice despite the amount of times I had to bang my head on a wall to figure something out. 😁
