#vanlife #backpacking #camping #travel in our 1995 Chevy G10 4x4 van. Always looking for new places on and off the trail. We'll do some stealth backpack camping and off road dispersed camping along the way. We've criss crossed the country many times and also enjoy taking in a few days at some of our nations most beautiful park campgrounds. I converted this van into a van life camper and will probably always be updating and changing things throughout our adventures.for electricity we have a 260 watt solar panel on the roof, 170 AH renogy lifepo4 house battery w 3000 watt inverter and dc/dc charger for when the sun isn't cooperative! The van is a 95 w a 305TBI rebuilt engine ( 318k on the odometer! ) 4l60e transmission ( installed in 2018) NP205 transfer case w a 14 bolt K 30 back end and a Dana 44HD up front w locking hubs. Full roof rack w escape hatch to get onto from the inside and a pair of Maxi- Trac awnings. We'll see you on the road or trail soon !!
4x4 van build episode 7
My love affair with this amazing van continues ! We just put 3,400 miles on a cross country trip from PA to the Olympic Peninsula and I am backed up on the buildout videos. So here is episode 7 of our #vanlife build. I get the vinyl flooring in, add some Havelock wool insulation, install some door steps (This thing has a massive lift ) and get some much needed vent shades installed. It's not perfect, no #vanconversion is. But if you want to see what really goes into making a #4x4van suitable for long distance travel you've found the right channel. This van currently has 318,000 miles on the body and about 45k on a rebuilt 305TBI v8 and I'm telling you it runs like a clock We won't be breaking any land speed records but there are very few places we can't go in this big old brick ! Please check out the prior build videos and please stay tuned for more ! If you like this sort of stuff please give us a like and subscribe. Take care and safe travels to ya !

4x4 Vanlife build episode 5. Bed platform and Insulation

Starting to get to the "fun" stuff. I used 1/2" polyboard x2 on the ceiling and walls and 1 layer on the floors. I am doing this #vanconversion on my own with limited experience and I am just finding my way through. Most of my #vanbuild has been demo and restoration so...

Trying not to leave any stone unturned before we hit the road. Its coming along great and I appreciate you checking it o...

So it has been a full year since I purchased the Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL3 from REI. It has been a lot of places with me, in a lot of different weather and on many surfaces. Hi Doug, do you have an exact location of that campsite where Spanky memorial was? Might be interested on camping there. Thanks for the feedback! Great video!
We spent the 1st night camped just past the Little Schloss mtn overlook ( Little Sluice trail ) so that spot you're inquiring about is probably 2 miles or so north heading toward the tuscarora trail. you'll hike right through it. We took the left on tuscarora and then completed the loop w another left just past the forest service hut ( which can be rented ) and spent a 2nd night about 3 miles down trail from that point.
What size tarp do you use as the footprint?
@@erintoby2605 this was one I cut to match the underside of the tent. It was probably an 8x8 off the shelf. I like it for camping on rougher surfaces - pine needles and snow.
LOL
If I need that kind of footprint for a super light Big Agnes I can buy a top Hilleberg tent, a bit heaver but no footprint needed.
Hey man, I just wanted to say I think this is a such a cool van! And the door configuration is sweet. I lost my leg a year ago. I’ve had 17 surgeries because all the nerve damage Plastic surgery and trimming when needed. So I’m not going to see a prosthetic for a while. Seriously if you do think about selling this thing, I don’t have a pile of cash, but when I saw this, I saw a function! Also looks super cool. But having the doors on the both sides, my wheelchair would hop right in there so if you feel like selling it, let me know. I probably can’t afford it right now but I’ve got a I can try to sell. Super cool! I love the idea and it being four-wheel-drive is killer I’m from Northern Minnesota and I’ve had pretty good luck with 2 Wheel Dr. vans to be honest my last one rusted out but I have a shop now so I can wash my truck, so it really helps with the salt. Plus I’ve been doing underbody coatings . I use upol or a raptor mix… I don’t comment very much. I just thought I would. This is really a cool van. Have a great day
I apologize. Otherwise, do you have any leads or any ideas where I could find a van like this? I’m sorry for my “trying to buy it!” comment. That was probably disrespectful.
Certainly appreciate your checking it out ! And I’m happy that you are able to start getting your mobility back. Thank you for sharing your story with me - We’ve been very happy with this van - has its quirks for sure but we’ve gone cross country from PA to the PNW and that’s where we’re currently posting up - I never got to a final build video and I’ll get one posted soon. If we ever sell I will start with you !
@@MnLandWork-pk5qunot at all !! Glad to know someone likes it like I do !
Great video, really informative and useful Just one question, do the extra bits of paracord to stake out that one end come with the tent, or do I have to get those separately?
The tent will come with enough cord to stake it out just about anywhere- I added to small loops just to be able to get it to stake in particularly awkward areas ! you can stretch to around a tree or rocks where you can't get a stake into the ground for example-
@@dougcaye7786 ok, thank you for the clarifications
Any new updates?
It’s been awhile !! We’re clear cross country now living in Oregon and we’ve had the van all over the place out here. Crazy year last year w the move - but ready to get back to some van build/ trip vids and backpacking vids etc … thanks for checking in.
Just got this guy for backcountry elk hunting!!
Thank you. Just got mine.
I've seen people say it's not really a 3 person, but what about 2 adults and an 8 year old? All of our sleeping pads combined are 60" across at the head, and this tent claims to be 66" so I was hoping that'd work fine
Should work just fine w a child. I definitely wouldn’t put 3 adults in there though ! I’m still very happy w this tent. Make sure to dry it out if you pack it up wet and I’ve set it up on a lot of different surfaces w no problems. Happy trails
Got the Tiger Wall UL 2. Same thing just the 2P version. Bought the footprint too; definitely worth it. It should be included but that’s another conversation. Got a Duplex as well (yes it was $700). Love them both, many nights in each, neither have let me down. Just depends on the trip or my mood which one I take. Lately Big Aggy has been my go to. I’m a hammocker as well. One love; maybe see you on the trail someday.
What about 1 adult your size and 2 kids? Ages 9 and 5. Would they fit?
I think you’d be ok for a night or two if you’re backpacking in somewhere. It’ll be a little tight but doable :)
Awesome looking van. Sprinters and the like are ugly. Great sink and shower set up. Enjoy your videos.
Thanks for taking a look. Love this old thing ! We should be back out on the road for some new adventures pretty soon. We relocated to the PNW so lots of new stuff to discover. I will do a full video of the completed van as well. Thanks again.
Good video Doug, I'm from NW PA, there is nothing worse than people going into the woods to party and then don't want to take their crap back out. If you can carry your items in, you should be more than able to carry it out. In my mind there's nothing more ignorant!
Thanks Bernie- We're out in Oregon now and the stuff you find in the woods here is just plain spooky ! rope - brass knuckles- a burnt coat in a fire ring :) but the scenery makes up for it. I'm w you pack it in pack it out.. it aint that hard. Thanks for taking a look and I'll have some new van stuff and camping vids etc.. soon. We're just gettin settled to the west coast !
What map did you use for this section of the trail? Planning a trip in April and I’d love to do this same loop
Hi Sara- I just used the map from the park service for dolly sods. fs.usda.gov - This will be a great April trip for you. Water will be up and the creek crossings are unavoidable so wet feet are a given ! but I really like these southern loops the best. If it's crowded at the campsites at dunkenbarger/Bigstonecoal intersection. Make the left on dunkenbarger and go about 3/4 mile and there is one of my favorite campsites back in the pines to the right. There's a little meadow and creek and you'll see the path going into the woods on your right. Have fun be careful :)
Dual side barn doors? That's a very fucking rare option. You don't see that kind of SPECIMENS until MY2003.
This one was a DIY build about two owners ago. The giveaway is that the doors are reversed from the passenger side. I didn't know if it was factory or not when I bought it- ( they did a good job ) Love this thing ! heading up to Washington to pick it up in a few weeks and bring it to the Oregon Coast. Thanks for checking it out !

You're, truly welcome.
nice, looking chevy van.
Thanks ! appreciate it.
I really love the Air Core Ultra.. I think for the price it's an incredible value. I also have the 25" wide version. Several reviews mentioned the insulation coming detached inside the pad resulting in cold spots, but so far so good for me.
Thanks for taking a look - I have not had any issues w insulation flaking off either. I try and use a pump bag instead of my breath. I think the moist air can get in there and that may be the culprit. Lotsa pine needles and rocks where I camp most of the time- I like having that heavy duty sleeping pad even if it's not the lightest thing on the market ! take care :)
How wide is your bed ?
Hi Mike - it's just a hair under 6' long and 4' wide. I didn't want the bed longwise in the van as we want it set up permanently. So I went with the 1" poly-board insulation and then the thin luan right into the van ribbing. Shoved some Havelock wool anywhere it could fit. But that gave me enough room to stretch out ( im 5'10" ) Melissa's just 5'1" and about 95 pounds so that helps !
Thank you so much for your response I appreciate it !
Build a little box for the back of those speakers it will sound alot better
thanks - I considered mounting them but I wound up taking the speakers out of the doors behind the driver and passenger seats. the two up front are pretty loud and we use a Bluetooth JBL speaker when we’re just chillin’ .
We great stuffed expanding foam all the nooks and crannies under our old van and the gaps between the walls and support channels on the roof and walls and it made a huge difference
That a good idea- I may do some of that in addition to the Havelock wool. it works well but still hard to get it into all the crevices. It only takes a cold night or two to see where you need to get more insulation in !
I'm trying to convert my van to 4x4 on my own. Is there anyway that you can go over in detail how the front was converted including the front spring perches and how the front spring shackle was fabbed up it would be greatly appreciated 👍
I will - I have the van out in Washington right now. But I have to get some things tightened up before we hit the road again. Motor mount needs some attention and a rear hanger is cracked so when we start w that I’ll get some video of the underside and what’s going on - I bought this converted it was a DIY job a few owners back. I had to repair the rear spindles they fused and the axle Walked out ! - all the bearings all the seals -brakes , booster new shocks etc … it’s been a project. But I’ll get some clips once I get back out there and get to work on it. Thanks
Looking pretty dang good! I'm starting on my floor the exact same way. Those window guards look nice, I'm adding a windshield visor as well! What kind of antenna is that in the driver side mirror??? I'm wanting to do cb and ham radio I'm my g20.
thanks Bobby - the antennae is a cell phone booster - plugs into a 12v socket I have powered by our house battery and gets us 4-5 bars most anywhere. We were streaming movies in the middle of nowhere on this last trip. It’s great for staying in touch when you’re out there a bit. I’d like to get a windshield visor on this one -A buddy wants to give me a CB for free I think I’m gonna throw it in there too.
@@dougcaye7786 that antenna sounds like quite great idea. I like the idea of the cb for some local info. I've used it when traveling to asked locals for directions and places to go. I'll be looking forward to the next video!
It's just another good "safety" item to have along with you for sure. I also know that on some longer narrow forest roads they sometimes have a CB channel so you can alert drivers who may be descending that you're on your way up ! so no-one has to back up for 4 miles ! :) Have good one !
Looking great Doug! You'll soon be out on your travels👍😁 Off away in ours this weekend, but looks like it will be a cold and wet one!
have fun Des ! I’m backed up on the build videos. We already drove this big old brick 3400 miles from Pennsylvania out to the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. We did a lot of camping along the way. I look forward to your trip video ! best to you and Maria
AWESOME. I have a white '92 cargo G20. I would love to make it 4x4.
Thanks Stax -They're the best ! I looked for a long time to find one that was converted already and found this one in North Carolina- seems the chevy G's are highly regarded as excellent candidates for the 4x4 conversions. I'll be updating and improving it as long as I have it. Reliable and lots of fun !! Thanks for watching the vid- more to come - take care
Man that looks sweet! Nice floor and bed platform 👍 Cats rule the house 😂
thanks buddy - Cosmo has been w us nearly 20 years ! he definitely runs the show :)
I think the floor of your van is nicer than my house!
Mine too ! Lol. I’d let a sink drip in My house for 5 months but a leak in the van …Never! Ps cool to see that you got out for a trip with Papa Bear ! That’s awesome! Best to you and thanks for your support as always
Looking good. Question, with those rain guards, can you still open the wing glass?
Hi Jerry - no issue w the vent glass being able to open. Thanks for checking the video out ! Appreciate it -
This looks just great, beautifully presented my friend.👌
Thank You ! it's been a lot of work and we're finally out on the road enjoying it ! appreciate your support : )
Going to be a good one when she is done. I wish my van had that much ground clearance... Subscribed.
I appreciate the sub thank you ! We have the van done already and have been on a 3000 mike cross country trip- I'll be uploading the rest of the build videos soon ! Thank you for checking out the vid .
Show some 4x4 actions. We need to know how these RARE g20s perform offroad as compared with the millions ford e350, which every Tom dick and Harry puts there hands on. We need Sportsmobile to understand how underrated these real g20s are.
We just done w a 3400 mile trip out west and I’ll be uploading some new video soon. Still have one buildout video to post and then we’ll get to some more on the trail stuff for sure ! This one is actually a G10 - converted a few owners ago w a Dana 44HD up front. Appreciate you watching and I’ll have some new stuff up here soon.
Great update Doug! All coming together nicely👍 All the best and catch you soon👍😊
Thanks Des ! I’ve been totally engrossed in this and now we’re finally out on the road using it - PA to Oregon so far just about 3k miles altogether. Getting some hiking in along the way - boy was I out of shape! I’ll get caught up on your vids too ! Always enjoy them but man oh man this has been a project !
Coming along nicely!
Thank you - we’ve put almost 3k miles on since the build was completed and are out on the Oregon coast all the way from PA - and will have the last of the build episodes up pretty soon and will shift to some vancamping vids. The electronic/solar install was pretty tough for me but it works great - appreciate your support. Stay tuned ! Take care

Very nice work! That sink/shower is pretty cool 👍
thanks buddy ! it’s simple !! that’s the key. We didn't need to run lines and an additional storage tank and a separate water pump etc.. I kept thinking “if this thing fits in a water jug we’re good”!
Man that storm sounds pretty bad!
A lot to think about! Making good progress in what appears to be a short time.
Man that's quite a bit of work but it's looking good!
