Ojika, Nagasaki | Japanese Diary 日本語の日記
I made a new Japanese practice video diary, from my home for two months: Ojika, Nagasaki. It's a beautiful tiny island in Japan without any convenience stores, that feels like going back in time!

    Hey. Thanks so much for the video. I’ve been stuck in a really bad depression for over 2 years now.... I guess I don’t really need to get into it other than that. But yesterday I was thinking “what is the opposite of depression?” I never really thought of it before. Most people’s base line answer would say it’s to be happy..... but that’s the opposite of sad, not depression. Anyway I think you are absolutely correct. The opposite of depression is totally to have intention. Thanks a lot! I will try and apply this to my life.

    食 was one of the first kanji I learnt just because Yuta (online teacher) used it all the time in the first videos where the sentences were mostly about eating or not eating something. So it's super easy to me now, ありがとう、先生! :) I've heard it's better study kanji not writing the same kanji more than three times in a row, because then the brain will switch to 'auto' mode and you're not learning anything. Instead if you do study like five different kanji at the same time you'd better make it an irregular pattern like: abcde... aacebddaeebbebaebd or something like that. I also hear this talk about learning radicals first, so I'm wondering if that will be effective. (At least I use radicals in jisho, even though I've never intensively studied them, but learning more kanji they begin to clear out, though I wonder if I should give them a proper studying time...) What you say about connecting the kanji to your personal life is true. I have Fire Emblem Heroes I started playing in Japanese, also some manga and I like to jot down funny anime phrases as well. Anime's such a great source for memorising/learning words! :D Recently, I've also began to place some kanji around the house, like colours. It's so much more fun and effective when you treat it less like a burden on your shoulders. Motivation is definitely the key! Hope I remembered that more often though. ^^

    I think i have seen you on facebook on the japanese english exchange or maybe it was gaijin pot anyways. I like what you are saying here everyone is different though I found out alot of about my self. The quiet alone time does provide a good platform for much needed introspective thought for some as many people have alot going on in life they keep themselves so busy and have so much going on with life and responsibilities ect.. So when they step back from all of that they really can find a good bit about their own being.

    Next year I will be going to Japan for my year abroad. Meiji Gakuin is on my list of unis to go to because it is so close to Tokyo. The problem is that I think it's too close to Tokyo. I like being in a place where stars can be seen (so unlike London) and high pollution hurts my nose. Can you tell me things about Meiji? What are the dorms like? I know there is a dorm that only house foreign students, but is there one that includes Japanese students as well (I would prefer to live with Japanese students). Can you tell me about the classes and perhaps the price of things. I believe if I were to live so close to Tokyo it would be extremely expensive, compared to another uni such as Obirin. If you could write back that would be great.

    • @Jolvie
      @Jolvie 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Cosima - I stayed in DK House which is a dorm that has Japanese students as well, but it was still mainly international students. It wasn't very expensive since I paid in advance for the entire semester and I only had a small room, plus it was quite far from the main areas like Shinjuku and Tokyo station. I would recommend that you find a homestay perhaps, since that is what I would have done if I could have done it all over again! If you're not someone who is a huge fan of big cities and like to see the stars I wouldn't recommend Tokyo even though Meiji University is a fantastic school with excellent Japanese classes. You should probably check out a school that is more rural if you're like more of a nature-y experience with less international students!

      Aw thank you so much Kamila! I think it's so cathartic to realize that we can share our negative emotion, frustrating situations etc. and not just the highlight reels. I too have this "ideal version" of myself and it's inevitable when I don't live up to it, so rather than focus on the things I can change, bit by bit, I feel overwhelmed and disappointed by expectations that I know will not be met. There were also quite a few comments saying that it was a moving piece of fanfiction etc.☺️ Tbh, I thought you seemed nervous but also real. Like you were actually there and trying to comfort someone in such a horrible situation which is always uncomfortable and awkward and sad and difficult. I think the best part is when you tell Augustus a story. It was lovely. Truly!

      @Jolvie 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's funny that's exactly the impression I got from it now, watching it in a more detatched way (since it's been 6 years)! Like, I won't say I think I'm a great actor but I thought the nervousness almost seemed like it could've been part of the scene. Or at least, that's probably how I'd react in that situation a lot of the time, although I think you could tell I didn't really know the guy that well - if I was actually in love with him, I probably would have been less nervous. Thank you so much, I'm glad you liked it! :)

    Great video! I wanted to say I heard something great about feelings too, "feelings are not facts". You're so right about the makeup! I wear it maybe a few times a week and I am comfortable with my face and so I don't care when I don't wear makeup (im not looking at me haha) but then when I have a day where I feel like I want to wear makeup and I put it on I feel like I don't even look right. But I love makeup and I'm just not sure. I love it when I see people without makeup, like you! To me that shows you are comfortable in your own skin and that is a rarity these days. And that sucks about your PE experience, I loved PE, it was my favorite place to be haha. I loved running (track and xcountry runner here) and so probably explains my love for exercising today. Im not always motivated but I have learned to just go do it because I feel better after. I'm sorry I'm taking your whole page. Oh and yes I also have made several decisions based on what I would think others would think of me unfortunately. Mostly disappointing my parents so I didn't do a lot of things I wish I had. Anyways, great video, I love it. Keep up the great work. Im working on posting my own video actually but about being present and another about my IBS and digestion tips. Much love to ya! Bye!!!

    Jolvie do you know of the manga "Yotsubato!"? I highly recommend it, it has helped me a lot with learning new kanji. If you don't know of it yet, I recommend you search for Japanese Ammo's vid about it. You'll find all the kanji have furigana. Even though at first you do get tempted to read the furigana, eventually you start focusing on the kanjis and you start identifying them and knowing their reading. I'm saying all this bc when I've been to Japan I found them at a secondhand shop for like ¥300 each, which is so very cheap. I decided then to only buy two volumes bc I didn't think I would actually be able to read them anytime soon (my japanese was very very rusty at the time), but this year eventually I managed to finish them both AND understand AND enjoy the narrative! But now they're just way too expensive for me to buy them from here, even online )': like 4 to 5 times more expensive. And that is something I regret not hoarding for while still in Japan haha anyways, good luck from now on!

      Yes!! What you're exposed to a lot, becomes second nature. Also, the kanji that happen to be a part of a lot of words are now super easy for me to write. 曜 and 食 for example, those are super easy for me to write now, which is fun since they're not even the simplest ones. :)

      also, I absolutely loved the concept of this video! it is brilliant in that it shows we are all trying! we will all eventually make mistakes and it's ok! We can see how hard you're trying and how much you are succeeding in getting a message through! Watching you develop your sentences is almost like as if you were practicing a new song on the piano or guitar: progress is slow sometimes but the more you go through the whole song over and over again, the closer you are to mastering it! Thank you for this Kimmy, it inspired me so much I might eventually make a video like that with my real Japanese level! best wishes
