A talk I gave at the Fr. Leo Hetzler Conference of the Rochester NY Chesterton Society on Nov. 12, 2022. This was a real labor of love, on one of my favorite subjects which I never get to talk about: Anglo-Saxon England. (Note: Joseph Pearce informed me at the conference afterparty that when pronounced correctly, "Jarrow" rhymes with "arrow.")

This is the talk David gave at the 2007 Rochester, NY Chesterton Conference on the conversion of St. Paul. I include it here instead of on their channel (@rochesterton) because there are short clips of rare video of David teaching, which I've lined up with the audio of the talk. After running it through a shake reduction filter, the results are not great, but watchable.

It’s so well presented however as an English Catholic I’ve got to say by 20:19 we really needed to hear something about the Hyberno-Scottish Mission. It’s a backhanded gift to the Anglicans not to view Aidan, Fursey and the other Irish and Scottish missionary bishops as crucial apostles in the English Catholic tradition too - ok their Easter dating and liturgy was insular and some did try and resist the Roman traditions - however if we don’t count the Celtic tradition as by and large authentically Catholic and respectful of Roman primacy we leave the Anglicans with the argument that they have a separate source for their church structures apart from Rome. Also the fault isn’t Bede’s - you mentioned Chad who was part of the Celtic tradition presumably because Bede does. Bede definitely under-appreciates the Celtic influence - he was in the firmly Roman tradition so no surprise. However he also definitely mentions the Hyberno Scottish mission and its hero’s frequently and acknowledges their importance. He almost tries to downplay the Insular monastic and liturgy background of the saintly Celts and adopts a very different tone when talking about the ones who were troubled by the Easter change. That implies a deep respect for their work and authenticity even if he really hated their Easter custom

This faith principle is understandable but one should be open minded. Might be some sources are actually Hebrew based, there might be multiple sources … the issue is like science vs faith again. Let the hypothesis be hypotheses and if necessary try interpretation and doubt so keep your faith but not dogmatic. Those not even one dot can be interpreted different to the other extreme everything can be re-interpreted is not a good reading. If you have disagreed those, quoting faith is not a good idea. It is the objective no doubt to you. But you cannot just quote objective. Too many people got burnt in the stake by your guys because what they said is not the faith version at that time. May god be with you, always. But open minded, that is why you studied even rabbi and check out all these. And history of Catholic frankly has too many dark sides. He might not be right but given up fighting Galileo only in 1970s. That is not faith. That is stupid dogma. You know what the last few comments on Protestant study bible is why I am here. Catholic and Protestant … beyond this and read both. You narrow down to faith you cannot fit in both but you study with open eyes … May God bless you “all”.

The best Bible is always the original, The King James Version, only because it is translated to mean specifically to the gospel, all other Bibles change the meaning of The Word or give it a new interpretation. I will list a few verses from the King James Bible and a few from the ESV. Here are two identical verses with slightly different wording (I put the differences in ALL caps): "And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the HOLY GHOST:" (John 20:22 KJV) and then the ESV version, "And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the HOLY SPIRIT:" (John 20:22 ESV). You see how two words can change the whole context of a scripture! Stick to the King James Version as it allows you to conceptually read the TRUE gospel as it was meant to be read. Amen! Amen!!!

Hello Ted! Have you heard of the new Ignatius Press Catholic Study bible? I saw you did a review on the new testament version in another video! It might be worth checking out and re-review, I've also heard they've changed and added a lot in the new testament in the complete edition! I'm thinking of getting it along with a catholic study bible in my native language. I also want to ask about the NJB and RNJB! I really want a more dynamic catholic translation (I'm not sure about the CSB as it's very baptist) and I've come to the conclusion the NJB is the best one! What would you consider problematic with it aside from the notes (getting a reader's edition) and the inclusive language (I don't really care too much about that)? Personally I hate that it uses the Tetragram instead of something like "THE LORD" in small caps. I also want to hear what you think about the RNJB and if it's better or worse than the NJB. Thanks!

It is worth recognizing that the Orthodox fathers at Jerusalem used the Thomistic terminology such as transubstantiation. I do not imagine that to be an artifact of the original document having been translated. I have heard it said that some Orthodox schools of theology incorporated the work of Aquinas into their thought, having found it to be wholely congenial to the eastern understanding.

I went back and forth on getting the NRSVCE because of the commentary on the gender inclusive language. Then when I saw that the WOF bible uses that translation, I figured if it was good enough for bishop Barron, then I would give it a go. I have not made it through the whole bible yet, but all the qualms are not a deterrent for me to continue reading it. It is ecumenical, very affordable, and available in multiple formats. Also, as a person who is speaks two languages, the nuances do not bother me, since I come from a culture that understands things can be expressed differently. I feel as though people who are hung up on wording may be only English speakers? And in all fairness, that is a point taken as it is an English translation, but I do believe that part of reading requires critical thinking. I am waiting for the long awaited Ignatius study bible (RSV2CE), and will have to compare later.

Dear St. Irenaeus Ministries, Why do you have so much bias against NAB? No translation is perfect. Actually, NAB is the ONLY modern translation which correctly translates Ps 110:3. This is important because it is directly related to the DIVINITY and SONSHIP of Christ. NAB - "..like dew I BEGOT you." All other translations (RSV) - "..like dew your youth will come to you." NAB had the guts not to use the corrupted section of Masoretic text but the Septuagint. My favorite translation is RSV but NAB is good in some respects.

Infant baptism is not biblical salvation. It makes no sense at all. Useless. Worthless. Heretical. Injurious ? Probably. Ignorant ? Yes. Risky ? Definitely. Is an infant marriage ceremony valid ? No. We are born of the word of God first. Faith comes by hearing. Said no baby ever.

I thought that “Being Saved” didn’t make sense. Does it mean that you will never sin again? That heaven is assured because one makes a declaration? We are all sinners and never far from falling into sin thus the need for confession, repentance and penance. Salvation is a process towards which we strive and seek. I think it is a false assurance. If you told me that “being saved” is the first step on the road to salvation I would agree but it is not an ending or settled matter but a constant contention with the devil within.

Can I just say that as an evangelical Protestant that its really refreshing to hear a Roman Catholic TH-camr taking Scripture and its authority so seriously. I've honestly been quite frustrated by a certain tendency in intramural conversations where it seems the average Roman apologist will betray a certain willingness to degrade Holy Scripture if only to spite those of us who see it as the final court of appeal. I've also had a taste of academia and was left feeling like I was on eggshells in some of my classes in a place I thought should be able to focus my attention on deepening understanding and challenging others in good mannered engagement with the Scripture we agreed on compared to defending the validity of God's Word in a place founded by faithful Christians.

Not to take anything away from what you said, I have a different perspective on having a personal relationship with Jesus. Through baptism we have a relationship with God the Father as sons and daughters (for those who need the inclusive language) and a relationship as brothers (and sisters) with Jesus. For me, the personal relationship is one as family, not friends. And since the Trinity is the model of family, I have a familiar relationship with the Holy Spirit that I don't have similes/metaphors to describe, but just as real. Prayer then becomes talking to a family member, not just a list of petitions. In Christ's love.

Medical reality checks are bouncing. My advice is, count on a mix of 1860's civil war medicine with a smidge of, walking dead left overs. Medical is more sepcialized than law enforcement..less in numbers too. From the field trauma to the Surgical to the rehabilitative care. No helicopter coming to carry you away to a surgical team. But as long as you have a decompression needle, good to go. Be careful around law enforcement. Some of those guys really believe their taser nullifies snake bite.
