Thank you for this great review, and thank you for including the Strathmore 400 series watercolor sketchbook. You're the first person I've seen actually talk about it. It's my go-to cellulose watercolor paper, and in my opinion, it's better than some cotton papers I've used. It really can take a beating. They also make a 100% cotton mixed media sketchbook, but I haven't tried it yet.

Thanks for all the work you put into the video. I'll definitely be trying a couple of the books you reviewed. I've also tried a Canson sketchbook but as I've only recently come to sketching and painting the jury is still out as to whether it will end up a favourite book. It's spiral bound which I'm not too keen on.

Thank you for another enjoyable video, Doug. Part of the multi-pronged appeal of this channel is the Yorkshireness, and I'm pleased to say that I had this one down as Ripon from the thumbnail. The perspective gives the picture a strong horizontal thrust straight through the tops of the phone boxes and the eaves of the thingummy, so that might be why the vertical emphasis isn't as strong as expected. Not a problem in my opinion.

The A5 Seawhite watercolour travel journal also comes in portrait format but very few outlets seem to stock it…..I don’t know why

Thank you for speaking about the benefits to ones mental health thru art. I discovered that for myself totally by accident. As my husband suffered with Alzheimer’s, I was suffering too with the slow loss of my best friend. I found that sketching on a regular basis took my brain to another space. It allowed me to hang onto at least a little joy. I now have 2 fountain pens with carbon ink to use with my watercolors and they are my favorite sketching tool. Thank you for your videos. They are very inspiring as I go thru my healing process.

Great picture and video! A question (nowt to do with the video). What type of eraser do you use please? I paint on a heavy rough paper, and I seem to struggle rubbing out my pencil work after I’ve added the pen - there’s always a residue left behind!! Any ideas/suggestions would be welcome.

Royal Talens started making paint 125 years ago! I find the price/quality ratio in the Netherlands excellent, especialy with the large 20 ml tubes! Daniel Smith is rather expensive.

Any tips for people who likes changing ink color efficiently but oftentimes only carry 1 pen?

Meghan did not give birth FACT. She had a hysterectomy in her 20s or thereabout. So she could have turned up as probably her mother, or the real mother, could baby sit.

Thanks for a great review. I have used Moleskine for urban sketching and sketching in museums for years but on a trip to CASS Art they showed me a Pith sketchbook and I love it, great for pen and wash and minimal watercolour. I use Seawhite travel journals for serious watercolours, I prefer the texture to the similar Hahnemuhle although I prefer the cover on the Hahnemule! Now I'm going to try Strathmore and Stillman and Burns after seeing your review. My wife will kill me!

You won't get much texture if you use paints made with small pigments like phthalos and quinacridones. Ultramarine is technically a flocculating pigment, not a granulating pigment. You'll see its texture is different from granulating pigments like burnt umber. Granulating pigments have particles of different sizes, so they settle out of a wash unevenly. Flocculating means the particles clump together and leave larger patches of light color between the clumps. IIRC, the only other flocculating pigment is mars black (which is magnetic).

I am using a yellow lami pen. What a coincidence. It is great and I like it better than the disposable micro pens. It was a sign of being grown up when you could use a fountain pen in my childhood. They bring back fond memories. Thanks

Second comment about how to say Fude. Fude is the Japanese brush pen and pronounced Fude-ay. The fountain pen is usually pronounced Food as it’s not the brush. I think you can call it what you like.

It’s pronounced food as there is no accent on the e. Beautiful drawing

Thanks for this, Doug. I never understood the difference between pigment in paint and dye in ink. Also, it looked like you created a bead to bring the ink down the page. I never considered that. (And I do appreciate the simple, fun scene!)😊

Great words of wisdom Doug. I love the fountain pen but I must tell you the biggest tip from your good self which I have found really freeing is the use of the grey fine liner for sketching as I have to be honest I am not a fan of pencils as I wasted so much time with the eraser trying to get the drawing correct. I am very confident now out sketching knowing that when I get my fountain pen out back home I can tweak mistakes.

Have you used the Fude pens. I have just started using one and it takes a bit of getting used to but it’s proving invaluable. I would love to know what you think of them and how do you use it.
