When you get your skills honed you start looking at the artists - whose work you used to want to be able to make - and think 🤔 you could tweek & improve upon something they've done 😂😂 I am autistic & not sure how to put it into words. Not that the artists you admire aren't brilliant or that their art 🎨 needs improvement. I am just saying how you know you're done with #FanArt and you're going yout own way. As a mathematician I think the easiest analogy would be to say art is just like any other recipe: each [culinary] artist/chef is going to put their own spin on spaghetti 🍝, chicken soup, burgers 🍔 or whatever. You only need water, pot, pasta noodles. Every cooks sauce sauce is going to be unique. 😊
All so true 👍. There is rarely anything new about people's art from a literal and material perspective except thier unique style. Weirdly I think beginning to except you own art is the key foundational starting point because to really develop and play you need to get some confidence. All intresting stuff. 👍

It's this kind of discursive content that I find most interesting. You're very good at scattering pearls of wisdom in your videos, Doug, and that will keep me coming back.
I believe that because social media is so fast, you as a creator can't always see the effect you have on people, because some might watch your videos weeks or even years after you posted them. I personally highly appreciate what you do here, but often I don't find the time to watch videos the moment they appear. Moreover, I am really mindful of what I choose to watch and don't consume social media like many others do - this way, if I choose to watch a video, I want to take the time to really listen to it and think it over. And I have to say that your videos are among the best I find here on TH-cam. Thanks a lot ❤

Great words of wisdom Doug. I love the fountain pen but I must tell you the biggest tip from your good self which I have found really freeing is the use of the grey fine liner for sketching as I have to be honest I am not a fan of pencils as I wasted so much time with the eraser trying to get the drawing correct. I am very confident now out sketching knowing that when I get my fountain pen out back home I can tweak mistakes.
Hi Doug, I recently found your channel and have been binge watching your videos for about a week now. As a recently retired architect I've been desperate to get back to drawing, the way I was taught, before Autodesk took over the way we design. Working quite a bit on listed buildings I always felt that hand drawn presentation drawings presented the scheme in a much more favourable light and my older clients, and conservation officers, often agreed. I enjoy photography and recently joined a club, but the last thing I wanted to do was sit in front of a pc on photoshop all day. Too much like work. Your style and outlook was like a breath of fresh air! Talk about mindfulness, using your eyes and transferring what you see into brush trokes takes you to another place. So thank you Doug and enjoy the beers!

I’m also retired from the commercial design world (graphic designer) I really struggle with creating without a client to please under a harsh deadline! I am new to your channel Doug and learning from you!
Love the channel, D.J.! I just took a brief course in watercolor (4 sessions). I'm not sure what I learned. I guess the best way of looking at one's journey is that ... practice and experiment move one forward. (And look at me saying "one" from my couch in the Bronx. )
This has really helped me a lot Doug. I’m struggling to find my own style and all my efforts seem to come out looking the same, it’s as though a style has found me instead of me finding it. Sometimes I feel like giving up. Like having a paddy and chucking it all in the bin. I often feel as though I’m just not improving. I watch all these amazing artists’ tutorials and I feel so inspired but then I look at my own stuff and it’s rubbish. But I’ve decided I’ve just got to keep plodding on, embracing every small victory and enjoying the process. Thank you for being there for all of us hopeless but optimistic wannabes :)
Thanks for you wonderful and honest comment. I know it's super frustrating when you try and try and don't feel like you are developing but trust me you are. The key for me is the enjoyment of the process. I make sure that that I set time aside and really lean into the ritual. Put on a podcast or music, male a drink and just enjoy drawing and painting. If you concentrate on the endcresult too much it will stop you getting loose and trying things. ONWARDS!!!
If you touch one person, you have done God's work. Analytics are there to hook you into producing more and a creator's form of addiction. No need. You do YOU.
Thank you - enjoyed hearing your thoughts. I LOVE sketching & painting & hate missing doing some of it every day. I like when I do something that excites me when I look at the final result BUT I love the doing of it even if the result is not exciting. It’s ALL good!
I also struggle a lot with art style, I've always have. And because I'm always jumping from one medium to other, I never get the time to mature my style in any of them, I feel. I used to feel very bad about it, but I've made peace with, through the years.
If it keeps you going and intresting then you will keep growing and learnings so you're obviously feeding your brain 👍👍...I'm suspicious of artists who just do the same thing again and again. 🤣
