    I've done the same thing, if you can't see the river it feels very safe. But those Albert Pike victims couldn't see the river either, and they were all swept away.

    • @charliegirlhikes
      @charliegirlhikes 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, you definitely can't underestimate the river...learned my lesson! RIP victims of the Albert Pike flood!

  • @cuz129
    @cuz129 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I'd say the Little Buffalo rose by about 15 feet. My neighbor filmed the bathrooms at the Hasty take out on the Buffalo half way under water. It scoured the pavement off the parking area there too. It was an Albert Pike kind of historic flood.

    • @charliegirlhikes
      @charliegirlhikes 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Wow, it definitely rose very high and did some damage.

  • @cuz129
    @cuz129 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Distance from the river is meaningless, its your elevation compared to the river. When historic rain is forecast, as it was last month, you just camped way too close to the river. You got very lucky. I'm very glad you did. Our place is less than a mile from the Buffalo and Little Buffalo rivers. But we are several hundred feet higher than the river.

    Two weeks ago, we did the whole BSA trail. BSA includes 99% of the Cedar Creek trail. We LOVED it. We've been going to Petit Jean for years and had never hiked the Cedar Creek trail. I think we somehow got it mixed up with the Cedar Falls trail and didn't realize they are different. Interesting to know that the bridge was out 6 months ago. We were there in December of 2024 and it was still out. We were able to rock hop across like you guys did. Trekking poles help. Haha. Doing the BSA Trail really opens up new options for connecting different trails in combination because the BSA links almost all the other trails around the park. Example, instead of doubling back on the Canyon trail, you can take the BSA up and out of the canyon toward Seven Hollows. You could go right when you get to Seven Hollows and do the majority of that trail, or you can go left at the junction and just go to the Seven Hollows trailhead, then across the parking to continue the BSA trail, across the road to Bear Cave, and then from Bear Cave back to Mather. We had also neglected the Bear Cave trail because it's so short, but as short as it is, it has some great scenery and views and really cool rock formations. All of the Petit Jean trails are worth doing.

      @charliegirlhikes 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

    • @charliegirlhikes
      @charliegirlhikes 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I totally understand that! The good thing about this trail is that you can still see the views without hiking the more narrow/technical parts of the trail! I would just hike as far as you are comfortable with. In some spots, I just stay focused on the trail and try to ignore the fact that I'm so close to the edge. It's a popular trail, so you can also watch the other hikers around you and see how they maneuver the trail. Definitely go check it out. You won't be disappointed even if you don't hike the entire Bluff. Thanks for watching! Happy Trails 😊

      It's definitely steep but short. As you keep walking along the top and over another waterfall, you will see where people go down off the right side of the trail to the bottom of the falls. It's wet down there, slippery, but after rain, there are other waterfalls down there also coming off the sides of the canyon. It's beautiful! I want to hike this one again soon and Pedestal Rocks.Thanks for watching!

    Looking at the date and the title...I was wondering if you were out there during the big storm. And then I was thinking about the year my dad and I stayed at some cabins near the Buffalo, and between Rush and Indian Rockhouse Trail (if I'm remembering correctly), it had dumped so much that many roads were flooded and the trail was gushing water from underneath. So I had an early respect for what a good amount of rain could do in that area. Talk about a close call. I'm surprised the people you spoke to the day before didn't bring it up.

    Oh, my...you all are amazing! You survived and kept your sense of humor. We were camping that same period north up in Missouri. Fortunately we were in a trailer on higher ground. I can't imagine wading through flood waters like that in the dark...😮

      Thank you! We did our best to stay calm and get ourselves out of there. I'm glad you were on high ground. That storm system was crazy! Thank you for watching😀

    Spectacular scenery, you should put together an independent film production and create a plot that centers around it
