Well the colorism of the queen comes from the first movie. You can't change that. It's based on the fact that Eddie Murphy is attracted to light skinned women. He has only dated, married and played against light skinned women since he became a leading man.
The teenaged daughter may be intentional but I thought it was good that are was darker because we know 9 times out of 10 in any other movie she would be light skinned especially if there is a white woman casting director. The middle child is Eddie Murphys real life daughter so the color of her skin had very little to do with her placement but maybe....
Leslie Jones a victim of colorism is complex. Leslie Jones plays loud and brash most of the time and I don't know if it's her choice or not. Maybe she was selected intentionally because of her past. The character was definitely written to be poor so if you had a lighter skin comedian play her say Tiffany Hadish I think the character would still be a stereotype. The other problem is that I can't think of very many light skinned female comics other than Wanda Sykes. The top 10 or so female comics in that age range are dark skinned Loni Love, Sheri Sheppard, Monique, Adele Givens, Sommore....then how many of them have acting chops for a major movie. Slim pickens I say...
Movies for black people with black bodies more often than not aren't made by Black people or offer Black people the opportunity to truly, accurately represent ourselves. Appreciated your analysis!
It was shocking that they were still doing colorism they made the baby mother so ghetto then Vanessa Callaway character really didn't change they didn't bring back Lisa's sister because that was colorism too trying to make dark skin women look bad and it's sad colorism
This is an American film produced by Americans starring Americans. This is a comedy like non of it makes sense. I have seen African movies where black americans where imitated in a crazy stereotypical manner sayin nah what I'm saying every two seconds and the n-word and it was supposed to be a serious movie. lol
I'm going to be honest I never thought this actually need a sequel now I put some other Eddie Murphy movies needed a sequel not this one the first one was good the second one wasn't iconic like the first one they better not try to do anything with no Harlem Nights keep it as a one movie
Hey cheyenne, loved the review. You know what really bugged me though? It feels like they could have scrapped the three daughters, said Akeem hadn't been able to have children and you'd basically end up with the same story. Can't help but think they did the elder daughter so dirty😂😂 her story line went nowheere.
When making a movie like this, they need to GET RID OF THE WEAVES BRA! All that this shows is that even at their highest, black people still have aspirations to be something they're not.
you have made a mistake Prince Hakeem son Lavelle is not light skin he is brown skin I watched the movie and he has the same complexion as I do so he is brown skin not light skin
Hi, I saw your video about the communication and media degree. I wanted to ask you, to prepare myself better for research and statistic what could I study?
so did anyone else catch the colourism?
What's colourism?

I had no idea that uppity had that history, thank you!
We should stop talking about colorism it not that deep to me
Great review and analysts! Good call out on the son becoming privileged and killing the character development

Coming 2 America 💕
I really don’t think there should’ve been a second movie.
