เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 24 เม.ย. 2017
We are Kay and Gee, an adventurous couple that loves the ocean and traveling the world meeting new people. We finally had enough of the hamster wheel so we sold everything to sail around the world. The crazy thing is we did this without a ton of sailing experience but didn’t want to wait until retirement to figure it all out. We are excited to share our experiences and hope you will join us on our adventures!
We love mountain biking so much we intend to bring our bikes on board. Our hope is to ride trails wherever they exist along our travels. Plus they will make great transportation!

46. Scenes From Las Palmas, Gran Canaria
We present a few scenes from the very pleasant, standard jumping off spot for the Caribbean - Las Palmas, Gran Canaria before our weather window opens and we head out. Get to know Max, our First Mate, watch Kay push a grocery cart through a shopping mall, and Gee asks a few questions. Our journey will take us from Greece to Italy to Spain then to the Caribbean, before turning north to Florida.

Solving our Anchor Dragging Blues + Mantus Anchor Swivel
มุมมอง 7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This How-to video illustrates how we think we’ve solved most of the anchor dragging problems we have experienced over the last several months. Regardless of the type of sea floor we’ve anchored in, we typically start to drag our anchor when the wind gets up above 22 knots. We’ve had to re-anchor several times in one night, which has caused a lot of stress and anxiety for us. Fortunately, we thi...
Splice Your Own Double Braid Dock Lines
มุมมอง 28K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This How-to video demonstrates how we spliced our own dock or mooring lines from 16mm double-braided line. Our dock lines were getting pretty worn so we bought 26 meters of 16mm black double braided line in bulk, which we cut in half giving us two 13 meter lines. After splicing an eye loop and whipping the ends, we saved a bunch of money and had a lot of fun making our own custom dock/mooring l...

Perfect explained, thanks for this. Splicing is never getting old.
The best solution to your dragging problem is to drop that garbage plow anchor to the bottom of the sea floor with no line attached, leave it there and go get a good anchor. 1) You have the worst anchor. 2) Your worst anchor is too small. 3) You dont have enough scope out. 4) You mis calculated the scope. 5) Your dual anchor idea is absurd. Just get 1 correct anchor. 5) Why is someone who dont know how to anchor, giving anchoring instructions?
Still a good video
We really appreciate your positive comments on the video. It’s great to hear it is so useful!! Cheers.
I would throw that chain away for year’s ago, But very impressed by the Swivel, simple and easy to maintain
invest money in a good anchor , like Rocna
I agree. there are a lot of good videos but this is my favorite. I really like the fact that you take a moment at each step and lay it all down on the table and show where we are.
Friendly reminder to all reading/watching that scope must be calculated from the anchor roller to the seafloor, and account for tides. It is *not* to be calculated with water depth alone. Hypothetical example: If your roller is 5ft off the water, and the water is 5ft deep , your 10:1 scope would be 10x10 = 100ft rode (not 5x10 = 50ft as you'd incorrectly calculate with water depth alone. We're on a Lipari 41 and have a 33kg/73lb Rocna Vulcan we've quite liked. The 44lb Delta the boat came with dragged.
Delta anchors are the worst ever made mate, also use 7 to 1 scope, most of your video has made something very simple over complicated , this was hard to watch
Why do you drag? 1. Multihulls have both more windage and swing than monos, therefore need increased anchor size and scope. You should be dropping a 33kg minimum. 2. 3:1 is only for light wind lunch stops, 4:1 for settled weather overnight in good holding and 5:1 minimum or anything questionable. 3. Yes, most charter boats have a delta anchor, not because it's good but because they are cheap. 4. Invest in one of the proven anchors showing good resetting after tripping, the rocnas, spade and mantus. I love my rocna vulcan because it performs very well, launches by itself easily and doesn't interfere with the bowsprit extension for the code zero. Using a tandem anchor setup like you present is for storm conditions, if you have to resort to this for normal season conditions then your anchor setup is grossly deficient. I don't want to be downwind of you when they trip, foul then can't be brought up at 4am in a cloudburst. I have been cruising over 25 years, used CQR, danforth, delta, bruce, spade, and rocna. I use the rocna for everyday AND storms, and have used a tandem setup in storms. The old delta I keep onboard is best for a sacrificial anchor if I'm staying in a mangrove bay for a whole season and don't want to bring it back onboard after months of growth is on it.
All the money they spent on buying two garbage anchors, they could have bought one good one.
If you have two anchors down on one rode, if the weather turns bad at night and you need to retrieve this ugly mess, you will not be able to. You need to be able to just pull it up and reset, or get out of there. If you do use two anchors they must be on separate rodes and you should be ready to ditch one (with buoy) and retrieve at a later time. Big anchor, long scope.
Dude, #1, ditch the Delta Anchor, Get a Mantus, or Rocna type. Far Better Next, use more scope, 5 to one extreme minimum. You love to hear the anchor alarm, you'd not want to drag and not hear it. Please take this video down, tour advice is dangerous.
Thank you so much for a calm straight forward explanation! I braided 4 eye splices into polypropylene tow rope and they worked perfectly. I got better and faster as I repeated your instructions. I also really like the Selma find set!
Great video, I had trouble getting the core back through the neck area and out the outer sleeve, so I tapered the inner core and came out closer to the neck and it worked great.
Two friends are considering doing island hopping in croatia and maybe goign to to greece. They are absolute beginnners. Going by your experince would you say that's a good idea?
Beautiful 👍
Excellent video. A couple more tips. I wear sailing gloves when splicing as I’m a bit lean and can get friction burns when milking the rope. And I use a rubber hammer to soften the junctions as I work. Not so much for this simple splice. But can help when everything gets tight.
And…..love your cat 🐈
Of all the splicing TH-cams, this is by far the best. Hands down.
Your anchor is way too damn small for that boat. That's your problem.
Great Job Guys, we hope to meet you someday x
Delta anchors perform poorly. All other modern anchors work well. Decide what size anchor you would want for a storm anchor. But that and put it on your bow as your main anchor. I have a 60ft 18 ton monohull. I have an 80kg anchor. I never drag. I sleep like a baby. I never anchor with two anchors, I have no anchor swivel and still don't know what they achieve. Anchoring is simple. Big anchor, lots of chain. In shallower water your 3-5 X depth is not enough. In very deep water you can get away with 2 -3 X depth. In 5m of water I will use 40m of chain. I have successfully anchored in 40m with 100m of chain in 40 knots.
Hi we enjoyed your video and wondering what litter do you use for your Cat ginger? Thanks
Happy New Year!! We wish we could recommend a brand but we bought what we could find in each country. Always different!
Typically quite a good cruising boat with a reasonable cruising speed. Better than a Lagoon. FYI I do own and Orana. Cheers
I just came across your channel. Yes very familiar with Almyra Shipyard. In fact we were the Orana named Rukus which was to your port against the house wall with coppercoat. Been there 3 years now and true you have to work hard to find local contacts/ trades. Happy sailing
We remember the coppercoat catamaran!! All the best to you and happy sailing 😀
The one thing cat owners always forget is the huge windage your boat has. You are riding on top of the water and have the same size as two mono hulls. You might watch the dozens of videos put out by s/v Panope, who tests anchors using very scientific methods. But the first thing you said about anchoring at 3-1 or 5-1 told me most of the reason you are dragging. Your scope should be 7-1 overnite and if it blows hard go out to 10-1. I'm not kidding here, a three to one is only for a brief stop for lunch not an overnight stay. Another thing I have noticed is that chain size makes a big difference, keeps the pull on the bottom. I know you cat guys are always worried about weight but I like to sleep at night when on the hook so which do you prefer? Switch to a rocna Vulcan, get some heavier chain, let out seven to one and sleep peacefully.
Agreed. We have a 65# Mantus and we go no less than 7-1 and if wind is above 30kts we go 10-1 to 12-1. We ditched our poorly performing Delta within a couple of weeks. We have never dragged our Mantus...ever. I would not ever use 2 anchors like this unless it is 100% forecast to be from one direction and not clocking/veering and the 2 anchors would be in V at the end of the rode, but the wind would have to be over 50kts to consider that. We have held our boat, plus a Leopard 45 Cat which dragged and ended up T-boned on our hulls after he dragged anchor. Our 65# held both boats in 20+kts for 30mins and eventually I pulled it free with engines to get him off my bow.
Ore a Spade Anchor
Sorry folks this is not the answer. Go heavy, go long. Most Med yachts try to minimise the weight of their anchor and chain for cost and convenience. False economy, believe me. Get the best anchor and one size up chain and you'll never drag again.
I have seen more and more video's of the Delta's not holding. I too had the same issue and switched over to the Mantus anchor and have not yet had any negative issue with it. It holds faster and has not pulled free so far. I tried heavier Delta's and while they did help, still they would pull out in certain conditions. Much easier with one anchor I think if you ever get tired of this method, give one a try.
watch sailing wisdom....
interesting video, thanks for sharing. i have been struggling with making my new dock lines. trying to follow a different method but its a bit different and doesnt allow me to get the fid through. The fid gets stuck near the end. Looking forward to trying this method.
Excellent video. Best one I’ve watched for making my own line. Bonus points for adding cat footage!
Thanks a bunch for your comment, glad it helped!
100's of thousands of people dying through Covid. Put into perspective your ''issues'' of bureaucracy, language, visas etc. Really don't even register when the planet is going through a ''serious'' real life issue.
Be blessed
Brilliantly instructed.
Your demonstration and explanation on this splice is the most practical I could find on TH-cam. Thank You
Glad it was helpful!
Wrong not automated, it's automatic identification system.
Very risky if the wind is blowing stronger to your boat. It might damaged the sides against another boats.
It very hard now cause you are just two left on the yatch.. I hope you can get better people who can help you with all the maneuverings of the yatch.. Lucky you catches tuna fish.
Experience and knowledge of yatch maneuvering needs more time to do before getting better sailing on the Ocean my friends..Menorca is a tourist destination.
It was fun /haunting to come across your videos…….. I was about 3 to four weeks behind you I sailed out of Kilada Greece. I battled the same bashing you experienced in fact we stayed in Palermo for 10 days waiting for weather. In fact in your video it looked like you guys where at marina Galizzi in Palermo that’s where we hid from the weather. Long story short I had to make crew changes when we got to Spain so I chose to haul out and fly home. In January. We are going back this august and pic up where we left off and get our boat home to the states. Best wishes I just subscribed Gary and Ena S/V Divergent
That was such a crazy time!! We were at Galizza for a few days and met a guy who’s boat was struck by lightning in that marina a couple days before we got there. The weather was relentless the entire trip. We wish you all the best in August!
What do you think about Leopard 45 ?
WTH! Did I just see that you put your boat for sale??? Why??
Where have you guys been?
The fake voice over at the end was hilarious.
You are in the next charter-territory that I'm targeting. I'm learning from those ahead of me...!!
Glad we could help. Good luck to you!
Not a water baby but would love being stranded in my beloved Minorca (menorca), spent many a happy hour in Mahon (mao) not Ma-hone hahaha. Gotta love our different languages lol, fair winds and safe sailing. And you hit my most fave Lidl in Mahon, spent much peseta's there lol.
We loved it there. Just wish we could have spent time there during the summer! I knew I would mess up the pronunciations of the islands. Darn it! Funny you know the Lidl market too🤣 I think we know where every Lidl is in the Med.
So beautiful. Nature heals us. I hope you are all doing well and staying safe!
Hello Blackbird, I bought a Foutaine Pajot Elba45. Delivery in May 2022. I wonder about the sails. Do you think it would be useful to install a small genoa or a special sail for heavy weather? We see this on catamarans over 45 feet, and as we are going on a long trip, I think it could be very useful. Your opinion as a sailor please? thanks in advance. Good sailing. Best regards. Christophe.
We are new to sailing so cannot give advice based on experience. We can tell you we upgraded our sail to one more appropriate for off shore and for crossing the Atlantic. We purchased a Doyle sail with dyneema.
@@sailingblackbird922 oki thank you. Good sailing.
Check out let’s dance sailing for the best advice
Marina fees in Italy - big???
I would say higher than Spain and slightly less than Greece.
so many idiots out there....if you hit something at least you stop and check if all is ok or not!
We would have expected them to stop too! Strange.
Trust is good but control better ;-) That impeller issue could have cost you but good you had a spare!
How did you decide on that particular water maker? Are those barnacles on the transducer? If so, how do you clean it? Did you guys consider crossing with the ARC and, if so, why did you choose not to? Which Caribbean island will you be heading towards? Have fun!
