What's up orchids?
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 30 ธ.ค. 2020
Hello orchid fans, what's up?
Thank you for visiting my channel. Here you will find videos about how I grow my orchids in my living room. I live in Scotland, so the climate is quite humid all year round, and we don't have very high temperatures during summer. So why not tag along to see how I accommodate this climate when caring for my plants?
I hope you will find my videos useful and entertaining. If you have any questions or would like to see specific content on my channel, please feel free to reach out to me via comments on the videos or via email: whatsuporchids@gmail.com
Cheers, Gintare

Hi! How was your transition process into LECA? When did you pot it? After bloom? How is it doing in LECA longterm?
Ж У Т Ь
Only just got one..hope I will keep mine alive, and well,
When you pot in pure Leica how often are you watering?
Really depends on quality of leca and how well it wicks the water up. Mine wasn't very good, so it dried up quite quickly and also retained a lot of salts from fertiliser, so needed a lot of flushing... I transitioned all my orchids back into bark as it seemed to work better for me
@@Whatsuporchids thank you so much for the reply. I think I'll stick to bark/moss.
Hi Gintare, I have been following you for years, and hope that you will continue to provide updates from time to time! Wishing you and family all the best. (My long comment got erased, so I’ll have to repost it later when I have more time.)
Hi Kevin, I just had a baby so life is a bit crazy at the moment! 😅 Hopefully I'll get some time to do some videos, I've still got all the orchids that I showed in the last video 👍 Sorry to hear your last comment got erased, TH-cam seem to be doing that a lot lately...
@@Whatsuporchids Congratulations… what an exciting time! You probably will not sleep much now, so the videos will need to take a back-seat. I’m glad that your orchids are surviving the environmental change. :) I actually found with my various indoor orchids that they grew more and larger leaves with a little less light intensity while using the same fertilizer concentration.
Nice work,😊😊😊❤❤❤
I dont see Leca sell in local nursery
Not all nurseries sell it, you might be able to find it online for purchase but be careful, there are so many types and sizes, not all are easy to work with...
@@Whatsuporchids / thanks.
You are very knowledgeable on growing orchids. The microfiber wick system is a great idea.
I just repot to new bigger pot -
What is the name of number 2 orcid you water? Kindly Lars 😀
That is Oeoceoclades spatuliphera, some people call it the Snake orchid due to the foliage colours 😊
I just cemented a 2 x 2 inch 12 foot cedar pole into a planter. I like your idea, too. How did it work out for you? Did the vanilla climb it? I used some plant Velcro to wrap my vanilla orchid vine to try to get it to attach itself.
Unfortunately my vanilla didn't make it, the roots rotted off and it went downhill from there... But when I took this pole apart, it had some moisture all the way through which means it did the job I was hoping for 👍

Do U still have a Vanilla orchid?
Unfortunately I lost it... 🥲
y to hear that,
so sorry to hear that
I have grown this specie for about 18months. It was in a 75mm square, deep black plastic pot and was potted in small Orchiata bark. I have kept it in the original bark hanging it on a wire mesh close to the fan. Just had a look and there is clean larger growth. Also the roots are establishing throughout the media to the base and beyond. I water every day in Summer and two maybe three times a week now in November. My Winter temps 16-24C Summer much warmer. Hope you get it going it is such a pretty plant
Unfortunately mine didn't make it... I tried so many different set ups with it and it was just going downhill until it collapsed completely... 🥲
@@Whatsuporchids sorry to hear that. We cannot always win with plants I have lost my share as well. A space is always an opportunity 🙂
Having a lamp over them is a super good idea. I downsized also and now what I have look beautiful and you can enjoy each one not a jungle over every table. I live in a tropical island and my conditions are perfect for outside grow so I placed them all outside and I gave many away and kept the ones I really like. I feel I freed myself of orchid slavery🤣🤣🤣🤣 I admit is not easy controlling oneself when it comes to orchids. If your plants don’t survive just replaced them with orchids suitable for lower light and cooler temps. I also decided to grow only compacts and mini orchids only kept five large cattleyas and I am so so happy every now is so tidy and just beautiful.
I'm the same, I enjoy my orchids a lot more now 🥳
The mysterious plant is an anthurium, I believe.
Thank you! I'll need to look up how to take care of it 😅
@Whatsuporchids it should not ve an issue, they're quite easy going. Interesting to see how your collection shrank and what you selected. It for the best, your plants look great:)
Very nice......I hope they will all do well for you. I lost some interest when the energy price went out of control......but I'm slowly regaining interest but not purchasing any more plants....take care, Ed.
That angraecum aloifolium is absolutely gorgeous, I'd never seen one!
Understandable, my collection is getting a bit out of hand (again) but I can still manage them 😁I'm even building a new grow room 🤣
I saw a few of your recent videos, your collection is impressive! Hope the new grow room fits all your plants in 👍
@@Whatsuporchids It better It's the last bit of the house I can use 🤣
Good to see you back. I totally understand the downsizing. I just gave away a few of my Hoyas, just too many plants to look after. I am keeping all of my orchids. ❤. Looking forward to seeing your next videos.
I'm actually really enjoying the smaller collection and that my orchids are part of the living room rather than a lab experiment 😅
Why do you want to get rid of the small pseudobulbs?
They just take up space and don't really serve any purpose when you have big plump mature pseudobulbs on a healthy plant
I just repot to a bigger pot ….
Why did you use Mecca and not bark or moss
I was trying out inorganic media at the time. I currently have it potted in bark, it's doing great
I’m so glad to find your channel! I live in a humid and cold-ish climate as well and made a mistake like you to follow Miss Orchid Girl’s routine to add sphagnum moss… I was so surprised when my orchid isn’t dry for 3 weeks and got fungus gnats which live everywhere where I’m at. So thank you for providing a different perspective and sharing your experience. I grow in bark and also started adding charcoal into the center of the pot to keep it dryer and perlite. I only add a strand or two of sphagnum into the large air pockets and only near the walls of the pot to keep the outer roots moister longer. I also alter the amount of water. I soak some orchids and I only drip a spoon of water to others depending on the size of the pot and medium. Please keep posting, I love seeing what works for you
Thank you Mariah, if you check out my later videos, you'll see I made a shelf with lights and fans, that is working really well and helping to dry the pots out quicker 👍
Nice.
Thank you for the video 😊
That looks a lot like my "Comet Valley Orange Star" 😁
It probably looks like 20 hybrids, they seem all the same! 😂
@@Whatsuporchids Just give it a tag no one will ever know the difference 😁
Yeah, for sure! 😅
OMG it's variegated. I have a huge crush on variegated irchids so I shoud definitely find one like yours. <3
I love variegated orchids too, they look so pretty even when not in bloom 🥰
Now I can finally update the tag on mine 😁lost it years ago
Have you got this one too? 👍
@@Whatsuporchids Yes but it needs a lot of tlc before it looks anything like yours 😁 It needs a cooler place then what I have now, so does the other Neo
Lovely! Waiting for my yellow one to bloom (yes, yellow) although I like that "original" more lol. What average temperature does it have? TIA
Yellow sounds amazing, hope it looks good when opens up! I wasn't providing anything special to this one for blooming, same temperature as when in growth mode but my average temperatures are 18-22C
@@Whatsuporchids Thanks! The Lepidum is my oldest dream in terms of orchids hahaha, so I bought it immediately once I was offered it. It is not usual the retailers to have it here in Argentina since the whether it´s too cold in winter, but I got the orchids place to stay in constant 20 C , so I hope some results lol. This yellow one kinda of brilliant white in fact looks fascinating too! Will let you know if she blooms.🥰🥰
@@raulcollado9419 I actually passer mine to my friend and no longer have it, unfortunately the long rhizomes mean that they need a lot of space and since I grow inside, that's a challenge, so I had to give it up. But it grew really well and was constantly expanding and blooming for me, quite a rewarding plant. The blooms don't last long though, a few days and they're gone... 😅
Very sweet young falcatas! I wonder if you give it some heat for summer and then colder for winter if that would get it to bloom! Just be careful when it’s cold that it’s not wet at the same time! Good luck, hope you get blooms in the future!
Thank you for advice, I'll see what I can do! ❤️
Ooh looking lovely! Unusual to see coplanting - i like your approach. Fingers crossed you grow a third fan soon.
Agree with you on the community potting. As long as all the orchid’s require the same care and as you said are not “sick” they will be fine. Both of your ladies look great 👍 🌸
Thank you Trish, they both seem to be loving each other's company 😊
looking good.
I didn't know you were in Scottland, definitely more challenging of a climate, but indoors we make it work. Your set up looks good. Neo looking great :)
Thank you Nicole! Yeah, Scottish climate is definitely not suitable for growing orchids but you're right, we can create any climate inside! 👍😉❤️
Great video, thanks for sharing. Your neo kogo funeral has grown a lot, you're doing well! I think she needs to be bigger to flower for you. Thanks for sharing and happy growing
Thanks Mary, I'm enjoying this little plant 🥰
Very healthy Dendrobium orchids . I ❤️ Dendrobium orchid . Easy care . For me I don’t split until they getting bigger plant .
Its endemic of Phillipines. What a unique orchid!
May i ask where you are from? Your accent sounds like it could be from the Shetland Islands or Scandinavia or even mainland Scotland. Im intrigued! Thanks for this video as well!
Hello, I live in Scotland but I'm from Lithuania originally 😊
@@Whatsuporchids That makes a lot of sense!
Hi Gintare, I like your logic on the needs for these plants. :) I hope that the new potting mix works! Sometimes, I’ll empty an orchid pot after a few days to see how a new mix is drying and then make adjustments, if needed. Please provide an update later for these plants.
Such a beautiful color.
Isn't it great getting an orchid that nobody else has and you have to muddle through all the work alone 😁
Totally, I have no idea how to take care of it 😂

I just bough a little Psychopsis krameriana and I hope it will do well in my care. Where did you get that little fan?
They like to rot the new growths quickly, so if you are careful when watering, it will do well for you 👍 these fans are PC ventilating fans, I just bought them on eBay. They are quite good, provide air movement for the shelf that is not too much but I do need a fan per shelf as they are not strong enough to move the air too far
@@Whatsuporchids Thanks for the tip 🙏 PC ventilating fans? That's genius!
Yeah, works really well 😊
I like it and am going to try that with my vanilla orchid. its pretty dry here to so constant misting is needed but that seems like a better idea
Yeah, and it does actually hold the moisture quite well but I also mist the pole from time to time to keep it going 👍
Has your care advice changed for this orchid at all? :)
Mine is not doing too well, so I'm maybe not the best to give advise 😅 but I think it needs a lot of water as the leaves just crinkle up otherwise...
@What's up orchids? Thank you for replying, I actually got one of these from the same nursery yours is from today :) I'm tempted to water it immediately now, haha! There sure is some mixed information out there. Hopefully she'll be okay, such a pretty orchid!
