Flying helicopters all over North America. Join me as I share helicopter insights as well as the beauty of glaciers, icebergs, mountain peaks, alpine lakes, rainbows and waterfalls. I'm an 8000 hour commercial helicopter pilot and spent the majority of my career flying mountains, precision long lining and technical landings. I specialize in ferry flights and advanced training for mountain flying and off airport landings.
Flying South in the Freedom Machine. From Alaska to California
Join me as I'm flying this little Robinson R44 helicopter from Alaska to Southern California where I'll be dropping it off for the first 12 year/ 2200 hour overhaul at the factory. Along the way, I'm sharing flying insights, stories and more. Mike is flying the Carbon Cub "Orange Crush" so you'll hear us both on the radio.
In this episode, I share a little mountain flying basics, the history of this helicopter, a bit about the overhaul process, and towards the end I made a circle rainbow for you, called Pilot's Glory, or Brocken Spectre. I hope you enjoy!

Based out of Valdez Alaska, we explore the vast beauty of of these mountains and glaciers by helicopter. Today's flight is in the Bell505 helicopter, the #CandyCaneCopter. We spent a few hours exploring a mountain ridge goat trail and now it's time to fly back to base. Come along with us and enjoy the views and the banter as we are always in search of new landing spots and glacier caves to expl...

Raw Alaskan beauty!!!
This is cool. 😎
Great color scheme on that helicopter😁👍the only thing cooler there a helicopter would have to be a flying saucer. I'm into the ufo scene and all that stuff iv watched everything Bob Lazar has been on and he said that flying saucers are in a distortion and use gravity amplifiers to create gravity that the ship basically falls towards and because they are in that distortion they feel no G-forces at all its like your moving your environment around you not you moving around your environment if that's true I probably wouldn't get motion sickness lol and how cool would that be.
Was I the only one terrified that snow she landed on would give way?
Nice is there a name for that like crab walking ? I love practicing this with my drone its got to be so cool actually being in the craft damn motion sickness smh.
I know it's old n alot ppl use it...but when I flew Red Bull I grew up with vanilla ice!!.. y are u so gorgoeus😅
I don't know crap about my phone vs a garmin.. ru u 4-5 seater? Is this ur occupation tours. ? If so.. y only 1 passenger??
R-44 is my second favorite civilian helo (bell 407 on top) such a pretty little airframe!
Illegals can come in, but don't bring an items across
So badass! I can't imagine the euphoria of this!
Gotta love Heli Dancing 💃 🕺
Those were human drones, a pretty rare sighting up until recently
👽😅
Do you still have the 505?
Sure do!
@@HeliPilotLeigh Hey, thanks for the reply. Since seeing a couple of your videos, I am now tormenting myself. I am seriously considering the MD500. I never considered the 505 until seeing your explanations. Started looking closer. That G1000 would make my life so much easier. But still, I have always like the 500. My time has been in the 206 but not interested in owning one again. My use is only me, occasionally one other, flying mostly in Florida. So... what's your take on the MD500 experiences you've had?
Would you still take an R44 again after flying the Bell 505 for personal use? Thanks for the vids and experience
Yes, I have both! Love both!
Y’all are having too much fun.
As much as possible, thank you 😊
NO WAY THAT WAS AWESOME 😀👍. Reminds me of the movie Blue Thunder at the end when he rolls Blue Thunder to get behind the bad guy at the end.
Haha totally! This is a course reversal with a flip…totally get behind the bad guy😆
@HeliPilotLeigh Have a FANTASTIC HOLIDAY if you see Santa up there say hi for me lol 👋🎅
Oh yeah! That totally clears up the previous video in which you stated that "I've got two hours of fuel, and I'll be gone three hours..." then you give a link to this video of a helicopter sitting on a mountain top... And it's just...sitting there. It's all prefect........hana!
🤣
I know it's a tough one for fixed wing pilots to comprehend...lol But the type of flying that I do is more about the landing than the flying...I'll typically do 2 or 3 landings and shut downs out in the mountains in that 3 hour time. And use less than an hour of fuel. Think of it as a Round Robin flight plan...is that speaking your language?
Does that put a lot of strain on the helicopter? Sorry if that's a silly question
Not a silly question at all. The owner/pilot of this one is super techy and has sensors all over it to read the actual loads. This rotorhead can handle it very well, and he mostly does all positive G manuevers. I'll try to find a video that shows my hair stays perfectly down and in place.
Freedom machine is right! 🚁 ❤
🚁💃🏼
You sure love that wild Danger 🤔 You should take on the call sign "Danger Zone "🚁 😂
LOL this kind of flying is definitely not for everyone. I could do this all day every day...just absolutely love it🥰
I saw that once..l thought they were all done..
I can imagine 😅
There are a few aerobatic helicopter pilots out there performing regularly. It never gets old watching it!
Flew a Beaver from Germany to just out side Liverpool so they had to send customs guy from Heathrow .They were mad that we flew a Beaver over the channel but how else could we do it? He searched everything and wanted to know what the little bottle of white stuff was in the tool box I said Crisco for jet lube I don't think he believed me.I told him to buzz off.
Mad for flying over the channel...makes no sense. Glad you set him straight...lol
🗣📢 FREEDOM MACHINE‼️🙌🏾 🚁
Yessss🚁
To fly is heavenly to hover divine. Rotary wing aviation there is simply no substitute. The CH-53 also barrel rolls. FLY NAVY!!!
You know it! I can only imagine the thrill of a CH-53, just incredible, thank you!
In 1997 I was an eyewitness to the crash of a Danish Navy helicopter during an air show in Poland in Góraszka. Looking at the flight path of the helicopter as it descended towards the ground I said to a stranger standing next to me: it will hit the ground. 3 seconds later the helicopter had no blades, was lying on its side and smoking. Since then I have been skeptical about doing acrobatics in this type of aircraft. Too many variables.
That's awful. Traumatic to witness, I can only imagine.
That’s crazy. Good fun!🇺🇸🪂
So fun!
When my Dad got his t34 ( ghost squadron) said Zeros at 3 oclock... scared shit outa me .. I was 12.. my diance died when her / mine daughter at 12 died of cancer ( 3 types ) I was always asked to do a loop for her 16th birthday.... u got coolest step dad in world!! Probably cus I spoiled her with a mint 1986 Toyota mr2 .... down payment on a copter! .. but a 2 seater.. dou u fly 2 seater or 4-5 seater? .. is this ur business guiding?
I'm so sorry for your loss Jon. I fly a 2 seater plane, and a few different 4,5,6 seater helicopters. Flew a 2 seater helicopter when I did my training and instructing, but haven't been in an R22 for 20 years.
Our crew had a rare day off once in the 90s so we decided to grab a company van and drive up to a glacier that we’d heard about by the million dollar bridge. As we’re standing there taking it in one of the guys said “It’d be cool if a chunk just fell off right now”. About 20 seconds later a Massive chunk fell and everyone was jaw dropped laughing. It disappeared for a bit, reemerged, twisted and bobbed. The water swole and waves started lapping by our feet. That’s about the time we all instantly agreed to leave. 😆 Nature is scarily amazing.
lol, great story, thanks for sharing! I love that spot in front of Childs Glacier. So cool you got to experience it before the road got washed away. Now it's only accessible by helicopter, bush plane or jet boat. The campground is still there and the bridge still fully functioning, but very few people can get there.
I'll take your word for it...
🙃
Great vid and history to current! Do I understand down for rebuilt mtc for about a year? If so, whatcha going to do for a lifting job?
Thanks! Yup, I was budgeting a year, but Robinson says it will be ready for spring to fly it back to Alaska for summer. I've got a Bell 505 in the mean time. When I've done overhauls before, it's just a matter of timing it out and having enough helicopters on the certificate to get the jobs done. Helicopter business is as dynamic as they come...lol.
Between the R44 and R66, which one was easier to fly?
Such a FUN video!! I've wondered about mountain turbulence for you (us mountain flying, fixed wing guys fear it). Don't get "burbbelized" 😆 This is one of my very favorite videos; as you talk about your Freedom machine, what a joy she's been and many of the things you've done with her! I LOVE the stories! (It would be a KILLER commercial for Robinson! You actually, completely, changed my perception of them!) Nicely done!
Wow, Thank you! And I'm especially glad you enjoyed this one as I've got a lot more to talk about and share on this trip. And so happy to help change your perspective on the Robinson. It's honestly an incredible machine, and the fact that it is actually affordable (relative to other helicopters) means there are a lot of entry level pilots flying them...which unfortunately has led to an unwarranted bad reputation for the machine.
Possible, yes. Wise, no.
😁😆
which model craft is this? I love how smooth that roll was! Red Bull isk
BO105
I wouldn’t say “ I could die happy now” while im still in the air.
😁😆
Meshershmitt yeah?!? Fixed mast. Some video of a R44 trying that without the positive G loading...... didn't go as well...Just Sayin Nice - Owen Wilson from Starsky and Hutch movie viicw: i like your moves! So what did your instructir say after that dare?! LoL 😂😮
Bingo...'tis the one and only Bölkow
I would feel much safer in the Bell.
I've got a bit of time in both, and definitely feel more solid in the 505. And I prefer flying the 44 over the 66.
I think?😳

Being a pilot seems like such a neat thing to be able to do. Even if you dont do it professionally and are just a hobby pilot. Obviously, it's an expensive hobby, but still, i wish i wouldve pursued it.
Airplanes yes, but for helicopters I wouldn’t recommend for anyone to pursue it unless for career.
What a beautiful day for it 🌞 🚁
Sure was! Thanks!
Helicopters and pilots are super awesome 😎

i fly RC helis and have wonder if they could be scaled up in something like single seat aerobatic heli baicly heli version of an Edge 540, with rigid rotor head and very stiff blades
I bet they could...think I've even seen some in action!
