For accessibility reasons, if you're having links open in a new tab or window, you should at the very least warn viewers so they know what to expect. It's no longer the standard to open outgoing links in a new tab - simply because technology has changed and more people are accessing websites on their phones and it's more user-friendly to open them on the same tab/page. (I equate this to still putting two spaces after a period, which is a practice that was carried over from the typewriter days.) If a user wants to open a link on a new page, they can choose to do so on their own: - with a mouse, they right-click and choose to open in a new tab or window - on mobile, touch and hold the link to do the same Personal preference is not a good enough reason to operate a certain way - especially since libraries will soon be required by law to follow Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) - more specifics can be found at www.ada.gov/law-and-regs/regulations/title-ii-2010-regulations/#-35200-requirements-for-web-and-mobile-accessibility.
Could not love this more!!❣Thank you so much for doing the work and sharing! Super useful.
Agreed! I went down a data rabbit hole when I saw it in my email last week!
Thank you for bringing the LibraryAware study to our attention. It's great to finally have true library benchmarks to use. We do watch our email marketing stats every month. I've found by focusing more effort on the subject line and including emojis in the subject line helps to increase open rates. And as noted in the tips at the bottom of the report, thinking of your "register" or "Signup" buttons as a call to action and changing the wording so it's in the first person. For example. instead of register say, Yes. Sign me up. That has really helped our click-throughs and registrations for our programs.
I am surprised at people's strong opinions on the subject! I am a fan of opening new tabs when possible.
I strongly dislike having every link open a new tab, particularly within a site -- and I actively avoid sites that do this. I agree with other comments about a cluttered desktop, slowing down load time, and above all, ACCESSIBILITY concerns! The only time I prefer to have a new tab open is when it's directing to a completely different website (for example, library website to a community partner's website).
I strongly prefer NOT to have links open in new tabs, unless it's going to a page outside of our website. I hate a cluttered browser and that's what the back button is for!
I loved this book! Love love loved it. Yes, it’s complicated but when everything comes together at the end, it’s so worth it. I listened to the audiobook (and did a lot of rewinding) during my morning commutes but I plan to go back and read it.
This is one of my pet peeves too, Angela! I always set the target for any link to be a new tab when I'm creating content.
We are in the process of a website redevelopment, and I raised this question with the web developer early on. We currently have our site set up this way, but the developer is recommending links on the new site should direct away from our site. Not only is it an accessibility issue, but with more and more users accessing websites through mobile devices, having additional "tabs" open on a mobile browser can cause everything on the phone or tablet to slow way down. I, personally, agree with not directing away from our site, but I am also the kind of person who starts her day by opening 10 tabs on my browser, so . . . 🤣🤣🤣
I strongly prefer opening into a new tab but I know my preferences aren't enough to justify a policy, so I appreciate Angela's caveats. I'm mostly worried about how this feature would affect a website's accessibility.
Definitely open in a new tab. I'm easily distracted and like to click on links and check them out and have had issues with getting back to the original website I was reading/visiting. Opening in a new link gives me the option to close the window and go back to what I first reading. It also gives me the option to go back to the original webpage and keep reading then look at the links I've clicked for new information.
New tabs drive me crazy because I'm forever going to another website having to shut them down! I guess I just can't stand clutter and consider this clutter!📚📚📚
Milwaukee Public Library is so deserving!
Our Patron Code of Conduct Policy covers our social media space as well. We can post it if someone gets out of hand online explaining why they might be blocked. etc.
I love to hear that you do the same things I recommend to others (and practice myself) in regards to mistakes.
Thank you ❤

Dear Angela, not every book is right for every person as you are detailing in your book review. I am glad you decided not to continue reading the book for there are far too many other stories deserving of your attention and engagement. However, it does not mean the story was impaired or in need of revision with less characters to keep track of. It just means that McBride's story was not right for you at this time. A suggestion in the future is to learn more about the auhor whose book you are reading. This background provides some insight for understanding the 'story' behind the story. Check out these interviews anout the book with the author at: th-cam.com/video/Za0583ePSe4/w-d-xo.html And th-cam.com/video/HAmVJCH9BW8/w-d-xo.html Happy Reading!
I was at the Eugene Airport October 22 and had the short story dispenser generate a local poem for me. What a wonderful idea! And it was a great poem.
I love the short story dispenser! Thanks for sharing that. Great job Eugene Public Library and Foundation!

How do you know it sucks if you don't finish the book?
You should have finished the book. The weaving of the characters is what makes the book interesting and complex. It demonstrates how the complexities of our life develop create opportunities for love and doing good in the world.
Thanks for the sign policy nudge. It helps to point at a policy. Folks are so well intentioned with their signs. It's visual clutter for our students and generally people don't read signs.
I was on vacation last week, so I'm behind. We have a 2-staff marketing team and we both work on the eNews. Would you recommend having a photo of us with our names?
If you want to do that, absolutely! I think that's a really wonderful way to put a face to the work you do for your emails. Can you share one with me? My email is ahursh@ebsco.com.
Yes - it's sprawling, and I loved it anyway. Some enjoyed it - others shared your critique. Good thing we all get to choose what we read!
We recognize the need for a signage policies/guidelines but haven't gotten there, yet. Working on it.
As always, you have a way of painting a clear path forward while acknowledging pain points and offering easy ways to improve communications. Thank you!
I do this, and I'm sure I learned it from you, Angela! My "friendly from" is Leslie at FoCo Library 📚
Two Twins = 4 People

Thanks! The link for the Ann Hadley directions to change the friendly from line doesn't seem to bring that up, although it does talk about friendly/weird Barbie communication...
Great idea, Angela. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to try it.
Thanks for sharing the information about the Seattle public library situation. We all face that threat and need those communication hints
Thank you 🎉
We have a main logo we use for our branch and then style "guidelines" for different recurring programs. For summer reading, we choose one of the CSLP graphics for summer reading branding (and still include our library logo on all SRP stuff) but keep our recurring programs style guidelines. For example, one of our adult programs, Coffee & Friends, uses light-blue background with a darker hue of that blue in a coffee bean background. Our "symbol" or "logo" is a take-away coffee cup vector that is smiling. We use it for all of our Coffee & Friends publicity-- but also include our library logo. The style guidelines keep everything consistent through all promotions for that program and draws the eye of regular attendees.
HI Angela. I've been the brand police for many different businesses during my career. I am a firm believer that there should only be ONE true logo for your library/business. If you want to create a "mark" for a particular service, ok. But it's NOT a logo. More than one logo dilutes your brand and is very confusing. Promoting your library is #1 and offering a wide variety of products and services is very important. Each one does not need a logo.
Question! What if you were to use both the main logo and a specialty logo like below the other logo and the right side somewhat?! That's just my first thought! TY📚
I don't know much about Roblox, but I have a teen son who knows A LOT! I know it is a platform where people can create their own game content and share it with other users. The gears are turning in my head about how to create a library-themed "game" to promote using our services and our collection . . . 🤔 I may need to hire a teenage boy . . .
That's a great idea!
Turns out many years later, this book is a fraud, including her parents and her heritage. Look at Candace Owens uncover the truth in some videos here on TH-cam and you’ll be astonished in out that this is 100% horrific. That somebody would lie to create this book.
It’s a book of lies. How dumb you must feel now. Her grandmother, you know the one in the picture in the book, died before she was born! The woman she is standing next to is not her grandmother, but a plant to make her appear black.
She lies constantly look at the old videos of her past, lies

I echo @grossepointepubliclibrary8005 - we opened a Threads account but do not post to it at this point.
How often would you post on the resource during the month and would that be on Facebook and IG?
We've added it to our Instagram and been using it for about a month. It's not really getting any engagement yet but still early days.
Thank you so much for answering my question. Angela. We opened a threads account last year and did a few posts in the beginning but haven't posted in a long time. We might just do what you suggested and link out Instagram with Threads and see what happens. .😁
Angela - Wonderful information as always! Our Library has a good teen following. We have a teen advisory board that meets once a week and a Teen Book Club where they get to choose the book to read. One of our locations has a bi-weekly art and craft event that is a good draw. To reach these teen groups we reached out to the local Teen Center, the YMCA as well as the High School Libraries. We have recently added a Nintendo Switch that has brought in a few new teens and a new program we have is a Dungeons & Dragons campaign as well. The last thing we have done is combine the Teen Volunteers with our Teen Advisory Board. Thanks again for the info!
I think I use emotion unconsciously. I'm always trying to entertain, educate, or generate anticipation. And I agree about NOT needing a viral post. If I am serving XYZ County, why do I care if 10,000 folks in other states like our post? It makes us feel good, but...
