My father played for Gateshead at centre half for a couple of years around 1950. He signed for Doncaster Rovers but got a bad ankle injury and had terrible home sickness so came back up, got a job and never played footy again! Dave Varty is his name, and he always went on about the terrible injustice of Gateshead being kicked out the league!
@@stephenvarty191 Gateshead are still getting screwed over now. They got screwed over last season by the Football League and the local council.
They should have had a dedicated ground by now!@@historyoffootball87

My first introduction to football at the age of 4 in 1966 My dad sat me on the wall infront of the seated area started my journey following the saddlers lots of memories of giant killing cup matches and the famous promotion to league 2 in the 1980s known as the championship now when I shop at Morriston now on the site of the old ground can't believe all the years of memories I had there with family and mates so sad when the last game was played there was like losing an old friend will never forget walking up steps to the street end and what an atmosphere it created behind the goal Unfitunatly Bescot will never come close to creating atmosphere of people standing packed together in the old street end memories I'll never forget truly magical forget looks fellows park had tons of character and history and we should not forget that it made us who we are and I will always be proud to say I was a street ender fellows park will always be in my heart and never be forgotten to me it's still the real home of WALSALL FC up the saddlers come on you reds👍

As a 13 year old kid 1991 against Millwall my first game. Still have the stub and program. My evening Gazzette shirt from that day is hanging on my pals man cave ceiling ❤

During this time period Watney also sponsored a brass band. During my senior years at school and after I played for the band and we played before the match and during the interval of the 1970 final. As a result we got to watch the whole thing from the dugout. I remember Best making everyone else on the pitch look ad if they were standing still but not managing to score, much to his annoyance, he was seriously passed off after the match.
Thanks for watching the video.
Season ticket holder at Bootle f c now.
brilliant mate
Nice content bro 👍
Cheers, thank you.
Having bben to both Donny grounds I prefer The Bell. Yeah you got a bit wet but thats the beauty of footy.
Thanks for watching the video
In the early seventies (circa '73) they'd open the gates about 15 minutes before the end for people who wanted to leave early. Lots of people who hadn't been to the match would nip in for the final 15 minutes. My mam and gran would take us down, we'd go down to the front of the clock stand paddocks and get passed over the the advertising hoardings to sit on the red gravel track that ran around the outside of the pitch. Looking back, it was actually pretty dangerous cos the players and ball would come crashing towards us on occasions. Fabulous first memories of going to Roker Park. My first proper full match was in 1976, V the Orient, I think we won 2 nil, sitting with my grandpa in the main stand, in the main upper tier, the wonderful sound of people stamping their feet on the timber floors causing the whole stand to vibrate.
Thanks for watching the video and sharing some memories
Ah yes the ald den
Did you got the monetization bro??
Yes I did
Been a Cobblers fan all my life remember George best scoring 6 standing on the hotel end with me doc Martins on and baggy white Skinner jeans and black Harrington jacket some of the lads back then had them butcher's white coats on .Up the Cobblers i was born under the hotel end. N.T.F. C till i die.

I started following Airdrieonians back in the early 70's. Some great memories there, including beating Manchester City

Thanks for posting. Derby fan here. In the 1980s I'd travel with other London Rams most Saturdays to watch our team around the country. A spare weekend and many midweeks, I'd be here, The Old Den. The electricity surge from the fans, especially some big nights in Cup competitions, was tremendous. Definitely a fans' club and I had great times there. Many a pre-game pint in the Royal Archer. Still follow 'Wall's results to this day.

Drop the missus off to do the big shop and go and watch the trotters get stuffed; again.

Wrong on the Alexandra. The hotel where they were formed.
According to all online sources I could find it says the Alexandra part of the name was named after the Princess.
One more great vid!!! Thank you!!!
Cheers, thanks for watching
As always you are giving us very interesting information
Thanks for continuing to support the channel.
@@historyoffootball87 I do really like your videos As always is it very interesting as a foreigner to learn how stadiums were shared before in the old days. I didn’t know that some stadiums also were used for speedway or greyhound races
Grew up in fleet as a gooner. My parents were both arsenal fans but always watched reading when I could, living just 15 miles away and went loads in the 90s. Loved elm park, great memories
Thanks for watching the video
I remember watching on the Tote end in the early 80s. Bristol city fans stormed onto it and everyone ran off I was terrified. They stayed on there all through the game I joined in with them. Been a City fan ever since 🤣
Always interesting to watch your videos. Now I understand how big the cups are in UK. In Sweden has the cup become more important, but for some years ago treated most clubs the cup as a joke. In Norway is it different - to play the final is really a huge thing
Thanks for watching the videos and continuing to support the channel.
Very good. There is very little info about Wanderers apart from their cup wins.
Its crazy considering the competition has been going for over 150 year only them and one other team have done three in a row.

Tote end for life 💙

Unfortunately it’s impossible to finish watching the video because of your pronunciation. It’s insufferable.
1974 Newcastle v Burnley, can't remember score but would you believe Billy Hughes and Jim Montgomery came on at half time for a penalty demonstration and received a rapturous reception from the Leazes End.
@@CharlesSoden-Bird I've been in the Leazes end a couple of times.

Apparently it is all flats now.
I have some childhood memories of watching Bradford P.A. here. They should never have sold Kevin Hector. I think the fastest goal in the league was scored here by Jim Fryatt being 4 seconds.
Four seconds, that's crackers
@@historyoffootball87 Yes, my understanding is that that was the ref's timing.
Just literally read this off Wikipedia 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤣 it's literally word for word! 🤦♂️
It's not word for word. Stop telling lies.
My first game at the ground was Chester against York in 1951. We won 3 1 and i was smitten. My dad also took me to the Chelsea game that season . We had seats in the main stand as my father worked for one of the directors. What a game that was. my dad got quite emotional! Also saw the last game that New Brighton played there that season in the league. BTW the replay of the Chelsea game was on a Wednesday afternoon-no floodlights then! Thinking about it I must have bonked off school! Well after all that euphoria Chester played Oldham the following Saturday and got hammered 11-2. Their forward Eric Gemmell scored five I seem to remember.

Great memories at highfield rd. I used to be on the east end every week. When we left highfield rd I left the city. Only been to the new stadium once when the Olympics were on.

Anyone remember the open toilets ?
yeh, loved standing in a pool of piss whilst everyone walking past could see you 'hanging out' 😂 oh and watching people climb over to get in for free, those attendance figures were never accurate!!
I went to both final games, great memories. Thanks for this video!
Thanks for watching the video
Worth a goal start to us. I started going in the mid 60s. And I'd still rather stand on the terraces at the Old Den than sit on the seats at the new ground.
Thanks for watching and commenting
I remember being there for an FA Cup tie in about 1973. We (Huddersfield) were in a higher division than Chester but they beat us 3-2. We were on the crest of a slump at the time and were soon in the basement division ourselves.
Thanks for watching the video
Went there in ‘78’. As a 15 year old from the East Midlands, I’d never been anywhere like it. Absolutely terrifying ! Couldn’t wait to get back on that football special at New Cross gate.
Would have been very rough back then like
New Brighton would be good team to do a video about. St Bernard's too.
I did a video about New Brighton's ground a few month ago.
If its St Bernard's in Edinburgh, footy adventures has done a vlog about it
It was my first ever away trip as a Bristol Rovers fan. 1957. We won 4 -3. I thought that the stadium was pretty good. It was a 36-hour trip by rail. I slept for 12 hours when I got home at 7.00 am on Sunday morning. Always had a soft spot for Scunny since then. Good luck for the season!
Thanks for watching the video.
One of the most special stadiums in UK Rather fantastic that they played Premier League last season there
I think their stadium gained more interest from the media than the team themselves.
Do one remember when fellows park had new lights installed.all so some pictures of the floodlight pylons.which I have to build a scale model of one of the pylons thank you
Wasn't Love Street's official name St Mirren Park?
From what I have seen online, yes.
Another great video! Some really interesting clubs here!
Thanks for tuning in again. They all have a special place in history one way or another.
(mis) Spent most of my youth here in the '70's Thanks for the good memories. BTW the biggest ever league win for SCFC was 8 - 0 vs Hartlepool Utd (01 Apr 1978 Division Four) was there for that Nice one
Thanks for tuning in and watching
