Mikuni BST40 Flat Slide Diaphragm Replacement Yamaha Virago XV750 XV1100 1988 and up
This is a quick video showing how to replace the slide diaphragm on a Mikuni BST40 flat slide carburetor as found on the Yamaha Virago XV750 and XV1100 from 1988 up. This part (slide and diaphragm) is available from Yamaha for around $189 - seeing as the bike requires two, this is an expensive proposition.
I purchased a 'replacement' slide and diaphragm from Amazon which turned out to be nowhere near close (I show that part in this video for your reference).
The part that fits came from JBM Industries out of Ohio (great to see American made parts for a change). They fit well, and seem to be functioning properly. I have yet to reinstall on the bike, but I see no reason they will not behave properly, however I will update these comments when I get the carbs back on and synched up.
I am in no way associated with JBM, I have not been compensated in any way, I found the parts on line and I purchased them - I have made this video to help others who may be going through the same search that I have just gone through and can maybe save you some time and money.

I have started up the bike and the diaphragms are working fine. I watched both slides actuate in a steady and deliberate manner. Will probably work even better once the temperatures get back above freezing.

Fireworks for the Feast of the Madonna Dei Martiri in Hoboken NJ, September 8th, 2018. This was a somewhat cool day, with a terrific wind blowing south down the Hudson River. You will see the shells (and smoke) moving from right to left, the camera is set up with the river directly behind it. A portion of the gazebo roof is visible from time to time (for those of you familiar with that park).

They did not tell me to do that with their instructions, however if you feel it would add security I suppose you could, however mine have been operating fine for over a year now without it. Hope this helps. Stay safe.
Nice video. Hey did you shoot with Fireworks by Castiglione. I remember seeing work the late John Serpico back in the day.
I worked primarily with John Serpico and from time to time I worked with Paul Castiglione (amongst others) - Thank you for watching the video, unfortunately John was gone at this point, but I cherish the memories of travelling and working with him for many years.

FYI, the rounded point you used is actually less effective for piercing compared to a pyramidal point or an angular cut like a hypodermic needle. It's about surface area. The rounded cone point actually increases surface area. A pyramidal point (like a bodkin) applied pressure at the corners and peels the material out of the way. An angled point like a hypodermic also focuses the pressure to a finer point and reduces the surface area allowing for easier penetration.

How long does it take to make *enough caltrops?
I could not honestly say - I never tried making more than what I did for the video and my time frame for that is a bit skewed as I was filming, stopping, trying another camera angle... but if you pre cut enough pieces, grind the points and make some sort of a fixture to bend them, you could knock them out fairly quickly. The welding is really what takes time, trying to keep the pieces from moving as you tack them. Perhaps a twist of bailing wire or some vice grip needlenose pliers would help. Sorry I could not offer more information. Good luck.

Tip: Try pointing the camera up at the sky where the action is instead of at the ground, the smoke, & streetlights.
I understand that concept, and when I can, I do try to get all dark sky. However, the only place I had to hang the camera (go pro with a very wide angle lens) was on a sign, on the chain link fence 8' from the 4" tubes. I could have pointed a little higher, but then I would have lost the cakes in the foreground. With this particular show, I normally would not have video taped, but I figured this was a good opportunity to show life from my side of the road flare. I have other videos, some more behind the scenes and others just the sky... there will be more of both (if I survive, more than likely in the next few days). Remember - to a pyrotechnician, the 4th of July is a 3 week holiday (sometimes more if we get a lot of rain). Thank you for watching.

Italians love noise - so when the procession carrying the icon of the saint enter or leave the church we send up noise. We do the same thing on the docks when the saint is loaded on the ferry to go out and bless the fleet. However there we use 3" aerial shells (salutes). The noise echoing up and down the Hudson River is great.
Unfortunately we no longer make our own shells, these are imported. As for timing on the show, we hand fire everything and this boils down to people who work together well and know when to hit the fuses (listening to when shells leave the mortar tubes - you can tell what size shell was shot then decide if you need to hit the size shell you are shooting). Low tech, but more fun than pushing buttons.
