    Yeah that's another one of those interesting things where it sounds like he's only just now giving out his name, but the narrative so far always used it. But Moses wrote all of those books down, so was Moses filling it out? Or did everyone know the lord's name before, and this is another case of "And then they will know my name is" meaning not literally knowledge of the name. Like usually when he says that, especially much later on, it's to people who already have his name written down, but it means more like they'll KNOW personally, from experience, what he's responsible for. I like to think Adam and Eve just called him 'Dad' yknow? Either way, one thing I've always wanted to know is, if the one way of writing it is "i am" and the other is "he is" third person (which I believe you said was pronounced ehyeh)... what's the second-person version of it? If you were addressing him directly by name, before the taboo on the name showed up.. I wonder. 2:08 the way I heard it is, that's where they got specifically 'jehovah' from. since it has the vowels of adonai. ah-eh isn't exactly the same as ah-oh-ai. Shrug! who knows. I think it's kinda funny how the new testament is not just the only historical mention of passover's cups, it's also the only mention of Hanukkah. Hopefully more people get the hint in the future, and realize it's not two religions, but two parts of an arm connected with an elbow. I thought we knew exactly who that pharaoh was, wasn't it the son of the previous pharaoh? so Moses's adoptive uncle. And aren't we pretty sure that was Ramses II? I forget now. Maybe we're just assuming that. I know there is exactly one surviving egyptian record talking about the hebrews, only in THEIR narrative they weren't slaves.

    I love how every time I watch one of these, youtube recommends me a bunch of anti-religion videos. Also I didn't know it was only called Exodus starting in the Septuagint.. I feel like that's just.. a better title. 11:40 I mean.. Moses sounds a lot more like the Egyptian word for water (Mose) than the Hebrew for drawing out of water. It kinda works both ways but she clearly gave him an Egyptian name.

    This was great. Thank you. Also, Deuteronomy 25:11 always puzzled me greatly. I may be way off but is there a hyperlink to this verse in the story of Jacob wrestling with God?

  • @messianicjudaismsongs

    Always found the topic of wrestling with G-d till he blesses you as in the account of Yaakov gnarly. Yaakov broke his (hip). Did G-d submit Yaakov into a Spladle submission or what? Then G-d gave him the name Yisrael. G-d is awesome! 😎

    did Jacob only have one daughter? I somehow thought he had a solid dozen of them, and they just weren't as important to the story. Also DAMN Matt that is a great Yoda impression. So the hebrew of the word wrestling includes 'heel-puller' ? That kinda makes sense. Is Genesis twisting the narrative of pagan tales, or were the pagan tales based on the events of Genesis, via poorly repeating it over the years? Either way our god loves puns and that makes me feel very close to him. I didn't know about the ambiguity of what part of the hip got touched, I always assumed it was the outer side, because my outer hip socket hurts often.

    it's weird how Babel/Babylon has all these others definite solid etymologies, but it also clearly means babbling, and that same root is used throughout a ton of other languages, becoming Berber and Barbarian It's also weird how like, Jacob pulled off a deception, but it was to make the thing God declared happen. Rebecca seemed clearly motivated by that, but kind of in the same way as Sarah, trying to make God's plan happen on your own in your own way, by your own power, instead of waiting for him.

    Considering the scheme Rebecca and Jacob pulled off, the initial thing where Jacob takes Esau's birthright under duress is kind of superfluous. They could have just stolen it.. but somehow those two shady deals combined are less bad together. Man that is really a cogent comparison with the animal skins and the snake. and just ilke a snake, those skins could come off later. I thought you were going to compare it to the animal skin garments God handed Adam and Eve so they wouldn't get all scraped up in a harsh world.

  • @KairuHakubi
    @KairuHakubi 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I thought Sarai meant 'princess.' i guess there could be some overlap there. Huh, I forgot Terah followed other gods. The backstory is kinda vague, but the impression I get, the first we hear of Abram, is that he's a member of whatever religion Melchizedek is a priest of. So he must have been the first one in the family. I always found it interesting how everywhere the israelites went, people KNEW their god by name. But with varying degrees of understanding just what a big deal he was.

    I have never considered before that the specific way God had Moses write this down was a way to answer and relate to, but also correct, the other creation stories of the region, which obviously would have been passed down orally by people who descended from Noah and knew it all, but hadn't kept it properly. LOT of neat wordplay here, it makes me think for sure that either Adam and Eve spoke Hebrew, or their language ends up being the closest 1:1 to Hebrew. Otherwise all that junk wouldn't work as well! Course, Adam and Eve had no alphabet, so it would have been lost on them... 24:25 yeah the english word 'wife' literally does just mean woman. It's just we kept it, while we stopped calling men 'were' except when you add 'wolf' at the end. So that's a fine equivalent.

      that's a good catch. it says he made him and then PUT him there. 5:55 interesting, that is also the Greek word for 'whale' isn't it? I remember a lot of people discussing how it can't be a whale (without divine intervention anyway) because their throats are tiny, but a huge fish (such as a whale shark which does live in the area) could absolutely swallow him, and people HAVE been pulled out of shark bellies alive (but not for THAT long, obviously still need oxygen, so.. there's divine intervention _there.)_ I did not know the gender of the fish changes grammatically, that is crazy.. in fairness fish DO do that sometimes, buuuut... I imagine that's more of a.. grammatical quirk. 10:55 yeahh i think about that every day 8D it's hard to dodge the fact that, objectively, it would be better if the world just ended now. No more new people would be born who would never meet God. Buuut the big guy's got plans, so whatever, I'll wait.

People with the opposite opinion sure don't. Not without losing your job and all your friends. 19:55 hell, try it in the UK. you'll actually get arrested. 22:40 hey it's a longshot but don't forget the other six or seven running.
