Off Grid Scotland, eco living, natural living,
We have bought 50 acres in the highlands of Scotland and will be building our off grid eco home using renewable energy to power our eco home that we will be designing and building using natural materials. We will be living in an off grid caravan while we design our house connecting to solar power and making our own micro hydro power system for our off grid power, we will be connecting a composting septic tank to deal with our waste and making our own greywater reed bed to filter our water. We will also be filtering our own water collected from one of the streams running down our property.
We plan to rewild the land with new trees and grow our own food hydroponically as well as construct a cob roundhouse and convert the sheep barn to a workshop and renewables plant room. Join me and my family on our off grid live and see how we make off grid living work.

Keeping Our Water Flowing All Winter: Affordable Hacks to Avoid Frozen Tanks
You have two approaches to keep your water tanks from freezing - insulating the whole setup and keeping the water moving. To insulate, you built a simple shed-like structure around the tanks using scrap wood and insulation. This will help maintain a warmer ambient temperature compared to the cold outside.
To keep the water moving, you added a drainage pipe from the last tank back to the river source. This ensures constant water flow through all the tanks, preventing stagnant water from freezing. You carefully positioned the drainage pipe to avoid fully draining the tanks if the inflow were to get blocked.
The video walks through the practical steps of constructing the insulated structure and setting up the drainage system. It highlights a few key considerations, like matching dimensions of building materials and properly sealing the tank fittings to prevent leaks. Overall, the video provides a detailed, hands-on tutorial for winterising your off-grid water supply.

But what if you want to concel the trap door? Ots kinda noticeable for a random strap of leather to be just randomly be hanging on the wall for no apparent reason
More random thoughts while the adverts play. When I used to filter veg oil I have three tanks, each 2 inches lower than the last. The 1st feed goes via a ridged pipe to the base of the tank, the inbound oil pushes the oil at the top of the tank (with less crud) into tank two, that is also fed to the bottom and again pushes the oil into the bottom of tank 3. A 200L sock filter existed in each tank so regarding the silt, if you could, at the start of the run, at the top of your hill, push the water up, into first tank, gravity alone should remove a lot of muck. Maybe 3 stacked 1000L IBC containers would do if not too ugly. I shouldn't be typing on here as I've not watched the whole video or any of your other videos, this just stumbled into my feed so apologies if this is nonsense.
Quander? Or whatever it is, make from plywood and paint it with fibreglass resin (which you can sand as smooth as you like) will it last? Works for boats.
What’s it been like the past week with the cold spell ?
Have you prospected for gold ?
If it’s a 96 wouldn’t it not have the Td5? I thought the Td5 was introduced in 98. Maybe it’s not the original engine. Or maybe not a 96. Either way looks great for your needs!
obviously you may have already upgraded by the time you read this - but the channel "land to house" has some great screens as part of his on-going ram pump and micro hydro stuff.
Have you thought about a shed to house your unit, this way you're always working in the dry, it's quieter and you can store the necessary tools in there as well as providing protection?
Just thought I'd pop a comment of appreciation for the content 🤝
I relate so much! I discovered your channel because of your sunsynck inverter setup. We are busy doing the same thing. should be moving to our new land in the next month or two. financing for the land was just approved. Might I ask why you want to do hydroponics instead of aquaponics?
A quote from a Terry Pratchett book (I think it might have been Going Postal?). "No practical definition of freedom would be complete without the freedom to take the consequences. Indeed, it is the freedom upon which all the others are based.” I think that the idea of disconnecting from the system completely is pretty much impossible. The system provides an economy of scale. I certainly couldn't survive in the wild by working as little as I do in a job. (And by saying as little, I mean doing a normal 9-5 day job.) Even if you were able to secure enough truly wild land that survival was possible and took with you all the skills and knowledge. You would need to have so many people with you to spread the work and work so hard. Also it would take years to build up enough resources and infrastructure (even if you tried to love nomadically, you would still need to carry a lot with you). And life would be short, without modern medical care. Most of us only know the very comfortable life (compared to true self sufficiency) that the system allows us.
My solar is similarly low angle, due to the location. I find that the sun angles in the winter really affect the generation (it's a simple cosine calculation, so not surprising). But that sun angle also affects the amount of tree shadowing I suffer. To the point that there would be no gain for me to change the panel angle in the winter. Just live with a few months of poor output.
Amazing to see this in the Highlands! Just curious - is your land classes as a croft and youbhave the tenancy on it? Or is it just a plot of residential land? Thanks!
Which company are you using for this?
I was excited to watch this but the first 6 minutes and even more had me up the wall. You say you’ve no secrets, but you’re not explaining properly about your flats, ect. So basically you did have money. Then not hardly knowing how many acres. I live in the highlands in my static. Currently got an advert up looking for someone to help me with a place to move it to settle as site is for sale, and all my money been spent over the years. Really thought this was going to be useful for me. It wasn’t, just going on about flats, lodges, profit, searching right move ( which you need money for to buy properties ) . Crazy to think I’m looking for 20 mates by 20 metres, and you can’t figure out if you have 48 or 53 acres in the beautiful highlands I live in 😮
Stumbled across your channel by accident. Passed the fank many times and noticed the activity on site. Always wonders what was going on 😂Gritted that road in the winter for 12 years, it’s a stunning area. Will need to catch up on the series, might take a while. Hope you’re progressing well. A bit late, but welcome to Cowal. Have subscribed so o can see the progress. Cheers 🥃
Thank you my friend! I was in the same position wondering how to include wind power into my own system, until I found your video. Great stuff! Much appreciated.
easy to do thing with no money when you own a block of flats
how to go from nothing to 50 acres.... I used to own a block of flats.... and how the fuck did you afford that?
Why havent you levelled the caravan?
I’ll enjoy watching videos of the bike building and stuff like that. This is a great video so far.
Watched most of your posts , do you have Full Planning Permission for the house ?
How on earth do you folks find land like this? I live in Scotland and trawl zoopla all the time - finding something like this seems super rare. Assume this is in the Highlands somewhere. Could you do a vid covering stuff like planning permission for your build?
Just found your vids watched a few, I'm from Corby too. Soon to be living in Sydney, again, thanks for the channel 👌
Greetings from an off-grid old man in the mountains of Colorado. I'm not a hydro person at all but it seems to me if you change the pointed nozzle material to perhaps teflon or maybe coat the existing points ( I assume they are made of brass ) the silt wouldn't stick to them. How about chrome plating the nozzle points and the orifice. Must be some coating you could apply to prevent the silt from sticking.....a chemist or metallurgist would probably know. Love your system, you did a brilliant job with that one.....best of luck to you and your family from America....🙂
According to Eco flow Delta pro specifications, you can charge only the delta pro ecoflow from solar and ac at the same time. So why you are invert the ac from hydro to dc and after charging the unit? I miss something?
New follower here from New Zealand. We use Ulstrom mesh (made in the UK I believe) to catch a New Zealand delicacy, called whitebait. Possibly it is a wider mesh than a kiddies tutu, but is tough as. The generator that is used here for a a Micro Hydro is called a Fisher and Paykel Gentle Annie washing machine motor. Is a three phase motor and can produce about one KW unmodified, although there are plenty of how to videos on rewiring. But is low voltage not mains voltage. Very common and not expensive in New Zealand. Regards Lindsay
Hi guys. your website is down. What's thew law on building your own or buying a wooden house in Scotland? were planning on moving from Portugal. thanks.
What a lot of info that would need to respond fully to that. There are Planning and Building Standards that you would need to conform to.
There are NO failures,,just adaptations,,,learning to adapt That's the key..Always moving forward..Another great video. 💯🇬🇧💯🇬🇧
As a ex mechanic and now beef farmer, this made me chuckle/smile..We moved 2 36ft caravans onto our land while we built our 5 bed house...Brought back some laughable moments..Great video. 💯🇬🇧💯🇬🇧
Wow! 5o acres. That's amazing and looks incredible! Best of luck. Greetings from our off grid tiny home on 8 acres in Ireland 🇮🇪
What about an Ikea wardrobe onto hollow cheap plasterboard
Definitely use the butterfly (spreader) fixing. Screwing to a stud is best but if you cant then use the plasterboard fixing with the widest spread
If you were doing the skirt again, would you make it insulated?
Yes but I would make the access areas easier to open
Love your approach to life mate it’s inspiring 💪
Thank you 😁
those Big rocks could of been placed there by the ICE Age
Hi just up your street kiss harber natural buildings tonight's blog have a look if you haven't already watched enjoy your chanel
Too much waffle man, just get on with it!
You forgot to put your bra on!
I appreciate your openness in this video, but given your start point of buying a property with potential for 18 flats and 4 houses by borrowing money from friends and family members, it's a bit of a push to say "you can do it and you can do it right now, it doesn't matter what position you are in". For 99% of people this route would be unattainable. How would you have secured the finance with no securities?
take a look at LoRaWan. Its similar to wifi but it works @ 900mhz and can travel kilometres.
Should have had a cement board backer, mounted on a flammable surface.
Our well freezes when it gets bad. It's usually 2-5 days with no water. Just a thought. I'm sure you've already dismissed it! IIRC, you have heating in the space under your caravan. If the water barrels were next to the caravan, enclosed, you could potentially cut a hole in the caravan skirt and allow the heat under there to keep your barrels from freezing? Enjoying your progress immensely.
The best electric heater is a Bitcoin farm! Concider it :-)
It is better to install the vertical ventilation pipe slightly below the water inlet. This allows the trapped air to be released from the pipe. Otherwise, this air will remain in the pipe and reduce its throughput, creating an air lock.
Over the past few weeks I have been developing my off-grid ideas on paper for an ecological farm glamping campsite. Before I start looking for a lender, I need as much information as I can gather. The land I have in mind is hilly and may have an opportunity to use a DIY hydroelectric turbine in addition to a 10 kWh solar panel system. I'm curious about the costs of an 800w DIY water turbine and experiences. How expensive was the system, does it make sense to narrow the pipe with reducers to increase the water pressure and is the system profitable?
Glad to see you back. I started to wonder if TH-cam had shadowbanned you. Keep the content coming matey
Thanks 😁
That device has MPPT built in and you’re changing its power curve. System changes its resistance internally and voltage distribution of whole circuit changes and current as its result.
Great useful video(s)!!! How was the Deisel heater one year on ... continued problems? Would another heater have been better? Thanks again - Know a subscriber!
Do you reckon the first anchor used will be enough to hold half of a mirror weighing about 5-7KG, with the other half being held by a regular screw in a wall stud behind the plasterboard?
I think so yes, I have used one for a mirror before. If in doubt put a dab of silicone on the back of the mirror too so that it holds it as well
What was the black stuff you painting on the edges?
Its a Bitumen paint, nothing too special
@beyondtheworkbench ok thank you, sorry seen it later in video 🤦🏼♀️😂
