Glad to see your success in building up such a sizeable game. I used to own 2 boxed sets, one unopened which I sold well on eBay. The second set I sold broken up a year later and actually got more money, the two terrain hills were surprisingly in demand. A great game but i never had a chance sadly to play. Pity games like this arent still made. GW I think went on to make Warmaster in metal for a number of years. But those minis were much chunking although on the same base size. One gamer locally plays Warmaster Revolutions the latest rule set, with 3d printed armies, of which there are a large number of ranges out there.

BoFA is very much a long term project for me that I dip into from time to time. I managed to secure a complete box plus all the metals for a very reasonable price back in the day and have been painting and eBay sniping ever since. I do know what you mean about some eBay pricing though. I have told my wife not to worry about our old age as I have 4 units of elven cavalry… The Copplestone miniatures are the way to go for Rohan. Some other goodies I’ve found along the way: Reapermini Saproling’s for ents, you can even make one of them lift a stamping leg for some orc squishing realism Eaglemoss chess sets can provide a very nicely sized metal Nazgûl on Fellbeast and also a Mumakil if you want to bring some Irregular Miniature Arab/Southron’s to the table.

The minis are so great, despite being monopose. Managed to pick up a few sets over the last two decades, but prices now are ridiculous. Good work on converting in the command groups. I eventually did something similar with the men to give me some Empire spearmen and archers, as scaling up BotFA I still only want a handful of Dale units. So glad I picked up a bunch of elf cavalry back in the day. Used the BotFA elves as Wood Elves for Warmaster over the years. And the trolls are mixed in with my GW ghouls alongside the bats for Warmaster Vamp Counts. For the bats, I have always based them like GW but played them lengthwise like infantry. Never had any issues.

LOL. We get the joke @9:26 where the text refers to units identified by letters, but the graphic uses numbers for each stand. The editors and proofreaders owe Mr. Priestly a pint. Also, I am working on simulating BoFA using a very similar army list but the improved Warmaster Revolution (WR) rules, and in old school 25mm. I am sure you've heard of WR, and you may want to use the improvements made in that fan written system, accepted by GW as not violating copyright.

@shawnzeppo4361 Haha, I'm glad someone spotted that in that pic. The rules are written in a very cluttered way and then examples like that just don't help. I've watched a set of videos on the Warmaster Revolution rules. The differences seem quite subtle but I need to look into it more. Capping orders to 3 per unit makes sense though I imagine getting off more than that becomes pretty unlikely anyway. Good luck with your own project, that sounds exciting!

It moved soon after to Stevenage, but sadly recently downsized to a smaller shop (still in Stevenage) that focuses on space for gaming tables rather than stock. It's a shame because it used to have a really eclectic mix of stuff. Are there many good hobby shops in Beds? I visited the Bedford Tabletop Expo earlier in the year which was small but showed some promise.

@@TimelessTabletopGaming sounds good! I’ve just got the new Rise of Angmar book and we’re going to play through some of the narrative scenarios (once the relevant models have been bought, built and painted…. Which might take some time!) 😂 as my fiancée and I only play VERY casually! We were working our way through most of the Quest of the Ringbearer scenarios… but they we had a baby (who’s now 14months old) and so that fell away 😂 Thanks for the offer of a game, hopefully we can get that sorted sometime 👍🏻

@reluctantheist5224 I've since realised that it was probably supposed to be a raven. I'd forgotten the bit where the Dwarves talk to a raven called Roäc, and it's the ravens that send for Dain. I don't think they ever interact with Gandalf and Bilbo though and Tolkien does describe the Thrush at the door of Erebor as 'enormous' so who knows?

@@TimelessTabletopGaming Yup, it is a Raven. The Ravens were the messengers, the thrush was just a prophecy fulfiller, though the Thrush DID summon one of the Ravens to get them in touch with each other

GW should have known you cannot use "evil" paint colours on the good guys. Better to slightly change the formula and sell separate bottles for each alignment with suitable labels, like "Niblet Green" & "Loren Forest", for the elves. This would increase sales/profits contributing to the business strategy of maximizing shareholder value. Oh wait, this guide was written 20 years ago, they have those colour labels now 😉Also, you did a great job in reading the passage from The Hobbit!
