Sitting On Top Of The World 1928
มุมมอง 23K8 ปีที่แล้ว
Al Jolson sings I'm Sitting On Top Of The World in the 1928 film The Singing Fool. Jolson was contained by the limitations of the early film process which meant that he had to perform live in a limited area so that the early microphones could pick up his voice. An incredible performance under the circumstances.

Larry Parks was pure perfection. Such a handsome, talented man.
Peter Jackson's king kong
I know the worlds to all of these old songs but wouldn't have a clue what Taylor Swift was trying to sing about.
and thats entertainment he got the talkies and movies started at high speed with his electricity
I'm 72. Born in East London. Grew up listening to my family singing this great song. Sadly the blighty is fucked.
My grandad sang this to me. Wonderful memories
If I'd had this much energy at 42 as Jolson did, it would have been incredible...
Fabulous 👌 👏 😊love this ❤
Amazing!
Nobody did Jolson like Larry Parks... nobody.
And the magic spell of performing for a live audience weaves its way around Jolson & weve passed the point of no return folks!: you ain't heard NOTHIN' yet!!!!
fantastic the worlds greatest entertainer
Almost 100 yrs. later,,,,,we're still watching ya, Al.........
The studio version from this same year has Jolson whistling the chorus
Jolson's songs and style were revolutionary 100 years ago. Don't be so quick to call him racist. Jolson insisted that black performers in his shows be paid the same as white performers. He was also perhaps the only white performer that was allowed into black venues and he and his wife would invite black performers to come to their home for parties on the same basis as white performers. It is through people like him of both races that barriers were brought down.
Jolson definitely wasn't a racist. As you say, he was supportive of black entertainers and insisted they were employed in his Shows.
My grandfather would sing this great memories ❤
Bring back Max Bygraves we are sick of Ant and Dec
Just the looks in this part of the movie send shivers up my spine.
❤
A glimpse from a different time, long before the consumer society when there were only 2 billion humans on the planet (which many thought was overpopulated even then).
tiny tim's version was so full of Joy. this is more dramatic!
That’s Larry Parks portraying Jolson. The original king of blackface !
I understand he wrote whilst living under the friargate archers in derby..
My father loved al jolson and sang his songs in the same voice ...he's not with me 24 yrs now but when i listen to Al i feel as if he's with me ...today i listened to april showers because it's raining here in april which is unusual ...it signifies hope in not so good times ...i need that right now i think we all do .
They don't make 'em like that anymore
This is the greatest idea i ever heard. Kudos to the geniuses at Cameo-Parkway
Get a black band and have some real fun
My father used to sing This Morning to us as a family when we were growing up. H have just had a question on this song on the Chase. Wow, brought back many fond memories. A good question to ask Bradley, as many people will have fond memories too.
Vast oceans wide melt into our sky Make rain an snow clouds up high Oceans far and wide are the supply Spring showers bring flowers to eye When if it's to dry in July they all die
Once apon a time the London national anthem, and I'm a Glaswegian.
Frühling und Aprilscherz zugleich. Welch ein Schmachthaken!
Donning black face is not always racist, indeed a few days before joining my university as a freshman I was performing with an Al Jolson tribute act in a local bar. Unfortunately it was full of students, not wanting them to think I was a ‘whitey; looking down on other people, I was forced to wear black face for my entire four years at University so as not be accused of being a racist. This spiralled down into me joining local black gangs to keep up the pretence and now I’m serving a life stretch for a drive by shooting after hitching a ride home with some boys from the hood. Ironically I still remain to this day, a huge Jolson fan.
Wikipedia:According to a television programme broadcast in 1957, Bud Flanagan said that he wrote the song in Derby in 1927, and first performed it a week later at the Pier Pavilion, Southport. It refers to the arches of Derby's Friargate Railway Bridge and to the cobbled street where homeless men slept during the Great Depression
Thanks for uploading. Reminds me of my grandmother who loved this song. They had such sweet voices.
My grandad always said he would love to have met these two and kick their fckn stupid heads in.Appthese two gobshites were hated and were threatened by the Eastend because they earned so much during the war they lived a luxury lifestyle fckn phoney twats.ALSO THEY WERE TOTALLY FUCKIN SHIT.
Yeah this guy Max was a great entertainer as himself, happy times when Max was on the TV all the time.
MAGNIFICENT!!!
Please don't knock Al Jolson for the blackface, it was a different time and era, just like in those days Gays were considered criminals but not today, times change, the good thing about Al Jolson was he had a beautiful voice which no one can deny.....
My grand dad loved these 2 this was his favourite song he had 9 greyhounds i remember him grooming them and singing this when i was about 5 in the outskirts of Sheffield
Luv Jolson & Parks ❤
One of my late husbands favourite songs we played them every night together my husband was such a lovely man and I miss him so much god bless Reg love you XX ❤❤
Larry performed the part of Jolson in the movie but he didn't do any of the singing. All the singing was done by Jolson. Your title to this video is not really accurate.
Legendary voice brings a tear to the eye 😢
This song brings back so many happy memories. Thank you.
My generation will know Bud Flannigan for singing Dad's Army's signature tune: "Who do you think you are kidding Mr. Hitler". He recorded it, went home and died . . .
Impersonate: to intentionally copy another person's characteristics such as their behavior, speech, expressions. I think Larry Parks did an excellent job of portraying Al Jolson and doing all if these things. evelyn Keyes was very good in her part too
My grandad used to sing this to my grandma all the time ❤😢
One of my husbands favourite songs he loved Al and I would play it for him all the time even when he was so ill with cancer and forgot everything but always Sang to Al miss him so much he was such a lovely man 😢❤xxx
Miss my grands. What sacrifices this generation made for us to be free❤️
