Hi! My name is Marcus Hutsell. I make videos about audio, video, and lighting tips, tricks, gear, techniques, tutorials and educational videos about those topics. I've been in live-event production for over 18 years which have included countless concerts, weddings, corporate events, and even film shoots. Hopefully my experience can help you!
My Favorite Mini Tripod!
This is my favorite mini tripod, I have probably 5 or 6 exact copies of this, but, you have to buy each of the 3 parts individually, but, for me, it's almost the perfect mini tripod:

3POD Wander Aluminum Travel Tripod - Worth it?
มุมมอง 1903 หลายเดือนก่อน
I got the 3Pod Wander Tripod because it LOOKS very similar in design to the Peak Design Travel Tripod. The 3Pod is DEFINITELY LONGER than the Peak Design when all folded up, it's NOT as compact, and it's heavier. But it's also taller when extended. Unfortunately, the foot-design is a "no-go" for me, and I don't think it's well designed in that area. Amazon occasionally has this tripod on its si...

Great video Marcus - thanks for being thorough in your explanation. I was trying to understand this for an FX30 I just purchased where I'm looking for a continuous source of power for my use case (seems to be similar to yours - talking head videos in studio, so I can be plugged in most of the time) and your video helps a lot. Let me know if you recommend any particular USBC cables for this (long and high quality) - I'm thinking of getting a right angle usbc cable as well so it sits snug on the side of the camera - any thoughts on those in general?

cool setup! may I know if you've had a chance to try the leofoto mt-03?
Glad I caught this video. I was in the process of searching for dummy batteries I’m not gonna go that route with this new information.
I’m glad the video helped! Happy recording :-)
When creating an aggregate, it only sees one of the USB microphones. They are the same exact make/model of microphone. Ugh.
That’s very interesting, thank you for posting this. Unfortunately it’s something I cannot test as I do not have two of the same model USB microphone. I would think that they would still show up as two of the same thing with the same name in MacOS.
I have been trying to figure out the features on this for years, thank you!!
I'm glad my video helped, happy Recording, and you're welcome :)
13:09 was it supposed to show the NPF battery life on the camera before the firmware update? also i heard from several powering thru USB C port makes camera overheat more than a dummy battery, is that true what does your experience say
Hi there. With the most recent firmware, the external (dummy battery) battery life indicator on the back of the FX30 screen WILL go away and you won't be able to view it. It will show the percentage for a minute, UNTIL the on-screen warning comes up. then, with the FX30, the battery indicator on the back of the camera goes blank/empty. That's Sony being Sony. However, on the A7iv with the most recent firmware, the battery indicator does NOT go blank when using External NP-F batteries and a DC cable + dummy battery, although the percentage numbers do go away So, that's good news I guess, we still get the 1, 2, or 3 internal "tick" marks on the battery indicator on the A7iv. However, one thing I did learn from another TH-camr is that, no matter the Firmware or battery choice (3rd party or even dummy-battery), if you connect to the camera wirelessly with your smartphone or ipad using the Sony Creator's app, you can ALWAYS see the battery percentage on the mobile device within the app on your smartphne/ipad through the app This also works on the "Monitor and Control" app, and the "Monitor +" app. As far as overheating. I have not had any overheating issues using Battery + USB-C. Yes, if you use a dummy battery, the camera body overall will be less-hot because the FZ100 battery will also get hot, adding to the internal temperature of the camera. On the FX30, this has NOT been a problem, as the FX30 of course has an internal fan to keep it cool. And I've recorded for 7+ hours on the FX30 using an FZ100 battery and additional USB-C power delivery power, and the camera just keeps on recording. If I use my A7iv for long event-recordings, I still use an FZ100 battery + USB-C Power Delivery power, but I keep the screen on the A7iv open/away from the A7iv body, and I've purchased and use a small fan (Ulanzi brand) that attached via springs to the back of the A7iv and helps keep it cool. And that fan on the A7iv (all cameras typically recording in 4k @ 23.98 or 29.97 fps) run all day with no overheating issues.
Thank Marcus for this video. As of today December 19th, 2024, this is the most COMPREHENSIVE review Arca Swiss plates and quick releases. You review all the brands like Peak Design, Ulanzi, etc. You also DEMONSTRATE their disadvantages. The BEST!
Hi there. I’m so glad the video helped, and you’re very welcome. :) I was fairly confused when I first started getting into higher end camera equipment. I always used cheap tripods from Best Buy or even Amazon for my previous and smaller cameras like the Sony RX100 that I had for many years. Similar systems with cheap tripods, but not usually as universal between brands. So when I learned about thewhole arca Swiss thing, that’s the route I went. And I recently moved everything over to the Falcam F38 system, I like that quick sliding in and out of my gear, and my F3 8 plates are still arcus was compatible. Anyway, happy filming, and happy holidays :-)
@@MarcusHutsell Thanks. Same to you and your family.

You're welcome, I'm glad the video helped :)
Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice on recording setups and software. I currently record with a Sony A74 DSLR and a USB mic connected to my laptop. I use QuickTime and OBS, but I often run into issues syncing the audio and video. Do you have any suggestions for better software that could make this process easier? Recording directly into the camera is another option, but dealing with the huge file sizes afterward can be challenging. What software or workflows do you use for recording? I’d really appreciate any tips or recommendations. Thanks in advance!
Too much talk..just get on with it
I ordered mine without a Bowens mount. Sadly came in today and I have to order a bowens mount to make it work 😢
Are you saying you ordered a light that did not have a Bowens mount receiver on the front already?
@MarcusHutsell Yes please I mean the triopo octagon softbox. I wanted the bowens mount that can fix on the key light but I didn't get that one but rather a camera key light bowens.
Got mine yesterday - Apparently it also works with EA1 combo without any vignetting. My combo A7ii+EA1+70-300mm SSM. AF works fine, but I don't know about the speed, I don't have any EA3 to compare.
Are you nuts?
Not more than anyone else I guess. Just wondering why someone would be nuts coming up with a mounting solution.
I feel like the panasonic is warmer than the FX30, or is it just the editing ? Been contemplating on the FX30 to start wedding videography & I’m going for the warm tone vibes
I definitely had to edit (probably both cameras/color) a bit to match them as close as I could, because they didn’t look quite the same straight out of camera. I struggle with thinking that the FX 30 looks better sometimes (color/skin tone)… And then I think the GH5 looks better sometimes. Some color editing is almost always required to get them to match as close as possible.
Very thorough investigation
Amazing video! Thank you for going into such detail about the audio quality! It means a lot.
DOES THIS WORK FOR SONY A74 ?
Yes it does!
Came for the Submix...stayed for the Tild Key! Thanks
very very helpful thank you 🍺🍺
1) I would would like to understand what the disadvantages would be if I mount this mic directly to the camera and use this setup as a webcam/mic combo for zoom calls. 2) Would it be ok to use this mic with a mini tripod sitting on my desk below my screen? (same use case here = zoom calls)
overcomplicating
I’m a frayed knot!
Easier to just get a atomos hdmi to sdi with build in battery… it’s a one of a kind 12yr old product look it up
thank you for the video ! i have a question : i have the FX3 you say the camera need 9V/3A but the NPF battery is 7.4 V will it work ? i'm not an electrician ^^ ( i just ordered the TOPRIG version not the smallrig ) i hope it works i need some extra juice on camera with my gimbal ! thank you for your help , mark
This video has saved me in so many ways. It was so good I bookmarked it into to several folders. I was so stressed out about what I would need to make this mic work, so much so that I was going to give up and just sell my mic. Thanks man✌️
How bout ver 4 on a7iv does smallrig battery works?
Thank you, will try it! I have question, maybe i had still this hissing sound, because i put my 3.5 from camera microphone direct to scarlet headphone hole. But i need to buy wire for R and L output right?
I love to wear structured hats like gamblers and fedoras, but I also wear Audiotechnica closed back headphones when I'm on my computer, whether in a meeting, editing audio, or browsing the web. It's been a habit of mine for a very long time, and I hate the feeling of earbuds inside my ears. I used to have one of those creative headsets where the ear pads had clips on top so they clipped onto your ears, while the band rested behind your head. It also had a tiny adjustable mic that rested close to your left cheek. The trade-off with something like this is that it won't sound as good, and often bleeds sound out. It would be cool if there were designs like this in the pro audio world, where the band was at the back and the cups were horizontal, rather than vertical. However, I always wear wired headphones, and I don't mind the look of the cable as it's part of the territory. I would rather have that cable visible than constantly be checking the battery level on a pair of wireless headphones. So, while I can certainly dress up the look with a nice blazer, the hat is currently a non-factor. The brim sticks out too far, and the band on the headphones would be plopped on top of the crown, which fits like a square peg in a round hole. I also never took into account different hair styles, which could definitely add another dimension to the style of headphone one wears. I keep my hair in a crew cut, so I'm fortunate in that aspect. Although it might end up looking like a fake Mohawk, when the band creates a ridge down the middle of my hair. But, doesn't bother me.
Hello, Can i record program and clean Camera 2 at the same time using 2 solid disk?
Hi, how effective would be 3m peltor+ anc in ear pods vs nover ear headphones blocking noise for making peacefully calls in my house right next to a building construction?? Any other idea? Thanks!
Hi! So practical video ! What wired(with or without Bluetooth)headphone model and combination would you recommend for video callings on noisy environment next to a building construction? I saw your Sony daily headphone. ¿Would a ANC headphone make a difference? Would make a difference a 200uss vs 100usd headphone for that use? And, adding to it a hifi detachable mic like Antlion modmic can help ? Thanks!
Love how that we can use the Movo mic as a streaming mic. Does any one else have the problem of it not capturing as much sound? I have the Ugreen plugged and the sound test level at 100% but its only picking up about 13%. The mic sits no more than 2 feet from my face.
Almost found something to be used with the XL. XL is 3.1cm at the largest depth. "TA-UPBH-B powerbank holder" can hold up to 3cm in depth, but its annoyingly just goes 9.5cm in height D:
Excellent video. When you're on a zoom call and listening via speakers, does the output from the speakers ever bleed into the microphone?
Thank you so much. So, #1, I never use speakers during Zoom/virtual calls......I ALWAYS, always wear headphones. th-cam.com/video/KfQlHgZ16iI/w-d-xo.html And #2, if I did use speakers, yes, with any microphone, any sound waves will eventually get back in to the microphone to some degree. How much depends on mic choice, mic placement, speaker placement, speaker volume, etc......but sound waves coming out of the speakers will bounce off of object, your desk, your chest, your face, the ceiling, floor, etc, and can be heard by any microphone to some extent. The meeting software itself can help with some of that by digitally adding "noise reduction" or "echo cancellation," but I just use headphones.
@@MarcusHutsell Thanks. I've used a headset for years but I've really grown tired of them, I always end up with sore/fatigued ears after a couple of hours on calls. They're Bose 700's, so a good comfortable headset, just not multiple hours comfortable. I got some basic Creative Pebble v3 speakers as well so hopefully Zoom does enough and removes any noise/echos coming in this mic.
@@CathalMacDonnacha-t8h Yeah, I know what you mean, after a while, ANY headphones or earbuds will get tiring! Keep the mic close, and the speakers low, use those in-meeting audio options and you should be good. Happy virtual meeting!
Great video thanks. I have a slight problem that you may be able to solve. I have a Manfrotto fluid head to which I have attached a long (120mm)Arca Swiss clamp. Works really well for attaching telephoto lenses with Arca Swiss tripod collar. However, I would like to be able to also attach a camera with L bracket. Obviously when attached to the Manfrotto set up it is facing 90 degrees the wrong way. Is there a small Arca clamp that would fit into the long (120mm) Arca clamp, but facing 90 degrees differently.? Thanks again.
Can you have 3 cameras side by side or only 2?
Give this guy a gold medal please!
what about k&f NP-FZ100?
Very helpful thank you !!!
You’re welcome! I’m Glad the Video helped :)
As you invited me to watch this video ... I just did... I agree with everything you said BUT ONE THING. I also use multi-camera , specially while producing video podcast (8 cameras controlled by the BlackMagic ATEM. I Understood your speakers pushed the camera too far... but... that makes the video feels wrong, uncomfortable to the audience. I believe that's where most of the comments (or complains) about it comes from... I hope you find a way to place the camera in a smaller angle... that's all it takes for your videos to get visually better. But of course, we fall on your reason number one: it's your video, you do it however you want it. :) Best wishes. You're a great guy.
😁 Thank u for the feedback! I do appreciate it….Cheers
I subbed
Thank you!
great info! thanks ! what pelican case model are you using for storing your camcorder ?
Hi there. Thank you, I’m glad the video helped. I’m actually not using any hard cases for my cameras, as when I travel, they are all in my backpack so they stay close to me and I can carry them on the plane. I’ve definitely been thinking about getting a larger pelican to hold 2 cameras and all my camera stuff…. it is a bit of a pain when I do use two of them on an event and the cameras, lenses, and all the accessories and clamps are all in different bags or cases. 🤪
But. If you’re talking about the camcorder and case in this video, that’s a Panasonic CX350 (not mine, I use it at work quite a bit,) and it’s in a Pelican 1560. Fits very nicely with all accessories and still lot of padding around all the components. My FX30’s are the ones I usually just keep in my backpack (I’d forgotten I’d shown the CX350 in this video)
Well .... when you have so many other batteries already, working fine ... I wish we have a solution for the other batteries as well. We should be able to disable this feature, to say the least.
yeah, Sony should definitely make it an option to disable. Especially if you want to use a dummy-battery.
@@MarcusHutsell And that's exactly how I use it .... on both A7IV and FX3
I dont see a point swiching your angle 90 degrees to show you sideways .... it feels uncomfortable. Try to place your second camera into a smaller degree difference. Also, there should be a purpose to switch cameras ... and I guess you're just doing that to not feel "boring" as a one camera video... but it's working the opposite.... 90 angles made no sense. Just a hint
Hey there. Yeah, I actually made a video talking about exactly why I do this. th-cam.com/video/8XuZ_PutMV4/w-d-xo.html Some of my choices are intentional......some of my choices are because of how my space is setup and just dealing with WHERE I can put things. I blame my 2nd pair of studio monitors :-P
Buy a desk top charger, problem solved
I’m not sure exactly what you mean by desktop charger…? But bought these to use as mobile devices for my laptop and my work box… I now have (3) Anker 747’s, and I actually have two anchor Nano 65 watt chargers as well for my Sony Cameras .
I am using condenser USB Boya MC2 condenser mic ( that features three audio capsules, and is capable of capturing sound in a 20' radius, with 180-degree coverage) which is great as no matter where I place it it picks up my voice even from few meters away and is sensitive enough that it hears ticking of a clock on the wall. It's not studio quality mic but very convenient for home office and doesn't require any arm, boom or placing near nor above you.
I wasn't familiar with that model, but after searching, I see it is very similar to many boundary microphones that are used for just that type of purpose....meeting rooms, sitting on desks, etc.
@@MarcusHutsell of course but many of this kind are trash, I've tested them and Boya is very sensitive and dirt cheap but if you can spend more money then MXL AC-404 or AKG PCC170SWO are great as well; for online meetings you don't need anything better unless you are doing webinars or need to exclude some of unwanted noise
Yeah. I normally wouldn’t ever use a boundary mic for this type of thing nice never thought they were very good, even the Shure versions….then again, most of the time I’ve used them (a while ago) it was in live events/theater environments and trying to amplify them in a room….and it’s feedback-city!
mine will not connect
Won't connect to what?
@@MarcusHutsell needed firmware update. I’m all good thanks
@VegasGates5.0 awesome!! Have fun :)
32+ years ago bought sony cdm-850 $200. Still have and sound great. Got another on ebay used and bass is much less. It looks used much less than mine. I dont know if it needs burn-in or sony changed something mid production and now I need an amp or seller installed cheaper drivers. I dont know if that was how 1st pair sounded because I only had a portable cassette player then.
Yeah, hard to tell. It's also really hard to "hear" changes in our equipment if it's a slow change (due to physical degradation or a slight change in manufacturing). I've been using the Shure SRH440A at my desk for the past couple of years while my 7506's I use more out-and-about on gigs.
Marcus, excellent video! Since I am new to the MD-HX, this golden nugget of info is vital in keeping signals unchanged. Thank you so much for such a thoroughly explained and visualized tutorial. Your real-world scenario is the perfect demonstration of how the whites and blacks clip when in RGB conversion.
Thank you, I'm so glad the video helped. Just remember, use those scopes!! (which is also why I don't like using computer monitors, because they don't have any scopes.....or at the very least have some scopes in addition to computer monitors). Good luck!
Which mount can I use for the Rode Videomic Go 2? Do you have any ideas? for the home office?
Hi there. Personally, I have my 3 rode mics (Rode VideoMic NTG, Rode VideoMic Go II, and Rode NTG-5) ALL mounted on a single, cheap boom arm. here's the exact gear I'm using, FYI, these are all affiliate links to Amazon. Basically, I have this VESA monitor arm to get some height so my mic arm can boom up, and OVER my computer monitor: amzn.to/499miaB But I don't mount anything on the end of that arm directly, I then clamp on this cheap mic arm to the horizontal section of the previous arm: amzn.to/4g6h0iK Then, on the end of that mic arm you can mount your Rode VideoMic with a 5/8" to 3/8 adapter like this one amzn.to/4i2PbJM, because the VideoMic Go II has a 3/8-16 threaded hole. However, I needed more articulation, so I also added a cheap ball-mount on the END of the arm before I put the microphone on: amzn.to/3CTvt2S And, so I could mount all 3 mics, I added (2) double-cold shoe adapters like this: amzn.to/3V4P2vB HOWEVER, depending on your desk setup, the Cheap, $13.99 mic boom arm and a single 5/8-to-1/4 adapter would do Juuuuust fine, and you should be able to get enough height out of it without the extra vesa arm.
