ADVANCES IN SELECTIVE BREEDING OF AQUATIC SPECIES | #fish
This podcast is based on one of the best review of genetics in aquaculture, the paper: "Advances by Selective Breeding for Aquatic Species: A Review" by Drs Trygve Gjedrem and Nick Robinson (Agricultural Sciences Vol.5 No.12, October 2014), and despite 10 years old it is still the best summary of how we rapidly have been following livestock and plant breeders thanks to the high fecundity, massive phenotypic variance and short generation intervals of aquatic organisms. So I thought sharing with the broad community to test the waters and interest.

But already shrimp industry is struggling alot due to overproduction and low prices in such situations is it good to increase the aquaculture production???
@Anime-c4p-y5o thats a really good observation! demand has been low and will continue low with living costs high everywhere. People are avoiding eating shrimp in favour of cheaper proteins.
With faster growth and more disease resistance lines available through Selective Breeding, farmers will get better results and more produce

That's amazing 🎉
200 its low density
200/m2 is super intensive. Few companies are successful above 200/m2. Curious fact: the average global productivity is 2,800 kg/ha/year, which for a 12g shrimp and 65% survival is about 35 shrimp stocked per m2 per year. If farmer is doing 2 crops per year, the average global density is less than 20 shrimp stocked per m2. Saying that 200m2 is 10 times greater than the average density. Do you still think 200 is low density?
Iron man😂😂😂

Hello sir, can you say your opinion on applying neem leaf juice in shrimp diets? neem is not toxic to shrimp, since i checked keeping few PL in neem juice they are fine.
That is something to be tested, but must have a specific objective? What is the problem you need to solve ?
Thank for sharing.
Minerals cant help shrimp to molt! Minerals only help em hardens their exoskeleton after molt! Above 35% protein will cause shrimp to stuck molt! Believe me! I research vannamei shrimp already

If demand is so high why prices are falling shrimp
I believe we are still facing the effects of the pandemic...shrimp is a luxury product and people aren't yet back on full spending. mode...But this should change as tourism worldwide has bounced back and we should expect higher prices in the future. Here are some facts... • Shift in Market Demand: The pandemic led to a major shift in consumption patterns. With the closure of restaurants and hotels, there was a decreased demand from the foodservice sector, which traditionally absorbs a large share of the market. This shifted demand towards retail, which couldn't fully compensate for the loss from foodservice, leading to an overall decline in prices • Changes in Consumer Behavior: During lockdowns, consumers turned more towards retail purchases, including frozen and easy-to-prepare shrimp products. However, these changes were not sufficient to maintain price levels due to the substantial reduction in foodservice demand • Logistical Challenges: The pandemic caused significant disruptions in transportation and logistics. For countries like India, which depend heavily on imported shrimp larvae and broodstock, restrictions on international transport severely impacted production capacity, further influencing global supply and prices • Economic Downturns: The economic impact of the pandemic also led to lower disposable incomes globally, which in turn reduced consumer spending power on luxury items such as seafood, exerting downward pressure on prices
Parabéns! Sucesso sempre!
Thanks Dr.
Thank you
Thank you so much sir to share us this information.
Thank you so much Sir.
Awesome setup! I’m really impressed with how efficient your new RAS system looks. I’d love to learn more about your UV sterilizer-did you DIY it or purchase one? Any tips or advice on integrating it into the system would be really helpful. Keep up the great work!
you can DYI, but these ready made housings out of PVC are not expensive and easy to plug and play. UV should be placed after all other filters, i.e. the last thing before water returns to tank, because UV rays don't penetrate in dirty/murky water as they do in clear water.
How are the water cleaned exactly? And how to control pathogens?
Amazing information. I saw people adding 1.7kg of salt for M3 . Is that good or bad . What do you think as well of adding probiotics as lactobacillus ? Thank you in advance
hello, depending on what is the level of salinity in the system, which should not be below 10 ppt for intensive system. 1.7kg of salt only increases 1.7ppt, so it does not make any difference. Not bad for the fish, just for the pocket. And adding probiotics of a reputable brand, yes, absolutely. Lactobacillus are better to be added in the feed rather than in the water.
@@hashtagfish8542thank you for the reply. can I use the water of the biofloc to water my plants knowing that there's salt and water is alkaline because of the caco3 ?
Hi salt, kills most plants
Can we use RAS culture in shrimp farming? I mostly see RAS culture being famous in fish farming.
Yes, but a simpler version, not a clear-water RAS like this one

Will chelated zinc removes phosphorus need for plankton development?
Why would one add zinc or chelated zinc?
@@joseantoniosantosdom I had seen farmers in Andhrapradesh applying zinc to pond bed before filling.
@banukumar444 zinc is important in the feed at about 100 mg/Kg of feed (another item to test of the feed used), but IMO it makes no sense to add to water
