This is the first video of making these diy showers that have used the adapters available so there is not need to drill holes in an end cap.
Hello, I enjoyed your video and found it very useful, can you tell me what size AC cable you used pleased in your van walls?
I too have a a covering lid. It's amazing how many design variations one might contrive. My lid has attached side spacers in addition to the one in the front, all of which rest on the hinged seat. By my math this saves 1/2 " on three sides, but I flunked algebra so the jury is out. The way I mounted it is wacky; you use a conventional hinge mount, a horse I abandoned mid-stream. My design is idiotic and complicated and so is superior in every way %^O Also, I made my seat too narrow for a conventional seat by 1/8" inch. SOLUTION: toddler's toiled seat. This was a serendipitous mistake since for portable applications such as van life it saves valuable real estate. If you're too proud to sit on a baby toilet, a marine toilet seat is an even smaller alternative -- if it get's the job done for a Marine's ass, it will get it done for yours. I found a urine diverter on Etsy 3D printed in shiny Notre Dame helmet gold. It rests tightly into the mouth of a gallon milk jug. This was my first ever woodworking project, what a blast if time suck. If anyone is interested, I have a spreadsheet that makes dimensional calculations for all components based on seat size, from which the rest of the spec is derived automatically.
I bet the lady demanding color document wanted a bribe!
ohh haha i can't believe that didn't enter my mind - well i got her her color documents at the end of the day! haha
Yeah you’re right. It’s a confusing world out there. 😬
but beautiful still! gotta just get out there
Keep going man!!!
I kept going! And I made it :) took a year but made it to Ushuaia (now planning the EU + Middle East + Asia trip...)
Thank you for sharing your video. Tips are valuable & helpful.
of course! Hopefully some of this stuff is helpful to some people :)
It shouldn't be using 18 amp hours to boil that much water no way
hmm maybe it was an issue with the inverter?
Good video. On Amazon it says this stove will go up to 1800w and split that power between the burners if you want to run both.
Ah, I didn’t realize that about the power split!
Several things I want to point out. First, most of us living in a camper or van are not really composting the waste , we are just going to throw it in the closest trash can as soon as we possibly can to prevent odor in our living space. If you empty after every use you really don't need all the added expenses of a urine separator or the peat moss, etc. Women (and men too )can pick up a paint cup with handle and spout. Urinate in that and you can easily pour it into an jug and empty when full. You can get these at the Dollar Tree and Walmart for uder $2, grab several so you can soak or clean one when needed. For solid waste, line your commode / bucket with trash bags and then add torn newspaper, catalog, magazine strips. This will absorb any excess moisture or liquid. You can add more on top after you finish if desired. You can often get free newspapers or even leftover circulars from stores after the sale ends. Another fact, newspaper is pretty good at absorbing odors. Immediately after using the bathroom, close the bag tightly and trash it. If it's late at night and unsafe to go out I place the bag in a smaller bucket with a lid and trash it as soon as it's daylight or safe to do so. I'm an elderly woman and travel alone so I play it safe. Be sure to immediately place a clean trashbag in your bucket and throw in more torn paper strips so you'll be ready if you have an urgent need in the middle of the night. You can still use animal bedding or sawdust, etc. I use paper to save money. Don't use peat moss, it often contains insect eggs and you could end up with bugs in your van/camper. Hope this helps someone on a tight budget.
some people find the idea of wrapping organic matter in plastic and putting it in a landfill to be abhorrent, and if you dont, you must be extremely ignorant or extremely selfish
What is its weight? Can you get away with thinner material? I long to be dead inside and full of regret LMAO
hahah this made me laugh - if you mean thinner plywood, maybe you could but I didn't want to risk cracking.
@@JeremiahLuke Mine is a 1/2 ply box with no support or reinforcing lumber. 20x15x17 and it's nearly thirty pounds, disappointing. Glue screw and hardware contribute significantly. 3/8" would work for someone slim for sure. How slim I'm not so sure. I might experiment.
I’m looking into owning a van when I retire from the military. Something about van life that amazes me. Thank you for the video
It is an amazing journey especially if you take on building the van yourself :) Hope you get there!
u are a truly horrible youtuber, its been 4 fucking mins ina nd you still ahvent said anything. im out
this video sucks and is super annoying
Your glitches are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo annoying!!!!!!!!!!! Thumbs down. Could be great content but I got annyoed too much. Appreciate 5-10 minute video, to the point and without the annoyances.
Hey dawg, what new battery settings did you input for the charge profile? Also wondering what DIP settings you use on the charger. Currently my charger is only providing a couple of amps of charge which doesn’t even make up for the current load on my battery which is alose only a few amps/7watts. I’m using the factory S1 off/S2 On setting and the same battery as you. Thank you! Pretty pretty snazzy
I would have positioned the cap of the urine container up high. If it leaks, it would be above most of the liquid, & therefore would leak less….
I have the double-seal bags that are designed to slip over the bucket. When I’m done, that bag gets double-sealed, and then disposed of. As you say, it is meant to have it’s use minimized. But boy, when nature calls, its value is truly proven.
ya know i also found myself using a big orange juice jug more than this toilet anyway - so your gut is pulling in the right direction i think
Bosch KSV36AWEPG is 0.3kwh per day
Needs more guitar…
hahah touche
Great music selection and well done video man.
thank you! Music might have been a little loud haha
Are any of the drywall types good enough? For most or many purposes? Not as strong, but strong enough? Which type or types would you recommend (if any)?
hmm i am not familiar with drywall types - but i can say that the plus nuts + bolts worked wonders! Everything was super sturdy (I pushed the van up some pretty rocky mountain roads and nothing every broke or came loose :))
I would of been nice to see how the dimmer switches is connected up and to have understand of input and output.
there're so many things I wish I had filmed better! totally agree
My husband and I are building our new (well it's a 2019) but it's new to us Dodge Ram Promaster and I'm getting lots of great ideas from watching other people build theirs. I want an induction cook top and we're going with an all- in- one micro convection, grill and air fryer to save space. I cooked with micro-convection instead of my stove for many years and I loved it. Thanks for the tips.
I hope you guys have the best of times! It's a truly special thing to build a van and then travel in it :)
Does your lithium battery fully charge just using an isolator off your alternator?
I almost always had consistent drain (lights, stove, heater, fans, laptop charging etc) so I almost never had a full charge - I also don't fully understand the way batteries/charging works but I think a full charge was pretty rare because the batteries stay healthier for longer if you don't fully charge them?
The music is so annoying. Had to quit watching
so true - definitely need to get better at that
You didn't specify what wattage the stovetop was set to. So the information is unclear and leaves too many questions.
haha i know there were so many things I struggled to understand! this was a big grey area for me for sure :)
good video instruction, thank you for sharing. I too will be using rivnuts and the rivnut tool in my next build and from some other youtube channels I've learnt to save weight and space you can directly mount your furniture using the bolts/rivnuts without the extra framing, which is a great alternative. In my first build I learnt framing is when there isn't a structure, e.g. a new house. With a van it's already a metal body structure, like having a house with walls, if that makes sense, no need to double up with extra framing unless you need to build it out to reach the furniture, it's all about learning from living. I've found my first build didn't have anything bolted to the framework and I travelled 1/2 of Australia, down terrible washerboard roads, and everything else in between and nothing fell apart, it held together no problems at all. I think too many people overthink and don't experiment by living in it before overthinking it to see what works first, e.g. Chrome from Vancity Vanlife, Matthew from VanLife Plus and many others I watch haven't put in any framing and they actually live in a van fulltime, it works, no overthinking/overdoing necessary.
washboard roads will test even the hardiest of builds! haha
Hilarious editing. Earned a sub. I Have a ninja 400. Picking up my gen 3 KLR in two weeks! Ride safe man!
hope that KLR is treating you as well as mine did for my thousands of km :)
I KNEWWWW it was click bait!!! You are a fraud!! So you had a high powered high income job and you saved a %$$ full to take a sabbatical and "do" the "van thing". Huh? Yeah!! And after a year of playing around traveling the country making a couple of bucks on YT, you are done on the playground now. You will go back to your high powered job and "do" the "get me super rich" thing again. I am NOT impressed!! A little boy. I thought you were living in a van becasue you more or less HAD TO. You fell on a little bit of hard times and then the reason you were quitting was due to some SERIOUS reasons. ALL these damn van life videos of quitting are ALLLL CRAP!! Run along now kid!
I use an infrared cooktop so I don’t have to use special cookware and it’s safer for reproductive health.
whoa that sounds like a great idea!
@@JeremiahLuke it’s weird. In another forum I got seriously attacked for mentioning infrared cooktops as a better alternative seeing the European limits on induction in 2013 and yet here in American forums there’s the flaming attacks from those that feel there are no health issues with induction and it’s perfectly safe. I’m sure induction is safe within protocols but when limits are being written into law perhaps it needs more study.
@@JohnLaFosse from what I've seen, people find a reason and a way to attack no matter the content - its good for patience building!
i know i'm late, but thanks for posting this.
of course :) better late than never
Ford really sucks at building vans these days. They should have kept building the Econolines and just put on a longer and higher body. The Transits smaller engines last half the life a 5.4L flex fuel motor does. My 2012 E350 lasted 840K and was burning oil so I replaced with a factory remanufactured one. I do expediting and 95% of my miles are cruising down the interstates.
840k!!! Whoa! that is absolutely incredible wow - happy for you
Any update on attempt #2. I may have missed something, but why didn't you make it on first attempt...you were doing great!
I came soooo close to giving up for so many reasons - not to self plug, but i recorded the second attempt most of the way down to Argentina on this podcast: open.spotify.com/episode/5O43ur5FRlTXY1W5umCmKP?si=52dc92324e004c89 I might even re-listen in the coming months to encourage myself for the NEXT moto trip across europe + middle east
Wow...what a hectic day...btw, your motorcycle video's are awesome...thank you!
I just used self drilling screws to secure boards. Van builds are massively depreciating assets. The more time and money you put into the van, the more money you will want for it when you sale it someday, and it can be very hard to find a buyer that will pay over market price. If you trade it in, the dealer will low ball you because they don't care about your custom build and it can never be insured as a RV because it wasn't built by a shop. All I am saying is, your time investment will only have value to yourself and don't expect it to retain value.
totally agree! I was lucky enough to have just as much fun (in retrospect) struggling through the build process as I did traveling in the finished van. but 100% didn't get money back for time invested - only priceless memories :)
That thinsulate good for hot and cold weather insulation?
hypothetically good for both - better for cold than hot i think - which is why I did the thin silver stuff behind the thinsulate to help with heat reflection in summer / hot days
I used to run down to Tijuana to pick uo tacos from Francs and return to San Diego, all the time, but sure - feel your fear.
jealous of those awesome memories you must have! id encourage anyone to face their fears and see that most of it is made up in your own mind just like these ones were
I like this style of video where I have to interpret the story. I think it gives the viewer a sense of freedom to ascribe what it means to them.
that was definitely along the lines with what i wanted! Even I saw it a few different ways after making it
Wouldn't it have been way cheaper just to get someone to do your oil change in Mexico. Also, Auto Zone sells single sockets 😂 Not to rain on your parade, love your videos dude, keep it up!
hahah man I coulda used you along the way to help knock some common sense into me. Honestly I think I wanted to do it myself for the experience of having changed my oil in a parking lot in mexico haha - worth it
Of course it’s not comfortable, but it beating squatting over a cat hole. I have built a similar compost /dry toilet for a long term land lease lot across the road from a beach in Thai land. I hook the separate pee container via a plastic pipe to a 2 meter deep cat hole filled with sand that safely percolates the pee into the subsurface soil. After the poop successfully composts/dries completely I usually burn it and dispose of the ashes in the trash ir scatter it.
Good ideas in this video. Thank you! I've never heard anyone call butyl (bu-til) tape beauty-L tape before.
Hey man you randomly popped into my head and I searched you up to see if you had posted anything , hope you’re doing well keep rockin
When i was on the road truck stops were good their all over the place with a van park out front plenty of lighting.
From vans to motorbikes to trucks. Will be interesting to see where this next chapter takes you.
Hilarious!!
You're pretty Funny Man! All the random clips you put in your videos got me laughing. Reminds me of Walterific. Good Stuff!
i wish you used watt hours instead of amp hours. How many volts is your system? Wh are consistent. My ecoflow delta pros are 48v which i assume is totally different than your system.
At the time he made this power stations were a lot more rare and 12v was the norm for van life. he had lifepo4 batteries in parallel, so 12.8v nominal voltage
Hey Dale, you look bored. here's an idea, buy a horse and ride it around the world, you can name the horse 'Chip'.
