    I make v60 pour-overs daily. The grind for pour-overs or more coarse seems way too fine with the Opus (only have it, not the Ode Gen 2). I bought mine a month ago. My experience is I can't get the kind of coarse grind that they say. I had to set mine to 11 on the outer ring and set the inner ring to the coarsest setting to get something that works just ok as a pour-over. So that's basically like a 12 setting. Initially, support said that it has to be the outer burr so they sent a new one. No change. Then they sent me a new unit that I just got today and I'm getting the same results. Have you used the Opus consistently for pour-over? You have that quick look of the grind size at the 3:21 mark using 5.1. I'm not getting that with mine at 12. I don't know what the size of the grind (no tool to measure that) but it's visibly too fine compared to what I used before (Oxo conical grinder). And no way it would work for even coarser French press or cold brew. The fact that your grind size at 5.1 looks coarser than mine at 12 gives me some hope that maybe it should work but two machines and I can't get a 3:00 minute V60 pour-over (with 20g coffee/ 300g water) for the life of me. Uggh.

    I bought an ode grinder for $400 dollars and the motor died after using twice a day for two years. 1 year warranty. Fellow did not offer parts to fix or repair. Best they could do was 10% off another expensive grinder of theirs. I have a Baratza that tastes just as good- much better in fact when everytime I look at the broken fellow I think of how they got $400 out of me for a 2 year grinder. The Baratza has lasted me seven years and I can buy parts to easily fix, so tbh that alone makes me wayyy happier everytime I use it!! Fellow is hype imo and a good way to send your money to a company overcharging you for poorer quality than other brands.

    Do you think this would have sufficient body for those of us who prefer a more traditional shot of espresso? I tend to like chocolatey blends in the 50(ish) agtron range pulled as a 1:1 or 1:2. Though I am still particularly fond of SO Guatemalan coffee as it tends to give me chocolate, caramel and roasted nuts while still offering an apple like acidity. Anyway, just curious how this would work out. Thanks in advance if you have any input.

  • @justinhpatterson
    @justinhpatterson 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Are you using "good" relatively, given that you're on the go? Or are you genuinely finding the shots "good" in comparison to more standard home methods of making espresso? I saw Hoffman put out a particularly brutal video on the OutIn ha ha. He and his barista buds seemed to find little to say good about it beyond the potential convenience of the built-in heating. I wonder if his device was faulty or something -- he was finding the heat was escaping the water too fast as it was pushed through, so the extractions were consistently bad.

  • @justinhpatterson
    @justinhpatterson 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

    If we get this at the intro price of ~$550, would you say it's an easy "yes"? It still feels pricey to me in comparison to something like the Timemore Sculptor 064S, but the build quality and design decision all seem great on the Olentia.

    Earlier this year, I dove down the coffee rabbit hole with a burr grinder and a Hario V60, but the coffee still was problematic. Among other things I couldn't get my V60 brews to hit that magic 3 minute timer that's been in all the vids on YT. It might take 4 to 5 minutes to brew and it still tasted mediocre. I have a water softener and terribly hard water, which I discovered was over 400 ppm, both softened and softened. I tried bottled spring water and the results were an instant improvement. After doing research, I realized an RO system wouldn't be good because I'd burn through filters. I settled on using store-bought distilled water remineralized with Third Wave Water. It's remarkable how much better the coffee has been. Apologies to the plastic-savers, but I'm only using 1 gallon bottles, but my local store does have 3-5 gallon refillable jugs of RO purified water. If those test out at less than 10 ppm, I'll figure out a way to switch to using those, because I have quite a stack of empty one gallon jugs now.

    Can we talk about the elephant in the room that is this HUGE and hideous logo? I really wonder who is at the same time into coffee aesthetics and this LOOK AT ME-branding. Which is a shame, IMO. If they just used the little airplane in a more subtle way (their scales almost have done it - the airplane is there and if you removed it from the silver plate, it would look amazing while still being clearly by their brand!), I would love to buy their stuff.
