I don't know if the rules have changed or not since this video has come out, but based on the 2024 rules, wouldn't this play specifically be a violation of 9-6-4d? In which case we wouldn't kill the play or call a UNS, but instead we'd call a live-ball IP and enforce it from the previous spot.
You can go with 9-6-4d and you would be correct. However, you can also use 9-9-5 as this act could be looked at as making a travesty of the game, thus warranting the dead ball foul and UNS, as this is not a football play. I think that was the point we were trying to make but as mentioned, you would be correct if you wanted to stick with 9-6-4d and call this live ball illegal participation with a basic spot enforcement. Thanks!
looks incomplete
I'm flagging the offense for too many in the backfield, because of the left tackle.
Good catch! Definitely suspect, probably at least a talk too or even a flag. Thanks!
I keep hearing the block has to be "immediate". Not true! The "INITIAL ACTION" must be immediate following the snap. If there is an "initial" action, then there is an intermediate and final action. To have a kid from a dead-stand-still jump for another kids legs is asking for an injury to occur. The player initiating the action should be allowed to step or turn toward the angle at which they are going to block the defender. This will allow for the block to then come "across" in front of the defenders legs versus hastily jumping at the defender and either going head first into the knees or thighs. Allowing a step or turn will allow for the O-linemen to get a proper and safe angle of attack or determine if they need to even continue with the execution of the cut block.
Thank you for taking the time to respond. We do appreciate it. We use "immediate" to give officials context to determine if the player's contact was "initial" as per the rule. If you look at NFHS 2-3-7, blocking below the waist is making initial CONTACT below the waist from the front or side against an opponent other than a runner. Your word "action" is not identified anywhere in the rule so in order for the contact to be legal, it must be initial as depicted in the diagram. Websters Dictionary defines "initial" as "existing or occurring at the beginning". The definition of "immediate" is "without any intervening time or space". So we stick by our interpretation on how we instruct officials to officiate this type of play based on the rules. Now, it seems as you feel this type of contact still presents a potential danger to the player and perhaps could cause injury. I would recommend you contact your state NFHS representative or local rules interpreter to request a rule change to more accurately reflect your feelings towards this contact. Thanks again for caring about the game and making the game better!

Defensive holding or Illegal Use of Hands?
If you felt that the receiver was not a potential blocker and was clearly running a pass route, then yes, you could go that way as well. Thanks!
I’d say yes he has a the right to run his route
27 yard line
Looks like R is holding K. Cant really tell what if anything K is doing to R. Probably Ks ball at the ends of things. Dont really see R being blocked into it. Very strange. If the k player was switched with the R player then 100% i have R ball and hold on K possibly kick catch interference instead
I have R being blocked (pulled) into the kick. R ball at spot of first touching by K.
I was head linesman on a game earlier this week where this happened and we flagged it. Coach was not pleased and complained that he did it in his day. At half the whitehat gave more explanation of the rule and coach was satisfied.
Blindside blocks are what i play for. Come on man.
We did that all the time on D in the early 90s
I would put this in the same category as when O-Lineman out of a 2 point stance and shift or go down in a 3 point stance on "hut" on 3rd and 1. I think they are all either penalties or none are. I could go either way. With the rolling to another gap, ive seen individuals do this and I just roll my eyes. I always assume their grandfather told them that's what they did in the 2nd round of the 1978 playoffs.
I paused at 2:16 because the rule is written oddly. It basically says a disconcerting act is when someone does a disconcerting act. That’s like saying the definition of a cat is an animal that looks like a cat.
Haha...that is a great point. I guess we need to look at Webster's definition of disconcerting: 1: to throw into confusion... 2: to disturb the composure of... The definition of "act" is a the process of doing something. Who knew we would need a English lesson! Thanks for the comment!
Thank you for replying! I enjoyed the debate you all had because in the end it is a judgement call. However couldn’t a defender waving their hands while jumping during a FG/XP be considered “disturbing the composure” of a kicker? I don’t see how this is different because it still is an unnatural football move.
It’s hard to give that to the offense knowing they have the snap count now if the defense was to audibly distract the offense it seems more of a factor
Thanks!
If the defensive line did this on every snap for shift movements, I would allow it. If this was only done once per game during a money down then I would flag the defense. Context matter in this case
Thanks... Makes sense!
If you thought the ball was beyond LOS it sure looks like KCI on kicking team.
That's a good thought and observation. This angle is not the best and in real time on the field, the receiving team player did have an unimpeded clean attempt at the reception. Thanks!
R holding and PF K for the shove of the R player on the ground. Same outcome as no foul, right? But it sends a message to play aggressive UT cleanly.?
I like you thought process... thanks!
As an official I find the more you can show presence and just quick chit chat with the kids and show respect they play with respect (moat of the time haha)
Only thing i would add is once you throw the flag turn and continue with the play.
In my personal opinion how i look at this as an Umpire I look to see if the engagement was initial and consistent and small(yards). With that, i usually talk to the lineman briefly when we have a moment and let them know "Hey, I like the blocks you have but on pass plays dont drive them too far because i could've called you downfield on that one". Typically with that simple talk i have no issues" and they love the heads up and makes for better play for our game and future games with other officals. You throw a flag everyones emotion gets heightened and those eggressive blocks can turn spicy quick. If the lineman is just downfield just to be down field i throw it.
MIBT, I have two videos that I can't find much on. 1) Umpire ball placement between hashes and when a ball and shouldn't be replaced. Most of the time it's easy but for new officials it would be nice to have a condensed version of this. On PAT, Field Goal, Kick-off, can you move after O/D of Timeouts, Punts, Safety Punt, Fair-Catch, incomplete passes, after each quarter (switching sides). 2) Can you talk about odd formations and how you want the crew to talk when this comes up. As a newer official in the Umpire position I find it challenging at times to quickly identify that the TE is covered up at my angle if a WR is on the line or not especially in SC headsets aren't used in most games.
100% i think it was interception. Joint possession does go to the offe se but that second or two after hitting the ground to complete the processes of a catch i believe it shifted from joint to defense completed the pass and WR removing his control. As a Umpire and especially when I'm a Back Judge nothing grinds my gears more than when line officials try to put be a 1 man show on TDs. There's absolutely no way from his angle, he even sees the ball and control as they're turned away from him. At times crews look sloppy taking too long but theres also times sloppiness can be based when rushing. This is a prime example of when working fast makes you look very sloppy!
What about initial contact with the snapper?
Question on this: These players ran down the field together and touching each other nearly the whole time. Does that also constitute as not being blind to it?
Block in the back 100%
100%
As an official, my personal opinion is that the player with the ball was attempting to breakout of the initial tackle and the defensive player came in to make a play quickly to make sure he couldn't get out. I'll keep the flag in my pocket and as an Umpire or Back Judge take 10 seconds and talk with the kid saying "thanks for not going helmet to helmet and next time lead with arms because it was a close call on UNR on a defensless reciever. 9/10 times the kid respects the crew so much more in situations like this. If you have played football, especially on both sides, you understand a lot more of the judgment and rationality in these high-pressure situations. Another thing a lot of videos miss, which I believe is a HUGE thing is timing of the whistle. Of course if whistle blown penalty, if not all officials are deeming it alstill as live and player is active in attempting to breaking out.
In my opinion the open or closed hand does not matter in terms of fighting. If you believe it's a combative action with a hand then it's a DQ. Both should be gone even though I would talk with the kid in the white saying I understand your frustration and your reaction but you cannot fight swing what so ever. Then I would go to 44 on white and let him know that I appreciate you for taking action and getting your player away. Huge respect with that action. I agree that urgency is necessary. As an official you need to get close and try to settle it down
Even if you thought it was a muff beyond the LOS, wouldn’t it be first touching by K? Looks like K touches it then R touches it.
I had this happen in a 10U Pop Warner game today. Punt was blocked behind the LOS and was muffed by R behind the LOS. K recovered the ball after the muff. My HL had stayed on the LOS and said the muff occurred behind the LOS. I announced that the ball had muffed by R behind the LOS and that that touching is ignored. It was recovered by K but they did not make the line to gain, it was R ball at the spot of recovery. I will just say that K coach did not react well to the ruling resulting in a UNC.
They don't know the rules anyway so his opinion didn't matter. lol

Sir! This was a big game played on 9.13.2024. I’m doing a recap video on it. I don’t want to get into this portion of it. But there were a lot of calls that a lot of fans are upset about. I imagine your video would be very helpful. I am Box County. th-cam.com/users/liveCNmPXWnwMuc?si=AnkLR9X5aYNExweu
With all the action in the sideline, the wing official is slow to get over and be a presence to potentially stop this before it starts
Notice the rule states “to strike in a combative manner “. Not a fist vs open hand. To me both are DQ’d for fighting. They each struck their opponent in a combative manner
I contend that if this ball is live....it shouldn't be live any more. Forward progress is stopped. I think we would support a flagrant and a possible ejection.
Does not meet the definition of flagrant.
Ball isn't dead until the whistle blows, as a player you never assume the play is over... The whistle is blown and you know when to stop. You are encouraged to go until the whistle by every coach, referee, player, and fan. He pushed him in the ribs, he didn't lead with helmet or shoulder to hurt... He was just trying to make a play.
Here's a question that perhaps you can help answer...this past Fri, a player(rb) had removed his helmet after a play, and said it was due to a player on the defense pushing it up during the play, therefore the rb was removing it in order to put the helmet back on properly. I personally have experienced this problem with the Schutt F7 helmets, in that it doesn't seem to fit right if it comes halfway up and you just push it back down, part of the padding in the back of the helmet seems to bunch up unless you remove it and put it back on. The player was wearing the schutt f7 helmet, so it made since to me. But there was a flag thrown on the rb for removing the helmet and the penalty was for unsportsmanlike conduct. Is this the correct way to address this situation?
Without seeing the actual play, it is hard to comment on why the unsportsmanlike penalty was thrown but as you describe it, I would question why the flag was thrown in that situation. If a player needs to remove the helmet in order for it to be on properly again, then yes, that player must leave the game for one play. The officials on the game will not get involved if the helmet has faulty manufacturing that can't be detected. If they are able to identify, they would not allow players to use faulty helmets.
Definitely flagrant!
No, it's not.
Reall...What chart???

Mmm, a bunch of things going through my mind watching this... That *&^%$!? logo in the middle of the field might make it a little tougher to judge 10yds if the kid kicks it straight forward. Does the Big Ten allow that sort of interference with the lines on the field because the rules seem to say otherwise. NCAA Rule 1.2.1.f.1 The entirety of all yard lines, goal lines and sidelines must be clearly visible. No portion of any such line may be obscured by decorative markings. Luckily, it didn't matter on this play. After a bit of googling, I stumbled across the box score on the IHSA website archive which answered my other two questions. How did the game end? It remained 31-v-25. How come you are all alone back there? It was only a crew of 5 which was a bit of a shocker. I expected for the top game of the season, they would put out a crew of 7. It was great to see you at our convention in the UK earlier this year, all the best.
Interesting observations... Yes, many states only use 5 officials in their playoffs and finals because they use 5 officials all year and now in the biggest game, we add 2 more officials who have probably very little experience working those positions or the crew as a whole have very little experience with the added officials. So, yes, in this case with an expected onside kick, back there all alone. Thanks for the taking the time and the research!
In a crew of 7 with an anticipated onside, the R is still all alone back there. The extra two guys are also in the box midway.
@@Motorfuzz I know CCA mechs would do that. Would NFHS mechs do the same on a crew of 7 ? Haven't worked any High School since my last trip over in 2013. I'm in Europe which uses the IAFOA mechs. They differ - on a 7 they keep U near the kicker, R and L on G/L pylons, H,B,F,S form the box.
@@WithTwoFlakes even for a anticipated onside? Our state’s 7 man mechanics for HS essentially copied the CCA manual, which is 6 in the box. What you described is what we do for “normal” kickoffs.
@@Motorfuzz Yes. Even for anticipated onside. I can't recall if putting folks in the box midway has been considered as a change.
I'm of the incomplete pass school. He's bobbling it all over the place before he drops it. Never had possession.
Thanks!
Northern VA is enforcing exactly the same as Illinois ! 👍
That player is not defenseless at the point he took possession and began to advance the ball.
Great job on that play, Tim. Very professional work getting to the spot, killing the clock, finding the ball, and matter-of-factly signaling possession. And good job blocking out the shrill screaming of a high school game in a pressure moment. That's why you're there! -Mark
Thanks!
Good call.
Thanks!
Mechanically, I would be wider if I was the BJ and the LJ should be breaking down field with the snap to get eyes on everything that you described. I think I'd pass on KCI and even though R9 throws a block, the BJ likely didn't see it because of his angle, and it appears as if he is watching the recovery of the ball. If he is wider and the LJ is down field, maybe it gets caught but it is pretty bang bang. Good job killing the play when R recovers. R gives up the right to advance with the fair catch.
Thanks!
By the book. Great job Marc.
Good advice. Sometimes coaches just want to feel heard.
