To be perfectly honest. The recap jobbies sound muffled with a massive loss in output volume. Were the mid & high controls on the speakers all set at the same level?. The recap job has gone awry somewhere!. Clarity & openeness all gone. Did you remove the original caps & put new ones in, or wired the new caps in parallel with the originals?. The sphaghetti wiring ought to have been changed with thicker cabling. Electrical energy travels along the outer part of a wire!. Sounds like too much capacitance in the works. Oh, by the way, using the wrong deoxit for pots!. Also too much acoustic wadding robs your speakers of bass output!. That one is for switches & relays etc. it’s the green one for pots. The comments here show how much ignorance exists in people with regard to sound quality!. From an electronics engeneer.

The outside pair that you say sound better is all original with the “spaghetti” wiring and original caps. I applied the deoxit to in the Lpads in this pair also. I did a follow up video and addressed some of the things you brought up. I even changed out the original pair of L100’s and replaced with Horizons for an AB test. Listening in person is truly the only way to hear the differences. But it does come through for the most part. As far as Deoxit vs Fader Lube. Is up for debate and there is no clear answer on the internet. There are pros and cons for each. But the fader lube is for conductive plastic faders and the D5 is a cleaner and lubricant. I do appreciate the feedback back but there is a nicer way to go about it man. Lastly, The crossover design in L100’s is a very simple design and it doesn’t take an electrical engineer to recap it.

@@Vintagejbl1i’m afraid there is no better way to go about it tbh. I have people bringing in audio equipment every day to the workshop for fixing. A substantial percentage of the gear has been “fixed” by the owners themselves. Quite a number who have watched a repair guide on youtube etc. But, unfortunately for them, their repair has rendered the kit beyond economic repair!. If they had just left things alone in the first place, and taken it to a qualified engineer things would have turned out diffrently. Then, you have to give them the bad news. Unfortunately, the internet is full of “experts”. The L100 you have are pretty good speakers. Jbl back then had a great deal more expertise in the field than diyers today. The internal wiring quality was an issue though. They had the knowledge as to crossover design etc back then, but chose the cheaper way of doing things. There is debate over the deoxit. But i use both types to be on the safe side, after all, it is not my own kit i am repairing. But i also use servisol products a lot, good products. I took those Lpads back out and sprayed F5 fader in them and am updating that on my newest video coming out. But I was under the impression that the Lpads in the JBL L100 were wire wound and not carbon so Deoxit D5 is safe. Well...the whole "studio monitors" nonsense is nothing but marketing BS. The only monitoring done in a studio is done with headphones, not loudspeakers, because of the open microphones. And in real life, the 4311 was seen mainly in the control room, sitting on the meter bridge of a mixing console, as an adjunct to the main monitors mounted in the soffit of the control room ceiling. While some engineering acumen is employed in the design and placement of main monitor speakers, the placement of meter bridge speakers is left to the whimsy of record producers, who generally lack any engineering credentials. Producers are more known for using pseudoscience and superstition, and not for engineering. The consumer versions of the 4311 are known as bookshelf speakers, because placing them up on a bookshelf is about as much care as is ever taken in their placement. Only a few years later, speaker stands became the preferred method for mounting such speakers. There is a scientific principle, known as "point source" behind this method that makes it preferable to using the wall as a baffle. The face of the 4311 cabinet does nothing to limit diffraction, as modern designs do. The most you can hope to do is control the bass response by careful placement. There is no replacement for displacement when it comes to bass performance. These little speakers aren't going to do the same job as speakers with a pair of 15" woofers, or a single 18" bass driver. But you still have a lot more woofer area and cabinet volume than the typical cheap "audio fool" speaker offers! It's a 3-way design, so it's better by design. By all means, keep these in circulation!

For me it's A. Two of my brothers have been professional drummers since the 60's, so the percussion gets my attention (whether I want it that way or not...), and the difference is definitely noticeable ; set A sounds closer to real life. I recapped one of my Centuries about a month ago and compared it to the as-yet unaltered unit by swapping the balance back and forth, and came to the same conclusion. I should have used a mono source; I'll repeat that comparison before I recap the second speaker. I'm now convinced that it's worth the effort and minor expense. Very interesting set of videos!

Kenrick sound has a very convincing video on how the “woofer” isn’t intended to be a bass driver but more so a full range driver and the tweet and mid range accent to the full range. Which is why they’re positioned that way I think jbl engineers very intentionally had them engineered for this purpose

@@actualadviceaudio you’re right about the woofer being more of a full range driver but it still is playing a lot lower in the bass frequencies. @@christophwjones you’re right they are always cheaper. But that’s a good thing. I think the L100 is more iconic because of it being the best selling speakers from that time.

Of the 4 variations of the 431x series the 4411 is absolutely the worst of the bunch. Just ask Bruce Sweeden who calls the the 4411 doggy doo doo. He just loves the original 4310 as do I. Also the original 'inline" L100 sounds better than the off set L100 you commonly see. The reason for the change in models was the LE20 tweeter had a rolled off frequency response to mimic the Altec 604 in a smaller box which was the dominant studio monitor at the time. However both originals --4410 and inline L100 had a seamless meld between mid and high sounding like a single driver. Part of the magic of those early models is the 'near' lack of cross overs which basically let all of the drivers overlap and sing out. Being an old guy I have extensive experience on all 4 variations as basically-- there was no other choice for 'portable' monitors back then.

@@keithmoriyama5421 I have the Inlines and think you’re right about the tweeter roll off being better. I will be doing a video in a pair I’ll be restoring soon. I’m also going to rebuild the inline crossover to spec. I bought all the parts last month. If you have any opinions on the crossover, let me know. As far as the 43xx series, I’m not a fan of the 11B and 12. But I do love the 4411

@@Vintagejbl1 Yes I also have the 4411 which is the final evolution and the best of all the 43-44 line. Got it at a steal. Good condition for $100.! Someone walked into my shop and offered them to me saying one of the speakers was dead-- no problem the components are worth way more. Turns out the problem was a cold solder point on the Xover. 5 minute repair! If you want a Super L100 don't use either tweeter. Instead find a pair of 'slots' -- JBL 2405 or 077 compression HF drivers. This tweeter is used in their higher line of studio monitors-- no sizzle, no sparkle just AIR-- my favorite HF of any make or model even today. I converted the inlines directly using these drivers without any mods to the cross over and they sound fabulous. The caveat being only the alnico drivers will fit into the box as the ferrite drivers are too big. If you do this mod I guarantee you will love the results. This will have the biggest change on your sound than anything else you can do. Even though my 4411's are a better speaker my moded inlines are way more fun and lively to listen to.

@@keithmoriyama5421 I plan on doing mods in the future. And making videos on it. This one you mentioned will be on my list. Having said that, I love the vintage JBL sound but I don’t say they are the best speakers ever designed. They have their flaws. Even though I’m very happy with the sound, The nostalgia has a lot to do with it for me. Also the right receiver or amp plays another role. 70’s Marantz and Sherwoods do it for me. I’m not high end. The 4430's are a bit of a JBL anomaly. They are a departure from the signature 'forward voicing' that JBL are famous for. They are smooth and round with a BIG dynamic sound. They are also a very accurate speaker. I used to use them in my 24 track studio.
