- Enjoyed watching me in Nor Nor Gully? Buy me a coffee: buymeacoffee.c... Join me as I tackle the Nor Nor Gully Scramble on Tryfan. A few years ago I published a video of the adjacent but easier Nor Nor Groove route, now I'm back for more.
This gully has three rises and the last one is known as the "Evil Third Rise".
In Steve Ashton's Scrambles in Snowdonia book, this scramble is rated as a 2+ and has a fun rating of 1 star out of 3. That sounds about right to me, I'm glad I tried this scramble but it's not the finest so I doubt I'll be back doing it again anytime soon.
Nor Nor Gully is sometimes used as a descent route by those lost on the North Ridge scramble, as you'll see from my footage, only experienced roped parties should descend this line as it's steep in places and often wet.

Great video, especially the drone shots-they give you a good topo of the gully! We did this yesterday in winter conditions-a mixture of stones, ice, and snow. It was quite exciting-most of us didn't even use the rope, except for the evil third rise. :)
By the way, there’s a much shorter escape route. You can mount the left gully wall (1.8 - 2m high), a couple of meters before the start of the ramp (the one leading to the evil rise) and go around via the heathery slope, rejoining the gully right above the rise. I would draw it on your video if I could.
Brilliant thanks I climbed Tryfan many years ago now I can’t believe I did
Thank you Dan for the great footage you put on here absolutely love it, you’re new Camera is brilliant the views are amazing keep up the very impressive work Thanks again ❤️
This can be a tricky route. I did it years ago and found it a real challenge. Don't think I would get up there nowadays. Definitely one for the more experienced.
Great video, well shot and informative. Always be prepared and willing to change your plan when in the mountains; sound decision Dan.
Great camera angle mate the 360 offers an interesting view on the scamble!
I thought so too, I just need to get the camera a little more stable as I had to cut alot of the footage out as it was making me seasick watching it back :-).
Good video, I love the drone footage, especially watching you climb whilst been filmed by drone.
Thank you!
Another great video Dan. I like your new camera and I never tire of the drone footage which I could watch for hours. I was up Bastow last Monday but I think it was a different day to you as I had sunshine (mostly)
Thank you. I love that Bastow, it's high up on my redo list :-).
Absolutely wonderful video, thanks very much!
The new footage/camera is good thanks. Gives a good sense of the exposure
I agree, it's great seeing the route in a wide angle with me in the middle of the screen.
*Oh, for a few weeks of unrelenting dry, sunny weather! I'm off work this week and the original intention - some weeks back - was a trip up to North Wales for some action. Sadly, the weather forecast grew worse as the time drew near. I'm now at home in Essex and in my kitchen watching yet another one of your excellent videos, the next best thing. My only complaint is that they're not longer. Regards, Carl*
Thanks. I know the feeling. I booked 4 days in a campsite a few weeks ago as the weather forcast looked good. I got one dry day out of it in the end lol.
@@thebaldscrambler - Bummer.
Mate, I love the stuff you're doing and find it really helpful. Please do keep going.
More routes coming soon, I've found an old abandoned scramble that I'm going to scope out next time I'm out.
Love the video mate. The 360 footage is spot on! I spend a lot of time in ogwen valley and tryfan so your videos are a god send too me ! Keep up the excellent work mate 👍
Thanks, I'll doing some more filming soon, as soon as the weather picks up.
@thebaldscrambler yeah it's been pretty rough so far this summer. It's a good few hour venture for me so waiting on some actual summer myself !
The new camera worked really well and does help to show what you are doing Excellent video as always, Les.
Thank you!
Evil rise looked greasy for sure! Did the Chasm face not long ago with similar conditions. Pray for better weather 🙏
What did you think of the Chasm Face? I know there's a catwalk en route, was it challenging?
@thebaldscrambler definitely great scrambling material. I didn't fit the chasm so doubt you will either. But the catwalk is definitely the highlight. Short section though
@@clogsonthemountain If you can't get in, there's zero chance I can lol ;-).
@@thebaldscrambler 😂😂😂
Good work, thanks 👊🏼
Great thanks
That looked steep 😮👍
And slippery, not the best scramble, probably won't do it again with so many great routes nearby.
@@thebaldscrambler 🙂👍
Enjoyed the video, but when you're not on screen yourself, it would be helpful to include something that gives an idea of the scale and gradient of what we're seeing. I don't know the place so I've no idea if an outcrop of rock is 3ft high or 20ft.
Amazing footage, it insta 360 is a cracking camera, great job
Thanks!
I've never done any scrambling, climbing or anything like that and never want to but I love watching these videos. I am curious about how you get down though. Do you just do the upward journey in reverse? That seems to me as if going down would be more difficult and dangerous than going up.
It depends on the route. Some easier routes *can* be reversed but it's usual practice to pick up a hiking path once you're ready to descend the mountain, regardless of how "easy" the scramble might be 👍
Rarely do I go down the way I came up, usually I just find a path and go elsewhere, maybe to another scramble or to the summit etc. After this one, I went to the summit of Tryfan and then down the West Gully back to the A5. I usually plan my day in advance with backup plans if the route is full of people or the weather changes etc.
Have you done the main gully before ?
Not all of it, done the bottom and the top before.
The actual G3 route has been the scene of many fatalities. Daniel perhaps edit the title to make it clear you didn't climb Nor No Gully G3 as the only G3 bit is the bit you (wisely) dodged?
I'm certainly open to suggestions, but do you really feel it's necessary? I just rewatched the video again and it seems I did a good job of accurately describing the "evil third rise," included some drone footage and a photo, and explained why and how I avoided that nasty bit. I guess I could change it to "Nor Nor Gully: Avoiding The 'Evil Third Rise,'" but do you think it would make any difference? Aren't most of the accidents from newbies trying to descend the NR to Heather Terrace? If you have a title suggestion, feel free to share it. Perhaps "Bailing Off Nor Nor Gully Before the Evil Third Rise" or something similar?
@@thebaldscramblerGood call. You put old pedantic Pete firmly back in his place 🤣😂🤣
Scrambling on greasy rock and loose surfaces looks extremely dangerous. Is it? Or does experience in fact give you significant protection?
what gopro mount are you using?
