Pokemon as a multimedia franchise has abandoned the roots in its games since after BW2. I fear that this beast has simply grown so large that it no longer _needs_ the games anymore.

I would enjoy a more grounded experience with immersive mechanics personally. Imagine this. You make your character and pick a starting location as your hometown. This would impact your selection of both starter- and wild Pokémon available in the start of your journey. Resources are more expensive, so you have to be careful and more selective about trying to catch new Pokémon, and commit to the team you build. While NPC trainer battles exist, they’d not be the old style of random people waiting for eye-contact - instead most would be tied to quests and tasks you take on for others. In towns and along some routes, there’s various facilities that host arenas for trainers to battle each other. Here you meet a handful of NPCs with strong teams to meet your level, but furthermore they’ll serve as a hub for online connectivity. As you enter the building, you also enter a lobby with other players on the same route in their games - and you can interact, trade and battle them. Gyms can be challenged in any order, and the gym leader will have several teams to play with depending on your level. This would also account for people starting out at different points on the world map. I’ve got some half baked ideas, but it boils down to making the player just another trainer in the world, and making being a trainer the main focus of the game by having other trainers in the world be more than just a character you beat in a route for some quick XP. They’d be your equals.

I like what you did, but I’m going to do something different in my own world building. In my own world building, which is connected to call of Cthulhu, the technology behind Pokéball is not new, what is somewhat new is the mass production of it; of course, since some of my games are going to be set in the 1920s this stuff starting to get mass produced might be within some peoples lifetimes. I would also have the PCs be different, Pokéballs don’t have any digital anything, what the PC does do is allow you to track your Pokémon, you essentially give them a collar and people can identify that it is in Pokémon that is caught; the collar method was probably the method most people used to train Pokémon before Pokéballs were available to the masses. I also emphasize that Poké balls are made materials that will eventually break down, like they’re actually made of apecrons and more modern ones are made of woodpulp.

I really like the Fairy's resistance to Ground, in reference to Faerie Forts and Fey Traps. This helps me think about how to manage my own typing system. Think I got it figured out now actually. With Sound/Ohm, God, and Nothing being the big debalancers, it should be perfectly balanced within the wheel, and perfectly imbalanced as a whole system. (God & Nothing are always monotype. God makes Sound, Sound fills the Nothing, Nothing beats God)

[Lore power] and [mechanical power] don't need to be linked (or [battle power] and [world power], for that matter), Ditto isn't an all powerful shapeshifter _outside_ of direct battles, and _even then_ it is _too fragile_ to really compare to most of what it would want to become. So the legendries can have powerful "field effects" that aren't super-helpful in the middle of a battle. The ability to raise small landmasses over the course of five-to-seven business days isn't going to help much in a twenty-minute battle, after all.

The closing notes, just Palworld. That game _lets you be evil,_ and in doing so has cause many players to become very compassionate towards those creatures. _If there is no potential for harm,_ and no consequences for what little cruelty does exist, then _people are less motivated to care._ The main reason people take evil routes is to see what is there, and they stop because the route is complete garbage from a writing and gameplay standpoint.

I don't hate the tall grass (though I don't love it either), the only problem I had with the invisible random encounters was in caves. The old pixel art style works wonderfully from both mechanical and artistic standpoints, and is where all of GameFreak's experience actually exists. I miss the metroidvania aspect of exploring the overworld in the old games.

D&D has magical beasts and mundane beasts, and not all of those mundane beasts are real world animals. Monster Hunter has complete ecosystems filled entirely with original monsters. So on, so on. You don't need IRL cows, pokemon esque approximations of cows that lack the ability to utilize moves and can't be captured is good enough to get the idea of "the separation of mundane and magical creatures" across, and use it as a handy excuse for why people can't be caught. It's the magical aspect of pokemon that allows them to be captured.

I think a good way to justify most people not having a full team on their person is that larger teams are harder to manage, so all but the most skilled trainers usually stick with two or three at most. Maybe this could be shown in gameplay with a team synergy mechanic or something? What if Poke Balls had some kind of digital display that shows the Pokemon they contain in their simulated environment?

  • @stripeback2024
    @stripeback2024 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

If we want players to use their imagination, we should just make the battles text-based! Jokes aside, I think Pokemon Battle Revolution did it the best. Every Pokemon had an animation for projectiles, taking damage, etc and the game would combine them with various camera tricks and visual effects. For instance, Thunder Punch focuses on the attacking Pokemon as it dashes forward and does a "punch" animation, then cuts to the opponent's "damaged" animation with an electric effect added to both. It still holds up really well despite being from an 18 year old game.

I'm not sure why you think Pokemon Go's appeal was due to only having Gen 1 at first and not, I don't know, the whole concept of Pokemon in the real world? Anyway, I prefer the more stylized/cartoony look. I think it does a better job at making Pokemon look like more than just wild animals with superpowers.

So about after the 4th reset you realize that you aren't meant to win that fight. It'd be interesting if Pokemon implemented that

On the idea of perfect imbalance and how it affects the metagame dynamics: We're gradually experimenting with this with Fire-types. Fire-types were considered a bad type generations ago, but that all started to change with the introduction of Fairy-types. Fairy-types were designed to balance out Dragon-types, which were too strong. Soon Fairy-types became the most powerful type, which led to Steel-types starting to emerge as a counterpoint. In the last few generations, Steel established itself as the best type, but now in Generation IX, Fire-types have emerged as a counter to Steel-types with the bonus of resisting Fairy-types, making them a good type in the metagame. I predict that by Generation X, we'll see Ground-types emerging as an answer to Fire-types and Steel-types, and then Water-types as an answer to Ground-types and Fire-types, etc.

My only issue here is that it's established that Bill jury-rigged the PC item storage to store Pokémon, not the other way around. That's why when you access it, it's SOMEONE'S PC or BILL'S PC. You're literally accessing Bill's own server in the item storage system, which he's set up to be able to accommodate Pokémon, or more likely, to accommodate Pokéballs as an item and read their data to show you details about the Pokémon inside. Lore-wise, I'd assume Pokémon can't be easily duplicated because it's set up to store the item of "Pokéball" and then *access* the data inside it. The data about the Pokémon isn't in the PC at all, but rather just that there is a Pokéball there that the PC can read from for more info. Duplicating the data of a Pokéball just gives you an empty Pokéball, or possibly a corrupt one because it expects to find certain data inside it but doesn't. This may even be the origin of BAD EGG, simply the way Bill has programmed the PC to display Pokémon information that isn't valid.

Your analysis of Team Galactic is quite too harsh honestly. Cyrus hides his true goals and that’s just part of his character: he doesn’t trust anyone but himself, thinking the human spirit is incomplete and flawed. But he does present an altered version of his goal to his subordinates, using the vague phrasing of « creating a new world ». Furthermore, it definitely seems like Team Galactic operates more like a brainwashing cult than a proper criminal organisation, so obviously it’s part of the plan to keep everyone in the dark. As far as actions go, because of their unclear motives, the grunts and commanders do questionable stuff that may or may not be related to Cyrus’s real plan. But what they attempt to do, they succeed in (except the very end). They wanted to siphon energy from Valley Windworks? They did, Mars battling you was basically just a way to buy some time. They got the information on myths they needed, they managed to blow up the lake and find the three Lake Spirits and at Spear Pillar, were you not the strongest teenager in the universe for God know why, Cyrus would’ve fully taken control of the literal DEITIES OF SPACE AND TIME and rewrote the Universe. Him giving you the Master Ball or information isn’t out of character or stupid. Of course it’s convenient for the player, but Cyrus is a reserved and pretty respectful villain towards his opponents. He also has no reason to believe a mere child would be able to stop him and this point, so giving you a Poké Ball he doesn’t even intend to use doesn’t matter to him. Same with him letting you free the Lake Spirits. Team Galactic has built the Red Chain already, to them the Spirits have no purpose anymore. For the soul part, and how they even got followers in the first place, it’s heavily implied that Team Galactic has a front cover as an energy/research company, and has a clear presence in Sinnoh’s landscape and media. They have TV ads, and while most Teams have hidden lairs, every Galactic building is a flamboyant futuristic skyscraper no one can ignore. Sure, the reasons leading Cyrus to develop Team Galactic are weak, but I firmly believe that a villain doesn’t always need a complicated or compelling backstory to explain why they ended up like that. Some people are just wrong sometimes. After the Leader disappears, Saturn does learn. While Mars and Jupiter are nowhere to be seen, he stays with the remnants of the group and puts an end to their criminal operations, trying to turn Team Galactic into a legitimate company that works for the greater good. In Platinum, we can stretches it a bit and say that Charon learns too. His lesson is that sometimes, grand speeches and complex plots aren’t the best way to be a scumbag and that being mad and hungry for power and money work quite well. Cyrus doesn’t have a story arc in Diamond and Pearl, but does have a hint of one in Platinum, deciding to reside in the Distortion World after being brought there by Giratina. Perhaps he realized that this empty world is the one he was seeking all along, and will find some peace. But I also don’t think every villain needs one. Team Plasma’s boss Ghetsis is often regarded as the best villain in the series for very good reasons, and he doesn’t have a proper arc or evolution. He’s a manipulative power-hungry psychopath in BW1, gets even worse in BW2, and after his defeat, is (according to the shadow triad) left completely catatonic. He’s not arrested, he never faces justice or atone for his crimes in any way, he just loses it entirely from a hatred and anger overload. Cyrus not snapping out of his delusions is his story arc. Sometimes you just cannot change someone’s worldview, no matter how hard you try or how solid your arguments are. I feel like Team Galactic is one of the most misunderstood Teams in the series and frankly fascinating, so excuse my rant.

I'd like to see a proof of concept for this even if it's a simple internet browser test. Some points to be made, the Base Stat System shouldn't be changed, and instead you should get normal progression with perhaps stat tokens or such every level or every other level which you can use to raise stats. Or perhaps a system of quests which if your pokemon accomplishes something it gets a buff to a stat or such. The 6 stat system allows pokemon to be very easily balances against one another, despite the fact game freak isn't a fan of doing so.

Something like the Battleground would be useful for balance. GF could gather data on each Pokemon's win/lose rates and buff or nerf them accordingly. We wouldn't need Smogon tiers to pretend our favorites are viable in battle anymore! I don't think having all Pokemon be a one and done thing is a good idea though. You mentioned ways for players to get a Vulpix if they missed not-Kanto, but those players still wouldn't be able to use one on their adventures. What you're suggesting is somehow _worse_ than Dexit.

Ooo, what if a version of the Pokemon League was devised by a king or queen or someone like that as a trial/rite of passage for their heir? A mastery of commanding Pokémon in battle is to be expected of royalty, methinks. The lords of each city would’ve been told to prepare a challenge for the heir - a unique test of wit that would become the gym puzzles, and of course a battle. The heir would go around challenging these lords, earning some sort of keepsake as proof of their victory. And the king/queen/whatever would then be waiting to challenge them themself to see how far their heir had come.

Hey, this is really cool! I've always thought that the Pokémon world has the start of some really cool worldbuilding - especially in the anime. It's great to see this worldbuilding expanded on here in this video - thanks for sharing this with the world!
