How I See it: Street Photography in Colour 2023
Great video, Hugh. I like how the street sweeper turned out in print. I've just picked up a Sigma 90mm to go with a Sony A7C II for a compact setup - looking forward to testing it out on the streets.
Thanks, again, Hugh. I don’t lose photographic motivation but I have recently become super motivated to document scenes of Americana - things from my childhood, non-chain standalone shops, hand-painted signs, etc. I look at them as architectural portraits. This focus has helped me channel my energy toward an unintended collection of sorts based on gratitude, nostalgia, and an appreciation for craftsmanship. Thanks for this and all your videos, Hugh. Your friend in Texas, Eric.
Great to hear Eric. Sounds like Edward Weston would be proud of you. Thanks as always.
2:03 Love the choice of blur with the sign and again with the “Slow Down” sign at 2:30. Really beautiful.
Thanks a million Eric
Though I did notice the 'camera police' and got pulled up quite a few times.
Hope you got some pleasing images anyway.
@hughrawson I did thanks, and I'll be back soon.......enjoy
Love that photo of the women on the escalator. Nice one! I am a keen photographer like yourself and like all sorts of photography. I left London 30 odd years ago but go back once a year. I was there a week ago and love shooting around the same area. What strikes me is the incredible amount of photographic opportunity in the city. I had a good couple of days and came away with some winners. The weather was also incredibly good so I could take advantage of shadows/highlights and the blue sky for colour shots. Good stuff!
You were lucky with the weather. Yes, you’re right, it is a fabulously rich place for photos - and it’s ever changing.
the bnw shots look great!
Glad you like them! Thanks so much.
Really appreciate your scene critiques. The discussion about the “5” photos was extremely helpful. And of course, the photo critiques are always great. I really like your border choice in these prints. My favorite print is the matte version of the girl in the tube. I thought you’d say more about all the other characters in the scene, though. Thanks for all you do, Hugh!
Glad you enjoyed it! I could talk for hours about the various characters in any given image - it’s not always a good idea! Thanks so much.
South Bank is always worth a wander, I'm more patient than you! ;)
Hahaha most people are! Thanks so much.
Another great video, subbed. Your channel deserves more views! really good to hear your thought process and post photo review.
Thanks for the sub! And the kind words. Both are really appreciated.
For me its why. Why do I want to make images?
Thanks Tony - do you always find an answer to that?
Thanks for this intelligent analysis of creative block, Hugh. I can see myself in at least four of your reasons.
My pleasure! Very glad it resonated David. Have you find some good routes round it?
Some nice shots fella, I live near Cambridge and seem to struggle getting close to people, I’ve got a Fuji x100v so getting near is a must. Guessing you’re shooting from the hip. I love that you printed them out too.
What a lovely camera. Yes you would need to get in close - but that’s often half the fun. You’re right, I do shoot from the hip a fair bit. I’m trying to do it less often but it’s very instinctive.
Subscribed. Hope to see many more videos on your channel in 2024 and beyond.
Thank you so much- plenty more to come
Good video again. I really like the format. And more importantly I really love your photos. Thank you for sharing this.
Glad you like them! Thanks for taking the time to say so. It means a lot.
Really well done! I really love how you edit in black and white (are the edited right? 😊)
Yes - they are edited. I usually go for deep blacks, crushing the shadows. Thanks so much.
The City affords lots of opportunities, Hugh, and you visited many of the locations that I tend to haunt when in town. For me, the running man outside Lloyd's was the pick of the crop, although all the other images were strong. The Breakfast Spuds picture was another I really liked. You certainly had a productive day.
@@daviddaw999 Thanks David - yeah, I think that was my pick too.
Are your annual books for sale?
I’ve never done that, no. So far, I’ve just made one copy for myself. Thanks for asking Eric.
Some folks may think 90mm is kinda long-ish... but that's the point: very tight framing. With wide angle lenses, sometimes you'll easily put more unwanted stuffs your frame. Of course, documentary-style street photography generally favors wide angle lens, and there's Saul Leiter/Ralph Gibson etc who make abstract-ish shots. Kinda different approach.
Yes - you’re absolutely right. I love the more abstract effect when there is time to frame up and use the 90mm properly.
You’ve been missed! My pick is the ladies at the coffee shop. Love the composition. Love the colors. I really like what you did with the colors in the subway station - especially with my favorite at 1:15. Welcome back and thanks as always for a wonderful tutorial.
Thank you so much! I think that’s my favourite too. Glad to be back. Stay tuned.
Good video 👍🏻🤩 Enjoyed it much
Thank you 🤗that’s great to know
Welcome back! I missed your videos and kept checking whether you released a new one.
Yay, thank you so much Joel - that’s great to know. Lots more in the pipeline!
On your way to 1K subscribers, well done Hugh !
Fingers crossed! Thanks Steve - hope all’s well.
Everyone looked downright miserable on the subway.
Haha yep! Hadn’t realised quite how thrown about you get until I watched it back.
I am surprised that the dog walker going past the red doors of the fire station failed to make the cut. Same with the skirted man - both are quirky images, and I like them a lot.
The dog walker was a close call. Maybe I should do a video of B Sides for the end of the year. The skirted guy was only caught properly on GoPro - I managed to miss most of his head with the camera! Schoolboy error! Thanks for the comment.
Great video but it really, really does not need the constant background music. Just irritating. Videos do not need constant noise.
Noted! Yeah. It’s one of the earlier ones and the sound went up to eleven. Glad you enjoyed the video - thanks for the feedback (pun intended).
Nice video. In particular, I enjoyed your explanations of your prints. Thanks
Thanks for watching! And for reaching out - very glad you enjoyed it.
I'm not a person who posts any comments in general... But this video and channel totaly deserves it! I'm shocked that you haven't a big count of subrscribers. And... your photos are just wonderful. They are about my preferred style of "street photography" with architecture beeing the greater structure that paves the lead to humans or their traces. Just subscribed and I'll be keeping an eye around here!
Thank you so very much - what a great comment to receive. It’s early days for me so any feedback really counts but please do spread the word if you’re enjoying it. So glad you like the photos - they are what it’s all about. Thanks again.
Excellent work, love your photography. Now subscribed!
Thank you very much - for the sub and your very kind words. Really appreciate it Jon.
Hope you don't mind if I nit-pick Hugh, does it not bug you that the football fan has a pole growing out of his head?
Haha it does now! It looks slightly like a crucifixion! I honestly hadn’t noticed it in the rush of the moment.
Watching this video completes the task of scrutinising your whole channel for me, so thanks for creating a really inspiring body of work. I eagerly await new videos.
Very glad to read that David - thanks so much for your kind words and hugely appreciated support.
Colour was absolutely necessary in Time Stands Still and A Shade After Twelve. You seem to take shots about something, rather than of something; they do a superb, narrative job.
Good to know! I talk a lot too! I think storytelling is a huge part of me. Thanks David.
Another great video Hugh. Really like the format of your videos; the studio intro, the street footage and then the print review outro. 😎👍👍
Glad you like them! That format seems to be getting a some pleasing feedback. Thanks for taking the time to say so.
Wow! London is truly no longer an English city. Sad.
I’m not sure how English it ever was - founded by Romans and always been home to a wide range of peoples moving through and staying.
Excellent!
Glad you liked it! Many thanks Eamon
I now shoot predominantly in b&w, although my camera also records RAW files. I seldom refer to the RAW files, except when the shot is so clearly about colour. For me, it is high contrast monochrome for at least 95% of my shots. This is a complete U turn on what I was doing 2 years ago.
It’s interesting how creativity and vision moves in cycles. I used to major far more in blacks and white - I just couldn’t get colour to work in ways I wanted it to.
The awning and umbrella shot is pleasing, but the cyclist going past Campkin's Cameras is the one I like most; the reflections on the paving are sublime. Having said that, the man with cardboard box did not appeal much at first glance, but the way the lines on the box echoed the joints in the sandstone of the hotel grew on me the longer I looked at it. The path that runs along the edge of the car park is one of my favourite haunts and you captured the light there so well. I sometimes venture towards the railway station and there is a covered pedestrian bridge over the lines that offers some intriguing composition opportunities. Have you ever shot there, Hugh?
Thanks for the detailed critique David. I vaguely recall that bridge over the tracks but it must be six to ten years since I was there. I’ll have to look again when I’m next up that way: Glad you like the awning image - that was v lucky. Mind you, I guess that if you wait long enough…
It's very interesting to hear about your thought process during the taking of the shots. The post-session analysis and printing of the favourite shots really serves to elevate your efforts from the vast amounts of street photography videos on TH-cam, so well done for coming up with something innovative
@@daviddaw999 huge thanks for the positivity David. I know from sharing images with friends online that listening to them critique their work is so illuminating. Thanks 🙏
Another great video, Hugh!! Thank you for sharing your work and thought process! Positive vibes and support from Texas, USA!!! Eric
Thanks so much Eric. That’s hugely appreciated - love having your support.
Hugh. Sorry but had to keep skipping through this video due to the extremely annoying and loud background music. Has it been there on your other videos and I hadn’t noticed, I am not sure. 🙁🙁
@@powelw Yeah that was an early one and I realised too late. Apologies. Thanks for the feedback.
I really enjoy my Tamron 70-300 for street photography. I can reach things I can’t get to. The vid was a little dissapointing tho. No clowns, no elephants, poor excuse for a circus….
Haha - yeah, it’s all health and safety these days! Glad you’re enjoying that lens - must be quite a size to give you that reach; heavy too?
@@hughrawson. Well, weight is the cost of getting what you want at times. I don’t really mind it, I prefer the invisibility provided by the distance. I do use the full range of the zoom, and provides the benefit of the range without having to carry multiple lenses.
Another great video Hugh !!
Thank you so much.
You have some interesting individual shots, but as a set they make a great statement about what Brighton is.
Very kind David - it’s always good to feel you’ve captured the feel of a place. Thank you.
What's the deal with all those tents?
Ha! I think it was a pro Palestine student protest.
Damn!
Great video Hugh. You are extremely creative with your photography. Hope it’s ok to nick some of your ideas when I go out at the weekend? Cheers. Wayne 👍😎
Of course! That’s what it’s all about, Wayne. Thanks for your kind words.
Superb images Hugh. Loving the videos. I am really pleased to have found your Channel. I am wanting to get into Street Photography and your tips are spot on. 😎👍
Great to know - thanks so much. Enjoy the journey .
What a wonderful eye - full of texture & composition - Cheers!
That’s very kind - thank you so much.
Hey Hugh, great shots for a single walk. My favorite is the 4 umbrellas in a row, but it wasn't included in the prints. Also, I prefer the blue and pink pastel version vs the b&w. Thanks for the printout analysis portion, that really is my favorite part. And I think you nailed a good length for this photo. Your 20 min videos felt too long, and a photowalk of more than 10 mins also felt too long.
Thanks so much for the feedback. I’m particularly glad you like the four umbrella image - I spent some time chasing them down the street but was never quite sure it worked. It’s good to know you think it does. Your comments about video length are really useful feedback. Thanks very much.
What kind of photographer does not enjoy a bit of bag porn? I don't (yet) have a Leica, but when I do I am going to buy one of those beautiful German leather bags designed specifically for Leicas. Oberwerth seem to create gorgeous bags. One thing I carry with me is a small spiral-bound notebook in which I can write down anything of interest, especially the What3Words location of places I may wish to revisit. I plan to have my own TH-cam channel and intend to give fellow snappers the precise locations of my shots, so noting down things is a necessity.
Thanks David - yes, those bags do look gorgeous. I’ve often been tempted but I already own way more than I need! I don’t carry a notebook but your point about locations is a good one. My camera does capture GPS but I also take shots of places I’d like to return to on my phone and also tag them with Google maps to revisit at a later time.
I really like and relate to your process. You’re much more patient than the snag and grab NYC street guys. LOVE the bridge shot of the punt passing underneath. My vote is for the color version of the lady with the umbrella. The limited color palette is a great unexpected catch!! Yes, the bicycle shot is a wonderful shot. Almost a still life. The framed umbrella shots are wonderful! I really like the raindrops. Thank you, again, for such a wonderful video.
Thank you so much for such a positive review. I’m glad you’re enjoying my little videos. I’m really just trying to reflect and explain how I see things so I’m very pleased they resonate with you.
These are streets that I also wander, so it was interesting to see what you came away with.
Thanks. - it’s always fascinating seeing somewhere well known through someone else’s lens.
