The Pitcher Who Physically Couldn't Throw a Normal Pitch
R.A. Dickey is the owner of one of the most bizarre careers in MLB history. After finding out he didn't have an ulnar collateral ligament, he lost out on almost a million dollars. Worst of all, this anomaly made his pitches decline in his early 20s, he need a change quick in order to save his career. Ultimately deciding to prioritize throwing the most difficult to master pitch in baseball, the knuckleball.

How Elly De La Cruz Is Rewriting MLB History
I forgot how often we lost to the Red Sox when I was growing up. Thinking back though they had manny and Ortiz on their team, two people who are known PED users which leaves me a bit more annoyed.
And the Mets screwed it up.
Good Mini-Doc bro 👍
Great pitcher. We beat him in ‘15 but i liked and respected him. Fun to watch !
Reinsdorf won't spend money to win until the team starts winning. Brilliant logic! He has also threatened to move the team if taxpayers don't buy him a new stadium. And the Cubs draw twice as many fans per game as the Sox. Time for Jerry to make that move! Cheers....
Changing ball speeds is dramatic to a hitter...I played mens fastpith softball , the mound is super close and the pitches are in the 80s etc... Anyhow I played in a slow pitch softball tournament during the fast pitch season...I came unglued swinging at those slow pitches when I was used to pitches popping the mitt the second it left the pitchers hand.
He’s the best lead off hitter in baseball history and it’s not even really close. Rickey is the all time leader in stolen bases, leadoff home runs, and runs scored. Ricky also had over 3000 hits, over 2100 walks and a career OBS over .400. I don’t think there’s been another player like Rickey Henderson. e was a NFL RB that turned out to be a HOF baseball player instead of playing football. He could have probably played both sports professionally at the same time like Bo and Deion if he wanted to, he was that kind of athlete.
As Tigers fan I got the pleasure to watch Miggy in his prime. Imo he is one of the best pure hitters to hit for power I’ve seen play . Never seen player hit for more opposite way power than Miggy .
My favorite player oat
I just watched a college kid hitting 85-90 on his knuckle.
Physics proved that is 100.9 mph fastball would equal 108.5 if recorded 10 feet after he let go of the ball, which is where all pitches are clocked today.
383 strikeouts is one of the greatest records in baseball because it happened during the first year of the designated hitter in the American League. None of his 383 victims with pitchers.
LOL, I’m texting him that thumbnail! We are coaches on the same high school team. He’s the pitching coach of course. No, none of our pitchers throw a knuckle ball (usually the first question).
This man needs a million subs. Keep up the good work. 🎉
Aaron just casually goes deep to center off Ryan.
Incredibly well-constructed video, I can’t wait to see the channel blow up! Keep up the great work!
This starting lineup of the Braves in the 90s taught me to love pitching the way Joe Rogan taught MMA fans to love grappling.
“And Advil is gentler on my stomach than Aspirin” Does anyone else remember that commercial. My friends and I love the way he said “gentler on my stomach” I think it was a common phrase of our for like a decade.
did I hear that right ? one of every eight knuckleballers are in the hall of fame ??
He's one of my favorite 😊
Maddox also benifitted from an extra 12 inches on the outside corner. It was maddening.
He’s the Mike trout of pitching
I stopped watching after his third baseman sacked that play worse then Roger Dorn 😢 #majorleague
One great guy. His Cy Young year with the Mets. I went to then Shea Statium for the game. I always show up early. On the way in I see two guys looking under a cars hood clearly trying to fix a problem.I drift over and notice the guy working with a screw driver and a Phillips in his back pocket. I recognized R.A. and other people gathered. All giving advice. Time passed and I asked Didn't he need to get to the game. Said he was almost done. Tells the driver to hit the gas and car started up right away. R.A. has a big smile on his face. Guy shakes his hand and R.A. heads to the park. He won the game but I'd swear his post game smile was not as big as when that car started up. P.S. Big Met fan but after that day a bigger R.A. Dickey fan.
That's the cool thing about baseball. Your size doesn't matter as much as other sports, at least in the US. I'm 5"7" and from Minnesota. I'll let you take a wild guess who's my favorite ball player ever.
The white sox had every piece of the puzzle laid out for them on a red carpet and fumbled everyone one of them.
Glad we had him for a short time in Atlanta!
The calling out “I got it” trick was actually very smart and sneaky.. doesn’t seem to break any rules.
Maddux could pitch in todays game where umpires are held accountable for their mistakes.!.
I was at that game when he tied that record. I had never heard of him before this. I was listening to sports talk radio on the way to the game. I told my "friend" that I went to the game with as we were walking into the stadium "nuckle ballers are funny. They are either on or they get rocked." Well... he got rocked and sent to the minors the next day. Ever since them I had to root for him. I kept an eye on him and was so happy he made it back.
A roid , liar, cheat, fraud.
This clown also owns the bulls.
Nolan Ryan was a bad dude.
Maddox was the beneficiary of getting that outside inch of the plate that was invisible to everyone except the umpire. Each postseason the strike zone got tighter, and the hitters were much more patient, looking for a pitch they could drive. Fouling balls off, driving up the pitch count, and tiring him out. In 10 Braves postseasons he was 11-14. He gave up 171 hits and 12 home runs.
Wby do his teeth look weird in the thumbnail?
Lol.... A rod didn't bench 300lbs for reps anytime in his career.. Let alone in high school. His first year with the mariners was only 1 year out of high school and he was tiny. Also him "being friends" with Jose conseco has absolutely zero bearing on him doing steroids or not. Jose was just a badass hitter who did steroids.. There were many of them. And thousands of others that he would've met who also did steroids. They were still extremely common back then in sporting circles and gyms just like they are today. You don't have to be friends witb Jose Canseco to have a hookup lol. Just like not everyone who ever did cocaine in the 80s was friends with Pablo Escobar lol
Except for T Gwynn. Tony OWNED Maddox.
2003 was the last time they made the World Series prior to 2009.
The "Larry Bird" of the MLB!
I'd say Tim Wakefield just barely edges out R.A, Dickey in terms which had a better career. Wake was often a key guy in the Red Sox rotation, his wins & losses were up and down but he always ate up innings (averaged 201 IP per season). Those innings eased the workload of the rest of the Sox rotation. Most, if not all, MLB teams would love a 4th or 5th starter who has a .526 W/L% over a 17yr stretch.
The entire Braves pitching line up was so deep in 90's Maddux, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz and Steve Avery, 3 out of the 4 being future HOF inductees.
Mets fan for 52 years. Watching his CY year was a whole lotta fun. I remember Phil Niekro and reading about the history of the game. Dickey’s control with that pitch was the best I’ve ever seen. Complete games with one or no walks ? That’s just incredible. At the time I didn’t know what he went through to get where he was. That makes it even more unbelievable. He’s a good man and I wish him nothing but the best.
It's been awhile but I feel like it was Greg Maddux that made me in Atlanta braves fan for a decade or so. He was the best part of an amazing pitching staff and I remember watching all of those near-miss playoff series with the braves until they finally broke through. It's still one of the best pitching staffs ever to
I miss Ricky
Maddux looking like Dirty Sanchez with that stache. Looks completely different.
I always loved his dry wit, dude was a secret comedian lol
Had no clue he was abused as a kid.. by two different people.. thats rough. I hope God has a special punishment for those people.
