- From 2014-2022 Jose Abreu was one of the most consistent first basemen in baseball never once finishing a season below a 117 OPS+. Then, in 2020 he won one of the most prestigious individual honors in baseball in the MVP award. But flash forward to present day and he posted just a 3 OPS+ in his first 35 games of the season. Resulting in being let go by the Astros despite being owed around 30 million dollars over the next year and a half. So let's look back on his incredible rise to fame, the struggles he had in Houston, and how he will finish his career as one of the best Cuban players in baseball history.

My conclusion is that Jose Abreu is forever a White Sox, so if the White Sox are absolutely terrible so is Abreu.

Is the title for real? Dude turned 36 when he signed with the Astros, the fact he was still good into his mid-30s is actually an outlier.
Idk he posted an 800 ops for his first 9 seasons and is a 1st baseman who don’t tend to age poorly until their late 30s-40s. Freeman is 34 but still putting up elite numbers
@@dodgershighlights4081 There's far more examples of this happening than not. Most players don't even make it to 36. Some other notable fall-offs: Albert Pujols (first awful year he was 37), Miguel Cabrera, Paul Konerko (also fell off hard at 36), Joey Votto (although had one last hurrah at 37). These are the best of the best.

@@kenw2225Pujols was ok as he aged though. During his time with the Angels he had a 108 OPS+ and 12.7 WAR over ten seasons, while he managed a 102 OPS+ and 4.6 WAR over seven seasons from age 35 until retirement.

I am an Astros fan, and as bad as his time with the Astros was, it was hard to see him go. A great human with an amazing MLB career.
As an Astros fan I express gratitude that he was able to help our team during the playoffs last year. He did struggle at the beginning of the season but woke up at the right time. I wish him the best in all of his future endeavors. He seemed like a really good guy (despite the man bun goatee hehe). Hay que seguir pa' 'lante como elefante!

He's a multi-millionaire. All in all, he had a successful career.
Keep in mind that Pito, as we Cubans call him, it's already an old guy for any sports (36 years old). And you know past mid 30s, if you don't take any kind of illegal substance, you are out of the game. I really enjoyed him playing baseball since he was in Cuba. My opinion is, get on a end-of-career special training and give one last try. If nothing works, retire.

Ironically when his average went up it was because he could no longer handle the fastball and he was just trying to make contact. Once pitchers figured out that he was couldn’t hurt them really bad anymore, he was done. Why bother throwing curves if he can’t hurt your fastball. Career over.

If anyone paid attention they would have seen it coming. His final year with the white Sox oh sure he hit over .300 but it was all singles to right field because he couldnt pull the ball anymore and his sluggling percentage plummeted. Like how Miguel Cabrera became his final couple years.
He had the second most doubles in his career in that year with the Sox
There is a reason two first Basemen won MVP in the 2020 season... if you were a great bat and you just so happened to get lucky enough you basically went on a hot streak for over half a season and with such a small sample size there wasnt really an opportunity to fall into a huge slump or vice versa to claw your way out of a slump... other positions which gain a lot of their value from defense were at a huge disadvantage cause defensive value increases with a larger sample size whereas hitting usually decreases 🤷♂️ that being said JRam was still robbed
I think there’s a possible reason he has fell off a cliff that maybe some of the younger generation doesn’t know about. It was quite common for South American and Cuban players to lie about their age and have documents faked for them by intermediaries in order to be more appealing to major league teams. One of the reasons back in the day the cardinals didn’t give pujols the contract the angels did. It was reported by mainstream sports writers of the time and of course pujols denied it but I never heard that stuff reported after that contract so maybe an unwritten rule was established. Abrue does look old for his age and doesn’t move very well so he could be 40+. Another reason that rookie campaign was so good maybe ? He was a seasoned veteran?

White Sox should offer him league minimum for one year, use him limited but you never know and he gets his ten years for mlb retirement purposes

Abreu was my in my dynasty fantasy team since I picked him up in his rookie season. Had a lot of fun with him and he was key to my season win in his MVP season. I really hope he finds himself again, he's such a fun player to watch.

There’s several MLB players that come to mind as far as severely declining in performance such as Javier Baez, Kris Bryant, Anthony Rendon, Dansby Swanson for starters. These four signed massive contracts and after that, they were and still are never the same player they were with their original team. Some players can’t handle the pressure with these huge multi million dollar contracts and play up to their expectations. Greed is one Hell of a drug for sure.
I definitely think you should’ve mentioned his uptick in production during the playoffs last year. Not only a bit unfair to him, but also very interesting on how quickly things can change.

His stint with the Astros will go down as one of the worst Astros disasters ever. Probably 3rd overall behind: 1> allowing Nolan Ryan to go to the Rangers over a relatively small sum, and of course 2> the whole Jose Lima debacle that lasted two complete seasons.

You can't make a video of Jose without mentioning how dominant he was in the Cuban league...nearly hitting .400 every year, and still holds few records to this day. He's a legend.

I was planning on making a narrative driven sports TH-cam channel. Which would basically highlight small stories most people weren’t aware of in a storytelling centric way. I think people would love content like that
What you didn’t mention was his absolute awful defense. The Astros can weather the storm when a player doesn’t get them many hits. But Abreu was consistently giving up 1 or more runs a game on defense. Look at the Astros record at the beginning of the season when he played, it was bad. Then look at their record for the month he went to the minors. They bounced back. When he came back for 3 weeks they went straight back into a slump. Then have been doing incredible ever since he was cut. 1 players batting average didn’t cause what I just mentioned. It was his defense, he gave up 6 runs one game. He had 7 rbis on the entire season and gave up 6 runs on errors in 1 game. Him being an automatic out certainly didn’t help either.

Notice how Cuban players look small/shorter in Cuban television, compared to USA broadcasting. This is a tactic Cuba uses to make their players appears short, to avoid scouts from the USA to get interested in Cuban players and to try to sneak them out of the country (which is the only way to play professional baseball if you are born in Cuba).

He is listed as 37 years old but a lot of the players born in the carribean nations lie about their age to get paid earlier/younger. He was born in Cuba so how would you verify? He is probably around 39 instead of 37.

Some guys lie about their age to get looked at and give a chance. They often fall off quickly at 34-35, but theyre really 37-38. Not for certain though, but it happens with guys from places where forging documents is easier

I always tried to keep faith in him turning it around when he played for the astros. The dude was a superstar. I just feel like he had a lingering lower back/hip injury that he hid from the team. He was literally getting blown away by every fastball 88-93 mph ones as well. He just couldn't catch up to them. He's set for life with free cash now so hopefully he enjoys retirement.

I literally was thinking what the efffd happened to Jose. Dam when i was about 20 i heard of this 16 yr old in Cuba who was tearing it up. Flash forward 20 yrs and bam he was in the league and hitting his azzz off. Now its 2024 and im like what is going on??? I was expecting big things over the next 3 to 5 years from him begining in 2021.

5:02 I watched this, Jose started punching himself in the face before he started talking. I never seen that kind of reaction from any athlete from any sport over an award like that. I recently learned a lot about Cuba, him winning that MVP made him a national icon with the cuban people. From Cuba to America is an extreme culture shock for some Cubans, imagine making it to the MLB and winning it's highest individual award. I'd be trembling with joy too if I was him.

I was a huge Abreu fan when he was with the Sox, and I was sad when they let him go. I wonder what the trouble is technically in his case. We see all the sabermetrics, but what actually happened with him?
Simply really, fast twitch. Just like when you can't run as fast or jump as high. He couldn't catch up to the fastball any longer. Instinctively you compensate by starting your swing earlier, which makes you look like crap when it isn't a fastball.
