250 Bird Challenge A Year in Review Part One - Loads of Birds!
I'm staying in an RV park in Summerfield, FL. As long as there is a little water in the water drainage pond, a Little Blue Heron spends a lot of time in the drainage pond stalking bugs. He doesn't seem to mind visiting white Ibis but tries to chase away Snowy Egrets.
L.U.S.T. ? Frisky, or is it randy? Video of a black and white warbler followed by “a bit disappointing”? You could show 50 videos of a black and white warbler and everyone would be oooing and ahhhing about the 51st, we’re birders for goodness sake!! 😊 love the series, your betting fiends from CA,,,
Haha just a joke about Sara and I, wasn't intended to be rude. Long time since hearing from you guys! I think we were a bit spoiled for Black and White Warblers. It's one of my favourite birds, but there's one in almost every Florida video.
I lived in Northern Arizona and frequently would see Bullock's Orioles, of all places, visiting my Hummingbird feeder. I strategically placed the feeder by my kitchen window with curtains just a few inches apart to not startle the birds with any movement on my part. A great way to enjoy a morning cup of coffee.
Sounds like a great way to start the morning. We would love to visit Arizona. Something we are considering for next year, possibly.
Congrats on getting the Least Bittern on camera! I know that’s not any easy thing to do! Great video!
Thank you!
I wasn't lucky on Red-cockaded Woodpecker when I visited Florida. I did get Pinewoods (Bachman's) Sparrow at Hal Scott Regional Preserve and Park on that trip.
Nice. We didn't have much luck with the several Sparrow species of Florida. Not sure if it was timing or, more likely, our attention being drawn to the slightly more "exotic" species 😆
Impressed you got great shots of that Marsh Wren. They never seem to come out of the reeds for me!
That's generally our experience, too. There's a couple of spots closer to home where I find they are a little bit more "showy", though!
Another cool video! Is there a list somewhere of where and when you have been?
I keep meaning to do something useful with my website but never find the time for it. I don't have a list. Most of our time is in Southern Ontario, Canada. This year we have also been to Michigan and Florida.
@@BritHikesOntario I'm enjoying all of the videos. Really makes me want to get to Florida. And back to Michigan, now that I am a birder.
Thanks so much for sharing another wonderful video like always 🤗👍
Thank you 😊
Here in the semi-rural area in the New Territories of Hong Kong SAR, we occasionally see a Yellow Bittern combing the mangroves area at the beachfront promenade.
+5 birds in this video, well done! What time do you start birding in the day?
Thank you Tracy. Five birds is pretty good and if we could do that every week, we'd find our way to 300 in plenty of time. Not sure it will be quite that easy, but let's see! I think the best time to bird is just after dawn. Basically, once the sun starts to hit the trees. That was pretty easy in Florida, where the sunrise is no earlier 6:30am (because it's closer to the equator). In Toronto, it can be closer to 5:30am. A bit harder!
I love the birds They make me aware of everything around the trees the type and clarity of the water the seasons and even warn you if danger is around The wourld would be a lot better place if birds were considered more Thanks for the videos they are for the birds, A phrase that should mean the opposite😊💕🌴🦤🌳✌
Birds are awesome :) Fun, beautiful, interesting, smart. Unique animals.
Lake Apopka was a highlight spot for me when I was around there in March. I arrived on a day when the wildlife drive was closed, so I ended up just walking part of it. Kinda unnerving with the alligators around, but they didn't bother me. I didn't see Least Bitterns there, but I did briefly see an American Bittern there! I've never been fortunate enough to get photos of either Bittern species so it was very cool that you did...twice! And the fulvous whistling duck is awesome too! I didn't catch that when I was there.
I'm guessing you turned back at some point? It's a pretty big area and we didn't even drive all of it. We were really lucky with the Least Bitterns. There's actually three..haha. I didn't notice this until I was editing, but if you watch back the first clip with the initial sighting, towards the end, you can see movement to the left in the reeds - another Bittern. We had no idea at the time.
@@BritHikesOntario yes I walked about 4km and turned back. I thought I saw movement in that shot but didn’t look closely. Very cool!! 3 least bitterns is more least bitterns than I’ve ever seen 😅
Bummer with the Red-cockaded, and no Bachman's Sparrow either it seems 😞But you got your cute ducks and good views of the Least Bittern, and since there's one more video left, maybe there's hope still for those Pine forest specialists🤞
We didn't have much luck with sparrows. In addition to Bachmans, Florida opened up the opportunity for Henslow's, Saltmarsh and Seaside as well as a couple of others that are also in Ontario but perhaps a bit harder. Oh well! Hopefully we can still make 300. Summer tends to be a harder time for us to get out birding, so we will see.
Least Bittern... Swamp Sparrow.... Epic! I've seen a Fulvous, but it was considered as a probable escapee. When you have seen so many previous It is awesome to get just one lifer in a day! Just an off the cuff question. Do you believe that the Ivory Billed Woodpecker might still survive in perhaps the deepest of the Louisiana swamps?
I'm afraid to say I don't. But I've joked with birder friends about making a series of videos in Louisiana looking for it and dragging it out for years... kinda like "The Curse of Oak Island" (if you've heard of that). I think there's enough experts around who have been looking for it for years, enough ebirders, enough people with various types of camera from mobile phone, to stationary wildlife, to high end cameras and everything inbetween.... that it's likely we'd know about it by now. I've never been to Louisiana to know exactly how much of it is relatively untouched, but I'm guessing in The USA, in 2024, the answer is not much. With that latter point in mind, I did once mess around with inaturalist (if you're not familiar - it's like eBird but for any living organism) to see how much had been reported in Louisiana at all and how much unreported space there was. This is a map of sightings of any organism at all, at any time, ever reported by users in Louisiana: inaturalist.ca/observations?place_id=27&subview=map
Very cool shots of the bittern! Love the florida video's!
Thank you! Nice to see its beady eye! 😂
Beautiful footage of the snow falling!
Thank you Ryan
Wanted to let you know the bird you thought was a swamphen was actually a purple gallinule. Cool native Florida bird, smaller and different face shield than grey headed swamp hen .
Well now I realize other people already commented the same so sorry to bother haha. Great video👍 really cool footage.
Thanks Olivia, glad you liked it. Yep, feel a bit silly about the Gallinule. Pretty basic oversight. I blame myself for rushing the edit! 😊
Thanks for your videos in Florida. You have been giving me place to go birding. I’m moving to Florida in a few weeks.
Oh nice! Good luck with the move 👍
Thanks so much for sharing another wonderful video like always 🐦♥️🤗
Thank you, Miguel 😊
Hope you make it to 300 but as always, enjoy the journey not the destination, good luck 👍
Thanks Charlie, we're working on keeping that balance. I don't think we would have necessarily had a trip to Florida without the challenge and there might he another trip later this year, so we are definitely trying to make the most of it 😊
Great video as usual! I saw exactly one Limpkin on my recent trip to Florida - at Disney Springs of all places! I previously saw the Limpkin at Wheatley Provincial Park in December.
Very cool to see it in Ontario 👍
Nice video, inspiring,thanks for sharing
Thank you! 😊
Great video again. I was fortunate to see a Lipmkin right here in Michigan last year. I heard there was several in different locations and lucky for me it was 20 minute's away. It was hiding in bushes when I first saw it. Then it was scavaging a few yard's away from the porch of the Nature building. I heard and saw a yellow throated Warbler but couldn't take a picture of it do to the tree canopy. One of my favorite places to walk I saw a marsh sparrow, marsh wren, sedge wren and near by I heard 2 Henslow Sparrow's but they didn't wan't their picture taken. I also saw a few day's ago my first ever fish crow.
Swamp sparrow
Thank you Susan. Limpkin in Michigan is pretty special! Birds not wanting to be on camera. Story of my year lol 😆
That grey headed swamp hen is a purple galinule at 5:27
Indeed, a few people have mentioned it. Complete oversight by me, beginners error! Oh well!
I think that is a purple gallunule at 5:30, not a gray-headed swamphen. This looks like an amazing place! Maybe I will visit it someday...
Yes, mentioned elsewhere in the comments. Very poor oversight by me!
Hi. I love your Florida bird videos. We also have Egrets in Hong Kong 🇭🇰 SAR, along with Lesser Egrets, Chinese Egrets, and Great Egrets. They are especially plentiful in Hong Kong’s Mai Po Bird Sanctuary.
another great video buddy!
Thanks Nige
My favorite bird was the roseate spoonbill. I also recently saw a limpkin at a nearby lake.
It's a pretty cool bird. Thanks Nathan!
I am thinking that could be a purple Gallinule
Yep, my bad. Not sure how I managed that, because Purple is my favourite of the three.
Yes at 5:30 it is a purple gallinule due to the yellow on the beak the grey swamp hen does not have hello and indeed has a grey crown
Is that not a Purple Gallinule at 5:30, not a Gray Headed Moorhen?
I don't know what a purple gallinule is, but this is Definitely not a gray headed swamphen
That was my first thought also...just saw one in mexico earlier this year....looks like a purple gallinule to me also.
Yes, my oversight, Purple Gallinule
@@traveltounwind3490 I live on the other side of the globe so I did see the gray headed swamphen which is a vagrant to my country, I didn't yet go birding in the new world but I already feel like I know a lot of species from there
Congratulations on the Limpkin you know its related to Limp Biscuit right? LOL Its amazing that the Gallinule is a spot on lookalike to the British Moorhen. American Coots are almost exactly the same as British ones except for the small red cob on its head. Spoonbills were beautiful. Lovely video as normal guys. Keep up the great work :)
You may have seen me say this in an early Florida video, but they were the same species up until relatively recently. Thanks again, Marcus 👍
😊💕🌴🦩🌴👍
😆
I'm excited for this one. I went to Orlando but I didn't visit wetlands there because I had most of the waterbirds. I need the land birds.
Nice. Glad you got great views of the Limpkin.
Thanks Cliff
Awesome video, especially the voiceover sections with all the info!
Thanks Ryan, appreciate it 👍
My wife and I are annual visitors to Canaveral/Merritt Island and can attest it is an awesome place for birding and natural beauty in general. We drive the Blackpoint at least once every December and often twice during our visit. It is best appreciated at a near crawl for much of the trip as there are so many nuances to the experience that can be otherwise missed. (just leave room for the numerous less-than-patient drivers to get around you and proceed on their way...at times, there does seem to be an abundance of those who expect a more Disney-like experience and lack the ability to carefully find the thrill rather than be hit over the head with it at a dazzling pace.) We originally visited this area for the Kennedy Space Center, but were drawn further in, first by the excellent beaches and then more so in discovering the numerous nature trails and sanctuaries. There are exceptional opportunities for viewing from canoe or kayak as well. Your video is excellent and the photography quality is enviable. Very enjoyable.
Thanks for watching and your comment. Yep, it's a great spot. Fairly quiet when we were there, thankfully. Certainly a place worth revisiting if we are ever back in the area.
Intresting journey
Thanks!
Wonderful
My daughter loves the green and tri colour herons. And I think the snail kite was so neat to see!
Thanks, me too. Reddish Egret is probably my favourite, though, the way it dances around 😆
Great looks of the Florida Scrub Jay! So cool
Thanks buddy 👍
Fantastic, loving this series of vlogs, just wandering, did you stay in different locations or stop in one spot, you really do have me planning next year’s holiday
Thank you Alun, appreciate it. We stayed in different locations most nights. We were heavily focused on birding, so we just stayed on the outskirts of urban areas in chain hotels. The exception was The Keys where you don't have much choice but to pay a bit more. We stayed there for 2 nights due to our daytrip to The Dry Tortugas. And we stayed a little longer in Orlando because we spent a couple of days at the theme parks there - pretty much the only non-birding days. I'm in the fortunate position where Sara is very good at the planning and research aspects. Our plan was to begin in Tampa and generally move counter-clockwise around the state. We went to each general area with an idea of what we wanted to see based on reports from other birders and naturalists (blogs, EBird reports from the same time in 2023 etc...). But we occasionally adapted our plans based on weather or more recent birding reports. Hope you manage to get out there. Would recommend it.
@@BritHikesOntario Thank you so much, that so helpful. I’m a nightmare with organising, after watching your videos I’m already making all the locations on google maps, let the planing begin 🤣 thanks again
I really enjoyed the Black-bellied Whistling Duck for some reason. Just a sharp looking bird haha. The Florida trip has been great so far!
Yeah they're pretty cool. Maybe not an absolute Florida favourite, but definitely one we wanted to see and we're happy to get.
2 lifers in one day and the Sora was special. Well done guys.
Thanks Marcus 😊
That was great footage of the sora. I remember seeing one at a lake in Florida during the winter.
Thanks Nathan 😊
Cool video! I live in western Washington and have been birding for about 5 years and just saw my first Bullock's Oriole a week ago.
Thanks Richard. Congrats on the Bullock's
Great Video. If you want to get some cool birds east of the Mississippi, I would recommend Sax Zim Bog in Minnesota. In the winter you could get Great Gray Owl, Northern Hawk Owl, Boreal Chickadee, Snowy owl, etc. In the summer you could Great Gray Owl and Connecticut Warbler, etc.
We've been considering this and it may happen later this year
Thanks so much for sharing another wonderful video like always 🐦❤️
Thanks Miguel 😊
Hello Stu and Sarah, Just wondering how long you spent in Florida (maybe you're still there?)? Great videos.
Hi Sam, we are back in Ontario now. We spent just over two weeks in Florida. Went birding most days with 2 or 3 days doing other things.
@@BritHikesOntario Thanks, that's a great amount of time for birding! Good luck on 300.
Yet another great video with more birds I'd like to see 🙂 What's the camera and lens setup that you use for your pictures and videos?
Thanks Andy Using a Nikon Z6ii with an F mount Nikkor 200-500 attached using the FTZ adapter.
Congrats on your 2 lifers! 😊
Another great video! I was at Merritt Island back in March and it was awesome! Too bad you couldn't see the Flamingos. I saw them when I was there, but at quite a distance! Still a very cool lifer. Congrats on the Sora and the Clapper Rail! I've never seen either! I have occasionally tried to find Soras here in Ontario, but so far without luck!
Funnily enough, I saw my 2nd Sora in Ontario not long after we got back from Florida (at Point Pelee) - so it is possible! Hopefully we don't end the year on 299 birds with a missing flamingo 😂
@@BritHikesOntario Haha true! I'll have to keep searching!
