- Birding across Florida in Part Six of our search for Florida birds.
We're trying to see as many birds as we can to add to our 300 Bird Challenge before the end of 2024.In this episode we look for birds in a couple of locations around Key West, then we go birding in The Everglades and a couple of quick stops around Homestead/Miami.

As you have mentioned, I checked on GOOGLE, it indicated that the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, whose members are collectively referred to as kingbirds. Its scientific name used to be Muscivora forficata until it was changed to Tyrannus forficatus.
We have the Daurian Redstart in the New Territories of Hong Kong 🇭🇰 SAR in and around the semi-rural areas.
I'm terrified of snakes. But I thought that ratsnake was quite beautiful, especially from the safety of being behind the screen. Amazing video as usual! Love the Florida series!

@@BritHikesOntario That's a good problem to have haha. Let it stretch out and get ahead of the game for a bit. Makes things much more relaxing than living video to video haha.
Catching the Atala was a good score, imo, but it doesn't add to the bird count ofc...

I love the Florida series. I was there a couple months back and I'm returning in December and will hopefully get some more for my Florida list!

Love the Butterfly's and love the curly tailed lizard, did not even know they existed. The great thing about birding is that you have a number of different ways to identify birds. Song, Jizz, Plumage etc. Myself personally, I also don't count a bird on my list unless I have seen it. Was lucky enough to see a spotted sand at Chew Valley lake a decade ago, but the chances of seeing a Scissor Tailed Flycatcher are somewhat non existent lol.
The 300 Bird Challenge is a bit different... just by the nature of it being a kind of Vlog/Documentary, we have to get birds on camera.
But back in the slightly more real world, for our own personal life/year lists, seeing it is enough for us to count it.
So sometimes the 300 Bird Challenge will diverge from my personal list. Prime example being the Bridled Tern that I saw in the last video, but didn't get on camera.
We don't count Bird calls/song for our lifelist and we don't count them for our "First of the Year". But if we are confident, we do tend to count bird song/calls on our EBird lists so long as it isn't a first.
Everyone has their own rules and I know some of the record holders (such as Arjan Dwarshuis) have counted just hearing a bird.
But the above is what we go by.
Just thought I'd share that bit of a ramble lol 😆
BTW, Scissor-tailed is a bit of a nemesis because we missed one by a few miles turning up in Ontario a couple of years ago. So I was most annoyed at hearing this one but not seeing it.

I didn’t know that Florida has COYOTES …. 😳😳🧐🧐🤔🤔
Coyotes are found almost everywhere in North America south of where you would find wolves. Although it gets a bit messy once you start finding wolves because the two species hybridise. I'm not sure about elsewhere, but here in Ontario, it's hard to find a genuinely pure wolf that doesn't have at least a little coyote in it.

Hi, is / are there any local Florida birds species that DO NOT migrate out of Florida NOR out of USA ?
Hi Mark, sorry, missed your comment. Florida Scrubjay is the only species that is only found in Florida. There is a Florida Grasshopper Sparrow, too. But that is a subspecies, not a full species (we only count full species on our 300 target).
Too bad about your slightly disappointing bird day - Florida is usually pretty forthcoming. But every day is a new day. At least it makes me feel better about the slim pickings I've been having recently.
To be fair, Florida was good to us. We only had maybe 2 bad birding days and clear weather almost the entire trip 👍
@@BritHikesOntario The Everglades were actually my first real birding experience, long ago. Anhingas, purple gallinules, glossy ibises -- it was a feast. I remember being chuffed when I identified a reddish egret in the surf, my first spot. I hesitate to go back there now because of the politics.
Reddish Egret is awesome. Got to watch them dancing around a couple of times.
I know what you mean about politics. I've been hesitant in the past, but I visit more often now. I wouldn't let it stand in the way of any travel dreams you might have.
We didn't see too much in the way of politics. The occasional giant flag hanging off the back of a pickup truck, as you might imagine. But we were there in late April. Might have picked up as election stuff gets closer.
Are there any birds you are especially hoping for when you get to the Space Coast?
So far in this series, we still haven't seen a Limpkin or male Painted Bunting (might be too late for those). Blue Grosbeak is still high on our priorities and basically any new shorebirds that we haven't yet seen. Or any of the rail species.
@@BritHikesOntario Limpkin are not uncommon in the area. I assume you're going to the Merritt Island Refuge, so I expect you will find some there. When you are up that way, make sure to detour to the Kayak launch next to the Haulover Canal for a long distance (1/2 mile) view of American flamingo. (The optics will be better in the morning.)
@@BritHikesOntario If you are travelling up US-1, the old downtown Eau Gallie area of Melbourne gives you a good chance of blue-crowned parakeet. Just stop at Pineapple Park and listen to find them. Another worthwhile detour from US-1 is the Cruickshank Scrub Sanctuary in Rockledge. Florida scrub jay is almost a certainty there.
