Looking at You
Back in 2016 I had an art exhibition called 'Between Two Worlds', about NASA's New Horizons mission to Pluto and beyond. The curators convinced me to leave a guestbook at the show. A couple of weeks ago I made a little song about it as Hot Pink Halo for the Spintunes songwriting competition, and yesterday's Artquest prompt was to think about documenting your work in a different way, so I finished up a little video clip for it this morning. The song is called 'Looking At You'. I'm pretty proud of this one, so will re-record it and release it officially at some point, but for now, enjoy.

Making typewriter ink
มุมมอง 5789 หลายเดือนก่อน
Pushing two years ago now I needed to type for an art project, but my typewriter ribbon was old and dry! New, appropriately sized typewriter reels and ribbons are hard to come by, so I decided to have a go at making my own. A lot of the tutorials out there show how to re-ink using water-based ink, but traditional typewriter ink is oil based, and I needed it to be oil based for my particular pro...

Make a book cover with a hard or soft spine

Make a book cover with a hard or soft spine
Being applied by brush, this paint looks awesome! Wasn't it able to just spray it or was this just everything you had laying around? I used to do some 'lowrider' layerings, check that out. It is able to do that work to guitars too. Guitar looks ace, dude!
Would soy sauce also work for de-oxidizing an old plate that's already been etched?
This reminded me of the artworks we did as kids using oil pastels to deposit colour and pencil to transfer. It turned out really good 😊
Where did you buy the kit. Who makes it? Great video
@@LeeHuff Thanks. This kit was from Thomann.
Haha, it’s not tree sap, it’s the secretions of the Lac bug. It’s bug butt juice. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shellac
I would have put the book on first, then the weights for more even pressure
Great job!!!!. I'm like you, I use what I have on hand. I have a can of primer like the one you use and it says to only use on porous surfaces. How is the pedal doing after 3 years? Is the paint holding up? Regards and thank you very much.
Hi Leonie, may I ask whether you off-load the roller at the end of each printing day, or do you keep the roller on the blankets set to the printing height overnight? I plan to print a larger edition, and anticipate printing over a 7 to 10d period. Thanks!
@@greeniearts Hi, if it was overnight and I was editioning, I’d probably leave it. 7-10 days is a long time to leave blankets though. I’d probably play it safe and reset the press each day.
@@SpinesAndSplines Got it!--thanks so much!!
A tube a month LOL
It's a good, natural way to clean the plate, thanks.
This is a great project as the material requirements are things many of us (probably) already own. I can see see inserting collage papers, and gel prints (in a book of a different utility that is).
Music is too loud
Are there any particular measurements that you use in creating the ink? It looked rather like you were eyeballing it - but I would appreciate measurements for the oil and the ink/paste. Thanks!
Thank you for this!
Great work 😊
Is just charcoal or activated? Thanks for the video
That is a great and very easy way to bind a book. I do the stitching though the other way round, which means that I insert the needle to the middle hole from the outside in order to have the final knot on the outside of the sketchbook and I also leave a quite large tail that I "braid" into something like a kord to use it to keep the sketchbook closed.
Danke mein Schweitzer!
Thank you, this has been bothering me for quite a while.
Thank you for your venturing in. Learned so very much.
Hi! Can i use shellac sealant with sketchbook paper?
You can also buy a screen roller which is much easier and a lot quicker to complete than by hand.
Can u use inches and feet, mm and cm hurt my ears...
Sorry, no.
2024 and if people dont feel stupid for being lied to and treated like abused animals then you dont deserve to craft. you didnt say why these ingredients were necessary so i dont know why i have to go buy 'lube'. if you cant get self lubed youre doing it wrong
They're really tasty fried in butter and garlic, the faint taste of ink afterwards is actually surprisingly nice.
Thank You.
Can I ask why you're using machine oil over any other oil?
Thanks for your comment. I used machine like because it’s pretty neutral, stable and it won’t gum up.
I followed the steps as closely as I could and it didn't work. with black paint water. Did anyone one else actually try this and it worked?
Will the Golden gesso stick to aluminum well?? I find it hard to believe that it will have a long life.
These aluminium painting panels are treated in a way that helps adhesion. It’s not just a regular piece of aluminium, but something produced by an art supply company specifically for painting on. If you’re wanting to paint on a regular piece of metal, you’re best off using a metal specific primer. That said, I have used regular gesso on regular metal, but I would only do that if I was making something for myself.
This is a wonderful video with clear explanations. Thank you for sharing the different size and orientation versions. Please consider, if possible, removing the very irritating music. It’s a huge distraction. To anyone with hearing difficulties it’s also too loud. Makes it hard to hear past it. To some of those with mental health issues or other non-standard brains it might well be more than annoying. Fortunately I was able to turn off the sound and go with subtitles before I started screaming. 😁.
How long does the ink last?
Oh that is so nice. Very good idea and great work many greetings Christiane from Berlin Germany. I have subsribed your channel 😊😊
How ingenious. Something I’ll be trying. Do you have any sense of how long the ink lasts before it dries out? At that point, would you just recharge the tape or wipe the old ink off?
I shot the footage for this at least a year and a half go now. Pulled the typewriter out the other day for the first time in a while and it’s still going strong,
@@SpinesAndSplines Grand, thank you. I'll definitely be trying this!
Fantastic idea!!! Brilliant!!
What are u using for stamp pads..a list of items being used on the screen would be nice.
Hi, all the items I used are listed in the description.
What is lube
hello world, this may be too much ink. lol. thanks for your video
It turned out that it did settle down after I let it sit for a bit. :)
my first attempt was also a heart!
CAUTION! Do not eat coprinus, Saggy Mane with an alcohol. It blocks the bodies ability to process alcohol and turns in a poisonous chemical.
Thanks for the warning, but this video is not about eating mushrooms, it’s about making ink from them.
Tysm!
The question that still remains for me is if the charcoal particle size is actually small enough to separate out the acrylic polymer from the water. I'm not sure it actually does as the particle size is actually larger. Purified activated charcoal is 10,000 - 100,000nm and acrylic polymer when wet seems to be 50nm (hard to find the size for when it's wet versus when it is dry). So what is the charcoal doing? Is it binding to with the acrylic polyer and pigment particles? Thanks! I appreciate the video!
Hi,i won't tell anyone what they should or not do,but metal primers that give the best results are either etch type or 2k(2 pack),i've restored my triumph spitfire twice, once wrong(paint rust issues) and the second time with 2k primer and zinc primers,no rust issues. Aluminium is a tricky metal to paint and i think etch primer will give the best results. I'm looking for the best paint for stomp boxes other than automotive 2k types, out of the automotive paint i would lean towards the commercial paints they seem to be very hard wearing. Powder coat ,i am not a fan, alloy motorbike wheels end up flaking due to the powdery oxides produced when scratched,so powder coat is out as repairs are non existent as a full strip and recoat is needed. Again 2k paint is best for batch painting which suits me,but prototyping is always a one off affair and getting it right first time is either luck or due diligence expediting the info. I have pedals that have been painted and it never bothered me if they chip on corners but now i want to produce high end tube pedals....urgh. Another off shoot from classic cars is a paint used on old matel dash boards and scution plates and that is crinkle paint,it's black and with a tight small crinkle finish ,i've seen pedals done with this and it's a reasonably hard wearing finish, where the switch gear lights etc are finger constantly scratch and rub, just remembered it,not cheap, but a spray can would give tens of enclosures,a spray can of etch primer too. Small sample 1/4ltr of 2k paint can be bought cheap enough with the hardener too a need,a small air brush is also cheap,a compressor can be made from an old refridgeration compressor from a dump or ebay,no need for a tank with an air brush. There is always salt electrolysis,be aware to not use sodium chloride/table salt use potassium hydroxide as the electrolyte as table salt/sea salt/road salt/sodium chloride when used as an electrolyte will produce CHLORINE GAS, as used in the trenches of ww1. You could nickel plate unpainted areas, just as in etching a pcb either positive or negative image and keep or strip the paint, again something from the classic car thing . Just spitballing ideas ,i still have to sus out the cheapest most hard wearing paint, acid etch paint i think is the best way to go as a base layer.
I would've sprayed a fine mist of water and then pressed it to transfer the colours.
Thank you 😀
Interesting, thank you 😀
Thanks for a great instructional video. Keep up the great work.
Thank you very much ❤🙏
Спасибо!!!!!🥰🤩🥰
How many watercolor pages can you reasonably use like this, before it starts getting wonky? Thanks
I was so surprised to see that you started out at the most basic level! I have used several of the commercial brands of watercolor ground, it is quite expensive! I found Liz Chaderton and her recipe for watercolor ground is gesso and modeling paste. If you want the wood grain to show through for a unique look, use transparent gesso and modeling pastes it works so well I have stopped buying any commercial brands and I have saved loads of money making my own! Thank you for sharing your from scratch recipes.
Thanks for your comment! Having lived in a number of places internationally, I’ve found that not all art supplies are easily available in a lot of places, and I get frustrated with recipes that insist on using a certain product of brand that’s not always accessible, so I wanted to try and figure out how to make something like this from scratch. Glad you found it useful. :)
