You did well. Gladly, you know that area. Goodnight
Wind often makes single speed riding a terrible chore. One of my bikes is a road bike with a 9speed rear derailleur and a single chainwheel on the front. I used to ride a fixed gear track bike to work..... riding the single-speed is just too much of an arduous task most of the time. Will my 9-speed very easy to maintain and so much better than a single speed
I used drops with my track bikes for 40 years, racing and training. Then I installed bullhorns and TT brake levers. Far better for climbing leverage than drops.
The bullhorns have great leverage. I only like compact drop bars with the hooded brake levers. They aren’t comfortable brake less or with top mount levers.
Nice refreshing review. I dig it
Thank you!
Hello Tom. Thank you for the upload. The bicycle featured here sits slightly northwards of 10kgs?
9.3 kg with no accesses attached, rear fender removed. This is with 2 bottle cages, plastic pedals, and a super heavy brooks saddle. Getting lightweight bottle cages and a lighter saddle would probably get it closer to 19 lbs.
Curious, why is the seat post bent backwards?
This is a Thompson seat post that has a "setback". Basically, it puts the saddle further back. Helpful for me as it gives me a bit more room on the bike without having to go up one size.
@@tommilano5431 I thought maybe it was to increase setback, but I wasn’t aware of that style of seatpost. Thanks for the info!
I run 32/16 on my mountain bike. It's right for my area and level of fitness. I can switch it out to a 42/16 if i feel like punishing myself. Compared to a geared bike i find i feel more confident on a single speed when standing on the pedals. They're great fun.
That's a nice spinny gear! Single speeds are special, as you just pedal forward and go. When I'm on a geared bike, I am always trying to "hunt" for the right gear, but on a single speed I don't do that!
@@tommilano5431 That's so true, you just... Go. Happy riding ✌️
Why deal with clipping in and out when you can simply track stand? 😉
I've done this, but especially with the road shoes I've fallen, lol!
Good stuff. No drama.
Thank you, that's what I'm going for here!
Used to ride SS MTB. It was all about momentum. You need to add energy to the bike on the downhill and let it carry you back up. Also, you need to attack everything when climbing. Put energy into the bike on the run up. Once the energy is gone, however, it's the slow motion grind. I was always out of the saddle on the climbs. On moderate grades (6% or so, fire road) it was possible to find a sweet spot and relatively higher RPM. Maybe 60-75 ish. I ran 2:1, or just under. 32:16 or 32:18. My go to after work was a fire road where I climbed a couple thousand feet. When fit, I could match or beat my time on a geared bike.
Yes, momentum is key! And you just get stronger after a while.
Yam momentum for a couple hundred feet only
As a person cycling in a city with minimal bike lanes, cycling feels so unsafe. I might have to reconsider cycling until the infrastructure improves. Cycling on the road isn't worth the constant confrontations with road ragers.
It's tough cycling on the roads with cars. I find it's easier in a city as cars can't go as fast as the suburbs.
Why use specify gear ratios instead of gear inches? Gear inches is much more precise and direct.
You're not taking into account tire size.
@@bruceclark5627 I am, using standard formula: number of chainring teeth divided by number of cog teeth multiplied by diameter of wheel.
@@hernehill6282 WELL...... If we're gonna geek out over this, let's do it properly 😁,......you didn't measure the true size of the tire when Inflated to a specific PSI,at a specific altitude and then account for barometric pressures.
All good points. Reason I used ratios is that it's easier for people to understand, as it's simpler. I did mention this is assuming one is using 28mm or 32mm tires, and that if you run 23mm or 38mm tires it will affect your gearing.
My rear derailleur cable broke while riding in Big Bear CA. (TofCalifornia fame). I had the pleasure of riding a single gear back to my car.
That sucks. I've heard on mechanical systems the shifters fray the cables after a few thousand miles. Might be worth it to check and/or replace the inner cable every few months.
I have a vintage steel bike that is a single speed. It is geared in 52/18 which has a decent amount of top end speed and helps me get stronger. Not too heavy but not too easy either. It's great for the city like New York since it's mainly flat.
That's a steep ratio for me! I like to spin. But yes, NYC is mostly flat, and I imagine after riding SS for a bit it becomes easier and easier. I've seen Terry B go over the queensboro on a track bike with similar gearing to you and he stayed seated the entire time.
Let me save you the time watching this and give you the answer right away: You don't. You drive it on perfectly leveled roads
Must be nice to live in a place that's completely flat. Scratch that. It sounds boring. With no uphills, there's no coasting downhill.
Cmon. 48-17 is nice for 200km rides if no crazy head wind.
some folks who bike aren't in some internationally renown metropolis where movies are filmed. Some of us are in working class states where this concept hills that you can't avoid are a thing. It's why geared by bikes became popular.
All good points. For recovery rides or easy rides, it's easier to stick to flats. But some people live in hill country, so they don't have a choice but to deal with hills.
@@tommilano5431 yeah then buy some gears!!
Very thorough. Well done.
Thank you!
From what i understand, dont most companies just put a coating of formaldehyde on their shirts for it to be non-iron that then wears off after a few months?
I have heard that as well. The fabric that collars and co uses seems to be like a "workout" fabric that is breathable but also doesn't wrinkle at all. It's pretty crazy that these shirts don't need any ironing at all.
Good stuff. I ride single speed too but addicted to comfort. 44x19 on 38's in Adidas Busenitz. I would put the 38's back on the Thunder so you have something different and more comfortable for short trips and errands.
Thanks! I put 38s on the thunder for gravel, same gear ratio as you. It was nice for that. For the road, I like 28s, or maximum 32s. They roll much faster.
Plus, you have a small camera that helps in public. I noticed that with bigger cameras, some people wave or get in the frame just to be part of the video. It has happened to me in the past. Right now, I own a compact because my original camera broke the Sony ZV-1.
A small camera helps as it’s lighter and easier to pocket. It doesn’t help much with fear, it’s awkward at first no matter what. A cheaper camera can give piece of mind compared to walking around with an expensive setup.

I think a good option inside Clark’s is the bushacre 2 / 3. The Bushacre 2 got a n ortholite insole and it’s very comfortable
Sound advice!

I have thought about that! A 300% return on my “investment”!
I thought that I was the only one that thought in terms of “ if I lost everything then this shoe fill in the blank , would stay with me”
It’s good to think that way from time to time. Otherwise we end up with more material things than we know what to do with! Thanks for watching.
This was a great info for a beginner investor! Thanks for posting this.
Thanks John! Glad it was helpful, that was my intention!
I agree that Clark’s aren’t great at full price.

How about burgundy color shoes? I just bought a pair to break away from the norm. I’m older and men’s fashion looks generic and everyone is trying to look like one another. I understand ppl. want to look polished, but that’s not that hard to do and you end up looking like anyone that ships at H&M or Zara. Of course it’s the details that count, but back in my days, ppl. wore stuff to look different from everyone and not like everyone.
Oh and the word web used to use is too conservative.
I'm not into Burgundy. I like dark chili from Allen Edmonds, a medium brown with red undertone. Quality shoes and clothes will always set you apart, take a look at guys wearing tan shoes that are unpolished, and creased like crazy! Especially nowadays, with people wanting to dress in t shirts, sweatpants/joggers? and sneakers everywhere they go, it's never been easier to look unique!
This is AWESOME 👌 thx for sharing this. Flatiron building been there, but didn't stay.
Thanks Ronald, glad you enjoyed it!
Very nice! Excellent video.

Purchased a 2023 Domane SL5 during covid replacing a 2018 Domane. Upgraded the wheels to Bontrager Pro 51 and went crazy replacing the Ultegra mechanical with the new 105 Di2. So, best of both worlds. Great for group rides, sometimes averaging 30kph and supper comfy, fast and stable. Also have a souped up Edmonda with Ultegra mech 11, carbon wheels, and going back and forth is pretty natural. The Emonda is mostly on the trainer. Domane is NOT just for beginners. A lot of people ride Domane in my club and is probably one of the most popular bikes. With the upgrades, the Domane is one of my favorite bikes ever! Also have a souped up 2024 Checkpoint SL6.
Sounds like a great setup! I wish I went with a di2 version of the Domane, would’ve been one less hassle when t comes to maintenance. You’ve got a pretty sick quiver of bikes!
I sold mine a few months ago. Owned it for exactly 1 year. 6000miles done on it here in Ireland. Never had an issue. It wasnt off the rack..I had a few upgrades. A bike is only as Fast as the Rider...18 Strava KOMs, 100+ Top 10s and 700+PRs on Strava. Heavy comapred to my Merida but this bike hammered many lighter bikes and was great value for money.
Nice! It’s a great bike, and I really underestimated it when I first got it.
A great concise video. I used to be a 2023 TCR Advanced Pro 1 (your's little brother) owner who's now waiting to have 2025 TCR Advanced Pro 0 (your's direct descendant) delivered. From that perspective, I shared most of your likes and ‘likes but which can be dislike (and possible cost concerns)' points. As well, the vid has made me excited to really get the 'Pro 1 to Pro 0' upgrade incoming. Thanks and continue enjoying your rides!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! Overall, it’s a beast of a bike. With the new di2 being wireless up front, and the hidden cables, it fixes some of my concerns. Overall an awesome bike! Can even run 32mm tires for gravel.
Great video. How tall are you and what size is your bike? I love my Domane AL 2 but I think I’m ready for a faster bike. I’m 5’8” and ride a 54 cm and I’m feeling stretched out. Thinking of maybe trading, but might try a shorter stem first. I been riding 3 times a week, about 60 miles a week for the last 2 years. I can’t seem to be able to go more that 15 mph on the Domane (average speed), but I love it since it’s my first real road bike. Came from a Trek FX before the Domane. Any advice?
Try putting on a shorter stem. I wouldn’t want anything shorter than a 90mm stem. See how you feel then, and you can try pushing the seat forward. For speed, start lowering the bars and definitely upgrade your tires to something like the gp5000 and TPU inner tubes. This will make a huge different for not a lot of money. Up to you if you want to get new wheels, as I think the AL2 is rim brake and 8 speed, you might be better off saving that money for a disc brake set of wheels.
@@tommilano5431 thanks for the advice, the AL2 does come with disk brakes. Good call on the TPU inner tubes, I was thinking about going tubeless before realizing these exist. I don’t like to move the seat forward as it hurts my knees and where I have it now, is perfect just a bit far for my reach
I have this exact Domane in all black size 52. I am about 5’9”-5’10” and I feel great on it. I remember reading Trek forums that the size guides on the website are a little on the longer side. I could probably fit into a size 54, but for me the 52 is a great fit.
@@TheAortega18 OMG THIS! So validating, I kept telling the guy at the TREK store a 52 or maybe even 50cm but I was so inexperienced I trusted him and their video fit equipment. Moral of the story: if you are spending over $1k on a bike and you are inexperienced, get a proper bike fit from a pro. I should have gone for the 52 cm and not the 54
@@CiscoCheang unfortunately, bike shops will sometimes just try to sell what’s on the floor. The Domane does run big, mine is a 56 and it has the same reach as my size large TCR!
Manhatten flash backs
Yep.
Tom, with all respect I personally "hate" those ... they are like the "mules" of shoes😊
I get it, they aren’t for everyone. They are more like dressed up sneakers.
You seem to have considered everything. Is storage space an issue for you?
It’s not. Having 4 bikes just seems excessive, but as long as I’m using them it’s okay.
