In this video, I travel to Colorado to summit Mount Elbert, the tallest peak in Colorado, 2nd highest peak in the Lower 48, and tallest peak in the Rocky Mountains. I did this journey with my mountain bike.
There are several ways to get to the top. I chose to take the South Mount Elbert Trail near Twin Lakes. This is a bit of unique mountain in the sense that it is a bikeable trail. Most places like this are either too technical for a bike or are located inside the Wilderness Boundary. Although I had to push the bike for most of the climb, I was able to stay on the bike for almost the entire descent.
I am on a journey to climb all of the 50 US state high points. This was number 15 for me. If you enjoyed this video, consider subscribing so you can follow along as I make my way to the top of the tallest point in each of the 50 US states.

That was nice.
Thank you!
Is manual or automatic
They are automatic.
Sad that the line didn't make it. The track up to McCall have been pulled, The loop just above Cascade was removed, and a church was built on the right-away, I knew the chances for the train going any feather then Cascade was never going to be again, and the tracks to New Meadows are also gone. That would have been a ride from Nampa to New Meadows. The tracks to McCall were pulled a long time ago, and would have been a real bouts to that whole valley. I use to drive Hy-55 all the time, for work, and would see train cars full of lumber from Cascade, all the way down into the river. They would sit there for weeks, until they would finely be cleaned up. Hard to tell just why the rail cars had left the tracks, but it happened a lot. Then when Boise Cascade closed the mill in Cascade, all went quite on the line. So sad to see that the tracks are there, but no one wants to keep them clear of all the rocks and trees.. SAD!!
Thanks for the stories! Yes it is sad.
You've given me some real inspiration to go out and find these areas for myself. I make the trip up 55 several times a year but I've never just stopped and camped somewhere out there.
Glad this was inspiring for you!
The river is really pretty. Love seeing all the evergreens up your way.
It is gorgeous. I love it too.
Watching this again for research purposes.
@@lifeofluke welcome back dude 🤘
Thank you for this video. I am considering working for HAP this spring and summer. I’m wondering how many hours a day drivers drive. Eight, 10, or 12? How are the tips?
Cool! I’d say a typical day was anywhere between 6 and 12 hours. I’m sure HAP has a different operation than they did back then so that might be a good question for your hiring manager.
Was that one of the most dangerous lines to operate? I can't believe it wasn't better protected from rock slides. Interesting journey.
Not sure if it was dangerous, but I know the line would close from time to time due to rockfall.

Long time runner. Love running railroad tracks. Yes I know it is trespassing. But I never, ever run with headphones on. Always run with my ears always listening for cars, trains or emergency vehicles. Only very careful any more over the bridges with open base When I was younger it wasn’t a problem. Two ties at a time. Now that I’m 71 it is a little scary. Keep on trucking there Kent!
Thanks for the stories! Will do 🏃
That is way too sad...
😢
Where did you start? I would like to do this hike. Thanks
I started near banks
Thanks for posting this video! I was really hoping you'd make it all the way to Cascade....maybe that will be in a part 2 video? ;-) In June of 2016 I spent 10 days working in the Donnelly area, with a couple of those days resulting in me being trackside at some job sites south of Cascade. One particular site was next to the tracks along the river in a spot that looked very similar to what I saw in your video. Being a lifelong railfan, and it being my first time to Idaho (I'm a Michiganian), I was really fascinated by the current state of this railroad and the history of it. I did a little research at the time but never got very far with it. Seeing this video has sparked my interest again and I think I'll do a little more digging, including looking at some aerials from as far back as the 1950s (thanks to www.historicaerials.com/viewer). Even though you didn't make it to Cascade, I did appreciate your ending, as that was one of the railroad crossings I drove by when I was there. I think I may even have a photo or two of it somewhere. 🙂
Cool! Yeah I decided not to continue towards cascade, mostly because I didn’t want to run through private land.
Very nice video. I used to live in the Upper Peninsula and somewhere around where you were is the Huron Mountain Club which is a big off limits area where millionaires go and hang out. Henry Ford and Edison and Firestone were members many years ago. I drove to the entrance once and there was a guard shack where they will tell you to turn around and get lost lol.
That’s crazy 🤪
Did you need permission to do this or was none needed?
Growing up in Boise in the 50's-70's McCall was my favorite place. We went at least every other year. Was real familiar with the rails as a love of trains had me watching them every trip hoping for a train. The big bridge where you started your journey had 55 going under it before the realignment and improving of 55 so very familiar with it. 55 used to be like the section from the Rainbow Bridge up into long valley so quite a trip. Returned last year for a vacation and had to spend some days in McCall, amazed at how the rail route had deteriorated. Last train from McCall was in 1978 and the line from Cascade was torn up shortly after. McCall's mill burned in 76 and took 2 years to haul it all out. The mills at Cascade, Horseshoe Bend, and Emmett all closed in the 80's. The cars for the Thunder Mountain RR scenic train were still in Emmett last I checked. The line has major problems with many rock slides and some washouts from Black Canyon dam all the way to Cascade and would take a lot of money to get back into service. Kind of a shame to see it go.
Facts!
Loved the video, enjoyed your thoughts.
Thanks! I appreciate it.
Thank you, brother. :)

This would make a great biking trail if paved and restored.
I agree 🚴♂️
As I am past running but do enjoy walking track/trails like that. As you say it is very good to I bath in a creek or river, take the water out and pour it on me to wet myself and then rinse off the soap. Nothing like being clean . This year was hot so was very good in the lake, Enjoyable.
Love that! Thanks for the comment.
Well done
Thank you!
Interesting comments about wanting it back in service. If there was any reason for it, they would have. Doubt it will ever happen
Yeah unfortunately I think you’re right.

I WISH YOU'D SAID SOMETHING ABOUT WHERE THE RAILROAD GOES BEYOND WHERE YOU STOPPED RUNNING
@@davidgrenis638 it goes a little further to Cascade and then the tracks end. They used to go all the way to McCall but have been removed.

Beautiful video. FYI, the railway bridge over the river is a truss bridge, not a trestle bridge. 😊

Good for you! Thanks 🙏
The locomotives from this line now sit in the desert near Ocatillo in Southern California next to Interstate 8. Kind of sad, really.
Interesting. The INPR does still operate out of Emmett, and you can see diesel locomotives there from time to time.

Wow, what a story! Gonna watch it with my boys tomorrow.
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for the watch. 💪
Very nicely done! We live across the street from that RR, just below Horseshoe Bend. The small tunnel just above Black Canyon is partially collapsed but otherwise or stretch is pretty clear. I'm not a runner but have thought about how fun it would be to travel it on a small railcar.
That’s so cool. I’ve thought about doing that section but I always get a little nervous to go through people’s land. I never know how folks will react if they see me.
Where did you start and end, approximately. I'd like to hike it.
I went from Banks to Cabarton.
Did you see any rattlesnakes on that hike?
No I did not

@@ilikethingsandstuff I appreciate that!
I always wanted to rail cart the tracks from banks up however you can see that massive slide just a few miles north of banks from the hwy. I have rode the thunder mountain line from Horseshoe Bend north to Banks as well as west to Montour. I wish they would revive the railway. Too bad they pulled the tracks from Cascade to McCall. As a kid on your way north on hwy55 we would see the train running from time to time. At least once a year it would derail and dump a train car or two of lumber in the river.

I live in Tomahawk about 20 to 25 miles east of Timm's Hill. Been there a dozen times. Never thought anyone except official park personnel/rangers were meant to/allowed to climb that metal tower, but I could be wrong. It never even occurred to me to try and climb that one, the other wooden one next to it is plenty high enough for me. In late September and early October the view of all the tops of the trees below turning colors from up there is inspiring. You should check out Copper Falls State Park in Mellen, WI about an hour and a half north of Timm's Hill. They have a lookou tower there as well. Also, if you like disc golf, there's a great course in Red Wing, MN at the top of Memorial Park with a great scenic overlook of the whole town and the Mississippi river from up there.
Yeah I looked for any sort of sign for rules about the big tower and didn’t find one so I went for it! Thanks for the recommendations, those sound amazing! You have a beautiful state. 💯
Great video!!!
