I use Liquid wrench at my house and have decent luck with it. I must stress that the hype surrounding Kroil oil is totally bewildering to me. I have soaked totally rusted fasteners with it overnight and it did Nothing. We do have a new one at work that a couple guys at work swear by called Corrosion x. I have not used it yet.

    That restoring method is not proper in this case, or even harmful to antiques. You irreversibly make a great damage to original, proper bluing. Now it is just blacked, with mediocre durability and rust resist, comparing to bluing. In that case, only thing you need to do is just degrease boil that barrel in tap water for about 30 min and wipe surface with fine steel wool. Rust on steel surface will convert to black oxide when is exposed to moisture and heat...

    I have been shooting since the 70’s. I exclusively shoot a 17 Remington, 25gr bullet traveling 4100 fps. I clean my barrel every 100 rounds or so. I have ALWAYS used a bronze brush and I only stroke it in the barrel about 15 times just using Hoppes 9. I get 3500 round on average before the accuracy I need falls off, then I just rebarrel. You have went down the rabbit hole.

    my biggest complaint about cold blue, is you can rub it off with your thumb. I turned a barrel back and instead of hot blue, I used cold. I can remove it very easily with friction from a finger BUT it does hold oil and it does prevent rust. I just have to re-apply it after aggressive cleaning. I used cold blue in industry with the same result, it looks good going out of the shop but it had no wear resistance, but it will hold oil. Rustoleum or paraffin worked well.

    • @WildBushGrit
      @WildBushGrit 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Your finger?!?! I never had something like that, it will wear off with long term rubbing, but even my knives hold up pretty well. How are you degreasing your barrel? Cheers mate thanks for the comment, I'll look into hot bluing, i guess it would be very close to parkerization.

    • @camo576
      @camo576 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@WildBushGrit I used G96 which is available in Australia. The industrial blueing was from Caswell Plating. They both use selenium. It is microns thick. Hot blueing is much deeper. I use caustic wash followed by isopropanol to prep, and always warm the part. I have tried to do it twice but once it is done, the paste does no more. Parkerising is a deeper treatment, done that on machine tools and hand tools. I prefer to nickel plate if I can. Rust blueing I have not done at this point.

    You should acetone your steel wool too. It's got oil on it to keep it from rusting in the bag...Otherwise, great video! Also, have you looked up traditional rust bluing? If you have an older gun that you want to refinish, but also make the finish even across the whole gun, rust bluing can be done at home, with a relatively small investment and simple tools. It's not nearly as complicated as you would think it would be. I usually reblue a gun, or two, as winter projects, after hunting season is over. Cold bluing definitely is a great option for smaller pieces and quick fixes with good results though!

    • @WildBushGrit
      @WildBushGrit 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      you re refering to hot bluing by traditional? yeah i looked into it, and indeed some extra step and tool made me tried the cold blue first. So far I've had good result with it. But eventually, when I get a shop or a garage i'll certainly look at it more.

    • @m73m95
      @m73m95 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @WildBushGrit There are several different methods to bluing. Hot bluing I associate with a caustic solution that actually turns the steel blue (not parkerizing though. That's different all together). What I consider "traditional" bluing is controlled rusting with steam (and a rusting solution), then boiling the parts in plain water to turn the red rust into black "rust". Its actually very easy to get good results. Mark Novak has some great videos on it, if you're interested!

    • @WildBushGrit
      @WildBushGrit 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I just find the liquid to be slower at darkening and need more work overall. The paste is also instant, I even use it on my knives. Maybe a different brand would give better result, the ones from Brownell seems to work really fast.

    • @WildBushGrit
      @WildBushGrit 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It has a tendency to get salty, that's what will make it stable. I assume you did used kosher salt, and not fine salt, fine salt will give you very salty result. Like everything, its trial and error. You might wanna reduce the initial salting period. Also I never eat it alone, I'll add it to something else to balance the salt out. if you were to add it to a soup or or rice for example. Cheers!

      My everyday shoes are usually size 11.5 or 12 depending on brands. My winter mukluk are made by Acton and are size 12 Medium, they fit perfect with extra room for the heavy felt sole and extra pair of socks. They usually go for 100$ a pair. I suggest buy extra soles. So you can alternate their use during a trip if they get soggy.

      @@WildBushGrit I appreciate that bit of knowledge, I didn't even think about extra soles.

    I know my 700spsv shoots better witb a dirty barrel. I cleaned it and it took 5 shots to get it back.

      yeah its usually the case, in my experience you need a 2 to 5 rounds to get to peak accuracy.

    Thinking about adding a Boyd’s at-one to my older t3 lite 22-250 that I use for coyote hunting. Already have a Boyd’s prairie hunter on my browning Abolt 7mm wsm and love it

    I have one and am reloading (of course....have to). Any good reloading data you'd feel like sharing? I"m in Mtl too. I have a bit of 3031, 4895, 4064 info I'm using, just looking for more, probably older cookbook stuff. Thanks! Steve

      With IMR 3031, 286gr bullet, calls for 43 grains for a velocity of 2070, or 232gr bullet with 47grains with a velocity of 2330. I found these in a old manual shared on forums.

    The thing many people don't realize, is that the Lyman reloading book you show (and many other books too) has tapered wads being used in straight hulls in many of their recipes. I'm assuming since they probably go from loading to testing they don't care, and perhaps they don't shake them up either, therefore they don't show the difference when the powder moves past the wad. Makes me wonder why they do that, or in this case don't do that.

      Yeah I don't know either, I think they are trying to give more options to people but in real life, (maybe just me) but my shells get tossed around, driving offroad, hiking, and when it comes to hunting, I want the best possible solutions. You might have one shot only and performance matters a lot :)

    I just spend $6 on a bag of 1000 bingo chips (3/4" Diameter) and roll crimp them at whatever height the load needs, so every hull could be a different length, however, hulls loaded with identical loads and wads tend to be the exact same length and look really clean, and if the hull is not transparent, I can see what's inside them!
